This Game Was Made For Throwing

January 20th, 2024

Big game coming?

Leave it to a man who knows both football and numbers to recognize a major crack in a playoff team’s armor.

Handicapper turned stathead Warren Sharp has noticed an area where the Bucs, if they are so inclined, are well positioned to exploit.

In the last four Lions games, per Sharp, Detroit’s defense has been gouged badly by long touchdown passes. To be specific, all six of these touchdown passes have been 26-or-more yards.

As Sharp points out, no team has coughed up more catches from wide receivers of 20-yards or more than the Lions.

Joe then looks at the Bucs’ roster of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Trey Palmer and suddenly hot David Moore.

This could be fun!

    Why am I sensing a shoot-out?

  2. JimBobBuc Says:

In the earlier Bucs-Lions game, we had guys open on deep throws but Baker overthrew them. On the flip side, Goff hit guys on two long passes for TD’s. That’s the difference in that game, long throw success.

Our defense was also hurt by Lion’s screens, both to backs and WR’s. Offensively, the Bucs have done well with RB screens, I hope we do more…

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

It all comes down to Baker getting the ball out. I am hoping for 400 yards and 4 TD’s. The lions secondary is THAT bad.

  4. BucsFan Says:

    Just chuck it Bakey

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

Hard to believe that the Lions secondary is allowing more passing yards than ours.

  6. HC Grover Says:

2 more games. Possible home game v Packers next week. The cash is on the field waiting.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

@JimBob: those long tuddies were against a guy who most likely only see ST play, Ryan Neal. He is god awful terrible.

I expect to see McCollum at FS for much of this game.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

Much of this game depends on the OL keeping Mayfield clean.

  9. Dom Says:

Dave Canales needs to have the same aggressive pass first game plan he had last week for us to have any shot. If he waits until we are down a couple possessions it will be too late. The strength of the team is the WR’s, and the O-Line’s strength is in pass protection. Should have been a pass first team all season. Hopefully Dave figured that out.

    Throw deep often.

I totally agree, if given time Baker will slice them up

    Please no more drops!

Doesn’t really matter about the lions secondary. You see Mayfield is like a box of chocolates you never know what your gonna get.

If I have to read that Forrest Gump analogy one more time I’m going to barf. It’s been way overused.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

@suffering: It could be worse. It could be Bubba Blue’s rendition of how many ways Baker can beat you like in his shrimp prep.

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Add Otton and White to that receiver list. I still don’t fully trust Canales.

  17. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

It better not be a shootout with our defensive master mind of a head coach.

  18. Boss Says:

Start mike off with slants and curls routes before you throw him the 50 yard bomb that hits him in the numbers.

  19. Let ‘em bake Says:

Get Goff off his spot. Pressure. klancey must do his best sapp impression.

    @Dom – you are 100% right on.

Let’s look at the games where “Good Baker” showed up – Green Bay, Jacksonville, 1st Saints game, Houston, Bears, 2nd Eagles – ALL of those were games where we started out passing on 1st and 2nd down, running play action, etc.

The games where “bad Baker” showed up – we were stuck in “run up the gut on 1st and 2nd down, play 3rd and Long”. At one point in the season, TB was #1 in 3rd and Long conversions… because we had so many opportunities. And you all complain that Baker would have a great 4th quarter in those games… why? Cause we stopped running on 1st/2nd down in the 4th quarter.

The only really bad games I thought Baker had this year were 2nd Carolina where he was injured, Niners game, 1st Falcons, and 2nd Saints. All of those were “run 1st/2nd down” games. In most of those games, we were behind the chains all game, our pass blocking stunk, and Baker didn’t play great.

Don’t forget OTTON joe. He only dropped 1 pass other than that he caught most everything thrown his way.

  22. garro Says:

I would not rely on a stat geek to game plan for these guys. They are a playoff team for a reason…They won games. Vulnerable in the secondary…maybe. Can we pass block long enough to get the ball to our guys…maybe.

    Go Bucs!

    David Moore is hungry!

    David Moore needs another contract.

David Moore must flash to feed his family.

Palmer has a 4 year deal.

David Moore is a beast. He should also return kick offs. Leave Devin as a punt returner.

David Moore is playing with rage.

    We need that.
