Dave Canales Is The New Panthers Head Coach

January 25th, 2024

Well, that was quick.

Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales has gone from first-time playcaller with Tampa Bay to the head coach of the Stinking Panthers in the NFC South.

What a meteoric rise for 42 year old Canales, who obviously made one hell of an impression on Panthers ownership. Joe wonders what Canales might have said about his Bucs offense struggling mightily against Carolina in Week 18, when Tampa Bay beat the Panthers 9-0?

Regardless, the Bucs now need an offensive coordinator.

Joe suspects the team won’t want to change much of the system that Baker Mayfield thrived in and the one in which Mike Evans had one of his very best seasons. Of course, that assumes either guy will want to stay with the Bucs for the transition to a new playcaller.

Head coach Todd Bowles said this week that he has in-house candidates if Canales moves on. Bowles also is very familiar with other potential playcallers since he just interviewed a dozen one year ago.

Joe is soooo curious to see whether Canales asks Panthers management to trade for Kyle Trask, given how Trask knows the Canales system and is an A-list backup.

Congratulations, Coach!

  2. BucsFan81 Says:

Well damn we got to learn a whole new offense now. I wonder which of our guys will go with him. Maybe Mike Evans? It’s crazy he was only OC for 1 year and then right to head coach.

  3. mike Says:

    Damn! That hurts big!

  4. BucFanDMV Says:

I am happy for Dave because now he doesn’t have to worry about Bowles interfering with what he wants to do on offense. I think this is a good move for Dave, and he has a young quarterback and pretty good defense, so his focus is on getting the offense fixed.

  5. Conner50 Says:

Well at least Tampa knows that he will be running the ball up the gut on first and second

  6. mike Says:

Football is amazing! What happens if the panthers don’t miss an easy fg and fumble in the endzone?

  7. Wombat Says:

and our pets heads are falling off!!!!

  8. Buc15 Says:

    dammmmmit

  9. dbbuc711 Says:

Can’t blame him since it should be a 5 year fully guaranteed contract.
But says a lot about how attractive that opening is.
Unfortunately, he will probably get fired about week 8.

  10. Buccos Says:

They will keep the system that he installed and one of his assistants will be promoted. Good luck coach!

  11. Tye Says:

    Bucs are screwed!
Dave was the one that saved TB job another year…

SUCKS TO BE STUCK WITH BOWLES AT HC!!!

  12. SB~LV Says:

    Green

  13. Luis Says:

    Thad Lewis

  14. Scott Says:

I knew he was as good as gone. Wonder if he takes his man Idzik over there

  15. NcKe Says:

Live in Charlotte, Tepper needs someone he can control. I figured this would happen. Panthers GM Dan Morgan and Canales both come from the Seahawks organization.

  16. SB~LV Says:

    Baker next ?

  17. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Wow! I would not work for Tepper.

  18. BucsFan81 Says:

I am calling it now. If Baker comes back we will get old Baker. Canales wasn’t the best OC but he has a track record for getting the best out of the QB he has worked with see Geno Smith and Baker from this year.

  19. geno711 Says:

    Congrats to Canales.

That I liked about him is though he said that he was committed to running the ball, he also was smart enough to know that you throw the ball against sorry pass defenses like Philadelphia and Detroit.

I think he has that good sense to attack a weakness.

He also did as well as anyone with Baker.

In the end though, he never got a successful running game. I probably put that on Hainsey, Mauch more than him though..

  20. NutterBuccer Says:

Bucs should of done more to keep him. Bowles is a lame duck.

  21. Nicholas Carlson Says:

If the Bucs get Baker and Evans back, and I think they can, this is a plum OC job. Much more attractive than last year.

  22. NcKe Says:

Got to fix lil man ( Young )

  23. T. McGee Says:

That shows how attractive another year with Mayfield is… and would command WAY more money if he thought they’d get to the SB here. So he got everything he could out of the Bucs job… and left.

