Kyle Trask’s Trade Value

March 10th, 2024

Kyle Trask

So today the Patriots are finalizing a trade of their 25-year-old, scandal-free former Pro Bowl quarterback with 43 starts under his belt for a sixth-round draft pick.

No wonder Jason Licht’s phone wasn’t ringing for Kyle Trask.

Joe is referring to the Adam Schefter report that New England is shipping Mac Jones to the Jaguars and Jacksonville will kick them back a sixth-round pick.

That got Joe thinking about a quarterback snagged later than Jones in the 2021 draft: Bucs backup Kyle Trask, who this year will have his third offensive coordinator in three years.

What’s Trask’s market value if that’s what the Patriots could get for Jones? Trask is a little bigger and stronger than Jones, but he has nearly zero experience and seems less athletic. He’s also 26 years old.

Could Trask fetch as much or more than Jones in a trade? Or does he have no value?

Joe still remembers when Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen had his introductory news conference in January. The word “Trask” never came out of his mouth at the podium. That made Joe wonder about Trask’s future in Tampa, though he is very much appreciated by general manager Jason Licht.

Jones was one of five quarterbacks drafted in Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft. The group has combined to win one playoff game.

And that’s exactly why Joe is always leery of giving away a ransom to trade up for a quarterback.

Trask is not going anywhere and will be ready wnen asked.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    ZERO!

……he was kinda drafted High as a QB and never once started a game?????

    PATHETIC!!!!!

  3. Capt.Tim Says:

We cant cut or trade Trask! He gas become very valuable to the Bucs.

If we lose Mayfield, we go into rebuild Mode. We will need to tank as much as possible this year, to get a top 3 pick.
No one better for that job than Kyle Trask!
He’ll float those slow moving lil Zeppelins to the sidelines, and Defensive vacks will be taking them to the endzone like a sideline track meet!

And even with the team losing every game, the Trask worshipping bro lovers will still put a few butts in the seats.

Guess that makes Kyle a double threat!

  4. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’d rather the Bucs just keep Trask if he’d only fetch a 7th Rounder.

  5. David Plotnek Says:

Is it possible to have negative value?
Bucs gave The Giants a fourth rounder and Kyle Trask in return they got an eight round pick

  6. Popcorn Mike Says:

Joe that’s my exact reason I think Mayfield signs in the next 2 days. From what I am seeing, teams or starting to sour on giving these QBs these big contracts. Too many bust and then your team is in salary cap hell. I see some fans starting to panic since NE just traded Jones. Mayfield can go there and be the man. However, NE is in rebuild mode and I think they will look to the draft for QB Tampa has a good defense and a couple of top receivers and look to be a sure playoffs contender. Nonetheless, a lot of times it’s about the money

  7. DRFEELGOOD Says:

I see no reason to trade Trask. I hope we keep Baker, and I hope he doesn’t get hurt. But if he does I would much rather have Trask come in. He has familiarity with the offense and the players. I know it’s a sample size of one, but when Baker went out against the Colts Trask threw a dart in the back corner of the end zone that only our man could catch. Barely out of bounds but still a dart. I think Godwin was on the receiving end.

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Less athletic than Jones? Unlikely.

  9. gotbbucs Says:

This is meant to be a joke, right?

He’s thrown 9 passes in the NFL.

If you believe in magic I guess maybe Tom Brady could have touched his hand once and somehow transfered something into him.

I have nothing against Trask, but this is a pointless discussion.

  10. Henry Says:

Personally, I enjoyed last season as there were no expectations “such as when Brady was here” for the Bucs to win with Baker. I am against giving him or any other QB a large contract that cripples the team. Build a strong team across the board, especially the trenches, and go with a veteran game manager or cheap rookie QB.

  11. Dom Says:

Joebakerfan trying to get Trask off the team lol. In all seriousness though who is going to trade for an unknown commodity with 1 year left in their rookie deal? Completely agree with gotbbucs

  12. Knothead71 Says:

The craziest thing to me is “he’s only thrown 9 passes”, “he’s never thrown a pass”, “he’s never started in the NFL”. You goofballs can’t get your minds around the fact that , at some point Tom Brady had “never thrown a blah blah blah”. There was a time when Mahomes didn’t have a start.
Everybody starts at the same place in the NFL.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

Why in the world would the Bucs want to trade Kyle Trask?

