Chris Godwin The Secret Weapon?

January 15th, 2024

Rose up last five games.

Now Joe is not trying to stir up trouble here in praising Chris Godwin. The following is not an attempt to get people p!ssed off at One Buc Palace. But the timing cannot be ignored.

Joe has already been called to the principal’s office about this subject. Thing is, Joe doesn’t believe in coincidences.

You cannot tell Joe that when Mariah Godwin took to Instagram to vent defending her man Chris, it didn’t get results. Why is Joe typing this?

Well, would you believe that since Mariah Godwin’s social media rant, her husband has more receiving yards than second-team All-Pro Mike Evans?

Evans has more touchdowns, but in yards receiving, in the five games since Mariah Godwin went public with her feelings about the Bucs offense and coaches, Chris Godwin has 418 yards receiving to Evans’ 213.

Evans does have three receiving touchdowns in those five games compared to Godwin’s one.

So is Godwin the X-factor here? Or will the Eagles tonight take the bait and focus on Godwin, and then Evans goes wilding on Philadelphia’s defense?

    THROW the ball!!!!

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Godwin isn’t the player he used to be since his injury last season…he’s definitely lost a step or two….the speed has dropped off and it is hurting him separating from DBs.

Godwin has essentially turned into a slot receiver and he may have to best hands on the team next to ME13.

If Baker is still throwing nothing longer than 12 yard ducks all over the field, it’ll be “Dink N Dunk” all night long.

  3. Lombardi Lenny Says:

Look how we played last week against the leagues worst team- zero TD’s and could have easily lost the game. How’d we play the week before at home against the Saints- we got curb stomped .

But apparently 99% of people in here already crowned the Bucs beating the Eagles and are mentally onto Detroit next week. lol

Season ends today fellas. Not only that, our draft pick won’t get us a QB and our schedule will be harder next season. Get ready to endure a few years of pain.

  4. Lord Cornelius Says:

    lmao

  5. Hail2dabucs Says:

Guys , I’m neither a baker guy or a Trask guy . Just play the guy that can hit wr’s down the field . If baker’s health is good enough to do that , then let’s effin go ! Does Trask with a healthy arm w/ no experience need to be the guy ? Let’s effin go ! I don’t care who is under center , it’s going to take a great game plan and play from all ! GO BUCS !!! BEAT THOES STUPID IGGLES

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    stop the BS now!

Baker is starting……we all know this……..

  7. LOL Says:

    100% percent Joe.

The first pass of the game after Maria’s outburst was to Godwin. The gameplan was obliviously different that week (Against ATL if I remember correctly). Balls were being forced to Godwin that had not been all season.

I think Canales definitely made adjustments to get Godwin more involved immediately.

I think this has opened up the offense a bit and contributed to this teams growth as a whole.

I am glad someone inside the building called the coaches out. This team looked like hot garbage before that happened. They look mediocre to decent in some games since.

  8. HC Grover Says:

Put him in the slot and turn him loose. He will ruffle some Eagle Feathers.

  9. Beeej Says:

I think teams have been doubling him up since he blew up in that first Carolina game

  10. ChiBuc Says:

IMHO, the secret weapon to victory tonight is RW catching quick outs out of the backfield. This team cannot risk Baker hanging out waiting for WRs to get open downfield. While BM is a warrior, it’s hard to image him being able to continue after another shot to the ribs

  11. GP Says:

As long as we “go wilding”, I don’t have a preference as to who has the most yards at the end of the day

  12. Luis Says:

You sound like my ex wife I don’t want to stir trouble

  13. Duane in Sanford Says:

Godwin is an xfactor in the slot. When he is in the slot, it is harder for the coverage to double him and ME13. We dont need to focus on any one particular player tonight. If Baker can get the ball out to Evans, Godwin, or White, we will be in good hands. None of this will matter if the defense fails to stop the run.

  14. Rusty Shackleford Says:

OT: The White House has been the victim of a “swatting” call this morning. Lol. I don’t care who ya’ are, that’s just plain funny.

  15. SufferingSince76 Says:

I don’t care if they dink and dunk all night long, as long as it leads to a score. Take what they give you. Pretty straightforward, actually.

  16. BucsBeast Says:

Mayfield FLAT out told us he targeted Mike 1st because, he didn’t want to be the guy to cost Mike his streak. Its no coincidence that after Mike got his 1k, Godwin took off.

  17. Rusty Shackleford Says:

So if it rains like the 1979 monsoon, what do we do ? Just run for three yards and mud ?

  18. D Cone Says:

I would think it’s more of keeping the receivers . Momma Godwin’s post came about the same time Evans hit his Grand and then it was on to Chris.

As far as this game goes use Mayfield until he throws in the towel. He has to prove he can stand up to the wear and tear of a 17 game season and be worth crap in the playoffs should a team look his way.

It would be a disservice to Trask to toss him in on the most important game of the year. Although I think he would do well.