  24. Jerseybuc Says:

So pissed right now!!! Should have gave em a raise n new title. Tepper going throw him overboard in half a year cuz young sucks then canals going need 10 years to get back out there ask raheem how it hurt his career

  25. BakerFan Says:

Wow…. so Joe thinks a priority for Canales in his new job is to trade for a backup qb that did not play a snap in 2023 season. Is Joe a closet Traskite?

  26. NcKe Says:

Thad Lewis is interviewing with the Raiders. SMH

  27. Caleb Says:

This is the issue with defensive head coaches. Even when they hit on an OC they have to find another one when they get plucked.

  28. Bucsfan1010 Says:

    2 things…

    1. He must not like the way Bowels is wanting to run the offense and wants to use his theories and concepts.

    2. He must know something we don’t about a few of the players and what management/Bowels wants to do in the off-season.

Why would you pass up those weapons on offense for a dumpster fire in Carolina??? Career suicide….

  29. Jerseybuc Says:

T mcgee stupidest take I ever heard. So you would turn down a huge raise and a spot at your own gig. 🙄
    Yea sure man

  30. Marine Buc Says:

    I’m happy for Canales.

Our GM and head coach did a solid job picking the last OC let’s hope they can get another solid OC in here ASAP…

  31. deuceswild78 Says:

was hoping for 1 more year… going to be interesting how this impacts who stays and who leaves

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Congratulations to him and his family.

But he’s dead to me now – so moving on.

    Hire Zach Robinson!!!

  33. Paratrooper Buc Says:

The new Panthers GM is Canales friend. Thats a big reason he left. However, I will not be shocked if both are fired in 2-3 years because Tepper is an ass.

  34. realistic-optimistic Says:

What a meteoric rise for 42 year old Canales

Not so meteoric. He spent 13 seasons on an NFL sideline with a great HC. He’s not the first guy to get a HC job after only 1 OC season. The league has been scooping up guys like him for several years now.

  35. TomBucsFan Says:

    WOW WTH

  36. CTBucs Says:

Good for him, but we all hate the Panthers. Wishing him many years of 3-14 and an annual sweep from our Bucs. Seeeeee ya

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

How do you go from being on the verge of getting fired to an HC as a year 1 play caller?

Looks like Tepper has no clue what he’s doing, Canales was not impressive for much of the year but came along at the end……but I can see how Canales can impress during the interview process and looks like the Panthers fell for it.

I do not see the Panthers turning their dumpster fire around anytime soon

  38. King C Says:

This has nothing to do with Bowles or Mayfield.
When you have a chance to grab a head coach job, you grab it.
Waiting a year for a better spot is risky, just ask Byron Leftwich.

  39. Pickgrin Says:

    Congrats Dave Canales.

I hope you fail miserably in your new HC position with the sh!tty kitties….

So do we get the two extra 3rd round comp picks for losing this “minority” coordinator in 2024 or 2025?

  40. CTBucs Says:

Could we hire Brian Johnson? He worked wonders with Trask at UFla lol

  41. Oddball Says:

Well, can we rehire Dave when Tepper blows a gasket and fires him week 5?

  42. JD12 Says:

Maybe our DC will get hired by another team !!

Offense looked much better in the playoffs. Good for Canales and good for the bucs since we get to play the kitty cats twice a year haha.

Would like to see us go for Kubiak, Robinson or Griese if Thad Lewis goes to LV.

  43. BakerFan Says:

    Bucsfan1010 Says:
Why would you pass up those weapons on offense for a dumpster fire in Carolina??? Career suicide….

    …………………………………………………………………………….
He is 1 of 32 in the world at 42…..the position has no where to go but up. If he fails he can fall back into an OC with another team. It is a good move for him.

  44. Jack Clark Says:

Yes thank god! Now we can get a real OC. Please hire two time super bowl winning OC eric bieneimy and give him full control over our offense!

