Dave Canales Explains One Major Area Where Mike Evans Separates Himself From The Pack

January 13th, 2024

Gets props from coach.

If someone was to break down what makes Mike Evans so special, of course people would reference how he is able to get separation.

Evans has a big advantage in other areas of his game, too, like wingspan, skying for balls, physicality and, of course, his beautiful footwork along the sidelines.

Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales admires all of those attributes. However, Canales believes what gives Evans an edge is how smart he is.

“The best I can sum it up is just this football IQ that’s unbelievable,” Canales said. “The way that he makes himself available in double coverage and triple coverage, consistently, when they’re pushing somebody back there to him.

“He always finds a way to beat the leverage of the secondary, the leverage of maybe an inside linebacker trying to help out. And then he’s just an ultimate competitor – he’s exactly what you want.

“He’s the guy that, whatever the stakes are, whatever the score is, he’s still striving to be his best. He’s still striving to score, to get open.”

Canales later said just how fortunate and lucky he is to work with Evans in his first year as a playcaller.

Joe has heard Canales say Evans is the best receiver he’s ever worked with. Given the talent Canales had for over a decade in Seattle, that’s saying a lot.

Mike is my favorite Buc of the Licht era. Favorite since Ronde. Don’t let him get away, Licht! We can do just as well with other QBs, but we would suffer greatly without Mike.

Evans is my all-time favorite Buc. We have been so lucky to have him and they need to find a way to keep him.

    Please re-sign Evans.

Hey Dave, if he always finds a way to get open in coverage why don’t you try throwing the ball to him instead of running up the GD middle?

  6. David Says:

    Re-sign him!!!!!

One of my favorite Bucs players of all time. I liked a lot of them over the years, but he’s right up there at the top. Have a good game Mike!

Extremely lucky to have him. Mike, Chris and Baker all have a high football IQ. Mikes best asset is he is a beast on contested catches. Good trio, will only get better if Licht can keep the gang together

So happy that Mike Evans and Lavonte David have had a chance to experience success (in Tampa Bay!) at the end of their careers.

It’s been a pleasure watching these guys. They’ve clearly gotten it done on the field, and seemingly have been great citizens as part of our Tampa Bay community.

Two sure fire Ring of Honor guys!

ME13: a wideout built like a TE. Tough as nails and probably holds the record for bad OPI calls. First Offensive player to be voted into Canton from the lowly Tampa Bay Bucs. In Licht I trust. He will $$reward ME13 and LVD. They win tomorrow night–how sweet it is!!!!!!
