Could The Bucs Luck Into Michael Penix?

January 31st, 2024

Washington QB Michael Penix.

“This Joe” is loathe to type about the draft in January. By the time March ends Joe is burnt from draft chatter and ready to puke from all the draft talk and just wants to punch someone who uses the word “mock.”

(There is no freaking reason why the NFL holds the draft in late April. It can be held first week in April. The NFL already has OTAs in April and May and minicamp in June.)

Joe has made it clear with all the first-round quarterbacks coming out in the draft, the Bucs must get one of them. This may be the best quarterback draft since 1983. Guys going in the late teens would any other year be top-10 picks.

The Bucs draft at No. 26. Ordinarily, that would be way out of reach for a highly-touted quarterback. Maybe not this year.

Over at NFL.com, Daniel Jeremiah, a former NFL scout for the Crows and Eagles who Joe knows consults often with NFL general managers, has a ranking — not a mock — of the top 50 players in the draft.

At No. 40 is Pasco County’s very own Washington quarterback Michael Penix.

Penix has exceptional arm strength and toughness. He has a unique, whippy, three-quarters delivery from the left side, and the ball explodes out of his hand. He can hang on his back foot and effortlessly drive the ball 55 yards. He excels driving throws outside and tosses a beautiful, lofting deep ball. He does have issues getting throws up and down in the middle of the field. His ball can stay flat. He is quick to process and consistently gets to No. 3 in the route progression. He flashed the ability to avoid, escape and create against Texas in the College Football Playoff. He’s been through a litany of injuries during his career, but he managed to overcome them and led Washington to the national title game. Overall, durability is a legitimate concern, but I believe in his combination of vision, accuracy and arm strength.

So why if Penix is so good is he at No. 40? Teams, Jeremiah reasons, will be spooked by his injury history.

That’s fair. However, if Penix slips to the late teens, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has to go get him. The only other way the Bucs are going to get a stud quarterback in the draft any other year is to lose 14 or 15 games.

But what about Baker Mayfield, Joe? What about him? You sign the Pro Bowler to a three-year contract with some CYA clauses. Who knows what Mayfield will be like with a new coordinator? Nobody knows or will know until September.

Let Penix sit. It worked for Aaron Rodgers, it worked for Pat Mahomes and it worked for Jordan Love. Why wouldn’t it work for Penix?

If Mayfield can’t keep up his strong play without Dave Canales around, hey, the Bucs are covered. They have their quarterback already on the roster.

If Mayfield continues to ball out, well, you’ve got one helluva trade chip in your pocket. Look at the shakedown that Houston did to Cleveland for Deshaun Watson.

I hope not. We already have one QB pick we are wasting!

    Geez

    Go Bucs!

  2. ModHairKen Says:

Yes. This would be a great pickup. Spot on on all accounts, this Joe.

  4. RBUC Says:

●IF negotiations don’t workout with Baker Bucs should IMMEDIATELY sign Jake Browning for half the money. Penix injury history is too risky for my taste
●Johnson Powers-Johnson is the best Center in the draft and Bucs might want to grab him at #26 cause Edge Rushers are thin in this draft
●Bucs desperately need a physical runner and Trey Benson from FSU would fit the bill

  5. Onetrickpony Says:

  6. Buc king Says:

I honestly would love to.l see Trask play.
I hope the new o cord like him and wants to start him.
If he comes in and 👀 nothing then ill.except Kyle as a bust.
I knew he wouldn’t see the field with Brady and I knew toilet Bowl didn’t wanna gamble on him and for todd it may have saved his job for another year.
Personally wish we could of got bill here as head coach but basing it on the fact he can’t make the picks.

  7. Leighroy Says:

In all the “let him sit” cases cited, those teams had aging quarterbacks (Favre, Smith, Rodgers) and drafted QBs of the future. Mahommes was not guaranteed to be the QB he is now coming out of college, Rodgers was a #1 overall talent that fell in GB lap in the 20’s, and Love very much was a project who needed at least 2 years to season.

