Joel Glazer Defines Franchise Quarterback

March 26th, 2024

Team Glazer member Joel Glazer.

So is Baker Mayfield “The Guy?”

Joe sort of asked Buccaneers co-owner Joel Glazer that today at the NFL Owners Meetings in Orlando.

Here’s the billionaire-to-blogger exchange. (Disclaimer: Joe has no access to data of Glazer’s holdings, net worth or what he has under his mattresses.)

JoeBucsFan.com: Joel, how do you define a franchise quarterback and is Baker Mayfield a franchise quarterback?

Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer: You know, I always hear the [phrase] ‘franchise quarterback.’ And I think a lot of people define it different ways. At the end of the day it’s about winning and quarterback, obviously, is a key component of winning, but someone you can count on, reliable, consistent, can lead your team. That’s what important.

It sure sounds like the Bucs consider Mayfield a franchise quarterback. And Joe will add that the Bucs have made Mayfield a major focus of their almost ridiculous “LFB” 2024 marketing campaign.

Glazer added that “not a lot of people could do it” when earlier referencing how Mayfield replaced Tom Brady and all that comes with that.

“It was a great transition,” Glazer said. “Hard to do. But [Mayfield] successfully did it last year.”

I guess Mayfield will be a “franchise” quarterback until he isn’t. Simple as that.

  2. Hodad Says:

Obviously the Glazers are happy with Baker, until they aren’t. Thats how it goes with any player. They paid him didn’t they? All you need to know. A better question Joe would’ve been, if a highly rated QB that the team likes falls to #26 do the Bucs still draft him even tho they signed Baker for three years?

  3. pmarcello Says:

Baker is going be and end as the best QB this team has ever had and that includes “Marcia”. this year Baker will lead the Bucs to the NFC title game and if he wins it his first Super Bowl. If Baker makes it that far he will win it. You heard it first here.

  4. Boss Says:

One season makes a franchise qb now……..

    I need that job.

    Put me in coach!

  5. Bucben61 Says:

Was just reading the jets can’t trade Zack Wilson for a cheeseburger….he was the #2 pick in the 2021 draft….#2!!!!

Just because you draft a QB in the 1st round….maybe even in the top 5. That doesn’t mean they will be good

I’m happy where we are as a team…fill some super important needs and this team is going to be fun to watch for years to come

  6. BucsFan Says:

Glazers need to look at themselves introspectively as the NFLPA Survey gave ownership a D- grade and Treatment of Families was a F grade. That is just pathetic and should garner immediate attention from the Glazers.

  7. AL121976 Says:

I didn’t originally like the signing of Mayfield but if Mike Evans approves, I do too.

  8. JD Still Says:

So, a “franchise quarterback “ is a winning quarterback, ( a sub.500 career wins quarterback is a “ winner”?) reliable, ( throwing an interception , second of the day , in a playoff game , with less than two minutes to play , I guess can be called ,”reliable”, but not in a good way, consistent, ha!ha! ha! ha!, that’s funny! but I guess , again , inconsistency can be called ,” consistent “, but not in a good way, can lead your team, yes , but where to?, and “major focus of the 2024 marketing campaign” , propaganda does not make for good marketing, it is a real roll of the dice , especially if it backfires, but , it can make you a success or a laughing stock, for a long, long, time.

  9. BucsFan81 Says:

We will tolerate you until we can replace you. Still don’t think Baker is the long term solution but a decent option for now with who was available.

  10. GP Says:

People pooh pooh the “game manager” QB. And yet, that is exactly what is needed for consistency.
It’s much better when that ‘game manager’ also has the talent to enhance the TEAM effort for consistent wins.
But one man does NOT make a team.

  11. D-Rok Says:

Just need to work on the “consistent” part of his game, and then yeah, Mayfield will become the Bucs franchise QB, according to Glazer. Wonder if this means we’ll be drafting a QB? *SHRUGS SHOULDERS*

  12. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker has all the tools and is a proven winner when the rest of the team and coaches are doing their job as well. We’ve seen much lesser QBs win Super Bowls and better QBs not win Super Bowls. It’s a team game. (Ask Marino and Barry Sanders if you don’t believe me.)

  13. Gipper Says:

At $35Mill per year, Baker isn’t going anywhere and all the skeptics need to get on board. Mike Evans, Jason Licht, Tristan Wirfs aren’t skeptics. Licht need to do provide what all successful QB’s need—a decent O line, an average running game, and an OC with imagination. A solid tight end would also be a major plus. Mayfield notwithstanding what the pretenders say on this blog, has an elite arm and incredibly strong leadership skills. If he didn’t, the Glazer’s wouldn’t have come up with the cash to keep him.

