The Need For Speed

February 27th, 2024

Bucs GM Jason Licht at the combine in Indianapolis today.

When Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht stepped up to the podium to address the hundreds of assembled #NFLMedia in the room, he may have tipped folks off of a trait the Bucs are targeting this year in April’s draft.

The need for speed.

Licht was asked about Trey Palmer and his assessment of the rookie wide receiver. Licht said the Bucs need more players like him.

“He has learned multiple [receiver] positions for us and that’s always tough on a rookie,” Licht said. “And he has made some big plays for us. He is a guy that can take the top off for us.

“We need speed. We need more speed like that.”

Now when Licht mentioned the need for speed, he didn’t mention it was receiver. Does that mean running back? Tight end? Defensive backs?

Joe remembers last year the Bucs put an emphasis on speed for the draft as Todd Bowles and Licht thought the team was a little slow.

The Bucs had so much production from rookies and Joe is confident a big reason for that was their speed. So we shall see if the Bucs follow through on Licht’s declaration.

That receiver from Florida has a world of speed.

  2. Tony Marks Says:

or did he just tip his hand as to the strategy for the receiving core post Mike Evans?

@ a horse with no name.
Pearsall will probably run a 4.5. He doesn’t have breakaway speed but he has Hands of Glue and can get open when being doubled. He is going to make a good WR for someone.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

The need for speed begins with starting fast on both sides of the ball. But Todd Slowles prefers to give up a score on opponents’ opening drives. At least he likes to punt in the first quarter.

I’m curious to see Keon Colemans 40 time.

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Derrick Henry is 6’3 , 250 lbs and runs a 4.6 40

  9. Buc4evr Says:

Speed is great, but the Bucs need wide bodies and brute strength in the trenches even more.

  10. All_da_way Says:

Bucs need more speed off the edge, more speed at TE, more speed at RB and more speed with the safties.

  11. Dew Says:

Mecole Hardman is a FA ran a 4.33 at his 2019 Combine.

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

If you’re not big, you better be fast. If you’re not fast, you better be big. We were definitely faster last year than the year before, but I think we still need to be faster.

  13. Carlitin1988 Says:

definitely need some speed at the runningback position

  14. Dom Says:

Bucs need to find a slot guy to replace CG next year. He’s a quality WR but not worth big money anymore after his injury. Maybe he has a big season in 2024 but I don’t see it happening. Roman Wilson, Ricky Pearsall, or Ja’Lynn Polk would be good fits for that role

  15. Hodad Says:

Well there’s a scoop. Joe did you think he was going to say we need to get slower? No clear answers to any questions, glad you asked, but you could’ve skipped the trip to Indy all together, and got the same info.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Seems like Bucs have long been one of the faster teams in the league at LB & in the Secondary. At the same time, seems like we’ve also been one of the smaller teams at those positions. kinda wonder sometimes if that might be a reason behind why we seem to suffer so many injuries in the Secondary.

    @Boss, nice reference!

All I know is that I watched video highlights of Pearsall and he blows by SEC corners and safeties who likely are the fastest in the country.

I am a Die Hard Gators fan. I LOVE Pearsall but not before the third round. He is gonna be a Great WR in the NFL I believe however he is not a No. 1 at the NFL level. I could be wrong. He could be the next Cupp for all I know but that is my opinion.

  21. Proudbucsfan Says:

We dont need to worry about our wide receiver room, that’s our best position group. We need to get faster and stronger of the edges on defense and we need a fast and strong running back to go along with White and I think Ray Davis would be perfect for what Bowles wants to do. Davis is a beast and Coen knows him.

  22. D Cone Says:

How about starting fast. 42 1st quarter points for a 2.47 average a game in that quarter. Carolina scored 39 1st quarter points in 2023

Desmond Ridder (61) and Zack Wilson (47) put up more points than the Bucs in the 1st.

Keep depending on getting them in the 4th @ 115 and eventually the luck will run out.

@Dave Pear you are not even a fan. I can’t recall you ever saying anything nice or remotely constructive. Have you considered writing your posts standing on a crowded interstate?
