Jason Licht Thinks New Bucs Corners Add Depth

March 27th, 2024

Breaking down two new corners.

The Bucs will have at least two new corners this fall. And it doesn’t sound like either will start.

This month the Bucs signed Tavierre Thomas and Bryce Hall. And it seems from the word of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, the veteran duo isn’t quite camp meat but they probably aren’t starters either — more like veteran backups who can play special teams.

“If anything, [they are] great depth, if not competing for starting jobs,” said Licht. “Tavierre is a really tough, instinctive player, can run, extremely aggressive.

“We like him in the nickel spot; he can also play a little outside and is really good on [special] teams.”

Thomas has logged six seasons in the NFL, none as a starter.

Hall spent four seasons Jets, one year as a starter.

“Bryce is going to compete for time outside, playing in the nickel, playing on third down,” Licht said. “They’re competing for jobs. I thought those were two really good depth pieces that we were able to get.”

Veteran depth is great to have. Still, Joe wouldn’t be thinking the Bucs secondary is set with those two. The Bucs drafting a corner on the first or second day of the draft? Wouldn’t be a stretch.

Goodmorning Joe Bucs family. I’m not sure how we can just hand the keys over to Zion M. as CB1, how do you pass on a kool aid McKenzie cb Alabama or N. Wiggins from Clemson at 26 as shutdown corners or atleast better than anything we have! Love the cornerback depth now but I’m just sold at all we have some shutdown guy.

  2. Casual Observer Says:

Iowa State has a third-team all-American CB in the draft named TJ Tampa. Hmm. Maybe that would be too confusing though.

  3. Capt.Tim Says:

Our Secondary is looking pretty good right now.
If anything, Id like to see a replacement for Dean.
Zyon has the talent to be exceptional. Izien was good as a rookie slot Corner. He should be better this year. We’ve improved our depth.
Whitehead and Winfield Jr are as good as you could ask for.
Still need depth at safety and Cb. But you can say that most years.

I like our secondary. But as last year proved, without a pass rush, no secondary can possibly hold up.
We all celebrated Jason Licht resigning our players.
But now he as to improve last years team.

At the Start of free agency, we needed to Replace
    Shaq,Ryan Jensen, Marpet, and JPP.
We’ve had Backups trying to fill their shoes unsuccessfully.

We still havent replaced one of them yet.

Dont Celebrate yet, Mr.Licht. You are far from done.

Draft and edge rusher first then Devin White’s replacement. After that the holes ca e filled…RB, OL etc.

  5. teacherman777 Says:

    Dean is CB #1.
    McCollum is CB #2.

Dean will miss games. Zyon might.

We need a CB in the 3rd round. Maybe 2. Just for fun.

  6. Bucs Guy Says:

We don’t need to draft secondary unless it’s day 3. Bigger needs on Edge, OLine, ILB and Power RB.

  7. Capt. Tim Says:

Zyon played more snaps last year than Dean or Davis. He was or number one corner. He’ll be even better this year.
Its to the point that you have to expect Dean to miss half the season, so we have to have good depth behind him.
We signed 2 decent CBs. We also have Josh Hayes from last year. He could be a factor.
Drafting a Cb and a safety in 4th-7th round seems wise.

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

My brother Tavierre Thomas, who went to Ferris Bueller State, has started 22 games in his career. He’d probably do okay if Izien was out.

  9. PSL Bob Says:

So, we might draft a middle LB, we might draft a CB, we’ve talked about the need for a productive edge rusher, we need a good RB to address the absence of a running game, and Godwin and Evans won’t be around for ever, so a good No. 3 WR might be advisable. Sounds like other than Safety, we’ve got a lot of holes to plug, particularly when it comes to depth. Doubt we can go wrong with the #26 pick.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’d be a little shocked by CB R1 but you never know.

In terms of pure needs we are talking about a backup outside perimeter corner, or someone that would push Zyon or Dean to being a backup when each are adequate starters. Or someone to start at nickle while pushing 2 other capable starters to backup roles. It’s more like we need depth to cover injury.

As we go into this draft these are the thoughts I have on need:

We have no established edge rusher next to Yaya.
We have no legit starting LG.
We have a bottom tier starting C.
We have had a bottom tier run game and RB production for years.

KJ Britt was a capable ILB but we have no depth there or future after Lavonte.
All the CB/S starter spots are capable but we lack depth there.
We have a promising #3 WR but also will be running way more 3 WR sets similar to the Rams with Coen’s offense.

We are good at DT, OT, & QB for now.

If we are matching need + value we will come out of R1 & R2 with edge + interior O-line, and then a RB + WR + either CB or ILB in R3-R4 (since we have 3 picks). Then lates round I’d attack interior OL and edge again.

  11. Leighroy Says:

I just want to see CBs who line up closer than 15yards from their assignment and/or aren’t already backpedaling behind the sticks on 3rd down when the ball is snapped.

  12. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Deion Sanders is one of the greatest cornerbacks of all time.

Deion was a great player on the Falcons defense that got routinely beat up like a red headed step child by the other team’s offense because Atlanta had zero pass rush.

Defense is only as good as your pass rush.

It doesn’t matter even if you have Deion Sanders at cornerback if the other team’s quarterback has all day to throw.

You defense will get destroyed if you don’t have a pass rush.

  13. JimBobBuc Says:

Pass rush!!! Hall had a lot of snaps last year and only had 1/2 sack. We need an upgrade over JTS.

Trade Dean away in exchange for a proven DT3 or Edge.

  14. Capt.Tim Says:

A linebacker can be an edge rusher.
We fill 2 needs at once. Get one in first 3 rounds

  15. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Pretty much everyone agrees, get a stud edge rusher and center with premium R1 and R2 picks. I would love to see a power RB in R3 like Braelon Allen or Audric Estime along with DB help on the second R3 pick. Maybe a quality depth LB R4. Regardless this is a pretty strong roster considering they were in Cap hell and had a lot of aging veterans they brought back for another SB run with Brady

  16. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Sorry Joe, I went off topic. Thomas is a very good add for depth, Hall can challenge for a starter role after Bowles coaches him up

  17. sweti_yeti Says:

Drafting a CB on day 1 or 2 is not out of the question at all, but it’s still lower on the list of priorities than IOL, EDGE, or help at RB and TE. I’d even say getting another threat at WR would be a more impactful pick for us (even though I expect Palmer to take a big step forward this year).