  14. Buc4evr Says:

If they have his pic on the side of the stadium he is the franchise QB… simple. lol.

  15. Trask To The Future Says:

Somehow I don’t think a “Franchise QB” often struggles to throw for 100 yards in the first half of games like Mayfield.

  16. Bojim Says:

He was a franchise QB soon as he re-signed. I believe he is one.

  17. Bucs Guy Says:

Even if Baker doesn’t win a SB with the Bucs over the next 3 years, I will be very happy with 10+ wins and playoff appearances every year. The Bucs need to continue to surround him with weapons, good line, a solid running game and strong D.

    ………………….

Brady had same issues with us, was the subject of many discussions. At any rate, Mayfield SOMEhow got to 4k, and was clearly improved in the second half of the season

  19. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Probably his best trait is he misses very few games. Talent doesn’t mean squat if it’s on IR

  20. Bucben61 Says:

I can see a path where this team wins another Superbowl with Baker leading the way…born leader with a big arm.

I guess it is gonna suck to be a Baker hater around here with all the winning that’s going to be going on…lol

  21. DBS Says:

It’s fun coming here everyday just to see the same cry babies crying. Especially the one that said he was done and not coming back If everything that was going to happen in free agency happened.

  22. BakerBucs says Says:

Jd still says u r STILL stupid with stupid commentary grow up little boy if I want to hear nasty garbage I will watch MSNBC which u b a big fan of that bs

  23. BakerBucs says Says:

glad the glazers r smarter than many morons on this site

  24. Larrd Says:

Is Baker Mayor of Tampa material is the more pertinent question. Maybe Joe can have a sit down with Pam Iorio!

  25. JD Still Says:

Baker Bucs: I think you need to look at your post again, I did not call anyone stupid, You wrote that as if it was me calling Baker supporters stupid , which I did not do , probably just a simple Freudian slip on your part.

  26. Esteban85 Says:

I’d like to know what other quarterbacks we could’ve signed? Any out there better than Baker? If so who? Cousins? I don’t think so scooter.
Were we to just hope for a qb in the draft at #26? Are we supposed to let Baker go win with someone else after we made it to the divisional playoffs with him and a bunch of rookies? Seems silly to let Baker go anywhere else after the 2023 season we had. We played the cards we were dealt and we will see the flop in 24’

  27. Shane Callahan Says:

I’m just wondering what Baker could do with the same coaching staff more than one year for once in his career. (Besides the one season he fought for his team with a torn shoulder from week 2 on which he got rewarded for his grit by being tossed by the team he turned around.) Some folks need to actually do research before they bag on someone.

  28. Shane Callahan Says:

I wonder how many times Stefanski wanted to punch his owner last year for getting rid of Baker. 🤣🤣🤣

  29. Randal Parmer Says:

JD. I truly believe all u baker bashers are absolutely clueless about football. U tell me which QB in the NFL wins in what Baker inherited. I believe the browns were 1 and 31 the previous two years. I believe he was on his 4th HC / OC by his 3rd year. I believe his first 4 years the Defense was top 25 AT BEST. There are Pro’s and Con’s to ALL QB’s Baker is no different. If you do not WIN more than ypu LOSE with Baker at QB1 you need to look elsewhere for the answers. He is a leader, has an ELITE arm, and plays HURT. easily a top 12 QB in the league. Even with all the absolute BS the browns did to him he gave it his all. More than I can say for 80% of the NFL QB’s have had to put with and more than any human being should have to. GOOD LUCK BUCS!

  30. Randal Parmer Says:

    Shane Callahan,
NEVER!!! The browns entire front office leaders including the coach are IVY LEAGUE MORONS. STEFANSKI is the most useless 2 time hcoty I have ever even imagined. Good luck BUCS!

  31. Capt. Tim Says:

Tampa has gotten the QB they want.
We have strong armed, Tough, winning QB.
We have the QB. We Have the WRs.
Alright Jason Licht- lets get the man the O line and defense he needs,
And Go get our 3rd ring.
Its a real tribute to our ownership and Management. They really are playing to win championships for Tampa. Its not just a money grab, like so many sports owners.

  32. Capt. Tim Says:

Baker Mayfield’s career reads like a movie script.
I think we know how its gonna end!

