Pass Rush Was Pathetic

January 21st, 2024

Mostly MIA today.

One reason Lions quarterback Jared Goff sliced up the Bucs’ secondary today was that he pretty much could order his fiance a glass of chardonnay before he was breathed on.

Simply put, the Bucs didn’t have a pass rush. Outside of Calijah Kancey getting a sack, that was about it from the Bucs’ front line and outside linebackers. The pressure was scant.

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka was useless as usual. Though he played hurt, 2023 leading sacker YaYa Diaby didn’t get near Goff (Diaby’s sack numbers have gone down since he’s been named starter and that tells Joe there is a book out on him). And Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett was simply rumored to be on the field.

Once again, the Bucs are going to be hunting for a pass rusher this offseason. Or at least they better be.

Teams don’t go far in the playoffs when elite quarterbacks have so much time to throw they can trim their fingernails before releasing the ball.

The Bucs did have five quarterback hits on Goff, three by down linemen, two by others.

If you play soft defense in the middle of the field and cannot get consistent heat on a quarterback, a defense is begging for trouble. That’s just what happened to the Bucs in the second half.

But this was a Glorious Loss.

  2. Jack Clark Says:

lol facts Joe, adding good pass rushers and interior offensive linemen who can run block to our team needs to be our top priority next year

  3. gotbbucs Says:

    Shaq is done

  4. David Says:

SHAQ is going to be gone because of his salary.
White is going to be gone because he has never lived up to his Super Bowl run. They need another edge rusher to pair with Yaya and KANCEY. They are very close to being a top notch D.
Imagine what Todd Bowles can do if he actually had a four-man pass rush that can get pressure consistently

  5. Casual Observer Says:

Lions had a pass rush. We didn’t. Main story.

  6. SlyPirate Says:

Kancey was a problem. Unfortunately he didn’t have any help.

  7. Ricki Says:

Problem is Bowles, he needs to go. We got lucky to get this far somehow. Bowles is incompetent.

  8. LVMYBUCS Says:

Please get rid of Bowles he will never get us back to the Bowl

  9. Since76 Says:

You won’t win when you throw 2 ints. The story of the game Goff>Mayfield. Very much………

  10. firethecannons Says:

Agreed there was not a pass rush, move on from Shaq; there was NO pass rush this game, Goff had all day long to carve us up.

  11. firethecannons Says:

typing this just heard Romo say “Donovan Smith with the hold” lol that was a problem glad we rid ourselves of.!

  12. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Need a hard look at over paid players and trim the fat. Draft/FA for pass rush/defense.

  13. Destinjohnny Says:

Vea is 40 points over weight and we dont have a legit pass rusher

  14. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Achilles heel for this defense. YaYa clearly is limited when it comes to moves and I don’t see him really bending around the edge much. He plays high and uses his size and strength but I do think he’s got a solid foundation to build on. Tryon, as athletic as he is just doesn’t have it and will continue to be a rotational piece if he stays. Shaq as good as a guy he is and he still plays the run well he doesn’t have the same get off and bend as he used to.

  15. Ryan Says:

I don’t know if the Bucs can trust Licht to draft a good DE in the first round. I don’t know the FA class but that may be the route to go this offseason. Can’t expect anything out of JTS and Shaq

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

Shaq and Joe Tryon must go. Shaq lost a complete step with that injury and Joe tryon? Well he was MIA all season long. You are not going anywhere in the league unless you got a pass rush. Its been our problem all year long. Actually, surprised we won as many games as we did. GET A PASS RUSH NEXT SEASON

  17. orlbucfan Says:

I knew this team needed another season to get up to snuff. The Defense looked porous as h3ll. That will be radically different next fall. Hope I live long enough to see it.

  18. TheBucsAnthem Says:

We May see a major dumpster fire of letting people go in the coming months for rebuilding.

ME13 will command a very high contract $$$$$ …..which the Bucs don’t have.

LVD should retire a Buc at all costs…..that man deserves it

Dump DW45, Vita, and Shaq Barrett…..all 3 were nonfactors in the game today.

Baker will command atleast 30 Mil a year……even though he’s earned it, I would think twice about resigning him……seriously

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

Shaq has been MIA all year….not only a non factor in pass rush but being noticeably pushed around on run defense too.

But at the end of the day, seasons over and nearly every great player has their “washed year”.

I appreciate what Shaq has done for the Bucs from 2019-2021. He was a dominant force and helped bring a superbowl. But its time to move on..

Also, credit to Shaq for not having an attitude problem unlike Devin White who went straight to social media to argue with fans 15 minutes after the game.

  20. Cobraboy Says:

Gotta give the Lion OL props. They were good going into this game and proved why.

The exact opposite of the Buc interior OL.

  21. Cobraboy Says:

There is a reason the Lions finished 12-5.

    That is a solid team.

    Bucs need better players.

  22. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Sadly this team overachieved this year. We have some players, but this was a team held together with duck tape because e we didn’t have the money to fix things right. I’m proud of what they accomplished. I don’t love Bowles, but he has shown to be a tough team to beat twice. I think Canales grew in the oc position through the year and would like to see what year two in the system would look like for all the players. I’m not sure how much of the dead money is back for next year but we need some pieces.

  23. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Sadly this team overachieved this year. ”

    Sadly????

Wow ill never understand the love affair this fan base has with your precious high draft picks. Sorry ill take 2 very exciting playoff games over going 4-12 with a precious top 5 draft pick every single time.

  24. Weebs10 Says:

Amen Tbbucs3. I don’t get whiners on this site at all.

  25. Bojim Says:

Still a lot of Mayfield haters. Sorry he’ll be back. No, not sorry, Baker will be back!!