Plus it would be rather unintelligent to resign a 28yr old FA QB for the amount of guaranteed money Baker will command, with the intention of then immediately undermining his status for the 2nd, 3rd years and beyond of said contract by drafting a 1st round QB.

If Baker is your quarterback, he’s your guy! You are committing! Did you marry your wife and then the following week pick up a permanent side piece on your honeymoon? This is an either/or QB situation. Strictly.

  8. heyjude Says:

I really like Penix. He has had ACL and shoulder injuries, but many coaches won’t be worried about it. We will have to see what happens. He could work well along with Baker too.

  9. QBKilla Says:

Why draft an injury prone prospect when you can re-sign the guy who proved his worth? Draft a pass rusher and some O-line help!

  10. K_bassuka Says:

I just want a QB that can perform at a higher rate for 10 + years. A true franchise QB, unlike Maybefield and the apparent wated pick in Trask. Injuries are always a concern for the QB position.

  11. Todd Says:

But, but, but…Inthought this was the year to take Trasknoff the shelf now that he’s all Mahomes’d up sitting on the bench?!

I thought Kyle was going to be our Bucs Messiah!

    No?!

    Say it ain’t so!!!

  12. adam from ny Says:

this guy is not going to translate well to the nfl

  13. Mike Says:

This is irrelevant……he’s not going to be there when we pick in the first round and certainly not at pick number 40…….Next

  14. Allbuccedup Says:

If the Bucs are serious about Penix they will know his real health status at the combine in a month. If his status is good but not great he could drop to the Bucs. If so they will have that in mind when they sign Mayfield.

  15. Joe in Michigan Says:

Well, we know Jason Licht loves having draft picks and O-Linemen. Knowing that the Bucs already gave up a 5th Rounder, I highly doubt Licht trades up and gives up more draft capital. He’s also probably smitten with the Center from Oregon, and that’s a position of need for the Bucs.

  16. adam from ny Says:

he’s going to bust to the high heavens…

i’m going to say bo nix will be the good qb who comes out…

i don’t know who the great qb is that comes out…that’ll be determined over time…

a couple will be low level back ups, and the rest will be busts…

^^^ this dude had bust written all over him

  17. Beeej Says:

That year the Packers spent the #1 pick on Love instead of a WR, else TRADING for a WR, they were so close to the Show. (Losing by 5 to the Bucs) All for a QB to sit for 3 years

  18. adam from ny Says:

when i was a kid, they always let a drafted qb sit for years…

then he came in fully groomed and nfl ready, and things usually went pretty well…

most teams simply had a guy waiting in the wings…it’s how it was back then…

i think the bucs threw doug williams in right away…i became a fan in 1979…he was either drafted in 78 or 79…so he didn’t really sit long, or was thrown right in – which was very rare back then

  19. Larry Says:

This kind of makes me wonder. In 2021 we drafted Trask in the late 2nd round, gave him a 5M+ contract and let him sit. Now we’re talking about drafting another QB to sit behind Mayfield? If we made a mistake, own up and cut him.

  20. stpetebucfan Says:

” This MAY be the best quarterback draft since 1983. Guys going in the late teens would any other year be top-10 picks.”

Oh PUHLEEZE!!! The operative word here is MAY. I’ve been led down this promised land road before here! Remember “Johnny Football”…gotta have him he’ll lead the Bucs to the promised land. Thankfully Licht saw through that BS and took the REAL athlete from A&M ME13.

But the sour taste in my mouth comes from my own stupidity!!! I bought in hook line and sinker. The2015 the Draft had not one but TWO “Can’t miss QB’s”

In the beginning I wanted MM because of JW’s “character” issues. Oh but it’s only his youth cried FSU faithful…he’s grown up now. RIGHT! And so in the 2015 Draft with not ONE but TWO ‘can’t miss” QB’s they couldn’t even reach the 50-50 shot of successful 1st round QB’s!
I supported JW because I thought he had talent…still do believe that…and so I was encouraged to ignore his cement head and total lack of character! So yeah I’m prejudiced when I read this site hyping ANY freaking QB…because this site also has failed the 50-50 mark. BTW I do agree at least with the choice. If the Bucs throw a dart at the 50-50 board Penix is an excellent choice.

