Baker Mayfield: I Like Mike!

January 21st, 2024

Props for his No. 1 receiver.

Earlier tonight, Mike Evans said if he returns to the Bucs — and he wants to — he wants Baker Mayfield back throwing the rock.

Mayfield had mutual words for Evans in his postgame presser.

“The guy is a stud,” Mayfield said of Evans. “He hasn’t regressed at all. Everyone wants to talk about his age but he had one of his best years.

“He makes my life easy. … If I’m back, I want Mike back. That guy is a stud.”

And Mayfield made it clear he wants to return to Tampa Bay. He sounds like from a football standpoint and a life standpoint he has found a home.

“I love this group,” Mayfield said. “I’ve said that all year but it is authentic. I mean that. It would mean a lot to me to bring back key pieces to get this back together and to get it in Year 2 of the system.

“You can make huge strides. I would love that.”

The trick is, Mayfield added, the Bucs want both him and Evans back, and others. Lavonte David is also a free agent. So too is Devin White but Joe is convinced White has played his last snap with the Bucs.

“Who knows how it will play out?,” Mayfield said. “Can’t say enough about this organization and the opportunity they gave me this year. I’m just thankful.”

The way Joe looks at it, if it takes re-signing Mayfield to lure Evans back, then that is a trigger that needs to be pulled.

Let Evans walk. Give the money to a pass rusher

  2. HC Grover Says:

Give it up they LOST! Putting Lipstick on a Pig is a loser.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

I know this will trigger the Baker Bois, but it’s a serious question…

Has Mike ever said anything bad about any of his QBs?

I’m pretty sure he’s on record at one point saying he wants Mike Glennon as his starting QB, that he’s a STUD, the best ever, etc.

That’s not a knock at Baker, it’s just that Mike is a nice guy, and says this about everyone.

  4. King C Says:

Baker’s agent will ask for 4 years $180m. That’s the going rate

  5. Surfing the Waivers Says:

Baker is going to get many offers this offseason.

    Whatever happens, thanks brother.

It wasn’t always perfect but you were a dawg.

    Bucs forever!

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

I believe Mike will resign with the Bucs. Chris Godwin may be traded for thought.

  7. WyomingJoe Says:

If Baker feels like he’s found a home, he’ll sign for 3 years at 105M plus incentives. And that’s way below the going rate but hometown friendly.

    ——–
Uh uh…….”going rate” is 4years $230Mill. Mayfield will get it somewhere. He out played Joe Burrow a $50Mill/year man each time he faced him with Cleveland when he was healthy.

  9. Jmarkbuc Says:

    I appreciated Baker’s 9-8 season.

Bout he’s not a 40m/yr QB. That wouldn’t be prudent.

Licht better act like he’s got good sense.

  10. David Says:

They absolutely need to bring both back. Get another center and guard, and this team is starting to look very good on offense.

Defense needs another edge rusher and a linebacker to replace White… BRITT is not the full-time guy for the job

  11. Bojim Says:

Want them both. Don’t forget you have Godwin next year. 😉

  12. King C Says:

Baker slots in next to Daniel Jones, not Joe Burrow obviously

  13. Todd Says:

Baker should get the geno smith rate 3 years 75 million

We can’t pay Evans 25 million per year just can’t we can offer him 15-18 million per year for 3 years

Winfield 5 years 17 million per year

  14. Bosch Says:

Not just Evan’s. Resign Mayfield and you keep Lavonte and Winfield too.

Nothing about professional sports pay scale is “prudent” but that is what Baker is going to get on the open market. Be “prudent” and have Trask or Rod Munch as Tampa QB next year.

  16. firethecannons Says:

we would benefit from a stout center, and guard, Mauch needs to bulk up–he looks like a high school kid

  17. Let ‘em bake Says:

Lock up baker long term ( 6 years) and spread cost out over those years. Pay him 15 mil next year. Back load the deal. He said today sacrifices would have to be made ( which means he’ll make some) . Nice signing bonus ( not counted against cap). Mike gets his, they beef up the trenches.

  18. Conner50 Says:

Cut Shaq,Jensen,Gage, and Davis. Should be able to resign LVD,Evans,Winfield, and Mayfield then. Licht and Greenberg will get it right

  19. Greg Says:

Well…if he wants Mike, he will have to take less money so we can sign Mike. Doubt that will happen.

  20. BakerFan Says:

Hopefully Canales gets hired for a HC, because that was the biggest piss pore game calling I have ever witnessed.