So they can have zero QBs under contract?

Yea – that would be a great idea Joe…

    LOL!

  14. Bucben61 Says:

K2 says The Bucs have no quarterback under contract other than Trask. Teams know the Bucs cannot even think about trading Trask unless and until another quarterback signs

You can’t make this sh*t up

  15. Beeej Says:

He has no trade value because his actual VALUE can’t be assessed. I doubt getting a bunch of reps in the 3 preseason games will change that. I figured for sure Baker would miss a game or 2 last year with a concussion or something, never happened. (Baker SHOULD have sat out that last Carolina game, his ribs clearly hurt him too much to play)

  16. mark2001 Says:

I’m really surprised to see all the love for Trask as a starter here next year. Nothing wrong with being hopeful. But I suggest the same folks that are UF fans that see Trask is a future franchise QB, were the first to ridicule the FSU fans that thought Jameis would be the same. And frankly, thinking Trask would be so, is even more delusional than those thinking Jameis would have been.

  17. HC Grover Says:

Here we go. I knew it. Whomever gets Trask will win the Super Bowl with him at QB. It happens every time….It is a Buc guarantee. History will repeat.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

It’s crazy how Trask never got a real shot and when he did he was better than the guy who you guys think is elite. He was better than Baker in training camp but you guys hate to give him his credit. If you take the names off the jersey Kyle Trask would have been the starter. Not to mention how all you Baker lovers forget the 6 game losing streak with our top 10 defense. Baker Mayfield will not win a superbowl for us . He’s a average quarterback and he can’t put the offense on his back just like the Lions game he threw a pick on the final drive and Joe refused to bring it up . Next year will be the same as last year or worse. It’s a shame how as a bucs fan we have to hope and pray that the division is trash again just to make the playoffs because we have a one read quarterback. When the bucs bring Baker back it’s NFC championship or bust no more excuses. Jamies never got the excuses that Baker and Jamies also won 9 games before. But the division was waay better than what Baker played in. NFC championship or bust no excuses!!

  19. Bucben61 Says:

As a long time nfl fan I am astonished there is so many delusional fans on this site..you are delusional if you think a 3 year backup qb with 9 career attempts is our ticket to the superbowl…sorry…reading comments…some of you need serious help

  20. Jerry Says:

I can tell you living in Minnesota the Vikings tried this past season when captain check down went on IR. Vikings run the same offense and felt like they could compete.

  21. T. McGee Says:

Not sure I agree with the comparison, Joe. While Mac has shown himself to be barely NFL caliber, Trask is an unknown. A rival GM could still look at him and see upside because he was really last seen in the SEC. He’s an old draft pick.

  22. mark2001 Says:

For those thinking Trask looked better in training camp, I’d suggest you think some more. Who really saw that? Or did some say that to motivate Baker?
Maybe they were also trying to encourage Trask, should Baker faulter in the regular season? But look at Trasks background. When did he ever win a QB competition against a good QB? Not saying he is a bum. But he has proven nothing against anything but college talent. Or look at what happens in the league with guys like Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes. When you really show flashes of franchise QB talent, you get your shot. The fact he hasn’t shown enough of that here should make some think twice about his ability to carry this team.

  23. Beeej Says:

Purdy and Mahomes both got their shots when the respective starters went down. That never happened last year for Trask (obviously wouldn’t have happened the two prior). That aside, there’s lots more to being a successful NFL QB than looking good in 7 on 7 drills. Trask will have to silently hope that Baker gets hurt…mebbe he could get a Baker Voodoo doll and stick pins in the right places….

  24. BakerFan Says:

Very bad pick for 1sr round to just become a door# 2 option. If they got an edge rusher instead that might of been in Super Bowl last year

  25. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Joe said:”Joe still remembers when Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen had his introductory news conference in January. The word “Trask” never came out of his mouth at the podium.”

    Uh, pretty certain that’s incorrect.

Didn’t Coen mention Kyle’s name when referring to play he came in for Bake and Godwin didn’t catch it in the end zone?

