Baker Mayfield Talks Future; All 14 Baker Mayfield Spring Training Swings (Video)

March 8th, 2024

Mike Evans was talking today at One Buc Palace. His quarterback (former?) was talking yesterday across the street.

Baker Mayfield was a guest of the New York Yankees at Steinbrenner Field for a Spring Training game.

Mayfield took a little batting practice (he definitely gave Joe a Kevin Kiermaier vibe) and talked to the YES network about the Bucs and his love of baseball.

“Gonna find out here in the next week or so. Just working on that right now,” Mayfield said when asked about his football future. “And God’s got a plan for me, so just trust in that. One day at a time.”

Joe was intrigued to hear Mayfield reference “the next week or so.” Free agency opens Monday with the legal tampering period that would allow Mayfield to negotiate with other teams.

Still, Mayfield didn’t hesitate to share his Bucs love and for what was accomplished last season.

“It was an unbelievable year,” Mayfield said. “Really truly, the group we had is what made it special.”

Unless some team offers a buttload of guaranteed cheese, why would he want to start over?

  2. Rover Says:

This guy is good as gone! Let the hunt begin.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, that is quite needy, being across the street from RayJay as Evans is in the building at One Buc Place getting his new deal. Kind of sad to have to pull a stunt like that to get some attention.

    Is everything OK Baker?

PS. I’m mostly just teasing, having fun with the Baker Boi(s) who will be quick to explain how they were going through Baker’s trash and know everything is OK, in fact he’s better than OK.

  4. Bucsmarley Says:

Any more than 28m I say let him walk and cash in what will probably be his last big payday. Anyone that thinks he’s worth 40 m is sure mistaken. He’s honestly had 2 decent years in the last 6. As far as last year if those are his career high numbers I would take a hard pass. Watched every game and was not impressed for the most part. Flashy, streaky and inconsistent. My opinion is as always he’s a .500 qb. He would be great to put in when the 4th qtr comes around because it seems that’s when he decides to play…..excluding the Green Bay game before the baker boys swarm and attack me. Still want to see a poll on if the fans on this sight think he’s worth 40m. Just my thoughts

  5. Popcorn Mike Says:

I love Mayfield but if he wants to hit the free agent market so be it It’s too many bad QB contract going around the NFL these days I would definitely like to see what team that would offer Mayfield more than $32 to $34 mil per year. I am sure there are some but, those are usually the teams that has been bad for a while and still have some issues with winning

  6. geno711 Says:

Weren’t there a whole bunch of GMs on this site that said that Baker was going to be signed the next day right after Mike Evans.

Even that it was already done deal and they just wanted Mike to have the spotlight day alone.

Are those folks even willing to admit they were wrong?

  7. Rod Munch Says:

geno711 – Well he WAS going to be signed the next day, but because the news leaked, they didn’t want to announce it because that would be rewarding the leakers. So that’s why they’re holding it off.

Although, since I leaked that news, they might now wait again as to not reward me.

  8. Boss Says:

let him walk… he was nothing more than a mediocre game manager

  9. Boss Says:

they should re-up trask on the cheap and send him a message lol

  10. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

We will see just how mediocre mayfield was when he’s gone. And the shills here will no longer post due to embarrassing comments made out of pure ignorance over and over again here. I told you so, but as dave pear so eloquently post time and again; ‘you just can’t fix stupid’.
I hope team glazer don’t go full on culverhouse because everyone knows the money is…. There.

  11. McGz Says:

He’s signed at 3 years x 6.5 on my Madden 24 and I just won the Super Bowl.

We will see just how mediocre mayfield was when he’s gone.

    ———

Like in 2021 and 2022, when he didn’t have Evans bailing him out and he was literally the worst QB in the NFL over that span?

  13. D Cone Says:

If Mayfield signs Trask should do what most self servers do and ask to be traded.

It will be our little secret. 🙂

LOL.. you made me almost snort my drink.

You’ve already taught us that since you met those conditions for most of the year
and still post we would be golden.

  16. OHBucFan Says:

Maybe just maybe he’s letting Mike have his day or two in the sun. Bucs can own this week and the beginning of next week with Antoine, Mike and Baker. Good PR.

If Mayfield signs Trask should do what most self servers do and ask to be traded.

Since Licht has indicated no sign of interest for Kyle I guess Kyle would have to sneak into another teams front office and take the call.

  18. Trask To The Future Says:

“God has a plan for me” = Bucs refused to give me the big contract I wanted.

  19. WyomingJoe Says:

Btw, Baker hit two balls off the wall and also had a dinger. Let’s see what Trask can do.

Btw2, Baker will sign in four days and Trask will be traded in May.

    ^^^^^^^^
Yes, because Trask proved so much as the backup to, as you put it, a “mediocre game manager”. You might be the boss at the local Dollar General, but I thank God you’re not the boss of the Bucs.

