Carlton Davis Clears Concussion Protocol

January 6th, 2024

Update.

It appears the Bucs have a starting cornerback back!

The Bucs updated their official injury report this morning. The most important one is cornerback Carlton Davis. He cleared concussion protocol and will play in the do-or-die game at Carolina tomorrow.

The news is not as good for linebacker K.J. Britt (calf). Britt has been downgraded to doubtful.

Outside linebacker Cam Gill has a bum knee and is new to the injury report. His status is questionable.

CD will get a pick this week. He’s due.

  2. Bosch Says:

Thats a shame about Britt. I think he brings more value to the defense than can’t cover Carlton does.

  3. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I believe either Dean or Davis will exit the game injured as they always do. Usually, it happens when they are beaten deep and their pride gets injured.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    All hands on deck!

  5. realistic-optimistic Says:

If Britt is out and we have to rely on DWhite 100%, CAR will have a good day running the ball. Maybe Bryce Young will put a few moves on 45 like Minshew did.

  6. Beeej Says:

JJ Russell played quite well in his one game

  7. Crickett Baker Says:

I’m a big Britt fan. Darnit!

  8. Bucfan1988 Says:

I think between Sir Dennis & JJ Russell, they can cover for Britt…..

And yeah, if Bucs gonna Blitz, MAKE SURE THEY GET HOME.

Kitties don’t really even have any receivers anymore for what little they had to start with….

  9. Marine Buc Says:

Cool. I am so pleased that the most overpaid CB in the NFL will be able to continue allowing a 70% completion rate and a 55 PFF score.

I wonder if the Bucs will part ways with C. Davis this off-season. He is scheduled to make over $20M in 2024…

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … ‘I wonder if the Bucs will part ways with C. Davis this off-season.’

I don’t see that we have any choice but to cut him loose. Like you said, his CAP hit is scheduled to be $20.5 mil. The only way to get that down would be to renegotiate his contract (aka, extend him) & that’s not gonna happen. Unfortunately his Dead CAP cost is $14.1 mil but that’d still be a savings of $6 mil or so if we release him (depending on when, we could spread that over 2 years I believe). I anticipate we’ll draft a CB to replace him in Rnds 1-3 though.

I could also see us releasing Russell Gage ($13.4 mil CAP hit but only a $2.2 mil Dead CAP) and even maybe JTS ($3.6 mil CAP hit but only a $1.4 mil Dead CAP). Looks to me like Dean & Shaq are both safe though, because their Dead CAP far exceeds their CAP hit (can’t see us renegotiating either one of their contracts). Ryan Jensen is really costing us a bunch ($6.0 mil CAP Hit in 2024) but he’ll also stick because of his Dead CAP ($16.6 mil).

Looks like our only recourse to free up $$$ is to renegotiate the contracts for Godwin & Vea (lessen their CAP hits), sign Wirfs to a long-term contract but with a lower 2024 CAP Hit, release Davis, Gage (and JTS), then use the savings to re-sign Winfield, LVD, Evans, and a number of FAs to replace Mayfield, Gaines among others. Hard times ahead, so we’d better hope that JL nails it again in the draft.

i’m gonna say i think we trade off 1 of our 2 high paid top corners in the offseason for next to nothing, as a salary dump, and let zyon slide in as corner number 2

  12. adam from ny Says:

i think dean is more “bowles’ guy” than davis…but then again i’m making a wiid guess and speculating…if i had to make a bet as one is gone, i see dean staying and carlton moving

  13. adam from ny Says:

    @ Defense and Marine:

well…can’t we just trade one off for at least something, as opposed to an outright release ?

  14. adam from ny Says:

if devin white has an insanely good game – which he def needs at this point…

who cares if britt plays for one week – because it’s potentially DW’s last game ever suiting up as a buccaneer…

let’s see how he wants to be remembered down the homestretch

  15. NE Fan Says:

Once they start picking on Davis he’ll pull up lame. That’s what over paid, overrated slackers do.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

    Agreed.

    – Jenson
    – Gage
    – C. Davis

Probably could be cut this off-season. Probably after June 1st.

What about Shaq Barrett? His base salary is only @ $1.2M but we still owe him a slew of guaranteed money – like $26.8M… I believe the cap savings would be @ $5-$6M…

    What about Shaq Barrett?

    ^^^^^^^^
Then New England will sign him, your real team.

  18. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

    C. Davis 2024 base salary is $14M. I doubt there will be any teams willing to pay that ridiculous amount for a lower tear CB.

If we do find a trade partner the Bucs won’t get much – maybe a 5th or 6th round pick.

It’s a shame because I believe C. Davis would actually make a solid Nickel Corner. He just isn’t physical enough to be a CB1. Weak armed tackler and below average in coverage. But he is very quick with adequate speed to cover slot receivers.

