Kick-Back

March 11th, 2024
New Bucs kicker Chase McLaughlin.

He’s back!

The Bucs brought back their kicker.

Per Jenna Laine of ESPN, the Bucs have re-signed kicker Chase McLaughlin. He was dynamite in his first and only Bucs season, long-range hitting on 7 of 8 field goal attempts over 50 yards.

Overall, McLaughlin connected on 93.5 percent of his kicks, the best single-season rate in franchise history. It’s a three-year deal, per Laine.

That’s four of the five big-named Bucs free agents re-signed before legal tampering begins at noon today.

Lavonte David, you are on the clock!

  3. Rover Says:

    Rumble young man Licht, RUMBLE!!!

  4. Thatguy Says:

Glazers need to sign Licht to a Bucs lifetime deal. This man is dealing!

  5. zzbuc Says:

Great news!!!! LVD here we go…..Keep coming

  6. JD Still Says:

It’s good to have our leading scorer back!

  7. Joseph C Simmons Says:

    YES YES YES!

For the first time since Autommatica was here, I didn’t have a lump in my throat every time we brought out the field goal unit.

  8. Buc4evr Says:

McLaughlin is probably the most valuable player on the team. LOL. Good signing.

  9. Marine Buc Says:

    Cool.

New contracts for Wirfs and Winfield are next.

Then LVD gets signed hopefully soon as well.

  10. Boss Says:

yes!! guy is great and were gonna need him!!

  11. CTBucs Says:

We need to clear up some cap space. A restructure for Vita would go a long way, as well as adding a year to Godwins deal (look at what Seattle just did to Lockett). Need to make a decision on CDIII/Dean. Obviously LVD and McLoughlin are priorities to resign. After all that, bargain shopping for IOL, Safety and edge make the most sense. We should have enough cash to sign one of each and build depth before the draft

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

    Another Licht success

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Now this is great news! 3 year deal!

  14. unbelievable Says:

    Licht is nailing it.

Now we need to bring back David, find an edge rusher, and draft an o-lineman and another inside linebacker.

  15. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Nice! This dude is a stud.

  16. Tony Marks Says:

Normally don’t worry that much about a kicker but this dude was outstanding last year. OF course not an MVP but as close as I have seen a kicker in quite some time.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Licht is doing his outright best in keeping the Band together. So I gotta salute him..SALUTE!! Now go get Chop Chop Robinson in the 1st round and get us a pass rush.

  18. Cho Says:

Jason Licht has become a top 10 NFL GM. I love the fact that, after years of negligence from Bucs front offices, we are finally building through the draft, stocking the trenches and keeping our own guys. Remember when Dominick let Michael Bennett Walk?

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

Chase was great over 50, but he also never missed a PAT unlike Justin Tucker. Kicking outdoors on grass can be challenging but Chase did great.

On to LVD, Wirfs, and Winfield!

  20. deuceswild78 Says:

nailing it … now dump one of those CB salaries to free up for winfield and/or wirfs… hopefully enough in the hopper for a back up RB and edge rusher

  21. Lt. Dan Says:

Huge signing. Highest scorer on the team.

  22. Toad Bowels Says:

With apologies to Martin Gramatica, Chase McLaughlin is well on his way to becoming the best kicker in Bucs history!

Congratulations Chase! You bring an important and well-needed dimension to this offense.

  23. Ted Says:

This is the most important player on a Bowles coached team, well done Team Glazer!!! When you play for three instead if seven consistently, your kicker has to be elite and Chase is well worth the money.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They’re not going to do Wirfs…because he is still under contract. Teams do not usually do early deals if they can avoid it.

At most, they might try to rework it to save money this year, but he’s already go several years of kicking the can.

  25. StickinUp4Centers Says:

“For the first time since Autommatica was here, I didn’t have a lump in my throat every time we brought out the field goal unit.”

Ryan Succup produced no lumps as long as you knew his limitations.

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

    Wow! Another critical signing.
We gotra put Jason in the Ring of Honor!
( I would have felt differently, if we had lost Mayfield)

  27. Beeej Says:

This dude is incredible –4th down and 7 on the 40? NO PROBLEM! Bring in the field goal unit!

