Updated Bucs 2024 Draft Status

December 4th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

The Bucs’ quest to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 draft took a hit last night.

The Bucs’ season-saving win over the Stinking Panthers raised Tampa Bay’s record to 5-7. But keeping the Bucs one game out of first place in the horrid NFC South wasn’t all warm and fuzzies.

Per the website Tankathon.com, which calculates the following year’s draft order after each NFL game, the Bucs are now own the No. 10 slot in April’s first round if the season were to end this morning.

Last week the Bucs were No. 7. That’s prime range to either pick a quarterback or to go get one by trading up.

At No. 7 with so many good quarterbacks coming out, a trade up may be unnecessary — or the ransom might not be steep. At No. 10? There is a chance five quarterbacks could go in the first 10 since there are so many teams needing a quarterback in the worst way.

If the Bucs have to trade up for their quarterback from No. 10, the cost may be steeper.

Keep winning Baker! You have a lot more supporters than many of the sorry fans on this site think.

  2. Dave Pear Says:

Jameis Winston. Josh Freeman. Trent Dilfer. Vinny Testaverde.

    Mike Glennon. Shaun King.

Just say no to Bucs drafted quarterbacks actually playing well for the Bucs. Ain’t ever gonna happen.

  3. Bosch Says:

Dave Pear hit the nail on head. Bucs organization has proven incapable of drafting and developing a franchise QB. The Bucs formula is to build the talent then plug in a proven QB on the backside of his career. You know. Brad Johnson or Tom Brady. Knowing who you are Glazers, includes admitting your failures.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Chicago is throwing a celebration since they own the Panthers pick.

With that said … the Bucs barely beat the worst team in the NFL, at home.

Doubtful they win another game this year, and almost certainly will not be favored again this year, short of injuries to other teams.

  5. Tye Says:

Hardest PASS ever on drafting qb in 1st round…..
Bucs history tells us that is the beginning of 5 years of misery! No thanks!…

  6. CAbucsfan Says:

Bucs drafted Steve Young from the USFL supplemental draft and that turned out great SMH

  7. Dan the Bucs fan Says:

We got the win today with a lot of defensive starters out. We will beat Atlanta next week and be on top of the division. We have never drafted a Qb worth keeping. Stick with Mayfield on a cheap contract and keep building the team. We are not that far away. We get a lot of cap space back Brady drops off. Go get a pass rusher, at one oline help, and some speed at receiver. When we can get to the other teams Qb a little, run the ball just average, and hsve a downfield burner then we are going be contenders.

To rebuild now with the players we have would be foolish. One good draft and we would be really good.

  8. Pewter power Says:

Licht is too much of a coward to trade up and gamble on a quarterback

Hey licht no risk it no biscuit. Go get a quarterback. The stands will be empty until you do. At some point Glazers have to say get a quarterback or a new job

  9. J Says:

I’m curious if there are any Glaziers thinking, deep down ….”please stay healthy, and just lose the rest.”

  10. FortMyersDave Says:

Rod, Bucs will probably be favored over the Saints by 2 or so, perhaps even 3 or 4 if Jameis is their starter as the Saints really are not any better than the Bucs right now with a coach that is about as inept as Bowles. Still cannot fathom Bucs being only 2-point dogs in the ATL, just checked Vegas Insider and the line shrunk from 2.5 and the moneyline is down to -125 for the ATL from -135 signaling early money is on the Bucs. Unless the ATL had some sort of bad injury happen up in NY, I do not know why the early money is going on Tampa.

The Bucs’ quest to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 draft

Joe, did this come from someone inside 1 Buc Place or is it literary prose?

  12. Lowest Common Denominator Says:

All of the “Bucs have never drafted a franchise QB and therefore should never try to draft one again” dummies always crack me up.

I bet each and every one of you are also helmet scouters and believed you should never draft a QB from Ohio State until CJ Stroud came along.

Just because something has yet to happen isn’t proof that it never will happen.

  13. ATLBuc Says:

We should draft a quarterback only after finding out if we need one. If we do, are we going to have another quarterback competition again and anoint Mayfield winner again!

  14. Rod Munch Says:

FortMyersDave – You could be right on the Saints game, depending on how both team play out. However the Saints still have a legit good defense – their issue as been their God-awful offense when Carr is in there. If you want the Bucs to win, you want Carr continuing to play, with Winston, they’ll actually score points – and if he’s not coming into every game down multiple scores, that is very dangerous.

If things go very poorly for the Bucs, and look completely hopeless these next few weeks, that should signal that they’ll beat the Jags – because bad Bucs teams beat top AFC teams at home late in the season. Although, it’s normally a team from up north, so maybe that trend won’t hold true.

we need a new rook QB we do not need a win over the Panthers–get our priorities in order!!!!!