Funny how NFL owners will make any excuse to move the goal post just so they can hire who they “really” want to be their head coach. First it’s “We want a super bowl winning offensive coordinator”, now it’s “We just want someone with a personality we like”. The NFL is unfair politics just like the rest of the United States of America. Dave Canales as OC is average at best, his offense had the worst running game in the league, was 22nd ranked in total scoring offense, and he barely had winning record 9-8. But those meager qualifications were enough for an NFL owner to hire him as a head coach over more qualified candidates? Something stinks, and I’m not talking about the Panthers!

  45. StormyInFl Says:

Ans here we are stuck with Turd Bowles… the lone bright spot is gonzo.

  46. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

I know he’s not exactly Kyle Shanahan but there’s no way Bowles can hire another OC of his caliber. FK!

  47. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

I know he’s not exactly Kyle Shanahan but there’s no way Bowles can hire another OC with his caliber.

  48. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Could we hire Brian Johnson? He worked wonders with Trask at UFla lol”

    Lets also sign Tim Tebow!

  49. Idiots Says:

Screw congrats. Get the F out.

  50. Tbbucs3 Says:

I hope Thad Lewis becomes the OC….I reallg dint see losing Canales as a major blow. He doesn’t run a complicated offense and could never get Godwin involved.

But would prefer to hire someone in house so Baker doesnt have to learn another playbook again

  51. Buc4evr Says:

Happy for Canales and all the money he is going to make. Hope his contract is fully guaranteed as he won’t last under Tepper. I honestly think that if the Bucs get their heads out of their A**es they can do a lot better than Canales. I may be in the minority, but I think Canales was stuck with what they did in Seattle and as a result was a horrible OC for the Bucs. He never played to the Bucs strengths and let GC14 stagnant. Went to the run too often ,even on bad down and distance, and along with Bowles didn’t make use of the clock correctly. His hire at Carolina could very well be another Peter Principle situation.

  52. Idiots Says:

Division rival and you’re all “congrats” f that.

And F canales. Good luck with young hahaha

  53. Anderson5599 Says:

Bad move on canales is too soon. On the other hand i give him props for doing a good job at the end of the year with the offense. However our offense was still ranked 21st all year Just saying

  54. Popcorn Mike Says:

Well we can look at this as good and bad. Bad part, we just got the team acclimated to a new offense and I am sure others and myself was waiting for the 024 season to see what the Bucs look like after another full preseason. The good, Bowles seems to have made a great choice in choosing Canales and other offensive coaches. I am sure as I said before, Bowles should have someone on staff that should be able to move right in as OC. Just a wait and see situation

  55. Marine Buc Says:

So who should the Bucs hire as our new OC?

    Frank Reich?

The Bucs better get moving on this ASAP or they will be left with fewer options.

  56. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Can’t we give them Bowles instead

  57. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Hire Zach Robinson!!!

  58. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

I voted no confidence on the Bowles poll but now I have even less confidence in him.

  59. Tbbucs3 Says:

Kliff Kingsbury is worth a look too….Baker has familiarity with his air raid offense

  60. HC Grover Says:

No worries. He was not so good. We will do bettah. Carolina is a wasteland. He will not be able to help Brycie Young….worlds worst QB. Now if only they take Bakefield off our hands.

  61. SufferingSince76 Says:

He’s the enemy now. At least twice a year, anyway. I can’t wish him success when his success would be at the Bucs’ expense. Lastly, crap!

Two time super bowl winning OC Eric Bieniemy is available

  63. realistic-optimistic Says:

    @Tbbucs3, LOL

You know Kingsbury ran Baker out of TT. He wants nothing to do with Baker. lol

  64. HC Grover Says:

He is now The Enemy I wish nothing good for that Gold Digger

  65. Im tired but we won the Superbowl! Says:

What horrible news. The first huge domino we needed to fall our way completely fell off the table. Now what? Right when I was getting excited for the Bucs future this crap happens. Oh well hopefully Bowels has a good plan. Go Bucs!