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

    Our needs havent changed.
We have to address the team needs in level of priority,
Either thru free agency, the draft, or both.
    Pass rusher
    Guard
    Center
    Safety
    Cornerback.

But we have the most important offensive positions secured.
    QB,LT, WR, and RB.
I also think Shaq Barrett will be better next season. Achilles Tendons take 2 years to fully recover.

But We’ll have money and draft picks.
We should be NFC south Champs next year- and then some!

  27. Cobraboy Says:

I read somewhere that Barrett would cost more on the cap to cut than keep. Fingers crossed that Achilles recovery is better in ’24.

  28. Les Says:

Why did we play zone again after the eagles game ? Bowles is not it !

  29. Jeff Says:

Bucs simply don’t have the horses up front. Shaq, JPP, Devin White, all got to go. The focus of the draft needs to be pass rusher. The focus of free agency needs to be pass rusher. Pass rush fixes everything.

  30. firethecannons Says:

Jeff says: The focus of the draft needs to be pass rusher. The focus of free agency needs to be pass rusher. Pass rush fixes everything. ***** I agree with this, and we need O-line fixed–center and guard and bulk Mauch up. The lines on both sides of the ball need to be fixed.! We need an Aidan Hutchinson! We need to get YaYa educated up with some variety of pass rush moves. He had a goof first year. In fact the 2023 draft: Kancy–good, Mauch–good enough, YaYa–good, Trey Palmer–good, Payne Durham –ok for 1st yr-did not play much as Otton really came on. Izien–ok Sirvocea denis–needs to get well the other 2 draft picks not mentioned can find JTS, DW45 and Ryan Neal and get the hell outta dodge.

  31. adam from ny Says:

ends/edges did next to nothing…and goff was just chilling in the pocket…

the other defensive units really held it down hardcore, considering the lack of edge / DE type pressure all day…

i heard baker has “pocket envy” on the bucs sidelines while watching goff…

baker couldn’t really get set back there most of the time…

also his line realistically should read 3 tds and 1 int…

me13 should have one int on him for what joe or someone referred to as “playing volleyball in the center of the field”

  32. adam from ny Says:

it was a heck of a game thru 3 quarters…

and i started to wonder :can we really pull this off?”

but detroit slowly and dominantly pulled away in the final quarter…

bottom line is they are a dam good football team, and have been good almost the entirety of last season as well…

even though it looks like they turned it around in the second half of last season, they were good all year – i was watching them closely early on, as they kept losing really tough battles as they were trying to turn the corner…

i remember telling a friend they’re like the best 1-5 or 1-6 football team to ever take the field, at that point…

they were getting good, and battling like dogs vs good teams, but the media was not fully aware, or wasn’t talking about it…then people began to realize how good they were becoming as the wins started to compound…

i remember kind of feeling bad for dan campbell, because he was working so hard, was so committed, and wasn’t getting the final results early on…he was so authentic and dedicated as he marched the sidelines…

i have nothing against detroit – in fact let them win the whole dam thing…the heck with sf, kc, and balt…

    i hope it’s a detroit – baltimore superbowl…

yet the sexy pick is kc vs sf

  33. D-Rok Says:

I stated all week long our D-line was the key to this game, and it was. I’m sure some will claim that after Dean went out, our D fell to pieces, and it did.

Offense played a mostly good game, and were competitive. The defense folded in the second half, yet again.

Good game, OK loss, but it could have been very close at the end. When Bowles decided to go for 2 and it failed, it was over.

    Better than expected season, though.

  34. Bucs Guy Says:

Look for another Shaq in FA (Guy willing to take a chance on himself) ans draft a DE/OLB in the first round.

  35. Scott Says:

Dude is washed up. Time to go.

  36. Hodad Says:

The chances of finding an impact pass rusher picking at #26 is next to zero, it ain’t happening. You find the JTS’s at 26, not the Watts, or Bosa brothers. Do you resign Evans, or use that FA money on a pass rusher? These are the decisions Licht gets paid to make.

  37. optimisticbucfan Says:

Can cut Shaq…ask the best GM why we can’t.

    Shaq ain’t going no where.

We’ve kicked the can down the road too much.

  38. Cobraboy Says:

Why not give props to the Lions OL for excellent pass blocking?

The relative OL’s were the difference in this game as I thought they’d be.

LIons OL > Bucs pass rush, Lions pass rush > Buc’s OL.

    It is really that simple.

    The rest was fairly even.

  39. Wayne perez Says:

We are stuck with Shaq 27 million cap hit if we cut him

  40. Davenport Says:

Before anyone starts tossing out names to cut, have a look at the cap ramifications. Letting some guys go will create huge issues.

  41. BucU Says:

We have many many holes to fill and you can only do so much in one offseason.
So don’t expect us to be soaring to new heights any time soon.

  42. tbc 1 Says:

#1 player to get cut TODAY Ryan Neil

  43. unbelievable Says:

    Yaya was also clearly injured…

But yea, Shaq seems like he’s dunzo, and JTS was never anything to begin with.

Also feels like Vea is no longer the force he used to be.

At minimum, we need 1 stud OLB plus a rotational DT/DE.

Need a strong center on offense too.

  44. RustyRhinos Says:

“But this was a Glorious Loss.”

OH YEAH!!! We have yet another HC GROVER fan post…
Hey HC should we all just head on down to our local Pitty Party Bar & Grill? Drink your fill with the Woe is Me crowd and all that, come home, and be mean and disrespectfully nasty to everyone in the house??

We just had our “playoff season ended in Detroit! Next Up Is to work on our free-agent roster. Pre-draft thoughts and wishes. But you, no you would rather be negative about our exciting improvement from last season. Did it end with another Super Bowl? No, but I can and will be excited about our team going forward. You must be a really fun person to hang out with…
Good luck to those who do!!

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!
