“It Helped A Lot”

March 18th, 2024

Yes, Tom Brady was a part of the 2023 Buccaneers, even though he was mostly busy in South Florida playing entrepreneur and playing with his cats, and refusing to talk Bucs football on his weekly podcast.

If Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht really wants more national respect for his football team, then he might want to start by texting Mr. Seven Rings.

Licht was talking about Brady and “The Brady Effect” (Licht’s phrase) during Licht’s recent visit to the 3 and Out podcast. He said of The Brady Effect that “it helped a lot” with the Bucs winning tough games down the stretch in December and January.

Licht reiterated what he said when Brady was signed in 2020 — that the impact of Brady’s presence and teachings would last for years beyond Brady’s few years with the Bucs.

The Brady Effect was supposed to carry on through young players,”showing them what it takes to win,” Licht said.

So not only is Tampa Bay the defending NFC South champ with a young roster, a Pro Bowl quarterback and re-signed Hall of Fame caliber players in Mike Evans and Lavonte David, the team is feeding of The Brady Effect.

Joe smells another division title, maybe a strong playoff run if the Bucs invest in their pass rush and add an average handoff taker in the backfield.

Team definitely has championship effect. Just need that Edge

  2. Dave Pear Says:

The Brady Effect needs to be even stronger to overcome the Bowels Effect. Baker has some of that pitbull in him, but the defense is lacking that. As has been said by others, we need a real prick on defense. With no pass rush and Todd’s zone bust telegraphed blitz packages, points will be given up in droves unless the players overcome the confusing over-complicated defensive schemes of the Great Defensive Masturmind.

  3. MadMax Says:

We got a new CB, Tavi Thomas from Houston….dont know much about him.

  4. Bubby Says:

There was no Brady carry effect in NE, and there was none in Tampa in 2022 (when he was on the team!). Thrilled for our shared success, but whatever. Move on.

The ring of honor Joe that keeps pumping out rosey content might be in store for a tough season.

  5. adam from ny Says:

yeah maximum of one pick in the draft between cb/s because we’ve signed a lot of guys…

    not dudes…………..guys

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

Guess JTS and Logan Hall missed out on the Brady Effect. They were probably stumbling around outside. Staring at clouds and looking for clovers

Same thig those two useless hammerheads do during the games.

    Figures.

  7. Bucs Guy Says:

Bucs need a power “handoff taker”. I like Estime from ND or Allen from Wisc (if medically OK) in the 3rd along with Van Pran C of UGA. Bucs shouldn’t use a 3rd to trade up in the 1st because they have too many needs.

If anything, the Bucs may consider trading back in the 1st and picking up an extra 3rd rd pick to get an ILB (Trotter from Clemson) after going Edge and G with its first 2 picks.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe smells another division title, maybe a strong playoff run if the Bucs invest in their pass rush and add an average handoff taker in the backfield.’

I would’ve been right there with you Joe IF you just hadn’t added the word AVERAGE before ‘handoff talker in the backfield’. Bucs don’t need another AVERAGE running back; we need a BEAST who can move mountains. We need an A-Train that no one wants to tackle.

Our 3rd down percentage last year (41.5%) wasn’t gross, but it wasn’t great either. During our 13-4 year (2021), we converted 47.1% of those opportunities. Heck we converted 43.5% in our 2020 SB year, and that was after a mediocre start.

More important though, our Red Zone percentage last year (44.9%) REALLY SUCKED. It sat at 52.0% in our 8-9, 2022 year, at 66.2% in 2021 and at 68.9% in our 2020 SB year. That’s like a 24% difference … ABYSMAL. WE NEED A REAL BEAST to get those 1st downs and punch it in when we’re sitting near the goal line. No AVERAGE beast … a REAL beast.

