Todd Bowles Wins, Escapes Doomsday Scenario

December 10th, 2023

Survivalist.

Cancel the PODS reservation. Return the bubble wrap. Put the résumé PowerPoint in draft.

Todd Bowles’ head coaching career was on the line today in Atlanta and Bowles walked out of the hostile Atlanta Falcons dome with a win, a smile and a share of first place in the NFC South.

Bowles earned it. The Bucs certainly played Bowles’ brand of football. Run, run, run, even when it doesn’t work. Stay patient and safe on offense and hope the opportunistic and talented defense finds turnovers and your run game wears down the opponent.

The Bowles defense sold out to stop the run without Vita Vea and Devin White and pulled it off against an old school running team with stud running backs. This was Bowles Ball at it’s best (worst?).

The Bucs hammering at the run game early and often seemed to soften up the Falcons defense, and Tampa Bay running back Chase Edmonds had his best game as a Buccaneers (8 carries for 40 yards) and Rachaad White closed the game well after a miserable first half. He finished with 25 carries for 102 yards.

And the Bucs kicked two impressive field goals. Bowles loves field goals.

This was the kind of football Team Glazer signed up for when it hired Bowles, so Joe has to think this was one hell of a survival game for Bowels when it comes to job security.

Can Bowles and the Bucs close the season 3-1 and finish 9-8? That likely wins them the division and parks them well ahead of most experts’ expectations.

  1. Show Me the TDs Says:

We won despite our “Baker” anchor dragging us down all day.

  2. Red86 Says:

Great job Baker for being responsible for 3 tds. It’s exactly what I’ve been ranting for you to do.

  3. Tye Says:

    Defense is still suspect!…
How you going to give up 15 points to a division rival in the 4th quarter…

  4. Miller5252 Says:

They got LUCKY! Dang near gave it away. The staff needs gone. Should have had 35 points today but for some reason Baker can’t find anyone open. The game was horrible to watch except the last 6 minutes. Too much talent to be this crappy all day long.

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Why do the Bucs only play to win in the last 3 minutes?

  6. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Thank you Baker Mayfield!!

  7. NE Fan Says:

Bucs still alive thanks to Ridder and a FG kicker that was 24 for 25 until today. White didn’t break 100yds rushing at least Baker got his 100 yds. Pathetic. Poor Bucs fans have to endure Bowles another week.

  8. bucsfaninOregon Says:

    Note to all Traskers: STFU!

  9. Adrnagy Says:

    You dumb.
    New offensive coordinator.
    New Qb
    New offensive line.
No veteran leadership in defense (jpp,suh..etc etc )
    Young defense players

Are your harping on Bowles ?? Stop drinking toilet water.

  10. Old Sombrero Says:

Imagine that…TE production (TD) and an effective run game and they win. Not a coincidence.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

They own their destiny. GB. Jax. Carolina and NO. Go get ‘em, Bowles. If you can earn it, I’ll pay respect.

  12. Buc50 Says:

Baker sucks and I’m not a Trasker. We will not win the division and we will suck again next year.

  13. BucsFan81 Says:

This team still sucks and it doesn’t who wins this division they will get blown out in the playoffs

  14. Beeej Says:

Say what you will about the guy, he’s a money player

  15. Bob Dee Says:

Genuinely terrifying, exhilarating mediocre football. This is why we love the Bucs, at least as long as Bowles and Baker are running the show.
I’ve definitely picked the right season to get over from the UK to watch the last 3 games of the year in person.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Now we win NFC South…again. Bowles and Baker will Be Baaaack. Beat the Pack and on to the Super Bowl!!!!

  17. Adrnagy Says:

    I forgot to add …
    Salary cap.

  18. Dlavid Says:

Well … the misery continues ! We are still a losing team !!

  19. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

It’s a W and sitting alone in first place. Jobs saved, for now. I’ll take it, for now.

  20. firethecannons Says:

lol! No Joe they cannot and will not (win 3-1) because it is Todd Bowles team. they almost lost this–down to the last second

  21. D-Rome Says:

    JTS should be cut

  22. Adrnagy Says:

To all you so call “bucs “ fan go and drink toilet water to refresh yourself. Good or bad … go Bucs !

  23. JD12 Says:

Very ugly game today. Kudos to Baker for making plays when he had too. I still don’t think anyones job is safe across the board but it does let folks fight for another week and make their case to stay. Still very clear that this defense can’t make plays and this offense is just completely lost. It is very close to a “blow it all up” situation and rebuild. The bright side is that your division is ass and you still have a chance at the playoffs. None of this makes sense but hey, we are on to Green Bay.

  24. Tucker Says:

We just watched two teams play hot potatoe with the win and it saves bowels? That was a rough game to watch from start to finish two very bad teams who neither one seemed to want to win the game but hey first place in the worst division yay.