    ^^^^^^^^^
HAHAHAHA, yes, any backup that played less than 5% of the plays would be laughed out of the league for asking for a trade when they’re lucky to have a job in the NFL at all.

  22. WyomingJoe Says:

Capt’n Munch: It’s going to be fun watching you eat your words about Baker in 2024 … just like you did last year!

  23. Marky Mark Says:

There really are a lot of non bucs fans with non football agendas on this board

  24. Trask To The Future Says:

    Wyoming Joe,

LOL. You mean like have many more games next season where he barely threw for 100 yards in the first half? Mayfield is mediocre at best regardless of his late-game stat padding when we were down multiple scores in many games.

  25. Marky Mark Says:

Wow, multi sport talented. Not like deon or Bo though.

  26. Boss Says:

LOOK….big joe just finished his keyboard push ups. Still a butthead in Michigan.

  27. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Baker isn’t going anywhere. The Bucs are his team now — and the best gig (even at $6.85MM) that he’s ever had.

My money is on that they’ve already had a preliminary agreement in place, so what’s happening right now is that they’re going to leverage the market for intel through at least the legal tampering days — and maybe even the beginning of the FA period. Smart strategy!

Who says that BM is not going to give TB a “hometown discount”? I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen — purposefully.

If you’ve watched his NFL career in detail as I have — you’d agree.

  28. Esteban85 Says:

Was that Wirfs in the background cheering him on? I’d bet he comes back

  29. ModHairKen Says:

Yeah. I was wrong. I thought they had him under contract when they tagged Winfield.

So this Keyboard GM is going to STFHU. For now.

  30. Ex-Browns02 Says:

ModHairKen: No, really, I think that you were correct. I think that they’re just working together to ensure maximizing the ’24 season potential.

All of this press, “they’re working hard on it, but they’re still far apart”….. Is just a smoke screen.

  31. Aaron Says:

Just give him the 20 million like y’all gonna wish you didn’t lol

  32. WyomingJoe Says:

Trask to the Future: You’re delirious. I think that you really believe your own BS lol!

  33. Trask To The Future Says:

    WyomingJoe,

Stats don’t lie. Look at how many games he barely threw for 100 yards or less in the first half of games. He also ranked 19th in QBR.

He’s far from elite and the Bucs know it which is why they haven’t given him a massive contract.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    The deal is done.

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Did we get robbed of our 2 compensatory picks???

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I could have sworn we were supposed to get 2 extra 3rd rounders this year.

  37. Oddball Says:

    @Esteban

Sure looked like Wirfs to me. Just on the right side. BM. Hmm? Interesting.

  38. Levin Says:

“Gonna find out here in the next week or so.”

He wants to test free agency. 💯 he’s gone.

  39. Stanglassman Says:

Stop Rod Munch. You are single-handedly sabotaging the Bucs free agency by leaking all your inside information.

  40. Rich Says:

BM played through injuries ,is tough and players rally around him. Tampa Bay gave him prove it deal , well he proved it.This is right situation for both TB BM

  41. RGA Says:

If Mayfield signs with the Falcons, that of course means the Bucs get to face him twice a year. There is not one defensive coordinator in the league that would lose any sleep game planning against Mayfield.

  42. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Fakerboi is a media harlot. He craves attention and will do anything to get it. His fanbois are the same. They come up here because they’re neglected at home and Baker doesn’t answer their emails

  43. Capt Ahab Says:

Opponents defensive coordinators lose no sleep game planning against Baker Mayfield, if he winds up with the Falcons, I’m sure Bowles has it covered.

  44. Tony marks Says:

    Ex-Browns02 Says:

All of this press, “they’re working hard on it, but they’re still far apart”….. Is just a smoke screen.

Doubt it Eisen intrview today wih Licht didn’t show me a GM tht was at ease. I think Licht thought this was in the bag. Baker was just going to roll over and out of great graitude give a second pay me below standard contract.

maybe Baker would but he wisely has put his agent on the job and the agent is wisely having none of that. Licht took no gamble. put the screws to Baker paying him less than many backups get o and showed the grand commitment of one year. Do’t wrong him . paying least you can is the Job for a GM

but none of that requirse gratitude from the agent and now its the agents time to do his agent job.

  45. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Is going to be Trask.

The Bucs will be SF 2.0 but only with a better QB next season.

    LFG

  46. Todd Rolls Says:

Question for Joe or one of the commenters can we slap a transition tag on Baker?

  47. Pickgrin Says:

How did no one (Joe?) notice that Tristan Wirfs is right there behind the fence cheering Baker on when he hit a couple good ones??

Baker’s not hanging with a (potentially former) teammate 3 days from the start of free agency unless he’s totally comfortable they will continue to be teammates.