But you can’t afford to pat a NCB $20M per.

  19. adam from ny Says:

    marine:

yeah i would take a super low draft pick for him in a heartbeat…that was my thought process…

    save money, slide zyon in…

bowles might love his corners tho, since he was a secondary guy when he played – so maybe he will keep his guys – and feels like he groomed them to be his perfect specimens…….lol…you never know…

and it all depends on how highly he truly regards zyon…

and if bowles is even here next season

  20. Badbucs Says:

    @DR
You think they will dump Baker? Is 24 a lost season with the cap? Bowles again as the sacrificial lamb until 25?

  21. Marine Buc Says:

Only problem with cutting or trading players is you create another whole in the roster that will need filled. Salary cap will be limited in 2024 and we only have 6 or 7 draft picks (3 in the top 100)…

I agree – I believe Zyon McCollum is ready to step up.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Davis back next season if Todd Bowles stays and the Bucs will restructure his contract and push a bunch of money into dead cap space land.

  22. NE Fan Says:

Joe in Michigan@ he wouldn’t start on the NE D. The NE wasn’t the demise of the Patriots the O and lack of was. No QB, no #1,2 Wr’s. Yet still lost 9 of their 13 games by 1 score or less. That’s pretty good D. Sunday will determine if Blowzo stays or goes, the rest doesn’t matter.

  23. adam from ny Says:

yeah with the history of health at our cb position it’s probably best to go restructure…and 3 nice pieces to rotate in depending on health…

dean and davis are technically in their prime now…

maybe they tweak a bit at LB, save money there, and re-surround old man/legend lavonte with new pieces around him and britt…

i think britt’s your starter next year…he looks ready – plays solid – and is built like a brick sh!thouse…

they’ve gotta add something at backer and edge

  24. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

I’m not sold on Britt. I bet the Bucs will draft another ILB in rounds 2-4. Even if LVD returns he can’t go forever and I am not overly impressed with SVD either.

He is now listed as DOUBTFUL on the injury report for this Sunday. He really hasn’t played very many snaps and he is already injured?

I wouldn’t count on him being the starter if he continues to be injury prone.

  25. Marine Buc Says:

    * “KJ Britt is now listed as DOUBTFUL”

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

“they’ve gotta add something at backer and edge”

    Agreed.

If we are able to re-sign Mike Evans than our first round pick will probably be an OLB/DE.

Shaq is shot and JTS is just a guy – same with A. Nelson.

If Mike Evans moves on then our first pick will probably be a WR. But an edge rusher will probably be the next pick.

  27. adam from ny Says:

yeah i’m actually “hoping” to be sold on britt…he looked good in green bay, but he’s known to be slow sideline to sideline…i’m just hoping he pans out…he should be ready, being in the system a few years now…fingers crossed…

sad to say shaq actually looks out of shape more than before…love shaq tho…

nelson probably makes more plays than jts…

and with white seemingly gone, lavonte needs help across the board…good thing he keeps drinking that youth juice…i need whatever he’s drinking…maybe he’ll play forever 🙂

  28. Badbucs Says:

KJ Brittle and slow. LB edge core should be top priority in draft. The genius pick method good for Diaby horrible foJTS in the 1st rd. WR is tough. Heel if you let Mike go but most likely dumb if overpay for the old man. I think you have to risk getting younger now. Cap will keep us mediocre for another year. Get some more young guys now and emerge out of hell.

  29. orlbucfan Says:

If Bucs cut JTS, they need to cut DWhite with him. Both ME13 and LVD deserve raises or whatever $$ Licht can come up with. I’ll be focused on Canales. He calls another dumbsh1t game, the Offense needs to run their own game plan. Who knows where the Glazers will be? Probably in Europe where they’re so hot to trot with their rich sports bros.

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

    Too bad about Britt.
I expect a big game for YaYa and SirVoncea tomorrow.
Godwin will join Evans in the 1,000 yard club.

Guess everyone has noticed that Dean and Davis are usually injured, when they are getting curbstomped by some WR.
In their defense- a pass rush would sure make their jobs alot easier.

As always- its all about Baker.
Im hoping his ribs have improved. I want to be celebrating the Bucs as NFC champions this time tomorrow.
If Baker can be Baker- we’ll be talking about the Eagles tomorrow night.

  31. Joe Says:

If Bucs cut JTS, they need to cut DWhite with him.

Bucs won’t have to cut Devin White. His contract expires when the Bucs next lose.

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Capt Tim

Yep. Dean and Carlton Hargreaves get a sprained Vagina nearly every game. Especially the ones where they get burned like toast.

  33. Bucs since 76 Says:

Ryan Jensen could be given an injury settlement saving dead cap money. His incentive would be tell him we would cut him if he doesn’t take it. They could also make him a offensive line coach which he is already doing.