  25. Jason Says:

So Bowles’ job is safe because some Young Ho had an off day?
    Got it.👍

  26. Couch Fan Says:

Why should “traskers” stfu? Was this some great game for Baker in your opinion? LMAO. You should stfu and stop embarrissing yourself.

    Bye bye Kyle

  28. Buc1987 Says:

    Bowles loves FG’s…..LMAO Joe.

  29. Blue Diamond Says:

I was not impressed with our offense, or our quarterback today. Was impressed with the defense. Still need to see Trask for a couple 3 games.

  30. VATom Says:

It’s only temporary. They can hardly football their way out of a paper bag.

  31. HC Grover Says:

Thank you Atlanta. Tampa Bay Desperados could go all the way….as long as they sit Plan 9. He was the weak link. Pack and Jax and we are in!!!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Looking at the schedules — the Saints have the easiest remaining schedule, the Falcons have the 2nd easiest, and the Bucs easily have the hardest remaining schedule.

The Bucs will legit have to win this division if they win it. I’m not sure they can afford to lose any of their remaining of games.

  33. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Couch fan

How mad were you when Baker threw the game winning Td pass?

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Whats wrong with wanting to see what the 2nd round QB can do?

You get labeled a “Trasker” whatever that means…

    Baker sucked!

  35. NYbucsfan Says:

He is terrible!!!!! Thought of him on the sideline makes me puke.

  36. UKBuccaneer Says:

Who’s the best interior linemen in the draft?

  37. Couch Fan Says:

Just a little bit. I would of been more mad if I spilled my beer. 144 yards btw. Baker was pathetic!!

  38. LA48 Says:

We beat a lousy club. As the analyst said on the broadcast, “Neither of these teams look like playoff teams.”

All this win does is (1) screw our draft order and (2) “vindicate” Bowles’ antiquated, ineffectual philosophy of run the ball and rely on defense to save your a$s like it’s 1998.

  39. Sketch813 Says:

How can anyone in here comment the defense didn’t make plays??? What game are you watching. Baker and this offense was trash until the 2nd half. The Defense kept us in and they had opportunistic plays. I swear some of our fans drink too much Big storm.

  40. Ricki Says:

Hey Joe, fix Bowels or somebody wont let you ask questions anymore at one Bucs place

  41. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ I’m not sure they can afford to lose any of their remaining of games.”

Rod, you act like the Saints and Falcons are good teams, they are trash too. But the Bucs are still better and still have an automatic win with the Panthers. A win over the Saints and Panthers is all it will take.

  42. bucsince79 aka bumanner Says:

Baker was throwing the ball with to much pepper & high, however, he came up clutch when the game was on the line… White is the best catching RB the BUCs have ever had!!! JUKE KING WHITE

  43. Couch Fan Says:

An automatic win? Man you are not smart at all. There is no automatic wins for the Bucs. Absolutely asinine. We barely beat them the first game at home!!

  44. Red86 Says:

Got to admit I didn’t think we would win. Only 84 yards passing in the 4th quarter isn’t something to brag about. Baker seem to ignore Mike Evans by observing the gamecast. He’s sooo extreme in who he target. Finally, stepped up and score in all quarters for a win. Sad this took this long, but a win is a win!

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

Bowles survives for the rest of the season. Still, our Defense truly sucks overall. We simply cannot stop anybody. And that is every single game. No hurries, no pressure and very few sacks. Seems like we were doing average until Joe tryon hit the field……..

  46. Show Me the TDs Says:

The Baker “C” students are back at it again. If you’re happy with 14/29, 48%, 144 yards, 5.0 avg, 2 TDs, then you are a loser.

  47. orlbucfan Says:

Well, so-called ‘Buc’ fans, this is classic Cardiac Bucs. Players won this one. I’m not sure what I think of Canales. He’s an idiot. What, no throws to ME13 and Godzilla14? When BM threw to them, he was way off. Interesting game as NO HOLDING calls. It’s long overdue to get rid of that as a penalty. I am glad Otton caught the winning score. He’s a good player with great hands. So, all you fake fans, how about screw off!

  48. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Couch fan

Dude the Panthers literally have the worst offense in the league since the 76 Bucs.

Not sure if your aware but the Saints played atrocious today and won by 22 points. Yes thats an automatic win.

  49. Oz Len Says:

traskers” stfu” I approve of this statement.

  50. Beeej Says:

Run defense was better, which I attribute to DW not playing

  52. Jmarkbuc Says:

Baker was an inaccurate mess for 58 minutes of the game..
It took everything they had, and Koo missing twice ….

To beat the Falcons. Not the Niners.