I’m with RBUC. I honestly haven’t scouted college talent enough to know if he’s right about the players…but I LOVE his direction. IF JPJ is the best center in the draft…that is a MAJOR need get him! QB is not a major need. If Trey Benson is the power running missing…great..the Bucs need a power RB.

They are SET next year at QB. Sign Baker. Then hope that Trask comes in when Baker gets hurt..odds are with his style he’ll miss a few games…THEN you can have a real debate.

The Bucs NEED two dominant OL. They NEED at least one more edge rusher!
They can “use” help at other spots. They have Trask one more year on the cheap, sign Baker and address the real need…THE TRENCHES!

  21. Hodad Says:

It’s the most important position on a team. Right now the only QB under contract for 24 is Trask. Yet people would rather draft another JTS at #26 then maybe getting a future franchise QB. I say JTS because that’s the kind of edge rushers you get picking that far down in the first round. Sign Baker, let him groom a young stud. Keep Trask for his final year so Canales doesn’t grab him. Trask would help Young learn the offense, and be a ready back up for the Panthers. Now we go into the season with a quality QB room for our new OC.

  22. bob in valrico Says:

Assuming Penix sits for two years that would make him 26 to start the next season. IMO, that’s a four year delay in starting an NFL career and gaining valuable experience to get him ready for NFL defenses. Now if he had played better against Michigan, we probably would not be talking about getting him as a late first round pick. Coupled with the injury history, he could possibly drop even further.

  23. WyomingJoe Says:

    Are you kidding Joe, lol?

What could possibly go wrong with signing Baker and then drafting a QB in Round 1? Sends a wonderful message of encouragement to both Baker and Trask.

Either sign Baker and improve the O-line, or don’t sign Baker. One or the other.

  24. Bobby M. Says:

The obsession with “top qb” picks is flawed, take the best available talent where we have the greatest need and can come in to make an impact. We drafted Trask high when we had ZERO intention of him stepping on the field while we were trying to make a SB run. We’ve literally got nothing from him, haven’t even seen him actually play, total waste of a pick.

  25. Tucker Says:

If the bucs sign baker they will more pressing needs than drafting a player that won’t even contribute next season.

  26. BucsFan81 Says:

We already have enough guys with Injury history that only play half a season see Dean and Davis for example. Hell no to drafting a QB. We still don’t know what we have in the last QB we drafted Trask.

  27. Viktor Vaughn Says:

Undersized and injury prone, END of story.

  28. Oneilbuc Says:

He’s probably better than Baker Mayfield right now lol 🤣🤣!! The reason why we can’t find a OC is because they don’t want to coach Baker Mayfield. This is the only fan base that thinks Baker Mayfield is a franchise quarterback!! Lol 😂😂 if Penix is there get him .

  29. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs could draft another DT in 1st round , too. They’ve got Vea and Kancey, but hey, let the new guy sit or use him for trade bait…
Mayfield compares favorably to J Goff- Bucs were a Detroit offensive line away from playing in NFC Championship Game. And Lions were a Head Coach making 2nd half decisions like he was drunk at a poker table away from being in the SB.
    Bucs are good at QB.
Speed- WR and RB, interior OLine, Pass Rush/LB are priorities.

  30. NYbucsfan Says:

Hard pass. I don’t want a quarterback that has a funky throwing motion that’s already had two ACL surgeries. Sure he had success in college he also had two first round stud wide receivers on his team that he could throw it up to not to mention one of the best offensive lines in college football. Can’t we just draft a quarterback with a normal throwing motion for a change.

  31. Marky Mark Says:

. Look at the shakedown that Houston did to Cleveland for Deshaun Watson…..HA Bravo Joe. John Gotti could not have done a better mob hit than the Texans did on the Clowns.