Mayfield knows he’s coming back – even if the Bucs let him talk to other teams – its only to solidify his true value on the open market.

If Baker’s agent claims he’s worth over $40M and won’t budge – and the Bucs think he’s worth $30M or less – then the only way to break the stalemate is to see what kind of offers Baker actually gets and go from there.

Baker wants to be in Tampa Bay and the Bucs want Baker as their QB.

Even if there is not a signed deal between Baker and the Bucs on Monday when legal tampering starts – I would be willing to bet the Bucs and Mayfield have a signed deal before Wednesday which is the first actual day of free agency….

  48. RGA Says:

Licht should not saddle his responsibilities as a curator of this Bucs franchise with ridiculous numbers and years for Baker Mayfield. He has a responsibility to do his due diligence in the best interest of the current and long term future of this Bucs organization.

  49. D Cone Says:

For the Trask haters. Licht has said it’s not the time when he was asked at the time. Cousins signs with ATL Kevin O.C. will be looking for a pocket guy and like it or not Trask went toe to toe with Smurfette. Smart coaches know about all the QB’s out there and some may inquire. Would be a dumb move for the Bucs to let him go.

Once Cousins signs in ATL (like the Miami/Brady deal Florio was not wrong about Cousins asking Pitts about #8 and Miami denied it too) then Ma6field is next in line.

Licht will now have to spend because the NFC South could easily belong to the Falcons for the next 4 years.

Mayfield will then get well paid and he and Bowles will go on to lead the Bucs to 2-2 vs NFC East. 1-3 vs AFC West. 3-3 vs NFC South and still have 49ers, Ravens, and Lions. Last years prediction could be one year late. Teams will be better this year and the Bus will stay pretty much the same with Mayfield. Horrible 6-11. Believe they covered the 6 1/2 over last season. Betting the Under in 2024 will be like stealing. Mayfield will be robbing somebody this season so why not get in on it myself.

  50. ^^mtn^^ Says:

You don’t spend big bucks on Baker unless you’re sure he’ll do for the Bucs what Brees did for the Saints.

Even then, Saints have been in cap h e double toothpicks, kicking the can down the road for longer than I can remember

  51. Let ‘em bake Says:

Cousins is older. Tua is brittle. If both get big deals, bakers position is strengthened. Baker wants cousins in Atlanta . It makes the falcons the favorites to win their division ( third place schedule). It’s makes the Bucs chances of repeating more dependent on a solid qb…baker. He loses nothing by waiting out other qb signings( unless the Bucs have been talking to tannehill) ..a posssibility I’ve been pondering. With weapons( like he had with aj brown) tannehill for 15 million isn’t baker, but he could be plan b if baker bolts.

  52. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Went toe to toe with what his toe nail clippers I remember Licht saying that taking Trask was Huge mistake he was 3rd on qb roster & shud have taken an edge rush he made a mistake his words I haven’t heard 1 team player say anything good about Trask show me 1 sentence where 1 team mate said they wud like Trask just 1,no fake bs a real quote.

What did Licht say today on rich eison show it’s bakers call now,so u baker haters cross u r fingers u might get u r wish.in a way I hope baker takes another gig this mediocre posting site will reep what u sew

Here’s 2 from ME you lazy son of a buck. Took 5 seconds.

Next time, do your own homework bro.

I can tell you’re lazy by the way you normally type (ur, b u, wuz etc)

    Mike Evans:
“They both have big arms. They’re both very mobile, so they’re similar in that regard. Obviously, they’re a little different in size, but they have a similar playing style. Really good NFL quarterbacks.” (notice, not elite)

““Kyle’s improved a lot,” Evans told Ari Alexander of KPRC.”

    Get a stinkin’ job BAKERSBucs

  57. Shane Callahan Says:

Mike Evans stated that Baker is an elite QB, but the Baker haters know more than him. Baker will be back. He’s letting his agent do his job. I almost hate that Baker is going to take so many ungrateful Buc fans to another non-Brady Super Bowl. Y’all don’t deserve him.

  58. Shane Callahan Says:

He takes the Sooners who didn’t have a defense to the CFP. SI names this Heisman winner the greatest college QB since 2000. He resurrects THE BROWNS. He gets dealt to the hopeless Panthers because he played with a torn shoulder for his teammates in Cleveland for nearly an entire season. He defies all odds by leading this cap-straddled sub-average Bucs team to a playoff win. Yet, y’all still hate on him. It’s insane and makes me sick to my stomach.

  59. Ko Kiefer Says:

Jason Licht is absolutely taking the right tactic here. I can’t blame Baker’s camp here either.

Most likely scenario is Mayfield sees the underwhelming offers from MN and ATL and just takes the similar deal on the table from Tampa. We don’t need to over pay and I applaud the organization for showing some discipline on it.

