Baker Mayfield Says It’s Time For His Agent To Negotiate

February 7th, 2024

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield is making the rounds as a paid auto parts spokesman today and he made a stop at The Rich Eisen Show.

Mayfield had a few interesting nuggets.

First, he’s going on a Bahamas vacation soon with his wife, Tristan Wirfs and his girlfriend, and what sounded like a couple of other Bucs. Joe knows Mayfield promised his offensive line a getaway after the season.

Mayfield also was firm that the first step to his return to the Bucs (he’s a pending free agent) was the hiring of offensive coordinator Liam Coen. Now it’s time for his agent to “negotiate,” Mayfield said.

No hesitation from Mayfield when he said he loves living in Tampa after knowing little about the area before he arrived here.

As for departed playcaller Dave Canales, Mayfield reiterated that Canales is the most positive guy he’s ever been around and that the Canales style was good for Mayfield, who said he trends negative.

    Go Bucs

  2. Boss Says:

no more than 25 mill a year for 3 years.

If they sign him and mike long term without saving cash for their replacements this team will be hamstringed for the foreseeable future.

It’s a bet anyone would take when getting Brady….but for a guy with one good year (and a LOT of dropped ints) and another on the bad side of 30……

well I’ll accept your apologies eve with your new screen names.]. Go Bucs!

  3. Tye Says:

Baker did say, “at this point in my career, I want to WIN!”

That may be a nugget or code that IF he gets approached by a winning team,
    HE GONE!

  4. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I agree Boss. I suspect he’ll get more. But I hope he has the TB12 savvy to realize that a lower price for the QB allows the team to sign other players and you win more games and possibly Super Bowls. Break the bank and you hamper the team overall. Brady got that more than anyone.

  5. BakerFan Says:

Money talks. All the BS before this is just BS. To you tards who say team friendly deal, that was this year having to live under the Brady contract. Money will be thrown around and he will get other offers

  6. ocala Says:

I highly doubt 25 will be enough

  7. WyomingJoe Says:

Boss: $25M/year for 3 years? Get real! They couldn’t hire Mason Rudolph for that salary.

Btw, Baker had three really good years, so do your homework so you don’t sound so foolish.

He’ll sign for $35M/year for 3-4 years plus incentives.

  8. Popcorn Mike Says:

Tye, I think all the winning teams half a franchise QB plus does Mayfield fit their system. After the hiring of Coen, I really think it’s how much is Mayfield worth after a decent or great year. Also, don’t think the Bucs just picked Coen, I think it was because of his connection to Mayfield and pretty much same offense Mayfield excelled in

  9. WyomingJoe Says:

Also… here are a bunch of articles naming QB’s like Mahomes who might have had 15-17 INT’s dropped this season. Baker ain’t the only one!

  10. Allen Lofton Says:

If the franchise tag is $37 million, then a 3-to-4-year contract will be aligned in that price range.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

I’ll be surprised if he hasn’t signed his new deal before February 19th.

  12. Tye Says:

    Popcorn Mike,

Almost all the winning teams half a franchise QB… The one that concerns me is the Falcons…. They are basically a qb away from being a solid team… Arthur Blank seems desperate to pay whatever to get a proven qb… Their OC is from the Rams so Baker fits that system, basically the same as he ran this year…

The Falcons are a young team with a talented back, Tight Ends and speedy receivers… BONUS for Baker: Their HC will likely be around 2-3 years..

  13. Bojim Says:

JL will get him signed. I think maybe 30+ at least. Hope we’re negotiating with Mike’s agent too. Then tag Winfield if you have to.

  14. Mike C Says:

    #whohurtboss

  15. White Tiger Says:

In interview, Ballerz seemed to indicate that he values the Buccaneer organization, the trust, the freedom, his closeness to Tristan Wirffs…all say he’ll hedge towards a Tampa-friendly deal…as long as it’s close to market.

Signing Ballerz will require more than $25 mil, as @Alan Lofton points out above – you can get more cap benefit with a multi-year deal – but you have to be competitive with what the Falcons, Steelers, Broncos, are going to offer. Competition sets the market – not the TraskForce disguising themselves as cap gurus.

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

    PAY DA MAN!!!!!

  17. Groovin' Buc Says:

How many teams have been burned by overpaying a player who had good stats in a contract year? That’s basically what Baker has done. Anything more than $25mil w/ incentives, $40 mil guaranteed is too much.

  18. Chief Says:

    4 years, $150 million. $100 Million guaranteed.

  19. ReturnGrudenToRing Says:

Those of us who were around during the Culverhouse years know what happens when you dont pay somebody…they go off and win Superbowls for other teams. Some of the so-called fans on this site will never be happy with Baker and thrive in misery. We have a QB that in the right situation has proven his worth. Lets not watch him go to another team and win someone else a superbowl.

