Bucs Interviewing Tight Ends Coach For Playcaller Gig

January 31st, 2024

“It’s called ‘due diligence,’ Mr. Glazer.”

Add another in-house candidate to the buffet of coaches interviewing for Tampa Bay’s open offensive coordinator job.

CBS is reporting that tight ends coach John Van Dam is getting his shot to impress Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles. Like 2023 coordinator Dave Canales, who bolted for the Panthers, Van Dam is an upbeat guy. But different from Canales, he’s a former backup quarterback — in college at Michigan State.

(Are the Bucs thinking of signing his former teammate, Kirk Cousins?)

Van Dam also has playcalling experience in college, at Lafayette and at Southern Illinois. He’s also been an assistant coach at Florida and Michigan, and at Alabama for two seasons. He’s been on the Bucs’ staff for five years.

New can. Same great taste!

    Yawn

  3. Tye Says:

Hey, John Van Dam, Are you interested in being our OC?

  4. Boss Says:

This is your new OC ladies……

no one else is coming, so it will take a while and 1/2 dozen turn downs before they offer him the gig

  5. dbbuc711 Says:

    Sounds interesting

  6. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

Wow, John (Claude) Van Dam as the OC. I like it.

  7. TomBucsFan Says:

He better be able to do a split between two logs.

  8. MF Bucs Says:

I wish they would hire someone already, I’m on pins and needles here!

    Better caption for that pic.

    ^^^^^^
What are you the actual boss of? The complaint committee? Is HC Grover your pen name?

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This multitude of candidates makes me feel like Todd has no idea of what he’s doing……
Don’t blame the coaches that left to go with Canales….Bowles passed them over last year when he hired Canales, and they would probably be canned by the new OC.

We need to get this hire done ASAP.

And… if anyone is a fan of Christmas Vacation…..I’m saying it like Margo said it…….”TODD”!!!

  12. Steven007 Says:

Joe in Michigan, his last name is Hogg.

  13. Davenport Says:

At this point, its become a joke. A parade of losers whose only qualification is that they will take the job.

Nobodys and re-tread failures doesn’t scream excellence.

  14. Proudbucsfan Says:

Hey I’ve got an idea, Why don’t you call the Offense and the Defense TODD ? We don’t need coordinators. Let’s find out how that works

  15. Winny Testaverde Says:

Boss Lady has spoken. Now get back to organizing parties to peddle your multi-level marketing junk, Missy!

  16. Seanbuc76 Says:

I thought Alex van pelt made the most sense what happened to him?

  17. BootyLover Says:

He doesn’t pay, he doesn’t punk, he just wants to eat.

  18. CleanHouse Says:

Normally I would not be the one saying something positive on here, but it sounds like the guy has a pretty solid pedigree, being a QB and working at Alabama. Also he was with us for a Super Bowl and some pretty good offenses.
He’s seen what worked and what didn’t from several perspective and he has called plays. Which is more than Canales could say last year. Maybe he’s a good coach. A diamond in the rough. You never know with these type of things.

    At this point, who cares?

We have Bowles, and they are determined to stick with him. The front office seems happy w him so let him pick who he wants.

    This is the direction now.

    I think Bowles sucks

  19. CleanHouse Says:

Well it was almost positive! Lol

  20. TomBucsFan Says:

The Bucs didn’t hire a OC until mid-February last offseason so I am not that worried.

  21. Onetrickpony Says:

If he was qualified why wasn’t he offered it when they were looking around and before they hired DC ?

There’s an interview process. You interview all the guys you’re interested in before making a decision… duh. Van Pelt was only interviewed 2 days ago, and still is probably one of the leading candidates. We’re not going to get an OC hire until next week, meanwhile you’ll be hearing more names you don’t know.

People need to get a grip. On one hand, you have people who don’t understand how an interview process works. On the other hand you’ve got people who are negative about any candidate whose name they haven’t heard before. Guess what, there are a lot of qualified coaches out there who aren’t well known and just need an opportunity. Who knew the name Dave Canales, outside of Seattle fans, before this season?

I apologize if I’m making too much sense for some of you.

  23. Scott Says:

Has there been any word about interviewing Eric Bieniemy?

  24. RBUC Says:

Media that covers the Browns are saying 1)Alex Van Pelt was only OC in title and he didn’t call plays in Cleveland 2) the decision to move on from Van Pelt and 2 other coaches came from upper management above the Head Coach 3)the reason was because they felt is voice was getting stale and few young players showed progress.