  60. Ko Kiefer Says:

    Shane –

They were barely a game over .500 and they were considering benching him mid-season. Calm down. He was decent last year but cmon

  61. SenileSenior Says:

Both Jason Light as a GM and Baker Mayfield as QB are in the top third of the NFL in my assessment. Does this make them elite in their respective crafts? Note that I did not say top 3. Mike Evans is elite and will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame in the future.

    Go Bucs!!!

  62. Levin Says:

DavidBigBucsFan99 Says: “Fakerboi is a media harlot. He craves attention and will do anything to get it. His fanbois are the same. They come up here because they’re neglected at home and Baker doesn’t answer their emails.”

    LOLOLOL

  63. Levin Says:

Mike Evans on Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield:

“They both have big arms. They’re both very mobile. So they’re similar in that regard. Obviously, they’re a little different in size. But they have a similar play style. Really good NFL quarterbacks.”

That explains why Mike signed with the Bucs and did not wait for Mayfield to sign, going against what everyone here was saying. Just sayin’.

  64. Onetrickpony Says:

Well I enjoyed watching Mayfield this past year, I’m not going to lose any sleep if he leaves or stays. Like Jason said ,there is Kyle waiting in the background. I just wish we would know one way or the other so we can get on

  65. Jerry Says:

Some rumors are that Kirk Cousins is demanding more than $50 million a year.

    These QBs are crazy.

  66. Oneilbuc Says:

Shane. Baker Mayfield is not a elite quarterback and I don’t care what Mike says. We have 6 years that showed he’s not elite quarterback don’t play for 4 different teams in 6 years. And Oklahoma is in the big 12 no team in the big 12 plays defense. Kyle Trask led the NCAA in passing yards and touchdowns and he played in the SEC so let’s not compare the two colleges they played in.

  67. stpetebucfan Says:

    @Pickgrin

As usual excellent post with solid logic and reasoning and what a great pickup to notice Wirfs!

  68. Davyboy Says:

He said, “I dont care what pro bowler Mike Evans said about Baker”? Lmao. Who to believe, the Pro Bowl WR or the wanna be talent analyst for any NFL team that would take him but can’t tell the truth about the local elite NFL qb so he’ll stay an unknown blogger. Mmm🤔

  69. Davyboy Says:

    Brady the GOAT 8-9
    BAKER 9-8
    🤑show me the money

  70. Davyboy Says:

    Brady the GOAT QBR 2022-90.7
    Baker QBR 2023-94.6
    Same team, different numbers. Lol

  71. EternalSon Says:

    Batting lefty?

  72. Buc1987 Says:

    Davyboy…Brady’s a 7 time SB Champ.

Baker will never see a SB, unless it’s on TV.

  73. Davyboy Says:

    You’re missing the point 1987

  74. Davyboy Says:

Think real hard what the point might be. It’s not that hard

  75. Davyboy Says:

And if Baker can take a 0-16 team to an 11-5 team he can take a team to a superbowl. The more I think about your post the more I don’t think you’ll get the point.

  76. Davyboy Says:

You do realize Baker was the qb this year and the Bucs were within a game of the superbowl, right?? This was the year you were suppose to have won 4 games and then Baker showed up.

  77. Davyboy Says:

In case you haven’t got it yet, that was the point…

  78. Buc1987 Says:

Any point your trying to make is moot…because Brady won 7 SB’s.

  79. Buc1987 Says:

Davyboy… they weren’t within one game of the SB.

They lost in the divisional game.

  80. Davyboy Says:

    Never mind 1987

  81. ^^mtn^^ Says:

    “Davyboy Says:
And if Baker can take a 0-16 team to an 11-5 team he can take a team to a superbowl.”

Yes, think Bakey CAN lead the Bucs to a SB, but not without a better supporting cast.

The more you pay him, the less holes you can plug. That’s what most here are saying.

Look at it this way, how many average starters or solid backups can you get in FA with 10-15 mil?

    ^^mtnbucman^^
    Since ’76

  82. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker is a stud according to the actual NFL employees. I get that there a Florida homers that would like to see Trask play. Don’t you think the NFL employees would’ve played Trask if he was better? Get over it already!

  83. Shane Callahan Says:

Ps, Keshawn was talking out of his a** just like he always has.

  84. Shane Callahan Says:

I do, however, like one Keyshawn quote I’ll never forget, “D-backs are just wide receivers who can’t catch.” 🤣 That was good!

  85. Shane Callahan Says:

I like it because I was a d-back/ wrestler, and I’ve coached both for over 20 years. I’m a realist who just honestly wishes all y’all will appreciate my fellow Okie Baker. Yes, I’m a homer too. But, anybody knocking Baker doesn’t truly know football. For real!