  20. Chad Says:

30 mil per year for 3 years with incentives, that puts him making less than qbs that he’s better than, Daniel jones derrick carr, Ryan tannehil. That’s a good fair deal, leaves money for mike and you franchise awj

  21. X-Browns fan Says:

4 years 160 million 100 million guarantee. With the proper structure that’s a 3-year commitment to Baker for roughly 33 million in a tax-free state and equivalent to other QBs who Baker has outperformed. Gives the Bucs The ability to spread money out over time, restructure or move on in year four.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, All this discussion about a position that was solid, when the run game and defense were at the bottom of the league is not productive. Baker went to the playoffs despite that. Pay the man.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

All these basement dwelling GMs are hilarious. Greenberg, Spytek and Licht surely need your input as to the value of a QB like Mayfield, who has the love and respect of his team, coaches and former coaches.

Please hurry and apply to One Buc Place. Quickly. Before it’s too late and Mayfield is signed by one of the best GMs in the league for more than your pea brains believe he’s worth.

  24. PNW Buc Says:

Agree with above note… Baker will be signed very soon.
Once the official 2024 cap known , GM Jason will be signing the Bucs he wants to keep. Baker will play ball with Jason to ensure Big Mike will be around.
    Go Bucs

  25. stpetebucfan Says:

    “Money talks.”

Obviously it screams to many of you!!! What is the difference in Baker’s life if he signs a 3 year 25 million per deal or 35 per deal. Yep I get that’s 105 million versus 75 million. So freaking what!!! What noticeable changes would occur in his lifestyle. Well if that 35 is in Charlotte he’s going to have to deal with Tepper and LIVING in freaking Charlotte. How would you like to live in Pittburgh?

The money is nothing more than respect and bragging rights. Somebody please point out what appreciable difference it would make in his lifestyle? POWER?

Does Tom Brady look very happy to you. How about his family? Giselle did an interview from a new locale in the Carribean..lots of meditation..growing her own food…holistic living…she at least “looks” happy.

Bundchen actually has a much higher net worth than Brady, whose net worth is around $250 million. While Gisele was earning $500 million in salary and endorsements between 2000 and 2020, Brady earned $330 million. Combined, the two are worth $650 million.

ALL of that money for what?

  26. jehzsa Says:

Somebody tell them that it’s not advisable to travel to the Bahamas.

  27. ExBrowns fan Says:

Hey, I’m from Pittsburgh 😂…. And no, I don’t want to live here either. Stay in Tampa Baker.

  28. Defense Rules Says:

I see at least 3 teams who need a QB AND have more salary CAP space than we do:

    1 – Commanders: $83.5 mil CAP space.
    2 – Titans: $73.9 mil
    3 – Patriots: $69.9 mil

I could more easily though see the Falcons make a play for Baker. They’ve got a solid supporting cast IMO, and are a QB shy of making a good run to win the NFC South. Baker would be that missing piece.

The big question now is … How far CAN the Bucs go to entice Baker to stay here? Everyone’s looking at 2024’s salary CAP situation, but JL has to keep a VERY close eye on 2025 & beyond. It’s a true juggling act because of kicking the can down the street so much in 2021 & 2022, and then again in 2023.

  29. BUCman Says:

Those who think there is a chance Baker is going to the Falcon’s are clueless. First of all the Bucs would use the franchise tag before that happened. But please read the tea leaves before you comment. They asked his opinion on all the OC interviewee’s, he and the team gush about staying together long term, he is still paling around with other Buc players. The only formality is getting the contract done. Neither side is playing hard to get. It is 💯 percent going to get done.

  30. White Tiger Says:

    This is good news!

  31. Kidfloflo Says:

After seeing Baker greet Coen at one buc place the other day it tells me he’s staying! Hell he even had a say in hiring him and got his blessing….all good things

  32. TF Says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a 3 year guaranteed 30-31 with some very attainable performance incentives or maybe even a 4th year option. Bake probably values having a set stable home after team hopping so much. That will also help free some loot for Mike.

  33. BIRDIE Says:

    150 for 5 years

  34. 727BUC Says:

Football is a team game. The ultimate team game. Intangibles actually matter in this type of setting. Baker Mayfield is the epitome of a leader in every facet. Team loves him and so do I!!!! Pay the man because he is THE SPIRIT OF THE BUCCANEERS….. and only been here a year. Oh and by the way… he also is a top 10 QB. Only 32 start. Stop whining about paying a guy who actually deserves it. 35 mil/yr lock it up! Go bucs!!