The whole team needs an overhaul. It has nothing going on. Except a punter, and 13.

    Almost sad to win.

  53. Red86 Says:

Run open up the pass. Pass open up the run. Great job R. White and Edmond.

  54. NE Fan Says:

And yet another garbage win over a garbage team. High Five Bucs fans. Can you say arse whipped if not for two turnovers and a choking kicker

  55. Davenport Says:

In what world is this a job saving win?
Atlanta lost this game, Bucs didn’t win it.

Nothing has changed except, now we stand to lose a top 10 draft pick in each round. And maybe the Glazers buy into the BS and stick with Bowles another year.

As a franchise, we are worse off now than we were at 1:00

  56. Couch Fan Says:

I dont care what they did with NO. What did they do agianst us? Like I said we barely beat them the first time at home. You must not be paying attention to this team if you think anybody is an automatic win.

  64. RuKa Says:

  65. Tbbucs3 Says:

That Panthers game last week was a rainy mess….itll be a completely different story next game guaranteed.

  66. Vea's Second Stomach Says:

Fire Bowles. That was weak. Up 9 with 11 mins to go and you give up 2 tds to one of the worst offenses in the league? And then give up 71 yards in the final 30 seconds to hardly pull it out. That’s defensive negligence. Anyone saying he’s even talented is lying to themselves. The holes in his defense are massive. His playing time for players who have zero impact or even negative impact (tryon), while leaving out young difference makers is insane. His game clock management has zero explanation, except that he has zero faith in his team. It hurt to watch every Sunday. Let’s not even start on him seemingly having zero emotion or fire for the game.

  67. #99 the big fella Says:

Rod munch, Be careful what you say about Baker..Tony Marks will stop washing Bakers underwear and yell at you! Anyone saying anything about Baker makes him angry. Kinda sad that he is so obsessed.

  68. TonySoprano Says:

Believe it or not, some of us are thinking long term. We see a terrible team with a below average QB, a scared HC and a lot of overpaid veterans.

This current team and coaching staff have no shot at winning a SB. A pathetic win against a bad team today only pulls us further away from a potential franchise QB. Please stop with the whole “you’re not real fans!” schtick you simpletons.

  69. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ The “don’t make the playoffs because we’re bad” crowd is annoying”

    Agreed, complete loser mindset.

  70. Couch Fan Says:

We’ll see. I highly doubt it though.

  71. UKBuccaneer Says:

Would you rather take 150 yards and a win under Baker, or 300 yards and a loss under Winston?

The offense is horrible, nobody thinks otherwise. Some of us just understand that a new QB isn’t necessarily the answer. Center and Guard are priorities.

  72. Durango 95 Says:

The ugliness JTS showed that play. Dude should be totally embarrassed .

  73. UKBuccaneer Says:

The last time we had a no. 1 pick, the QB ended up as the saints backup. We presently have a no. 1 overall pick at QB.

So of course, we want a high pick because it’ll guarantee a franchise QB….

  74. Dan the Bucs fan Says:

Incredible how dumb our fanbase is. Bowles is here to stay our defense is playing well. We have no speed on the field at receiver and struggle to run the ball. Canales is doing pretty awsome as well. This is not a playoff team yet the coaching staff has us right here ready to win a divsion. If we had any football IQ we would be happy with how this team is overachieving! Vegas had us at 6 wins on the year.

We have lots of young talent not that far away from being really good.

  75. Lakeland Steve Says:

What a game winning drive. The offense was clutch in that last drive.

  76. Durango 95 Says:

Horrific call against McCollum on that pass interference. Almost handed them the game.

  77. Couch Fan Says:

I’d take Winston every day all day over Baker. At least with WInston you were assured of 30 points every game. Not so much with Baker

  78. Davenport Says:

DEMAND BETTER THAN SNEAKING INTO THE PLAYOFFS WITH A BAD COACHING STAFF, A BAD QB!

HOW CAN ANYONE BE HAPPY WITH MEDIOCRITY?

  79. UKBuccaneer Says:

Winston and Baker’s career stats are remarkably similar. Completion percentage, total yards, TD’s (given Baker’s been in the league for less time). The one place Baker really excels over Winston is interceptions.

    BM > JW

  80. Leslie Opyd Says:

Something really has to be done with these refs ! That was a terrible call on mcullum !! And tilted the game ! NFL get off your ass and do something !

  81. #99 the big fella Says:

Bowles will win just enough to screw us out of a franchise quarterback! Its a bucs life!