  66. Im tired but we won the Superbowl! Says:

We should definitely go get OC Eric Bieniemy!

  67. MikeW28277 Says:

Go get Ben Johnson. Worked with Hurts in Philly.

  68. Richard Dickson Says:

Some of you with the conspiracy theories on why Canales left when the obvious answer is IT’S ONE OF ONLY 32 NFL HEAD COACHING JOBS. Doesn’t have to be some secret reason he wanted to get out of Tampa.

  69. SlyPirate Says:

    Not worried.

  70. SB~LV Says:

    New offense install coming
    New OC personality coming
    stop

    Tis’ a Bucs fans life

  71. TBteddy Says:

He was a bum good riddance and the panthers will continue to stink for years to come I’m celebrating 🥳.

  72. ElioT Says:

Byron is still out there right? LMAO

Gotta find someone good, hope this doesn’t impact Baker and Mike’s decision making process in FA.

Can’t blame Canales, doesn’t matter where or when, you can’t turn down a HC job.

  73. BucU Says:

What a dumb move by Canales. He’s a first time coordinator this past year and now he abandons the team who gave him his first shot and takes a HC job at a division rival. Who’s QB and offense is a disaster.
I’ll look forward to seeing us embarrass the shyt out of him.
    TRAITOR.

  74. Steven007 Says:

He was growing on me here. But tumors grow too. Let’s get the best fit for this offense now.

  75. Aceofaerospace Says:

Don’t worry he’ll be available again mid season.

  76. OlBoy Says:

Yeah. I think this is happening because tepper needs to be right about Young, not the Panthers needing a new HC. Canales has the track record to match what tepper needs. Throw in the other variables and these pieces fell in to place relatively easy like.

Great opportunity for Canales. And now that he is a division rival, id very much like to see him not be successful.

  77. BuxfaninTX Says:

I’m guessing that Thad Lewis will be the new OC?

IF there’s an in house candidate, where was that person last season when Todd hired Canales?

  78. Tbbucs3 Says:

The problem with Bowles is his success mainly depends on who the OC is…..

And if he hires a good OC they dart for a head coaching job a year later….

Its just not a recipe for long term success

  79. Ricardo Says:

Wonder if that affects Mike and Baker’s decision.

  80. Leopold Stotch Says:

    Bruh

  81. Tbbucs3 Says:

And yeah after reading about Kingsbury- Mayfield’s past relationship that sounds like a bad fit

  82. RiggedNFL Says:

    A-List backup???

Pass that thing this way Joe!

  83. Dirk Disco Says:

Go get OC Eric Bieniemy and promise him the Head Coaching position when Bowles leaves.

  84. GhostofBrady Says:

Congrats to Canales. He worked many hard years in Seattle. And earned and deserved this chance. I won’t say good luck to him since I am all Bucs. May be wish him 7-10 seasons in perpetuity with dropping 2 to the Bucs each year so we can win the division every year :). Seven wins a year would be a miracle upgrade compare to what the Panthers have been doing for awhile.

The offense may suit Bryce Young. It does take a bit of time to learn especially if the NFL game has not slowed down for you yet. I don’t think it has for Bryce even though he got lots of game experience this year.

  85. Defense Rules Says:

Tye … ‘Bucs are screwed! Dave was the one that saved TB job another year. SUCKS TO BE STUCK WITH BOWLES AT HC!!!’

I liked Canales & am happy for him. HC jobs don’t come along all that often, and it’s good to see a Bucs’ coordinator move up. BUT … he DIDN’T save Todd Bowles’ job. If anything, it was the other way around. Bowles’ #7 defense (contributing 27 takeaways among other things) made this Bucs’ offense look a lot better than it would’ve looked if it was being supported by an average (or worse) defense. Same goes for our kicker scoring 120 of our 348 points (McLaughlin scored over a third of our points actually) & our punter getting us out of some deep field position holes game-after-game. Made our offense look good enough to rank #20 in Points Scored at 20 PPG average.