    ———

I’d be fine not drafting someone if the greatest QB of all time suddenly becomes available. If that falls into our lap again, I’d certainly be for it.

Meanwhile, skipping a new QB to keep a middling midget. No thanks.

Actually I don’t mean that, I don’t think he’s a really a midget, it’s just fun to say. Don’t believe me, say it out loud a few dozen times and see if you don’t have a blast.

  17. godlovesbucs Says:

    Gotta get a franchise QB.
We know baker is not one.
Find out if Trask is or not (probably no but who knows?)
Draft a potential next year (Jordan Travis? Bo nix? Daniels?)
Get a new offensive minded coach.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

GodLovesBucs … ‘Find out if Trask is or not (probably no but who knows?). Draft a potential (QB) next year.’

Bucs struggled mightily to beat the now 1-11 Panthers yesterday with Mayfield at the helm. That was an embarrassment on national TV. I could care less about winning the NFC South crown this season; it’s obvious this team can’t even begin to compete in the playoffs.

We desperately need a much better QB than Baker to build around. Kyle Trask may not be the answer, but it borders on coaching malpractice to never find out if he’s got what it takes to lead this team. We lose him after next season … a 2nd round pick TOTALLY down the drain if we never give him a chance.

Todd Bowles & Dave Canales have both lost any support for them that I still felt. Their stubbornness in sticking with Mayfield will get them both fired at the end of this season, but screw us for years to come. Stop this illusion that winning the NFC South will mean a successful season & start building for the future.

As I have said from the beginning. BM is < JW.

Welcome to the JW (BM?) experience on Drugs.

    Go Bucs!!!

    #Start-Kyle

  21. WiseCrack Says:

For the record… I wanted Baker to be awesome as I stated in my Crack Wise post that got me 6 months in the cooler.

Fact is, I am ok with Patty Cake Patty Cake so long as he can make my favorite team full of JOY!!!

Fact is, I experience more joy losing 200 BUCS playing Texas Holdem like the Bills players do after a win to my boy #Wolfgang Poker.

Just saying, Baker can secure a place in my hardest of hearts if he leads my boy hood dream of a team to a HUGE win and eventual PLAYOFF berth next week.

Yes, if Baky can beat the Dirty Birds next week. We BUCS NATION will win a 3rd consecutive Division title!!!

ALTHOUGH, I think Trask will be the one leading us to PLAYOFF glory……. Wait, that means….. “In a world…”

  22. HC Grover Says:

The Battle of the Bums yesterday featured 2 half baked 1st round picks. Both were awful but one was just a bit worse than the other. NO to picking a QB in the first round. Irrational optimism after a squeaker over the worst team in the NFL. What about Winston too. Nope….Falcons will win this awful division.

  23. UKBuccaneer Says:

    WiseCrack Says:

As I have said from the beginning. BM is < JW.

    ————————

Look at their career stats. BM is JW with fewer interceptions.

  24. Nope Says:

Baker Mayfield is straight trailer park garbage, like so many of his followers. I used to love the bucks, now I relish in the fact that you reap what you’ve sewn. No doubt you’re squat little insurance salesman of a qb knows he is the fall guy who nets a high draft pick. And Broyles just does like he’s told. Btw free shoes fans…ROLL TIDE!!!

  25. Hodad Says:

Bucs are right where Vegas said they’d be at 6.5 wins. Not sure they win another game. They’ll end up with a top ten pick. Right now the teams picking above them have QB’s they drafted high. So a good QB will certainly be in reach.

  26. WyomingJoe Says:

Guys, the Cult of Kyle meeting starts in 20 minutes. Don’t be late and don’t bring any stupid ideas like actually starting Trask or blowing your 1st round pick on a QB.

Keep winning Baker because it’s driving your haters crazy.

  27. Jonzey Says:

I like Michael Penix QB from Washington, he would be the one and he is from Tampa, graduated from Tampa Tech

  28. Bobby Says:

Yep, just as I have been saying over and over in these comments. I’m going to go further with it. To me, a playoff game where you get embarrassed and blown out is not worth it. Plus what comes with a playoff game is the Bucs keep this same poor coaching staff we have. Who continue to force round pegs into square holes this season. So all on here including one of the Joes who are pushing to win and have a playoff game. That is only going to make this coming rebuild take even longer to get this team back to SB contention. So this offseason when we are all on here complaining about how we are not even close to one of the premium players in next year’s draft. Remember now, remember last week. Remember going forward. Lets say the Bucs win 2 more games and then let’s say they don’t go to the playoffs in that scenario. How stupid was it to win and lose draft status considering the coach will probably be fired and it’s going to be harder to attract other coaches to come here when we are looking at a team needing to rebuild but has a midd 1st round pick. This is just frustrating going forward. Happy Monday everyone. Go Bucs!!