  25. Kalind Says:

Pull the trigger already! Anyone else notice The Senior Bowl is going on? Might be nice to have an OC THERE FOR THAT!

  26. Drew Says:

Bucs would have been better off ditching Bowles and promoting Canales. Would leave them in a much better spot having to find a defensive coordinator than an entire offensive coaching staff. Canales is the future, and he should’ve been our future. He also helps us keep Baker a gazillion times more than Bowles. Who’s more important to the Bucs, Bowles or Baker? That’s an easy one.

You know what you have with Bowles. He showed his incompetence at the end of the Lions game. I can guarantee Canales doesn’t give up there. This guy is HUNGRY. Bowles is on his last breath. And after seeing meathead Campbell in the nfc ship, he probably goes for it and doesn’t convert on 4th. Dave will be missed.

  27. unbelievable Says:

No one seems to want Bieniemy.

Guess everyone knows it was Andy Reid behind that offensive production (similar to Arians and Leftwich)

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

This doesn’t sound good why didn’t they interview him last year? We still need an OL coach, wide receivers coach and another running backs coach.

  29. RBUC Says:

Word is Bieniemy is a poor communicator and is verbally harsh to players

  30. kaimaru Says:

    @RBUC

Yup, he hurts some professional athletes feelings. I mean how much harsher can you be than Arians?

  31. Winny Testaverde Says:

Just read an article describing “Can Do” Canales is a former porn addict, boozer and adulterer. Now he declares cured & saved. Good riddens…not trustworthy and always over-selling himself. Well played, David Tepper.

  32. RBUC Says:

    @kaimaru

I hear you the difference thou is BA has lapped the block quite a few times and put away quite a few more checks than Bieniemy😁!

  33. BUCman Says:

I’m not concerned about the coaches we lost. Not one of them is worth a nickel. What is concerning is that we are not likely to replace them with any worth a penny. 😞

  34. sasquatch Says:

When can we stop this permanent moderation doghouse? Joe? Kinda ridiculous.

  35. Drew Says:

If he has a few good kumite karate moves. Hire him.

  36. SB~LV Says:

    😂

  37. Dave Pear Says:

LOL, Todd will eventually hire a middle school football coach from Micanopy to do the job because no one else would ever want the job, and in Micanopy they’re all into what Micanopy is famous for, so unable to differentiate.

  38. Dave Pear Says:

LOL, Todd will eventually hire a middle school football coach from some small town to do the job because no one else would ever want the job.

  39. Tbbucs3 Says:

I am convinced that we’ll be interviewing candidates up until week 1 of next season

  40. Free Will Says:

I think the bucs should interview kliff kingsbury as well for o.c. He was baker Mayfield college coach when he attended Texas tech, so there’s familiarity there!

We’ve been interviewing less than a week. How long do you think this is supposed to take? This is the usual irrational negativity over Bowles.

There are reasons why nobody has hired him for open OC positions. I’m not sure he’d be a good personality match for Bowles.

  43. Tbbucs3 Says:

The problem with that logic sasquatch is most of the top candidates are flying off the shelves….so the Bucs are being left with the scraps the more interviews they take.

This goes back to another point I’ve made. People assume that if it’s not a top name, it’s not a good coach (scraps). There are lots of good coaches. This is about fit. The best coach for the job is the one who fits the players and personalities on the coaching staff in addition to the philosophies. Monte Kiffin used to dig guys up from college ranks all the time. You just have to know where to look. Bowles did fine in finding the right fit with Canales after interviewing like 10 others. I certainly understand the concern. If he waits around, he may lose one of the guys he wants, but if you rush a decision, you may also end up regretting it.

  45. BillyBucco Says:

Please look up what OC hires from last year that were supposedly TOP SHELF did.
It’s not like 8 teams blew the roof off and we missed out.
The negativity from you posters should win some kind of award.

  46. vadertime Says:

Bowles is an idiot. He cannot run this team. You could hire a monkey from the Tampa Zoo to run this team and it would do just fine. Arians build this team and the GOAT gave it cultural unity. Bowles inherited something that was build by other people. It doesn’t matter who is OC, but as long as Bowles is HC, we will never make it to the championship. Fire Bowles. Restock the coaches from top to bottom. Give Baker a 3 year contract. Get Winfield a lucrative contract and get Evans back. Go Bucs.