Since AJ Dillon (my admitted favorite for the role) re-signed with the Packers, I say we NEED to draft a REAL BEAST. Audric Estime from Notre Dame (5’11” & 227 lbs) is a possibility (Walter Football has him ranked as #4 RB going in Rnds 2-3). Dillon Johnson from Washington (6’0″ & 218 lbs) is also a possibility (ranked as #6 & described as a ‘big back who can run through contact & wear on a defense’). But my favorite is still Braelon Allen from Wisconsin (6’1″ & 245 lbs) (ranked as #10 and expected to go in Rnds 3-5). Not just a beast, but he can catch the ball too.

  9. Dave Pear Says:

Watch Licht grab BC from CSU in the 7th, or as UDFA.

  10. It's Corn Says:

no offense but that is a load of hero worship garbage

If this “Brady Effect” is so special, how come the Patriots stunk after he left???

You already had Evans and LVD and JPP and Suh and Shaq, they were already leaders, come Brady or not.

  11. Buccos Says:

I’m not too comfortable with letting Shaq Barrett go. He could have a bounce back season this year. I was at the home opener when his interception won the game. He is a baller. Always felt more comfortable when he was on the field

  12. mg Says:

The billion dollar effect created by TB-12 was pocketed by Mandarin bobby k.
    Pathetic.

  13. Tbbucs3 Says:

There is no more “Brady effect”….he’s gone so I dont even know what that means at this point…..

Once a great player leaves, their effect leaves the locker room too. The Patriots are a dumpster fire so I guess theres no Brady effect there either.

This is Bakers team now and he’s responsible for reviving a dying culture from 2022. Its the Baker effect now.

  14. Greg Says:

Ask Mike Evans, Chris Godwin,Tristan Wirfs and LVD what the ” Brady effect” is! NE did not have the personell to perpetuate the ” Brady effect” the Bucs do and have. ME just by himself personafies how much of a cultural influence he had. Those that do not see that are not looking deep enough.

  15. Larrd Says:

The Brady effect helped kill the Bucs spirit the year before.

  16. lambchop Says:

Thank you Tom Brady. That was a beautiful season and Cinderella ride. I’ll give you a mulligan for that last season. You deserve a mulligan going through a public divorce and inheriting Todd Bowles and BL.

  17. RGA Says:

We should all keep things in prospective. If the Bucs played in another competitive division, there is no talk of repeat division winners. This Bucs team has been the best of a bad lot of downtrodden teams. Our Bucs team hovers around a 500 win loss record. The Bucs cannot rely on our fellow division teams to always be incredibly worse then our team.

  18. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Licht stocking up on secondary FAs and a couple of guards. Bodes well for drafting edge, center and LB and another RB.

  19. RGA Says:

Brady’s last season stats were not bad at all with a makeshift on the cusp offensive line. I thought he could play another year or two.

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

    Heres a fact.
Barry Sanders and Earl Campbell couldnt have ran behind our miserable line last year.
Draft who you want. Sign any Free agent.
Until we fix our Left Guard and Center- you are just gonna watch’em get hit in the backfield.
And I gave Cody Mauch a pass last year( which Marine buc stole multiple times),
But he was even worse than Stennie and Hainsey.
He has to make a HUGE jump this year.

We signed 2 guys for depth, but neither is starter material. Both should compete,
But they likely arent our starters. And starting Rookies is usually a mistake.
    See “ Cody Mauch”.

Baker had 2.3 seconds on average in the pocket. Thats pathetic. The good lines are over 3 seconds. Philly was over 4.

    Fix the line
That will fix the Running game. My ancient old arse could get 100 yards behind Phillys line.
It will also give Baker time to hit the deep shots to Trey Palmer.
Baker was in the top 5 for completions over 20 yards. He holds the all time NFL record for longest pass in the air. He has the strongest arm in the league.
Give him time, and our long passing game will be lethal.

But it has to be be the Line we fix first

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Capt Tim maybe a promotion for you is in order.

    Colonel Tim.

  22. Let ‘em bake Says:

Cody needs to pile that plate to the sky…we need him to be a corn-fed nebraska hog.