  29. danang Says:

Excellent point. I have been reading JBF all season and cannot believe its utter failure to address why the Bucs have kept their 2nd-round QB for 3 seasons and not yet played him in a single game with the starters, not even in a losing season like this one to assess upcoming draft needs. I see not just COACHING malpractice at play here; also at play is ORGANIZATIONAL malpractice and JOURNALISTIC malpractice.

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs need a Center, a TE, a Safety, another RB, another Receiver, another DE, another LB – all priorities over a college QB – Bucs TE’s didn’t even get 1 target yesterday.

  31. Voice of Truth Says:

Anyone that actually watched the game knows BM is not good at all

We barely, just barely eeked out a victory against a HORRIFIC team

McClown got ME to 1k yards, my grandson could too

This staff is a total joke and so is our “playoff” hopes

So we beat up on the sorry NFC sour, I mean south and get rocked by every team with a winning record and we are to be happy???

Wyoming – take off the rose colored glasses and face the truth

  32. UKBuccaneer Says:

If ‘draft status’ actually meant anything, then we’d not be having this conversation. We had a first overall pick which we burned on JW. BM himself is a first overall pick.

So what’s the guarantee that we get a franchise QB at 5, 10 or 20?

  33. danang Says:

“No. 7. That’s prime range to pick a quarterback.”

Ever heard of Bryce Young? Zach Wilson? Trey Lance? Mac Jones? Jameis Winston? And, yes, Baker Mayfield?

  34. Ed Says:

Josh Allen was 7th player picked in NFL Draft
Brock Purdy had 200 players picked before him
Zak Prescott was 4th rounder, 130 players picked before him
Justin Herbert was 6th players picked in NFL Draft
Jalen Hurts 53rd player picked in the 2nd round
Jordan Love was 26th player picked in NFL draft
Sam Howell was 144th player picked in NFL draft

You don’t have to pick #1 or #3 to get talented quarterbacks. Its how they are coached, the system that the offense runs and how motivated they are to be good players.

Don’t tell me because the Bucs have drafted duds in the past they can’t find a QB in a draft that experts say is the best class of QB’s in years

  35. RGA Says:

WyomingJoe, are you watching the same games as the rest of us are? Keep winning Baker, really?

  36. SB~LV Says:

So win the division and each division rival will be cherry picking our wish list just before our pick

  37. Jeff Says:

Would take 3 first round picks to move up to #3.

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

This Buc teams has to many needs indeed. We need to solidify our O and D lines guys. Don’t know if you noticed, But we cannot stop the run or the pass. And we need a QB for the future. Baker is OK. But he’s Helter Skelter, hit and miss So go figure. Based on our past, we win a SB every 10 yrs or so. Start the rebuild.

  39. Conner50 Says:

WyomingJoe says “keep winning baker” 5-7 isn’t a winning record fyi, I like mayfield but get with reality and realize he’s not the guy

  40. Conner50 Says:

Start Trask already mayfield is ok but not great.

  41. Allbuccedup Says:

No worries give them time we will move up a few more slots.

  42. Conner50 Says:

California Dreaming says no we’re the Bucs…
    Unfortunately your right

  43. Bucsmarley Says:

Wyoming Joe is 100% bakers lover
You are not watching football if you truly believe he’s a good qb. Capable backup nothing more. Keeping winning baker😂😂. He has lost many more than he’s won. Still can’t believe you’re not willing to see what our 2 nd rnd pick can do lol. So glad you’re not our GM. I’m willing to bet that our 3rd string (Wofford) can win more games than baker. Stellar game by him yesterday for sure lol a 59% passer rating is what you are looking for. Please stay in Wyoming so us realists can be honest at what we are looking at. A dis’s functioning team with terrible coaching. I’m sure if you took a poll more people are ready to see what’s behind curtain #2 than everything we have seen with baker.

  44. mark2001 Says:

Just watching the Bucs in the process of pulling 2022 once again….and in the process, another lower first round draft pick and another hollow four team division championship. In the meantime, the youngest team in the league, the Packers are tooling up for another run. Even the Bears could have a Sam Wyche Bucs 1995 type draft with the picks they will have in this draft. So sad for my friends and ex-neighbors in Tampa Bay. It is a Bucs life.

  45. Costa Rica John Says:

Jordan Love sat 3 years and is starting to look good. Maybe that’s the route for Trask too.