As well this defense could not make a major impact at all.

Evans and Baker should pack their bags if the coaching does not change. I know players play the game and have to execute but they can only play as good as a game strategy is. I was expecting a slew of 30 to 50 yard pass plays we got what maybe 3?

Why is it never Mike needs to take less money?

  22. Nate Says:

Look, Baker Mayfield this season has not surprised me. I’ve seen him do it in Cleveland. I’m not sure what the morbid man love obsession with Trask is about, Baker showed this year he was a top 10 QB 28 TD to 10 INT. You have to understand the amount of OC’s and playbooks he’s been through prior to Tampa, which can take some time to get more familiar, plus I can see he was already starting to get comfortable with the offense several weeks ago. He was playing fantastic, and was enough for me to know I want to see more of him and a 4 year deal. I think the Defense could have been better in the 2nd half. I don’t like the fact Bowles makes the calls on D because I think it takes away from his coaching. 1 of those INT was on Mayfield, the one final drive was on him, but they were in desperation mode at that point. The one in 1st half was on the WR. Keep Mayfield!

  23. Nate Says:

I think Mayfield is only going to get better at this point.. I think next season they could easily be 11-6 or even 12-5 if they can manage to improve via FA and NOT get rid of Evans.

  24. Beeej Says:

“He makes my life easy. He did all year. He did it today, over and over,” Mayfield said of Evans. “To get everybody back, there have to be sacrifices made. This team’s about winning. We have a group of guys who are all about that. If I’m back, I want Mike back.”

  25. DBS Says:

BakerFan. When did he have time to even throw for long passes? The offense line and Running Backs failed all day. They were leaving People uncovered to blitz him. He was lucky to get what he did.

    ……………………………………………………………
I agree somewhat, why did boy wonder Canales devise some plays sliding a man behind the edge rusher, like on the TD screen play. I am not really sold on Canales. But I can live with interceptions if you are throwing 50 yards on 3rd down testing the defense, it is just like a punt.

  27. Beeej Says:

We had roughly 1/3 of our drives ruined by sacks from unblocked rushers. Were the blocking assignments Baker’s fault? no idea whatsoever

  28. Proudbucsfan Says:

I’m kind of upset that Palmer was burning his guy the whole game and he didn’t get the ball. The fastest guy on the field

  29. Brandon Says:

Licht should be fired for his wasted 2nd round picks… hilarious statement. Winfield, Donovan Smith, Marpet, Carlton Davis, Goedeke, Ronald Jones were 2nd round picks. He may have done even better in round 3 with Godwin, Dean, Cappa, R White, Diaby, and Mike Edwards. Jason Licht is a draft master. His draft record is among the best in the NFL since he became GM. Three possible HOF players in Evans, Wirfs, Winfield. Other great players like Vea, Kancey, as well as many solid starters for us. Get a clue.

  30. Trask To The Future Says:

The O-Line needs an overhaul. They were pathetic on completely missing rushers. How on earth do you not account for their #1 rusher and let him come unblocked?

  31. FlaGuy21 Says:

Baker Mayfield is imo our modern day version of Jeff Garcia!!!

  32. John H Says:

Baker played great. he elevated the team. What i saw from the last 2 games were some serious dropped passes. Today, the O-line let Baker get hurried & hit TOO much. Mayfield got out of a couple would-be sacks himself too.
Not sure if the O-Line coach did enough to prepare the blockers for the Lions’ many blitzes.

This was not on Mayfield at all.

Bottom line, defense did not get it done. they just could not make stops.

  33. Rick Says:

The Bucs beat just a couple teams with a winning record this season, anybody and everybody was whipping the Eagles towards the end of the season. This was a mediocre Bucs team with a mediocre coach and QB.

  34. heyjude Says:

Evans and Baker are both stand-up guys, humble. I hate to see Evan leave but the Texans, Cowboys, and others will most likely reach out. This could have been his last game with us. I sure hope not. If he leaves, it will hurt the Bucs.

  35. Bucs Guy Says:

    And Godwin?
Love him, but he hasn’t connected with Baker on the field it seems. He has one year left on his contract and I don’t see the Bucs re-signing him due to money. Trade him for a 2nd and a day 3 pick. Draft his replacement with the 2nd round pick.

  36. Bucfan Says:

Hire a D/C. The defense lost the game yesterday. Looking back this season, how many loses were due to coaching? At least 5!