  33. Bucben61 Says:

Yes… Cleveland showed Baker no love…that definitely includes Stefanski…I have absolutely no respect for the organization or the man

  34. heyjude Says:

Agree, we have the right QB Baker Mayfield. He was the perfect one for the transition from the goat Tom Brady. It is hard to be the QB coming in after a legend like Brady and he did well. Next season will be even better.

  35. HC Grover Says:

The Bucs are a franchise. Their QB is always a ‘Franchise QB”

  36. Popcorn Mike Says:

I hope we can get 8 quality years out of Mayfield, he’s 29 so 8 years put him at 36 which is basically the age most QBs may start to decline however, there’s still quite a few more that have went a bit longer. I hope this is the case for Bucs fans and the Bucs with Mayfield

  37. SlyPirate Says:

Are you f’ing kidding me? These clowns were gifted an NFL franchise. OMFG!

Sell the the team! Rich kid, nepotistic, weirdos. I never want to see their browser history.

    Joe: “Define a franchise quarterback?”

Glazer: “Umm … QBs should win … games … football games. It’s the brown ball not the white and black ball. Right?

Umm … dependable is good (and other adjectives I hear Licht say).

Speaking of dependable … Did Miguel feed my tiger? He only eats wagyu.

  38. SlyPirate Says:

ZERO chance my Glazer post makes it to the public, but h opefully Joe got a good laugh.

  39. lambchop Says:

    @pmarcello,

Don’t mix your meds with booze. Calm down.

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

    Sly Pirate,
Made me laugh. Gotta love a good rant!

  41. lambchop Says:

    @SlyPirate,

What did you want Malcolm to do? Give the Bucs to you? This is not nepotism. This is called ownership or, cynically, you could call it capitalism.

  42. Tony Marks Says:

    SO umm

    Baker Bois = The Glazers

Its not even possible for us to have done a better job taking over the franchise. Time to invite a herd of former Browns fans over here for the paaaarTEY

    🙂 🙂

  43. Gene Says:

Mahombs, Love, Allen, are the QBs I like as well as Baker, generally. Out of this who would I trade Baker for? None. I think Baker’s a blast to watch play, he’s got an attitude that’s better for the fans and the team and with better production from the team last season, the BUCs would’ve been IN the championship game. It’s not IF Baker can get you there, he has produced plenty of yards, drives, big plays, and touchdowns in all four playoff games he’s played in. In all of those games a lot of other players left plenty of plays on the table. He also has stayed pretty well healthy and his arm and accuracy are more than enough. My answer is that a franchise QB is one who has talent like Baker, or Dak and will play great and give the team a shot in the playoffs like Baker and Allen, and Mahombs. If you want to know the difference in a Superbowl team, go watch the Chiefs or 90s Cowboys or niners games…go watch the BUCS last road to the Superbowl. Baker will give the team a shot but the team will have to make those plays they left on the table last year.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I am 100% behind Mayfield to start the season. The rest will depend on his performance,

  45. Gainesville Buc Says:

If we could improve the O-line and have a rushing game worth talking about I believe we can be a dangerous team.

  46. Marky Mark Says:

It is a year to year business. Baker set himself up for success with a handpicked oc. Draft that kid from Missouri as RB.

  47. Dave Pear Says:

One of the biggest obstacles to success, that Baker overcame last season, is the losing practice habits and inept game management of the losing head coach.

Baker led the Bucs to a division title and playoff victory in spite of the Toddster.

That’s hard to do, not even Brady could do it.

  48. Toad Bowels Says:

    Let’s Freaking Bake!

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

So I guess everyone forgot the 6 games losing streak.

  50. GhostofBrady Says:

    Boss Says:
“One season makes a franchise qb now……..
    I need that job.
    Put me in coach!”

$179.4M Guaranteed for Jalen Hurts, $159.8M Guaranteed for Kyler Murray, $92M Guaranteed to Daniel Jones says “Yes ONE SEASON makes a franchise qb”.

Considering Baker took two teams to playoff victories including one that hadn’t won a playoff game in nearly 30 years, Baker is as franchise as they come that is not ELITE. Franchise and ELITE are two different things. Both get paid well. ELITE players have proven it consistently. Franchise are getting paid like they have proven it consistently.

I am still trying to figure out why the heck Justin Herbert got $217.8M Guaranteed and Derek Carr got paid $100M Guaranteed as neither has even come close to sniffing a playoff victory regardless of how bloated their stats without much team success show.

The BUCS got the bargain of the year in 2023 with Baker. They probably got the bargain of the 2024 free agency with Baker and Evans tandem locked up for two years for potential serious playoff runs.