  32. Marky Mark Says:

Onielbuc show us your hidden camera tapes. Bowles alwaYs takes his time. The other guys were buddies of the interviewer.

  33. stpetebucfan Says:

“that’s the kind of edge rushers you get picking that far down in the first round.”

YaYa was snatched in the THIRD round. AGAIN the scouting is what is critical not the round!

Simply take the BPA at OL and edge rusher through the first four rounds. If Corum slips to the second grab him. The knock on him is he’s not a good receiver.

RB’s are tasked to do 3 things. Run, Catch, or block. White is top 5 at receiving. He’s deceptively good at running, give him a decent OL and he’ll be OK. He can’t block a lick. PRIORITIZE that in the off season.

Corum is potentially a top 5 runner(see Ohio St game and that sick run against Bama in the title game) he’s not a receiving threat which is why he’ll drop, don’t know about his block skills.

White and Corum could make a dynamic duo of complementary RB’s. IF the coaches could teach them to block…then the Bucs are cooking with real fire!

  34. All_da_way Says:

Bucs don’t have the OL to protect a QB like Penix. If Penix goes to a team with an elite OL I can see it.

  35. Doooshlarue Says:

I agree with your first take SPBF.
The Joes love to dream and get all lathered up about top-rated QBs in the draft……..all those “pro-ready” and “can’t miss” options.
    It’s laughable that it continues.

    And oh yeah………
    How bout that Johnny Football?

    #lovejohnny
    😂😂💦

  36. RBUC Says:

I believe Penix is a 6th year senior. These QBs run to the Pac12,throw for a zillion yards cause All the team defenses are suspect, and people believe they are better than they really are! These QBs are simply not as good as people think !

  37. RustyRhinos Says:

Yes to Penix, only if Nix is off the board. I would take Nix all day. We wouldn’t have to be in this conversation if the team had just #colapsedforCaleb as we heard again and again on these here posts… Several different should be available. We have Trask and Wolford(for how long?) Maybe we sign Baker maybe not. Maybe we play Trask maybe not, we do need an OC who can keep our game plans in the 21st century. With or without Baker/Trask 2024 QB draft choice. I want to see Nix in Buccaneer Colors. Tossing TDs and Running when protection breaks down. 1st RD OLine Center preferred, QB, DL, DE, CB, CB, S, RB, WR. Not in that order but BPA.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  38. Doooshlarue Says:

Franchise Baker and see if he can have another good year with a new OC.
If he does, great. Sign him long term.
    Also, let ME13 walk.
I know, I’m an idiot and Mike should be a Buc for life…….
He can go somewhere else and they can pay for his soon to come decline.
I appreciate what he did for us through the years but sentimentality isn’t a recipe for future team success.
We can use the money for 2 quality FAs on either side of the ball.

  39. BakerFan Says:

This team needs too many other positions to waste a 1st rounder on a backup qb that may develop….. Litcht is smarter than that.

Oneilbuc: I know you fancy yourself as The Quarterback Whisperer, but you’re expected to actually watch the games. Questions I have for you that I’m pretty sure you won’t answer:

    1) Who said Mayfield is a “Franchise QB”? Most people say he’s decent.
    2) Did you watch Penix vs. Michigan? Did he look NFL-ready to you? If your answer is yes, what planet are you from?

  42. John beasley Says:

The Bucs should be embarrassed. Trask is picked high in the draft. And has had little time to develop.
But it may be the Trask does not ask enough of the Bucs. He is a great player. But he is only started two years, and that because the Florida quarterback got injured but his play was phenomenal.

  43. realistic-optimistic Says:

Penix lost me in that Michigan game. His numbers are pretty good when passing from a clean pocket (which happened often this season), but they’re not good when he’s under pressure. Michigan had him rattled immediately in that game and he never recovered mentally. Not a good sign. If he falls to 26, maybe, but I no longer think he’s worth a trade-up.