  35. Oneilbuc Says:

Wyoming. You have lost your mind over Baker Mayfield lol 🤣🤣 to compare him to Mahomes who playing this Sunday ? I think it’s the Chiefs and what’s they’re quarterback name oh ok !! Lol 🤣🤣 I can promise you one thing in that last drive Mahomes would have drove down the field especially with 2 minutes left. I think at that time when Baker threw that pick no one was surprised!! And I’m sure the odds of Mahomes scoring is waay higher than Baker Mayfield in that situation.

  36. Let ‘em bake Says:

DR… don’t think Titans believe in Levis ? I think they’ll roll with him this year. He’s got that fire like King mayfield …and showed some upside against the dolphins in that nice comeback win.

  37. BakerFan Says:

    Oneilbuc Says:
I think at that time when Baker threw that pick no one was surprised!!

How many Pick 6’s has Baker Mayfield thrown in his career? 0
How many Pick 6’s has Patrick Mahomes thrown in his career? 4

Jack Jones LV Raider quote – “Mahomes is the magician. You stop the magician, you stop the act.

That next game he Picked 6 Mahomes.

I watch Mahomes every week, he drives me crazy with what he gets away with. Believe me it will not last if you put the pressure on him like the Raiders did that game, he will put the ball into 49ers hands with his goofy sh!t. I have been a chiefs fan for years so I am not hating on the chiefs.

  38. Proudbucsfan Says:

I really like Baker Mayfield and hope he resigns here for a good contract he proved to many people he could win. I’d like him to do it for years to come, Be the next Drew Breeze. However I’d like the baker ball swallowers that aren’t Bucs fans to go away. This is a Buccaneer fan site not just for Baker Mayfield, go start your own blog dedicated for Baker Mayfield fans

  39. Donald G Says:

I hope we keep Baker Evans David and Winfield(He is better than his dad and dad was one hell of a hitter) We need smart contract negos And I believe we have the smarts to pull it off. BUT if baker wants tooooo much Trask gave him a run for his money in the preseason. If this is the case we will need to beef the OL as Trask cant scramble as well GO BUCS

  40. Let ‘em bake Says:

AP awards in Vegas. Baker in Vegas. Comeback player of year ? Let’s go! One more ticket to cash!

  41. MadMax Says:

35/yr 3 years plus incentives….we need some room Baker….lots to sign and only so much to go around….I was the first promoting for us to go after you on here, just like I did with Brady….we can do this.

  42. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Donald g says man that was a dumb statement Trask is a distant 2nd string talking point he was never really in the running every guy on this team was all about baker from day 1 Trask never had a legit shot at qb1

  43. Dave Pear Says:

Oneilbuc knows quarterbacks. It’s why Jason Licht is calling him constantly for QBs personnel input. Oneilbuc loved Jameis, hated the idea of Brady and hated it even worse when the Bucs won, wants Trask and hates Baker.

Jason asks for Oneilbuc’s input and does the exact opposite.

Keep that gift cooking Oneibuc. No one can be wrong as much without having a gift.

  44. BAKERnoFaker Says:

Baker winning the QB Accuracy competition AND MVP at the Pro Bowl is the cherry on top lol. I bet Bucs were like FCK there went another 5m a year…Ive never seen a comeback with this much momentum before, it’s WILD…but then again this dude stepped off a plane and won a prime time game 2 days later with a NEW team…

Btw for the record stop talking about dropped it’s if your not gonna talk about dropped touchdowns…The actual reason the Bucs lost their last game wasn’t dropped INt, it was dropped passes by the bucs offense period it was TERRIBLE.

  45. Bamboo Says:

Watch out for Pittsburgh they have cap space and money + 20th draft pick won’t get much at QB. Raiders at 13, but Baker could instantly make both serious contenders

  46. Wild Bill Says:

It’s a team game. Sometimes Baker looked great. Sometimes he did not. Bucs would be foolish to overpay Baker. Somewhere near the average of the top eight or so playoff teams qbs would be fair compensation. It takes strong players across the board to make a top quality team. Use the rest of the cash to upgrade other needs. That long loosing streak mid season was a tell. The team limped into the playoffs with a lousy win/loss record. This team needs to upgrade a number of positions . Baker had his share of lousy games. Overpaying him would be a mistake. The Bucs had trouble scoring points all season. They need more juice on offense especially in the run game. I like Baker and his moxie, but he had plenty of mediocre games last season.

  47. vadertime Says:

Well, I’m glad that Baker likes Tampa. The Tampa Bay area is near and dear to my heart since I first moved there 28 years ago. Thankfully, I only live 100 miles South of there and my daughter graduated a year ago from USF. He deserves his Bahamas vacation with his fellow Bucs and he deserves a decent contract when he comes back. Bowles still needs to go. Go Bucs.