Joe, only saw 1 of Coen’s pressers, here’s the quote:

“I actually watched Kyle Trask a good amount coming out during that COVID year in 2021 and I watched him throw an unbelievable seed against the Colts in the back of the right of the end zone to Godwin, which wound up being incomplete,” Coen said. “But I think he’s got some accuracy and some ability.”

Played on several teams and there’s always guys that practice well and when the real bullets fly in a live game – nothing.

And vice versa, some guys play better in games than in practice.

Is there much recent film for coaches to look at of Trask? Not really. He will probably remain here. He does need to be used more. Right now Baker is our QB until he says he isn’t. Thinking positive about that.

  30. Allbuccedup Says:

Trade Trask to Washington for Sam Howell Brian Johnson is the assistant head coach and a former Trask coach. I am sure they are going to pick a QB at number 2. Send them Trask and one of our 6th rounders and a conditional 2025 pick. At least you have a backup plan.

  31. gotbbucs Says:

    @knothead71

This discussion has nothing to do with whether or not anybody thinks Trask can play or not. #1, why would the Bucs trade a cheap backup? #2, why would a team trade any draft pick for a complete unknown when they can just use that pick on a different complete unknown and have them under contract for four years?

  32. Red86 Says:

Let me get this right. A guy that was believed to be ahead of Baker at one point during preseason by Jason Licht. Is somehow considering trading him now? What does that say about Baker? 🫣

You know what is even more stupid?
Saying we need to draft a QB if we don’t sign Baker when we alright spent a good draft pick on one and hasn’t started yet.
    1. He was behind the goat
    2. Bowles was 1 game from being fired multiple times last year and was going to go sink or swim with Baker
    3. For the whole if he was good enough he would be starting, that’s his whole thing going back to high school was that he wasn’t good enough to start until he actually got out on the field

  37. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs could probably get a 6th. Jones started and showed he’s completely worthless as a starter, Trask is still a lottery card.

Of course at this point it would make no sense to trade him since the Bucs still have no idea what they got – and he’s improved pretty dramatically in preseason play since his rookie year, so at this point you just ride it out.

As for Trask, at his size, and with a good enough arm, he’ll stick around the NFL for quite a while, starter or not.

You know what is even more stupid?
Saying we need to draft a QB if we don’t sign Baker when we alright spent a good draft pick on one and hasn’t started yet.

Not even remotely stupid. The premise that he has not got the opportunity to show he should start or have been QB2 instead of QB3 is all based on your no evidence consiracy theory.

The idea behind drafting another Qb would be the assumption he would be able to show his coaches ( as Purdy did) in practice that he has earned the privelege to start. We wouln’t be going for another QB like Trask where his fans insist he must start in order to show he has earned the right to start.

  39. ModHairKen Says:

Trask has zero trade value. None. He’s never started. Never played meaningful minutes. No one even knows who he is.

    Just stop already.

  40. D Cone Says:

I’d bet there were a lot of names not mentioned in Coen’s Intoduction.

2021 QB draft now has 4 of 5 that are no longer going to be in a starting role.
Trask was 6 and has yet to start a game. So what? Two seasons were behind a QB that had 21 seasons and missed one start due to injury. 3rd he barely lost the starts to a Vet who had to drop his pants and whatever else to get the position.

58 QB’s started in 2023 so it’s just a numbers game as far as when Trask will be called on to come in. Mayfield had moments when he maybe shouldn’t have played and did. Maybe it was too financial or maybe it was fear of Trask lighting it up.

Regardless if 2 QB’s drafted in the first 2 rounds of 2021 are going to have success as a starter in the league Trask is still in the running.

Arguing for him to not be any good isn’t going to sway anyone to throw a boat load of cash at Mayfield

  41. FrontFour Says:

Trask stays with the Bucs or he’s out of the NFL. No idea if the guy can play. But the hour glass for a guy that’s never played in the regular season is just about out of sand. He was always going to be buried on the depth chart with Brady here. Disservice to even have drafted him.

  42. Joe in Michigan Says:

FrontFour: Yes, Trask was greatly mistreated by the Bucs for giving him a million dollars a year to hold a clipboard. 🙄

As you were using it before my post so I suppose you you it for anyone that thinks Trask just might be a decent QB.