  23. NCBuc Says:

@ a certain Joe….. You talk about this average hand off taker. Well White ran the ball for 4.1 yards a carry over the last 10 games of the season. Pretty sure that’s really close to average with the OL we had

    Only one Tom
Need a voice of a champion in locker room

  29. RGA Says:

Any chance Joe Bucs fan will let me post?

  30. Capt Ahab Says:

Brady played his last season behind a patch work offensive line. He still had pretty good stats, led the team to the playoffs in a weak division.

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

Greg, the problem with that logic is that Evans, Godwin, Wirfs were all here in 2022 WITH Brady and the culture still absolutely sucked that year.

If the so called might “Brady Effect didnt work when he was here in 2022 why the heck would it be a thing when he’s going to be working in a FOX booth.

Not to mention, Brady was angling to join the Dolphins instead of the Bucs even after his great 2021 season so Brady doesnt have as much loyalty to the Bucs as fans may think he does.

  32. Tbbucs3 Says:

And Capt Ahab, the Bucs defense and a weak NFC south are the reasons the Bucs made the 2022 post season…..the only thing Brady lead that year was a bottom 5 offense.

  33. Capt Ahab Says:

Let’s think a moment. The Detroit playoff game, with a minute and a half left down by 8 points, needing a touchdown and two point conversion. Who would you want under center, Brady or Mayfield?

  34. Capt Ahab Says:

Additionally Brady threw for about 500 yards more then Mayfield in Brady’s last year.

  35. Capt Ahab Says:

The only way the Bucs made the playoffs this past year was a weak division.

  36. Capt Ahab Says:

Bucs were 14th in offense FYI

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Additionally Brady threw for about 500 yards more then Mayfield in Brady’s last season”

Super misleading stat. Brady threw 733 pass attempts in 2022 compared to Bakers 566 attempts

  38. Larrd Says:

Goedeke, Mauch, Hainsey, and even Wirfs should be improved this year. A first rounder to add to the group would be great, but I expect the improvement we saw at the end of the year is going to stick.

  39. Tbbucs3 Says:

And unless your cherry picking stats, the Bucs were absolutely not a “top 15 offense” in Bradys last year…..

They were 27th in scoring which is the main stat that matters.

Did you not watch the games that year? Every single game was a punt fest and were frequently booed off the field.

  40. Noclu4u Says:

Why is none of the talking heads addressing the biggest weakness on the team . Everybody keeps screaming pass rusher . The Bucs o-line was atrocious last season. One of the worst in NFL history . Yes a great pass rusher would be great . Good luck finding one . Got a year to develop one from the draft ? Bucs need a center very badly . Got a much better chance of hitting on an O-linman than a D-lineman at the 26th pick.
    As always Go BUCS!

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    It’s Corn Says:
“If this “Brady Effect” is so special, how come the Patriots stunk after he left???”

Brady changed the culture in New England…20 years earlier. By the time Brady left New England, he was taken for granted. Even the fans were ready to move on. The fact that he won another SB after leaving bugged the heck out of them.

When he came to Tampa, he and Arians changed the entire culture, and it is still a fresh change.

He pulled the best out of his teammates in Tampa. Demanded it. And some of those players took it to heart and are still here.

    The Brady Effect.

“Greg, the problem with that logic is that Evans, Godwin, Wirfs were all here in 2022 WITH Brady and the culture still absolutely sucked that year.”

Not true. We were plagued with injuries. We had 3rd stringers starting. The culture didn’t suck, the replacement players sucked.

Not to mention, Brady was angling to join the Dolphins instead of the Bucs even after his great 2021 season so Brady doesn’t have as much loyalty to the Bucs as fans may think he does.

That was an unproven rumor. In fact, I believe the NFL investigated it as recently said the Dolphins did not tamper…which means they didn.t even talk to Brady.

  43. Capt Ahab Says:

Official scoring by the NFL ranks them 10th under Tom Brady’s last year period!
Accept the results TBBUCS3, can’t change history.