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I see Lavante David, William Gholston, and maybe Devin White being next.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Devin White, as of noon, will learn he is worth half what he thinks he is worth.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Capt.Tim Says:
“We gotra put Jason in the Ring of Honor!
( I would have felt differently, if we had lost Mayfield)”

If he had lost Mayfield…I would assume he had a better plan in mind…like maybe a draft pick or something.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This team struggles to find Kickers, Centers and Quarterbacks. To have 2 of the 3 now addressed is great.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Per Spotrac, looks like McLaughlin’s contract is for $12.3 mil for the 3 years. At $4.1 mil per year that’s a steal IMO.

  33. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Just curious to see what a Devin White contract from the Bucs would look like if they were even entertaining the thought of bringing him back.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

Nice. I hope this kid continues to be one of the top kickers in the league. Sorry Joe, I’m with Defense Rules, HOPE is actually a great thing. 👍🏿

  35. Dom Says:

Looking like Licht is going to be able to throw that best parade after signing our core 5 guys to great deals. Bring LVD home, Jason!

Jason Licht, one of the best things to ever happen to this franchise

  36. Dom Says:

    Boat parade*

  37. Joe in Michigan Says:

Bonzai: If you take into consideration the Bucs “found” Tom Brady, Ryan Jensen, and Succop in free agency, I think they’ve done alright.

  38. Dom Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai

“Devin White, as of noon, will learn he is worth half what he thinks he is worth.”

Not even half lol. Dude came into the league saying he wants a 100M contract. He will be lucky to get 1 year for 6 million. This humble pie has been waiting for him for a long time

    What on Earth…?

First off, there’s absolutely zero you can “rework” on the last year of a rookie contract. ZERO. You can change salary to bonus if you like, but it still makes for the exact same cap number. The only way to lower his cap number is to pay him less. TRUST ME, that is not happening.

Secondly, The Bucs, like a lot of teams, don’t like to redo SECOND contracts before they’re completed. All teams have the ability to finally rework rookie contracts after the third year. It’s the first year they can do so. Or they can do it after the fourth year. Or they can do it after the fifth-year option if they’re a first round pick.

And many teams prefer to get it done as soon as possible because the sooner you do it, the cheaper it is. Salaries are skyrocketing, so the longer they wait, the higher the contract will be. And the closer Wirfs will get to free agency, where he might just say, “eh, I’ll wait and test the market”.

Wirfs is an outstanding player and individual. If the Bucs know what they’re doing, they’ll sign him this offseason, after his third year, and make him a Buc for Life. This is what they did for Vita Vea.

  40. Stanglassman Says:

The Bucs got a great deal. We lost a great kicker in the 90s to the Bills for a similar contract. He could’ve felted 6m a year in FA. This was a hometown discount.

  41. Conner50 Says:

Need to ink a two year deal with Lavonte David now

  42. TexasBuc 1776 Says:

Love it. Ryan Succop was great inside 50; this Irish boy, McLaughlin (St Pat’s Day on the horizon), is money from anywhere. Keep the good news coming LVD.

  43. brooks Says:

    Best signing yet!

  44. Saskbucs Says:

Man, next offseason we all need to kick back and relax. There’s no doubting Licht and his team. Add a winning culture to a warm climate and no state tax is making Lichts job easier forsure but he has been delivering for like 5 straight years now.

Has to be one of the most successful seasons a buc kicker ever had

Has to be one of the most successful seasons a buc kicker ever had

    ———-

The Bucs have had all sorts of amazing kickers over the year….

John Carney (5th all time in points scored)
Steve Christie (26th all time in FGs)

And of course, team MVP, future HOFer,

The kingpin himself, The Nigerian Nightmare Donald Igwebuike.

  47. Pickgrin Says:

Munch – Perkins called him “Donald Kicker” because he didn’t want to have to be bothered with trying to pronounce Iggy’s last name….

  48. Rod Munch Says:

Pickgrin – One of my all time favorite Bucs moments!

  49. Frank Pillow Says:

The most under appreciated signing in all the land. Crown this man for what he did for us last year. Absolute weapon.