You obviously dislike Todd Bowles Tye, and that’s your prerogative obviously, but at least give him credit for what he accomplished this year. He’s not perfect like so many JBFers let him know daily, but he steered this Bucs’ ship through a lot of rough waters this year & last. Ending up in the Top-8 of the ‘last standing teams’ is quite an accomplishment IMO.

  86. Let EM Bake Says:

Congratulations Dave!! I will miss his upbeat Tuesdays. Its when someone is gone that their value is truly measured. This, I fear, could have a cataclysmic Dominoe effect. Mike is now a 50/50 proposition. Licht must get a grade A, proven OC asap. Offer the moon to Todd Monken. Mike staying or going will dictate his confidence in Licht’s choice. Damn….

  87. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs To Add Two Third-Round Draft Picks For Canales Hire
    January 25th, 2024

‘Joe got this wrong, quoted the NFL rule but missed a fine-print qualifier. Apologies.’

OK, I’m confused (again). Do we get 2 comp picks or not? Someone wrote that Canales would’ve had to have been here for TWO years for us to get the comps. Is that true Joe?

  88. SB~LV Says:

I think Rod Munch is available

  89. Dave Pear Says:

One year of Bloweszo was enough for Canales. The Panthers have a real defense. Not the genius scheme that can’t stop the pass, but at least is soft against the run.

  92. Go Bucs Says:

I’m not mad Coach Canales took the job, great for him! I’m mad that Baker has to learn a new system yet again. Baker has had more OC’s than just about anyone. Baker has never had stability with any team he’s been on!

Yeah, he seems to know everything.

  94. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Well we knew when he was hired we knew it would probably be a one year thing. lol

  95. JD12 Says:

Just throwing this out on the table, but doesn’t this potentially open the door a little bit more for the Bucs to hire Belichick? He brings Mcdaniels to run the offense, his sons & Patricia to run the D. Not sure Licht is gonna give up GM powers but certainly curious to see how that plays out. Also, not sure how the Bucs can spin the Bowles firing given that he did win a playoff game.

Not saying I want Bill but certainly an option to get Bowles out.

  96. Bucfan1988 Says:

Baker Mayfield supporters aren’t gonna wanna read this…

Since you lost the OC that has been grooming Mayfield in this system, why the heck should we resign Mayfield back now?????

    Canales was awesome for him…

I say let Mayfield go now.
Get a comp pic for him and save cap dollars….

See what you have in Trask maybe OR grab a f/a QB that might mesh with the new OC that we bring in…..

Wowwwwww, this is shocking to say the least with Canales….
Good for him. Seems like a good guy.

  97. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ why the heck should we resign Mayfield back now?????”

Cause finding a good QB NFL in the NFL is very hard? And the Bucs just had one.

Lets not pretend that Mayfields success this year was ONLY because of run run pass Canales

  98. Bucfan1988 Says:

Yeah, maybe Eric Bieniemy now as our OC ???

    His offensive scheme seems decent

  99. Boss Says:

good for him. told you whiners… now look for mike to walk.

we will be stuck with a qb who overachieved and horrible coach in denial who had a cake schedule, horrible division and stacked roster

no more stacked roster soon, welcom several new HC’s to the nfc south and we are back in brown bag land.

    bwbahahahahahha

    I TOLD YOU SO!!!

  100. Bojim Says:

So that’s the gratitude he shows the Bucs? Not wishing he would fail but it would be funny. Ironic when we beat them twice

  101. Zman Says:

20th ranked O and dead last in rushing. We get draft picks, seems like a win. He’ll last two years there. Kingsbury!

  102. Let EM Bake Says:

R.O…. actually, Baker and Cliff are fine. Back in the TT days, Baker’s dad was “that” dad….. always in the coach’s ear.. “Play my boy!”, etc..It caused a bit of friction that both Baker and Cliff have moved past. Kingsbury would be a good hire.

