The Jared Goff Domination Of Todd Bowles Continues

January 21st, 2024

Jared Goff wins off the field, and when facing a Todd Bowles defense.

Joe knows a sect of unreasonable Bucs fans think Bucs coach Todd Bowles is a terrible defensive coordinator. Well, he has way too many pelts on the wall for Joe to even entertain the idea that he sucks.

But like many if not most good coaches, he does have a soft underbelly. And in Bowles’ case, that thorn in his side is Detroit quarterback Jared Goff.

The former Rams QB has played against Bowles four times. He’s 4-0, and today in a Lions 31-23 win, Goff had his “worst” game against Bowles and the Bucs. Goff threw for 287 yards completing 30 of 43 passes with two touchdowns.

He and his right arm were the difference in the game, ending the Bucs’ season.

In the past three games Goff has faced Bowles and the Bucs (including when Bowles was the defensive coordinator and Bucco Bruce Arians was head coach), Goff has averaged 415 yards passing while completing 38 passes per game. Again, those are *average* numbers.

The Bucs did a nice job stopping the Lions and containing Goff in the first half today. In the second half, it seemed as if Bowles was not adjusting and Goff just lit up the interior of the defense.

Of course, the Bucs rarely breathed on Goff.

So yeah, Goff won this game. He usually does when facing Bowles.

Where were the exotic blitz packages ?

  2. FrontFour Says:

Such a stupid article. Head on down the road and write for another team.

  3. Tye Says:

If you are even just a decent team, you will usually win facing Bowels…

  4. Caleb Says:

3-1 not 4-0. Lost the one to Winston in LA

When you sit back in a soft zone and don’t get pressure, this is the outcome.

What happened to the aggressive man defense the Bucs had played in the 2nd half of the season that got them here?

Bowles, like an idiot, thought he’d trick everyone by switching back to what got them to 4-7.

Truly stupid playing calling … I think. Of course I was watching the TV angle, maybe it’s not as bad as it seemed, but seemingly nearly every time they gave up a big play, they were in zone.

If anyone has the numbers on that, or sees it, I’d love to know what the breakdown of zone/man was the game.

I just can’t believe you turned the defense around, you weren’t giving up points, you were getting pressure, and then, here, you decide to change it up. Mind bogglingly stupid if true.

I think Bowles did a great job for yhe playoffs. I like our direction heading into next year.

Can’t believe that Bowles went with this defense.. nothing more to say you know the rest.

  8. NE Fan Says:

Team effort and the better team won, that’s all. Better finish than expected. Once Bowles went for two he sent the message the game was over. I was actually pulling for you going into the 3rd qtr. No shame better team won.

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jared Goff is officially a part owner of the Bucs.

He might be the best passer in the NFL with a clean pocket and the Bucs are NEVER able to get to him

  10. Bosch Says:

Bowles is a poor DC PERIOD. He gives up passing yards in chunks. He is willing to sacrifice pass defense in favor of run defense. DUH! Which hurts you worse?

He is actually a better head coach than he is DC. I suppose you have to keep him as HC because the Bucs exceeded expectations. You have to be proud of this Bucs team because you know they fight hard out of love for one another. Frankly, I think that has much more to do with Mayfield than it does Bowles. But if the Glazers choose to credit Bowels for the team comrade, he still desperately needs to be relieved of his DC responsibilities.

    Joe

Your knack for nit-picking on particular details is unmatched. Head Coach Todd Bowles led a defense that kept a tight rein on the Goff for the better part of three quarters. So, to call it a show of “dominance” might be stretching it a bit, or it might just be a sign of your less-than-favorable opinion of the guy.

    GO BUCS!

What’s so great about Goof/Goff? Saw him get sacked. 49ers will probably kill him.

No time for next year it’s time for rebuild START TODAY

  15. BucU Says:

    Embarrassing 4th quarter. Straight up.

  16. Jeremy Goins Says:

I’m still proud of the BUCS. We were supposed to tank according to the experts. 24 teams would have been happy to be in our situation. We didn’t deserve to win that 1. It appears our HC/DC doesn’t adjust to the game and that won’t win a Superbowl. Go Bucs

  17. Les Says:

the Book on bowles is he never adjusts after the half .plain as day against the lions 😡

  18. NEOhiobuc Says:

Left the middle zone open all game for Goff to exploit. Went downhill after Dean injury. This team needs a few more pieces to make a serious playoff push.