  44. LuckyBucsFan Says:

    No.

The physical talent is there but I’m not confident the cerebral talent is.

Every time I see him interview it’s just Jameis Winston 2.0 for me.

  45. Tony Marks Says:

“Joe has made it clear with all the first-round quarterbacks coming out in the draft, the Bucs must get one of them.”

Joe has made it clear he has bought into the hype and the very hype he has bought into is why the bucs will likely not get penix. There are 25 teams ahead of us

None of them will not see anything they absolutely need and take a risk on Penix? Unlikely given the same hype and reasoning Joe is using.

  46. BuxfaninTX Says:

Didn’t we waste a second round pick on a QB that’s never played already?

  47. dmatt Says:

Joe says who knows what mayfield would be like with a new coordinator.

I say who knows what Penix would be like in an elite league with new coaches, coordinator, n players.

  48. ATLBuc Says:

We already have a backup who’s better than Mayfield but can’t get on the field because he’s “inexperienced”. So why waste a #1 when you know Bowles isn’t going to play him? We need an edge rusher!

  49. A Bucs Fan Says:

My concern with Penix is his injury history and that he crumbles under pressure.

He’s the best pure passer in the class though.

Whether you like Jake Browning or not, he is not available. He is an “EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENT”
The Bengals have control of him for next year by just making a simple tender.
It is sort of like pre arbitration years in baseball.

All the Bengals have to do is increase his salary a little bit and they have control of him for 2024.

  52. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Don’t draft a QB just to draft a QB. Baker almost brought us to the NFC championship game, and we have other needs to fill (center, guard, edge, CB, safety). Take best player available of our needs.

  53. RichieRich Says:

Tampa people and their fixtation for Penix because he’s from Tampa, is just as bad as Gator fan and Trask…. I actually prefer Trask, he doesn’t have the injury history, they’re almost the same age. It’s a pipe dream by local media that has almost no chance of happening.

    Trask lovers,

If Trask is so good and has so much potential, why did 31 teams pass on him? Why do those same 31 teams not try to trade for him? Could it be that 32 general managers and a s**t ton of coaches see something (or a lack of something) y’all are missing?

  57. Elite Vita Says:

With Penix being a southpaw, couldn’t Tristan return to his Right Tackle spot since that way he becomes “the Blind Side” tackle again. If so I say we jump at the chance to draft him!

  58. Just Saying Says:

Sweet! Draft a QB high and let him sit for a couple of years behind an older probowl qb and then he will be ready and able for his own championship run. That’s brilliant! But wait we already did that except the part where you see what the highly drafted QB gets to show what he can do on the field.

  59. ATLBuc Says:

    BichieBich
The Pro Bowl is a farce. Even Jameis made the pro bowl. I’m not knocking Baker. He played some good games. But he played an equal amount of bad games. We reached our ceiling with him this year. Kyle outplayed him in training camp and in preseason games. Bowles cited his lack of experience as the reason Baker was starting. Everyone who didn’t follow Baker from Cleveland knows that

  60. Marine Buc Says:

    JJ McCarthy > M. Penix > Bo Nix…

I would rather take JJ McCarthy over Penix and he should still be available at #26.

I like Penix his long ball accuracy is amazing but I don’t like the multiple injury issues he has had. He has only played one complete season out of 5… Not good.

“The Florida native Penix suffered significant injuries in each of his four seasons at Indiana — season-ending ACL injuries in 2018 (against Penn State) and 2020 and shoulder injuries that cut his 2019 and 2021 campaigns short.”

  67. Duane in Sanford Says:

Every other year is the greatest quarterback draft ever. Every other year in between some highly drafted quarterback pans out badly for the crappy franchise that drafted him and is kicked to the curb. This past season, we picked up Clevelands No. 1 pick for $4 million. That is a much better route to go. Build the team, then bring in the quarterback.