  103. Chris Says:

Worst running attack in the league, guy never called a play before this season. It’s too soon. He has a bright future, but he needs to put in the time first. Chances are that the Panthers will remain in the cellar. Too bad for the bucs, would have loved to see what we could do with a 2nd year in the system for the players.

  104. BakerFan Says:

Well next date of bleeding out is March 13th at 4pm est.

  105. Statguy Says:

With all the uncertainty might as well tag Mayfield and trade him if you get a taker and minimize your long term risk of you dont

  106. GhostofBrady Says:

    Bucfan1988 Says:
“Baker Mayfield supporters aren’t gonna wanna read this. Since you lost the OC that has been grooming Mayfield in this system, why the heck should we resign Mayfield back now?????”

Baker did thrive in this exact offense with the Rams. Any chance maybe Baker helped Canales look good too since he did not have a high learning curve to make the offense work? Canales won’t have veterans like Baker and Geno going into Carolina. I bet they binge one year on Cousins or trade for Mullens in Minnesota as stop-gaps until Bryce Young turns into Jordan Love.

Maybe poach GB or Minnesota of their coaches. And taking a stab at Baker’s buddy in Cincy Joe Mixon – if Mixon is cut to save $9M in cap space. And maybe upgrade a guard in the draft or FA.

If anything, this makes it more likely Baker will ask for more money. Baker is now at risk for less money in the future trying to salvage the Buc’s offense so he will want more guarantees now as this becomes more likely his last chance to bank.

  107. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We had better change our offense! A division rival now has an inside look at it!

  108. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Fire Bowles. Seriously now. He’s not going to want to change the offense, so Canales will know us too well.

  109. TampabayDJ Says:

What a scumbag for leaving the place that gave you the opportunity. Now we might lose everyone. If he would have stayed , I’m sure he would have been our head coach in the next year or so. He JUST started calling plays , he could barely run the offense , now he’s going to run the Panthers entire team ? He just blew up his own career , he won’t last long with that owner. He had it made here , but he gave us the middle finger especially when he interviewed the week of the loins game. Now Evans is gone , no reason to sign Baker to a huge contract if he isn’t with Davie boy . That just set off a domino effect and we will feel the pain of it. He had a great thing going here , and we would have been very good next year. Now ? We will still be better than the stinking Panthers. F Canales for doing this to us !! Hope he gets canned before week 6 like the last 4 coaches have in Carolina. Go Bucs

  110. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    They couldn’t offer Harbaugh enough?

  111. davebucfan Says:

maybe Pete Carroll would consider being an offensive coordinator, then they wouldn’t have to learn new offense .

  112. Milton Says:

Congratulations to those commenters here who said it would be a wasted season and accomplish nothing by playing Baker as he wouldn’t win anything and he would leave after the season and we’d be left having no clue how our second round quarterback can do with starters in a game. What a clusterfark.

Tepper has millions and his EGO on the line with the pick of Bryce Young!!!

Canales is not being brought in to find ANOTHER QB he’s being brought in to save Young’s career and with it Tepper’s MASSIVE EGO!!!

Baker is NOT going to Carolina. He asked to be waived from the sh!tshow last year. Two teams that Baker will not play for…Carolina and Cleveland.

I don’t think ME13 goes to Carolina either. IF he gives up his chance to retire as a Buc and Houston makes a respectable offer he might consider that…excellent young QB and his hometown for all intents.

Let’s go snag Tod Monken from the ravens

    Dang it!!!

    Go Bucs!

I really just don’t see how canales is held in such high regard. His play calling all year was just mediocre. How long did it take him to figure out White??? Did he ever figure him out and use him
To his potential? Or do we just blame it on the O-line?? I believe as the OC the problems you need to figure out are how to make do with what you have while keeping balance. He certainly did not excel at that.

Division games have been so boring the past couple years. Maybe having our former OC and HC coaching will make things interesting and bring some division competition.