Jorden Love has proven what can be accomplished with a QB that has studied under a Master for a few years and given a full season to settle in. Many teams will be looking for guys like that. Teams are going to be more cautious about writing big checks to QB’s that cannot seem to get thru their contracts without one or more wasted years ala Cincinnati and San Diego. Not to mention Miami and Arizona. Achilles is a freak one but if a QB cant take regular hits to the chops and producing at closer to 100% than 70% they will be passed over in Free Agency. Garoppolo is proof of that. Wentz was signed because he stays pretty healthy even though he sucks and I’m sure he gave a discount also.

  19. Jack Clark Says:

Our X factor is our OC not wasting first and second down running between the tackles!

  20. Rusty Shackleford Says:

The X-factor tonight is the Bucs being able to convert 3rd downs.

  21. Tony Marks Says:

Honestly I think its more because Evans got his 1,000 yards

That happened around the same time.

I think both Baker and Canales wanted to make sure they were not the ones to break the sequence of year to year thousand yard seasons for Mike

Once that was done the ball started to move around more until come the Saints game when they went back to the run game balance obsession.

  22. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Canales, how about a competent game plan as in using all your receivers creatively? This noise over player wives is funny. They all bitch to their fellow wives they’re buds with. They’re all on social media, and they gab back and forth. I just want the 11 best offensive starting, and a halfway decent offensive game plan. Not worried about the D or ST cos they’re ready.

  23. mike Says:

    Mariah = MVP

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘OK, so now that Joe is clear on this …’

I reread those first 3 paragraphs several times Joe, and the same question kept popping up … ‘Clear on WHAT?’

I thought first that you were apologizing in advance for praising Godwin. Then I thought you were apologizing for not believing in coincidences. But then by the 3rd paragraph I was convinced that this was all about setting the stage for not being a ‘smart@ss’.

I’m presuming that your question ‘So is Godwin the X-factor here?’ is really the bottom line here. If so, my response would be that it’s irrelevant if Mayfield plays like he did the first time we met the Eagles. His 15-of-25 (60%) for 146 yds passing is rather pedestrian, especially considering that 59 of those yds came on our LAST DRIVE in the 4th quarter when we were losing 25-3. In the ENTIRE 2nd half the Bucs ran a TOTAL of only 15 plays (5, 1, 9) resulting in a punt, safety & 1 TD with the game already out of hand. Nope, not impressed.

Evans only caught 5-of-10 for 60 yds in that game. Godwin only caught 3-of-5 for 32 yds. So 92 yds receiving … against a quality team to be sure … for 2 WRs making about $40 mil or so a year. Sorry, not impressed. Not with the 2 of them in that game, not with Mayfield in that game, and certainly not with the play-calling in that game. If we repeat that abysmal performance, everyone will be singing ‘Who Turned the Lights Out?’ instead of ‘Who Let the Dogs Out?’ tonight.

  25. Greg Says:

Godwin is such a secret even our OC don’t know him.

  26. heyjude Says:

Mariah Godwin’s social media rant was a big deal and then Godwin was getting the throws. She did it. Sometimes it takes a woman to get things done. Baker needs to have better throws to Evans too. Yes, some are dropped, but sometimes they are short and way out there.

    Go Bucs!

  27. Marky Mark Says:

Baker plays no favorites. He throws to the open dood.

  28. infomeplease Says:

The reason CG14 got more yards than ME13 since his wife went to bat for him is that DC wanted him to hit the 1000 yard mark!! Once he did DC tried to hand the ball to RW1 so he could also reach the 1000 yrd mark (the past 2 games). We all know how that turned out…a regression of the offense.
Tonight we’ll find out if DC really wants to win. If he cuts loose the offense the Bucs do have a chance for a W.

  29. Marky Mark Says:

I am tired of moms, Dad,s and wives meddling. OBJ,s Dad pushed both guys out if Cleveland. Claudio Reyna,s mom nearly destroyed Greg Berhalters soccer coaching career. Mariah dropped Palmer,s numbers. Stay out of it.

  30. infomeplease Says:

Throw on first down off play action and motion in the rain!! Quick 3 step drop passes within 2.5 seconds! BM6 please don’t hold the ball longer than that or you will be killed and KT2 will have to play in your place. Probably not good if that does happen.

  31. Bobby M. Says:

On paper I think we have just as much talent as Philly….difference will come down to coaching and I expect we’ll get out schemed on offense and defense. Look at Bowles record vs winning teams….hes won three games in two years vs teams with a winning record. Two of those were 9-8 teams….he’s in over his head. I frankly don’t think he’s that good of a DC. His defenses routinely get worked over by rookie and backup QBs. A good DC would have a field day in those games…especially against rookie QBs. His entire philosophy is built around clock management and preserving his defensive stats. It’s like he’s not remotely paying attention to how the game is flowing, anyone watching can see the run game is an effective yet we still do it and end up in 3rd and long.

  32. Marine Buc Says:

As long as Baker only needs to throw the ball 12 yards or less the Bucs will be fine…

There will be a bunch of check down throws to White tonight. Hopefully he can break a few tackles and have some decent production with the dink and dunk passing attack.