  68. Lord Cornelius Says:

“I just want a QB that can perform at a higher rate for 10 + years”

That’s what we all want lol. That was also the mentality for tons of drafts in the last decade+ of losing we went through.

  69. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Geno, I have watched every game Bo Nix played in Oregon. Those two games Penix beat Oregon this year were a “team win”. They beat my Ducks in several places. Penix got hot in the second game and pulled Washington win out of his pocket. But, multiple times in both games when Penix was pressured he threw horrible passes that reminded me of Jamis! He throws a beautiful long ball, however, he does not inspire confidence. He is probably a Jamis 2.0. Bo Nix has played more college games than any other QB ever. He does NOT rattle when things go south. Bo Nix >>>Penix!

Watch who drafts Bo. Unless that team has an established QB, Bo Nix will start his first year.

    NO QB.

Agreed on a pass rusher and O-Line help.

I don’t care where the QB came from, as long as he plays a winning kind of football, which Baker Mayfield did this past year

He did indeed. For 9 out of 19 games

  79. Tbbucs3 Says:

Marine Buc, JJ McCarthy sucks, everyone except Michigan fans can see that he’s not a legitimate NFL prospect

  80. Tbbucs3 Says:

The Bucs arent taking a QB within the first 5 rounds this year…..they will be focused on building around Mayfield

The Bucs won 10 games, 9 regular season, 1 playoff game. 10-9 is a winning record.

  82. ATLBUC Says:

He still played like garbage in 9 games

I don’t watch college football, so my thoughts are only from watching like 10 minutes of highlights and his senior bowl throws — but he certainly has an NFL arm, however, I’m not sure I’d call it exceptional, which I personally put only a few guys in, like AR-15, Josh Allen, Stafford, etc. He’s a notch below that, from what I saw – which is more like Winston, Baker, etc – which is still very very good, but I’d safe that word exceptional only for the tippy top of guys.

But his arm looked very good and he threw with NFL velocity. That is important because Trask, for example, coming out of college could throw a 60 yard pass with ease, but he didn’t get any velocity on the ball so it just hung in the air, and those are INTs in the NFL. It took him basically two years of relearning how to throw before he started to look like an NFL QB this past preseason.

Outside of that it was hard to take much from the highlights since he was generally just sitting in the pocket not under much pressure, and most guys look good in that situation. Based on what I read about him, that’s his issue, once the pocket breaks down his accuracy goes to hell – and he’s not a runner. For an Arians offense, where you want a traditional pocket passer with a big arm, that’s not an issue – so his fit would be based on that.

Also he’s already 24-years old with a long injury history.

Personally I’d be a bit on the fence about this one. I’d much rather give Chicago a 3rd for Justin Fields – assuming he goes that cheap.

  84. Larrd Says:

Baker played well all year. His stats are good and he’s a pro bowler. Folks who think the Bucs have to draft a qb in the first round are nutty.

  85. Chrisonthecape Says:

Draft fat guys and dbacks only.

  86. Tbbucs3 Says:

    ATLBuc= Traskie

  87. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Well if the Bucs don’t get a qb, and they don’t believe in Trask, we could be in real trouble if one play goes wrong and Baker gets really hurt, we could be in the middle the abyss.

  88. Usfbucs Says:

I didn’t watch him in the regular season but he didn’t look great in the college football championship

  89. Oneilbuc Says:

I rather Penix over Baker Mayfield because Baker has proven to be a inconsistent quarterback his whole career even this year he was inconsistent. And plus we have to hope our division is still bad just to make the playoffs. And when you ask if Baker a franchise quarterback most people say no or the hesitate and say he can be if . So that means he’s not a franchise quarterback because if you bring up names like Mahomes, Borrow, Josh Allen and others no one hesitate to say they are franchise quarterbacks . If we can draft Penix then draft him . Even if you bring Baker Mayfield back for 1 more year and if he doesn’t take the contract then let him walk.

Joe one could say too that Trask sat too he also sat behind the greatest of all time. Why draft another QB when they haven’t used the one they drafted all ready ?
