QB Hits Tell A Story

January 8th, 2024

Are the Bucs a Super Bowl team? (Stop giggling.)

Joe can’t say that because of the Bucs’ pass rush.

You need a potent rush to go deep in the postseason.

Tampa Bay just hasn’t shown enough firepower off the edge. Rookie YaYa Diaby has surged and looks the part over the second half of the season, Diaby has 3 1/2 sacks in 7 games since becoming a starter. That’s great for a rookie but hardly a stunning total.

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett (4 1/2 sacks) looks washed out but certainly better than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (5 sacks) and Anthony Nelson (3 sacks).

Quarterback hits were down for the Bucs this season, including from the combination of blitzing linebackers Devin White and Lavonte David, who blitzed a lot more in 2023. They combined for 18 QB hits last year and 14 this season.

In 2022, White led the Bucs with 16 quarterback hits, followed by Tryon-Shoyinka (14) and Vita Vea (13). None of those guys broke 9 QB hits this season. Diaby led the Bucs with 12 and rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey was second with 10.

Once upon a time in 2020, Will Gholston, Jason Pierre-Paul, Ndamukong Suh, White and Shaq combined for a whopping 85 quarterback hits in the regular season.

Are teams picking up on Bowles blitzing scheme? The more you blitz the more film there is.

  3. ElioT Says:

    Yaya has 7.5 sacks.

I don’t think any of us see the Bucs as a Super Bowl contender this year however, if they can play like they played against Jacksonville Mon and beat the Eagles, that would surely give us hope for next year. Not a Mayfield fan as of this year but I wouldn’t mind seeing him coming back next year with the same offensive staff. It’s just the inconsistency with him, and also with Bowles and his defense

  6. orlbucfan Says:

N-O, nope. Bucs are not Stupid Bowl ready. They need a few more player pieces. I trust Licht. He’ll find them with his scouts and the coaches.

Shannon sharpe said jamies should get cut for what he did yesterday 🤣

  8. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 is on a roll. He will get us there. Super Bucs. Eagles Cowboys and Niners will fall to Plan 9 from Outer Space. Bowles Super Secret Weapon.

  9. Joe Says:

    Yaya has 7.5 sacks.

Yes, but 3.5 in last seven games since he was (finally) named starter. That’s not a knock, just the cold hard truth.

  10. unbelievable Says:

Yup, been saying it all year. Pass rush is non-existent on 90+% of plays.

Just looked at results of Bucs/Eagles earlier game this year….
    25 to 11 beatdown!!

    Bucs allowed 472 total yards
Bucs offense produced a WHOPPING 174 total yards with a HEALTHY Baker Mayfield.

    Mayfield was 15/25 for 146 yards w 1 TD & 1 INT

****Jesus, that’s not gonna cut it!!! ****

Offense better be able to move the freaken ball if we have a chance here!!!
    NO EXCUSES..

Hopefully Bowles is now done with that stupid soft zone defense as well..

  12. Beeej Says:

You have to be able to control the line of scrimmage, we lost both sides of that against the Eagles

  13. BucU Says:

Any noise made if any in the playoffs will be gravy for this team this year.

  14. Jeff Says:

The Eagles stud OL will look like the JV team scrimmaging with high school seniors. This will end in a blowout.

  15. ModHairKen Says:

Jameis should get cut for yesterday. Any player who defies a coach in that manner should be cut. How can Allen have any authority left unless he cuts him?

  16. Woodenman Says:

Jeff you been wrong all season keep it up!

  17. Jeffs grandpa Says:

He’s never been a bright boy

  18. Bucfan1988 Says:

Jameis won’t be with the Saints next year.
I wonder if he’ll even have a career anymore.

Maybe he’ll go play in the new UFL, haha

  19. DFW Buc Says:

Jamissed will not be missed. What a stupid way to end a career. Saints just said the locker room is a dumpster fire.

  20. Proudbucsfan Says:

So Joe if YAYA started all 17 games this year he would have finished with 8.5 sacks which is pretty darn good for a rookie, he will get stronger being in an NFL weight room and get double digits next season. The only if is who is going to be across from him ?

  21. Bucs96NYC Says:

Soft coverage allows for quick throws & easy decision making. You go back to press sometimes & things will change.