I would seem to think that you are the one that is delusional thinking that Mayfield is going to be the Super Bowl answer.

  46. Ko Kiefer Says:

If you think Trask has 0 value you must no understand the value of backup quarterbacks. That affordable contract has value

  47. Bucben61 Says:

Dcone you are so hell bent on trashing Mayfield you sound like a delusional loser…. hahahahahaha

  48. go dawgs Says:

I’d guess you could get a subway club sandwhich, bag of chips, and a pack of now n laters for the backup??

  49. Tucker Says:

If Mayfield doesnt sign with the bucs Trask still probably still will not start as the bucs most certainly will sign a vet that will more than likely win the job. If Trask showed the coaches anything he would have been the starter. There is no conspiracy coaches want to win if they thought they could win with Trask they would have tried that.

  50. Tony Marks Says:

The penalty for all this hate is to move the team to Tallahasee with games at Raymond James 3 times per season subject to better behavior from haters.

  52. Junior's Farm Says:

Tucker Says: :”If Trask showed the coaches anything he would have been the starter.”

Nope. Bowles needed to at least win a playoff game to save his career and he was not going to hand the team over to an unknown “rookie”.

  53. SlyPirate Says:

    THE REAL LESSON …

TB12, Baker, Brad Johnson, Jeff Garcia … Our best QBs are all FAs. Not surprising either. Of the last 30 Super Bowl winners, only 5 QBs were drafted by the team.

    Lesson: Don’t draft QBs

  63. Buchen61 Says:

A few tweaks here and there and the sky’s the limit ..go bucs!!!!!!

  64. David Says:

For 1.4 million, I think he’ll stick around on this last year of his contract as a back up. Unless the new OC has a veteran back up in mind. At best they’re going to get a 7th rounder so cheaper to keep him as a back up.

  65. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Trey Lance fetched a 4th-round pick after demonstrating that he will be a project at QB. I find it hard to believe that Trask couldn’t fetch at least that.

Personally, I don’t believe that the Bucs will trade him. I see him signing a 2nd multi-year contract as the eventual heir-apparent.

  66. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Did u ever consider some of Trask practice in the beginning of the season with baker might just have been he was already in Tampa for 2 seasons as backup so he had plenty of practice with the existing seasoned team mates once baker got a bit more comfortable things started to change in baker favor once the preseason started game over for Trask now that is pure logic in my book

  67. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Dcone head says if baker is not the answer to another SB he sure had us in the rite direction with his 1st year here no joke! joker

  70. BucaneroJim Says:

Trask is not going anywhere. With Baker coming back on board, the Bucs need a backup QB who knows the system.

Of course, the Baker bois believe Trask should be traded and R. Wilson brought in as the “elite” Backer’s backup.

  71. Larrd Says:

Trask will get a start or two at some point. I can’t wait to see him perform well. He is big. He throws fairly well. He seems very diligent. He seems to have strong character, judging from his attitude through what must be a frustrating start to his pro career.

  72. sunbunny Says:

    @bucanerojim

“Of course, the Baker bois believe Trask should be traded and R. Wilson brought in as the “elite” Backer’s backup.”

literally no one with more than two brain cells wants r. wilson even as a backup qb. which is why the only people who have been clamoring for him are trask fanbois/baker haters. the guy is a locker room cancer. when your team would rather eat $85m in dead cap space just to get rid of you than have you in their locker room, that says a lot.

  73. Marky Mark Says:

Oniel buc.. Since apparently you are claravoyent and know for sure Baker will not win a super bowl we might as well all take advantage of your gift. 1. Who will win, place and show in the Kentucky Derby? 2. President 2024? 3. Wil! Taylor marry Travis?

  74. Tb bolts Says:

MAYBE now that bakey and bowles aren’t gambling their careers… they’ll get Trask some regular season reps when baker is banged up. For example a 6 game losing streak? Baker got his contract and will hopefully take a game or two off instead of choosing himself over the team like we saw most of last year.

  75. Jerseybuc Says:

Need a legit backup QB who can start a game
Or two due to injury. Coaches have told you all you need to know about Trask. Get a vet. Andy Dalton type.