  44. BakerBucs says Says:

The only loyalty Brady had was & is to Brady so sick of hearing bout his divorce poor boy he was in a heap of crap he was the 1 selling the sam brinkman freed scandal he was gone for 11 days covering his ass so he didn’t go to prison with the rest of them crooks just like his football cheat scandle being fined he is a dirty bum can’t believe u people stick up for him as he sets sail on his 200 million dollar yacht

  45. BakerBucs says Says:

Capt ahab says r u a dor head where did u get Those made up # from the ding bat library a team with 8&9 record is a total impossible stat to be ranked 10 only 1 making up #’s is u dot head

  46. BakerBucs says Says:

Capt dot head Brady had 500 more yards but had a losing record baker had a winning record so stuff that stat where u pin that dot on u r forehead I bet u ride camels or eat them

  47. BakerBucs says Says:

RGA says u r still here very disappointing

  48. MadMax Says:

We’re gonna have to trade up to Cinci or the Jags pick if we want Powers….gotta get in front of Pitt.

Jags are looking for a DT. Dare I say it? One of our 3rds and Big V for that 17th? I dont know, dont even want to think about losing big man I pushed so hard for us to draft, and what the dead cap hit would be. But some way we’ve got to jump up into the late teens.

  49. MadMax Says:

That would give us Powers and then our 26th for Dejean.

  50. westernbuc Says:

I think a great year would cement the Brady effect. Two years removed with

  51. westernbuc Says:

*Two years removed from Brady while having set a winning example with young guys will keep this team winning for a long time

  52. Zoocomics Says:

Everything starts in the trenches if we’re going to be better than last season.

  53. J Marzullo Says:

What a bunch of hooey. Not one player thought of Brady during the 2023 season. LMAO.

  54. Brandon Says:

Funny how Brady changed the culture but we were awful in 2022 BECAUSE of Brady… no other reason. Brady audibled to short and ineffective passes for the first three quarters of every game. This is why Brady was at the top of the NFL in completions and attempts but at the very bottom in yards per attempt and yards per completion. Our offense was awful in 2022 and Mr. Brady is the primary reason behind it.

  55. Brandon Says:

Rachaad White carried 158 times for 658 yards in the last nine games, including playoffs, last year. He averaged 4.2 yards per carry… he has arrived.

  56. Aaron Says:

Lol sounds like gonna chase another lol with that young roster we got the right Young y’all can chase all you want lol

Baker had 2.3 seconds on average in the pocket. Thats pathetic. The good lines are over 3 seconds. Philly was over 4.

I think this is a fake analysis with no support.

Bucs line not a good line. But they were a better than average pass blocking line and have been for the last few years. Run blocking a different story.

  58. Tbbucs3 Says:

Agree Brandon, Brady was awful and disinterested in 2022 and now a superbowl winning OC is sitting at home because of it

  59. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bonzai, the culture was not good in 22…..the team was full of disinterested washed vets like Coolio Jones who just wanted to collect their paychecks and get the season over with…..

Go back and look at the sideline body language throughout that season especially in the Pittsburgh game….players look unenthused running out of the tunnel each and completely bored when Bowles made his post game speeches in the locker room.

It was a dying culture and Baker revived it. Simple as that

  60. GhostofBrady Says:

The Brady Effect = $TensOfMillions in DEAD CAP
The Brady Effect = a malaise like watching the sunset on an aging team drunk on pina coladas
The Brady Effect = his pre-Buc handpicked guys retiring or going off into the waiver wire
The Brady Effect = the core Buc players on defense and offense having a belief the team can make playoff runs with the right leadership at QB, this is the only one that helped the 2023 team and may help the 2024 team.

Now it’s up to the team take a top 15 QB that does not throw up crazy interception numbers and run with the core talent we have. And add some pieces to keep it going after 2024.

  61. matthew veal Says:

If Devin white had done more of the things to meet the training standards brady set, it would have been even better.