Will this be Baker’s final game in Tampa?

    We shall see.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … ‘As long as Baker only needs to throw the ball 12 yards or less the Bucs will be fine. There will be a bunch of check down throws to White tonight.’

Have a suspicion that Rachaad will have 2 shadows tonight: his own plus whichever Philly LB is tagged to shadow him. Those dump-off rarely seem to work IMO (designed short passes to get White open in space work much better from what I’ve seen).

Baker will be the offense’s big limitation tonight, just like he was in our 1st game against Philly. Bucs NEED to run the ball effectively to distract the Eagles’ defense from coming after Baker hard all night long. We don’t need to run it 50% of the time or anything like that; we just need to make Philly RESPECT THE RUN or Baker’s toast.

  34. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

“Baker will be the offense’s big limitation tonight,”

    Agreed 100%.

I also agree that the Bucs will need to have some success running the football tonight if they are to have a chance.

  35. Anthony Says:

I think baker was legitimately concerned about getting Mike his 1,000 yards this season. I believe since eclipsing 1,000 yards, the ball has been spread around quite a bit more.

  36. Anthony Says:

I think Mike’s 1,000 yards and Mariah’s post were close in time.

  37. BucsFan Says:

Playoff wins are all about being successful running the ball and playing tough hard nosed defense to prevent your opponent from running the ball and making them one dimensional. Bucs need spy on Hurts or he will hurt us with his legs.

  38. Since76 Says:

Hard to say whether canales didn’t understand Godwin’s skills/ importance or whether Baker wasn’t going through his reads. Whatever the case there was a definite shift in ball distribution. It wasn’t coincidence. The ok offense was being asked why one of the best weapons wasn’t being targeted and it forced them to adjust. So when it comes down to it coaching was failing. Whether they couldn’t coerce Baker to throw it to Godwin or Canales wasn’t including Godwin in play calling. Offensive coaches failed. Thanks for the shout out Mrs. Godwin. It worked.

  39. Jerseybuc Says:

Throw throw n throw more. Screens. , digs, curls. Slugos. Hope am wrong. It I see lot of running up the middle

  40. Baking with Canales Says:

With Bakers bad ribs, Canales will go to Rashad as the main event in both the running and passing game. I would not be surprised to see 100% Otton getting more short passes up the middle of the defense.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

No need to focus on Godwin. He has quit on the team.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Correction…focus on Godwin enough to see if his body language is tense. If it is, he is getting the ball. If it isn’t, someone else is.

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Those saying to throw the ball are not being realistic, I think. I would love to see it, but with an injured QB playing, who can only throw 10 yard passes? Not gonna happen.

  44. orlbucfan Says:

I can’t wait to read the reaction when the Bucs win tonight. Weather is starting to get iffy.

  45. Not Says:

How sad is that , it takes a wife posting frustration to make Bowels and Canales to act.
Then look at Antoine Winfield Sr. , he raises social medial hell and AWJr is all pro, won some belt as best defender from GMFB, and kudos from numerous talking heads talking about his stats !!!!

Sad , the squeeky wheel gets the oil. But both were so deserved for the players and the team and the fans.

  46. WyomingJoe Says:

Defense & Marine Buc: Love the way you guys (and a lot of others on this site) keep underestimating Baker and the Bucs. You’re not true fans at all. Idiots like you can shove your comments up your a*s!

  47. Lol Says:

Apparently to be a “real Buc Fan” you have to mindlessly consume football and not ask questions. because the strong men in charge get paid alot and know what theyre doing.

What a load of Bulls&^t, you patsies can drink the koolaid all you want.

WyomingJoe’s feelings are hurt because you talked bad about Baker. LOL give me a freaking break.

These dudes are paid millions to perform. They should be scrutinized if they aren’t

  48. realistic-optimistic Says:

    ^^^ lol … smh

  49. Lol Says:

I think WyomingJoe should change his tag to WhinyJoe.

    LOL

  50. Defense Rules Says:

WhiningJoe … ‘You’re not true fans at all. Idiots like you can shove your comments up your a*s!’

You good sir have a real problem. If anyone’s not a true fan of the Bucs, it’s you. I don’t read many of your comments any more, but of those that I have read, you seem he11-bent on denigrating anyone & everyone who disagrees with you. What a sad way to go through life.

  51. Usfbuc Says:

I hate the Godwin’s lost a step posts based on no facts. If you think ME is getting good separation then CG is also getting good separation because his is either just about the same or slightly above ME. CG catch rate has dropped significantly but his yards per target and per reception are both up. Decreased catch rate is because his drop rate and the number of uncatchable passes are both up.

Bucs need to keep CG in the slot full time. It was there that he was most effective when Brady was here.

  52. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Lol great posts. I do be calling her Whinona Joelina so there is that. All the fakerbois are super duper calafragilelistic sensitive when it comes to Fakerboi. They make up straight up lies and call people names. I’m sure you seem her sister Tonya Harding Marks. They come up here regularly holding each other’s hands. Nothing worse than male cheerleaders killing the football experience
