“It’s Dramatically An Accelerant To Success”

March 13th, 2024

Fire lighter GM Jason Licht.

One 10-year NFL veteran with a Super Bowl ring firmly believes Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht knows what the hell he is doing.

Retired offensive tackle Ryan Harris, Peyton Manning’s left tackle in Denver eight years ago, is giving Licht major respect for re-signing all his big-name free agents, and defensive tackle Greg Gaines and No. 2 running back Chase Edmonds.

In the mind of Harris, the Bucs’ moves maintain what drives the team on a daily basis.

“It’s dramatically an accelerant to success,” Harris said of re-signing a successful team’s own players. “Championship [Bucs] players who are still on that team, who still hold that expectation, which means that practices are tougher. That means the schedule on the road is tight because guys understand that, ‘Hey, this is football season. You had time to celebrate and go to Vegas and do all these things earlier in the year … but now it’s time to work.'”

Harris gave his remarks as a co-host on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Late Hits with Alex Marvez. He called the Bucs “four inches away” from the NFC title game and said that level of achievement should not be discounted.

“That’s a team that’s got the right culture,” Harris explained.

Go Bucs, we are right there

  2. SlyPirate Says:

Some year 2 rookie improvement, a couple of FAs, a solid draft and who knows?

  3. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Mr. Licht thinks like us fans do!! Win, Win ! no time to rebuild. Lets get Hassan Reddick and Whitehead and I think our D should be well off along with some draft picks sprinkled in!! Go Bucs…

    “The right culture.”

    Nice to hear…

  5. Cometowin2 Says:

Licht has really improved over the course of his time with the Bucs!

  6. Cometowin2 Says:

Licht has become a great GM while with the Bucs!

  7. J Says:

Maybe, but we’re also the team watching all available prospects at their position slip away in FA. The same thing happened last year, but we had no money. Now, we watch teams with worse cap situations than ourselves giving players these big deals, and getting better. So far all we’ve managed to do is field the same team.

  8. gbobucsfan Says:

still free like a trade is coming for an edge player

  9. Austing Says:

GET THE DB’S FROM THE PANTHERS!!! Dante Jackson or Vonn Bell… I still want to get Whitehead back, but that’s an option too

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

Hard to believe we need to thank Lovie Smith for choosing Licht 10 years ago.

  11. BucfanDMV Says:

Honestly what you have pointed out J is correct, there hasn’t been any improvement so far with the roster. I don’t call getting rid of Davis an improvement even though some people think it is. The interior OL needs serious help and I don’t trust Bowles and company to get that right in the draft, and the edge rusher issue is still a problem.

  12. J Says:

I believe Licht has fallen behind on this. Disagree all you want. Are we really going to draft a CB AND an Edge believing they’ll develop that quickly? That’s not impossible if you’re picking high enough in the draft, but I don’t see it happening.

  13. J Says:

Donte Jackson was traded to Pitt for Dionte Jackson. This is what I’m talking about. If we can’t get another quality CB in FA ( for which there are not many left, if any) then we need to get a guy like Cooper DeJean, and I doubt he’ll be there when we li k. He’s too good.

  14. J Says:

*doubt he’ll be there when we make our pick.

  15. NutterBuccer Says:

An outsider saying the bucs are a team with the right culture….isn’t this what we all hoped for post brady. For the bucs not to go back to being the Yucs. Bad seasons will come but let’s pray we keep going on the up and up and have an Organzation like the ravens, steelers, pats (not good now but future is bright with new staff and tons of money)..chiefs, for years to come

  16. Baking with Evans Says:

It feels good to have them all back but specially Baker. No disrespect to Trask but I can’t see him producing the juice to his teammates as Baker does. With Baker the culture will grow even tighter.

Licht is making the right moves to have a chance at a NFC championship game.

    LFG!!!

  17. Larrd Says:

The Bucs and Chiefs have both won super bowls with a bunch of mid round rookies at db. My guess is they like Hayes and Izien and of course McCollum. No need to acquire a high priced veteran!

    Same with OLB.

