“That’s My Boy”

February 4th, 2024

Tristan Wirfs

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield wasn’t the only Tampa Bay player talking at the Pro Bowl in recent days.

The other Bucs player there was talking, too. That was right tackle turned left tackle Tristan Wirfs. (Mike Evans skipped the Pro Bowl.)

Wirfs said he enjoyed his time in Orlando and while there he gave a short call to WDAE radio. On the air, Wirfs was asked how much he’s leaning on Mayfield to re-sign with the Bucs.

Mayfield is a pending free agent, but the Bucs could slap the franchise tag on him later this month.

“Oh, he knows how I feel. That’s my boy,” Wirfs said of Mayfield, with a lot of juice in his voice.

“You know, love him to death, and I know it’s going to be a blast if he’s able to come back. He’s a great person.”

The locker room loves Mayfileld. Todd Bowles loves Mayfield and has since last March. Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht surely loves how Mayfield performed and guided the Bucs to a successful transition year following the Tom Brady era.

Everyone important seems to love Mayfield.

So it’s almost a sure thing that Mayfield wears Bucs colors next season. If Joe could wager on it, Joe would.

WELL. EVERYbody, except most of the members of this web site

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Baker haters and Trask lovers know more than Tristen Wirfs, the guys in the locker room, and the GM. I mean, obviously.

^What the he!! is That supposed to mean?

  5. Trask Cult Leader Says:

Mayfield is tough and somewhat charismatic and Joe likes personality QB’s, but Kyle Trask is the real deal. He has the potential to throw passes like CJ Stroud. He’ll get his chance somewhere.

Yo, Baker is a franchise-level QB, man.

This is a fan forum for the Bucs, right?

We had three awesome years and won the Lombardi with the GOAT.

Before that, we drafted the hottest QB who turned out to be a dud. Then we had a bunch of mediocre QBs and teams. You gotta go all the way back to Brad Johnson under Gruden, with Dungy’s experienced defense helping us win our first championship.

We haven’t had much luck with QBs, man.

But Baker has proven himself. He’s a fun, wacky, and talented QB. He went through some tough stuff in Cleveland that he didn’t deserve.

I hope we sign him and build a solid team around him.

LOL…..oh my. The level of delusion

Watching the Pro Bowl skills and game you could see how much everyone loves Baker. He has the genuine moxie. He was a good fit after Brady.

  9. Hodad Says:

There is no doubt Baker is a good dude. The players love him, and so do most of the fans. He’ll be the the Bucs starting QB next season, and beyond. That is unless he can make ridiculous money somewhere else. I don’t see that happening. So love him, or not, it’s time to root for him if you’re a true Buc fan, because he’s our starting QB. Him, and Trask are on the same team, it’s OK to like them both.

  12. The Truth be Told Says:

I think it’s funny every time it’s mentioned that he may go somewhere else. It’s called the franchise tag. He is not going anywhere.

  13. Ugotrobbed Says:

I really don’t think KT can be judged either way…he’s never really gotten his chance on the field. Seams like commentors here either hate or love him (for no good reason), which is really unfair.

  14. St.louis Bucs Fan Says:

I think I’d Franchise Evans (to work out a long term deal) and sign Mayfield. Might be better for the cap if we do it that way. You gotta have that talk with Evans first though! And lock up Winfield Jr ASAP!!!!!

  15. White Tiger Says:

So, even if we were inclined to Franchise Tag (average $33m? per year) a QB…why wouldn’t we just build that in to a multi-year deal?

Franchise tag Antoine Winfield…or someone else…they’re WAY more affordable and it buys us some time.

    Oh, yeah…sign Mike Evans….

  16. Jeremy Goins Says:

It boggles my mind how this organization can make decisions like this without any guidance from any of us. Look at the excellent advice consistently coming from Dave Pear and Dave( real joys those two) BEEEJ seems to know a lot too. Oh wait I just figured it out

  17. BucaneroJim Says:

“Him, and Trask are on the same team, it’s OK to like them both.”… agreed.

Oh, yeah… there is nothing wrong with having three good QBs on the team – I sure as sh!t, hope we do in 2024. We have backup QBs for a reason. If Baker is back and goes down hurt, do we want Trask to suck? Wolford to suck? Give it a break.

  18. Stanimal66 Says:

I love Baker Mayfield. He was supposed to be an adequate quarterback and surpassed his expectations tenfold! Quit hating on Shake and Baker, he’s a stud quarterback!