  18. godlovesbucs Says:

The interior o line is not an issue. Licht has proven multiple times he has been able to fill that need in the draft.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

goflovesbucs … ‘The interior o line is not an issue. Licht has proven multiple times he has been able to fill that need in the draft.’

I agree with you, BUT … JL had to fill those needs with guys drafted in the Top-3 Rounds (Wirfs, Mauch, Hainsey, Goedeke). We did the same thing with DLinemen (Vea, Kancey, Hall, JTS, Diaby). What we haven’t been spending any Top-3 picks on have been WRs (none since Godwin in 2017), TEs (none since OJ in 2017), and ILBs (none since White in 2019). Even CBs drafted in the Top-3 Rounds came primarily in the influx of the 2019 class (SMB, Dean, Edwards to a degree).

I think your take is spot on. We were a 9-8 team. That ended up one of the 8th best teams in the league by winning a playoff game. Our record is our record. Regardless of how people try to over-analyze the results. To win more in the playoffs and take that next step, just signing the top 5-6 internal free agents won’t cut it. Based on how well the Falcons are doing right now in FA, we need to up our game. Replace some pieces with better pieces on the market. I don’t have the scouts or the expertise that Licht and his team have. But I do have eyes. And we haven’t made any additions that move our team forward just tread water. I don’t think the draft is the answer for most our needs in 2024. It may allow us to bridge for 2024 and improve in 2025. I’m all for finding some FA in run game (RB and interior line) and some edge. Some nice ones just came off the board. Disappointing we did not even make a stab at these. Maybe we are waiting for the dust to settle to get some bargains. I just hope we don’t bargain deal with crumbs rather than pieces.

The recent signings are a vivid example of any culture change. Although in fairness..yep…started with Licht..who found BA who then got Brady and Bowles and laid the foundation, I’d call it a culture continuation. And the Glazers deserve a ton of the credit since they are the only connection.

The team is in great shape as evidenced by the recent FA signings. Forget Winfield and Wirfs they were young guys who were going to get their’s over the long term..ME13, LVD, and Mayfield are about now.

ME and LVD are now in a loud discussion about the HOF. The next two seasons and WHERE they play them, with WHICH team mean a TON. IT’s the capstone to their entire careers. Mayfield is not HOF but this is his chance to prove he belongs as a starting QB in the NFL.

MUCH MORE than simple $$$ were on the line for these guys. It was the biggest decision of their careers and they chose the Bucs!

Lots of people here have opinions. None of us have our careers on the line shooting off our mouths on a blog. These guys had virtually ALL OF THEIR SKIN in the game and they chose the Bucs. These guys who are professionals with careers on the line chose the Bucs. I’m sorry guys but that pretty well overrides any negative opinions here on JBF. Take a hike Boss! Things are looking good for the Bucs headed into next season as EVIDENCED by guys who put more than their OPINIONS on the line…three of them have laid their careers out there…HOF? Real starting NFL QB? All three agreed the Bucs gave them their best chance for success!!!

  22. Daniel Z Says:

For everyone moaning about Licht not adding one of the top edge rushers, I understand your frustration, but there’s no way the Bucs could afford a deal like those guys get. The Texans gave Hunter 49 million over 2 years.

  23. TampabayDJ Says:

Bucs just got Jordan Whitehead back ! Now if that’s not a true upgrade for the team, I don’t know what is. JW will step right in and make sure our defense is solid on the back end and take pressure off of A.W. to do it all. As for Carlton Davis , he isn’t meant for this defense. He is a press man corner, not a zone CB . Zion McCollum showed he was one of the most improved players on the team last year. He’s ready. J.L. is doing excellent work in FA so far. Go Bucs and real Bucs fans

  24. Call your Mom Says:

All those teams with worse cap situations, giving all the big name free agents huge deals. Will continue to do what they always do land 2 or maybe 3 big names in the off season, but let 4 or maybe 5 they already had go in free agency. Props to Mr. Licht for handling the anchors we already have, to keep them put first. Let’s figure out Mr. Winfield’s deal, then see what we can do in the free agency and the draft! Go Bucs!!!