  82. Dom Says:

I really can’t believe how far how standards fell in QB play since Brady left. Baker didn’t have a good game. He had a fine last drive to win the game but the rest of the game he didn’t play well. First TD set up by the defense. Second TD was all White. Sub 50% completion rate and under 150 passing yards. I really don’t get why fans are defending this guy so hard. He isn’t a franchise QB. All this win did was hurt the Bucs chances of drafting a potential franchise QB on a cheap rookie deal which is what this team needs to really finish getting the cap straight. Awful win today

  83. Destinjohnny Says:

I’ve said all along that we have 7 win talent
Am I seeing it wrong ?
Does anyone really think a coach could come in and win 10 games with this squad?
    Asking for a friend

  84. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Dan the Buc Fan

  85. UKBuccaneer Says:

Interestingly, do you know how many TD’s per game Jameis had in TB? 1.68. Baker’s TD’s per game in Tampa? 1.38

Jameis threw 1.38 interceptions per game in Tampa. Mayfield throws 0.6

    BM > JW

  86. Jmarkbuc Says:

    UK

Highlighting two bad QBs really helps no one.

  87. TonySoprano Says:

UKBuccaneer – what exactly is your point? Nobody wants or gives a crap about Jameis. Baker is also better than Jamarcus Russel, but so what? Comparing Baker to crummy QBs does nothing to strengthen your argument. We all know the draft isn’t a sure thing, but some of us want a chance to draft a QB that isn’t bottom barrel material.

    ———

Cue the tears and violins playing softly

anyone with eyeballs can see the problem with the first half in particular was play calling.

It WAS DREADFUL. The worst half Canales has ever called. Its like he hated any play that didn’t start 4 yards deep in the back field.

However I love that wins of QBs don’t matter anymore when all season we been hearing that losing is a QB stat. Now theres a win and all you fake fans are salty

Go in your corner and cry Dom. Real buc fans are celebrating the win just fine without you .

  89. Tbbucs3 Says:

    “ Awful win today”

Really not as bad as you guys are making it tbh. If it wasn’t for the terrible PI call on McCollum the Bucs could’ve put this away earlier.

But all things considered, the defense was suspect but missing Vita Vea, White (helps w pass rush) and Dean even though McCollum stepped up big today in his absence.

  90. Delabucs Says:

I’m glad bowels can with his short game mentality. Not sure if it works next week. I hope so.

    sure they do. the coaches

You just choose to believe that theres a consrriacy and your guy really won. You would even storm the capital to overthrow the “conspiracy”

    Hmmm that sounds vaguely familiar

  93. D Cone Says:

Out played most of the day and got out with their scalps. One more win and the Bucs cover the 6.5 O/U on wins that were predicted 4 games to go.
Upside is they still lead the Giants, Commanders, Cardinals, and Panthers for a Wild Card Spot.

  94. Pewter power Says:

    Annoying

  95. Mediocre Mayfield Says:

Tony Marks has a ton of trust in the current coaching staffs at player evaluation, considering he thinks there right for not starting trask, even tho mayfield is not doing great. Must think jts still deserves snaps out there even tho he can’t tackle or get sacks when that’s his job. Probably think Ryan Neal is great too. Your a joke bro

  96. Wild Bill Says:

Hey Dom. Are you forgetting how bad Brady played last year? Baker is an average NFL qb. Not terrible and not great. But he does have grit and fight in him. The Bucs may play a first round playoff game but one and done. I wanted the Bucs to win but want BOWELS and his staff to go. Real bright spot is that young tight end who catches everything that gets close to him. And White going over 100yds for the second game in a row. BUCS have some dam good rookies that Bowles needs to play more!

  97. UKBuccaneer Says:

I was responding to the individual who said they prefer Winston because we scored 30 points a game (we didn’t, obviously, but facts don’t matter on JBF)

The broader point is that a higher draft pick means squat.

  98. An Erection for Sacks Says:

Another win that feels like a loss.

We’re going to be stuck with this coaching staff, aren’t we?

  99. Ed Says:

Unless the Bucs win out I don’t expect Bowles to be back. 2-2 these next 4 games is probably optimistic. They don’t have the offensive firepower beat the Packers. The Jags are not in any position to let up vs the Bucs.

It’s possible that they could win vs Saints. The certainty can beat Carolina.

If the Bucs go 2-2 and Saints lose to Bucs but win their other 3 games the Saints are NFC South champs.

Who thinks a Todd Bowles coaches team will beat any team with a winning record that is competing for a playoff berth?

Bucs will finish 8-9 or 7-10 probably. Team has won 2 in a row but their offensive production gets worse every week.

  100. adam from ny Says:

coach shoulda got live on the sidelines when that phantom call went against zion…but he stood there quietly smiling and smirking like “we just got screwed”…

  101. adam from ny Says:

it actually gives us the liberty to trade off one of our high paid corner if mgmt deems it necessary

  102. adam from ny Says:

we haven’t missed a beat with zion replacing smb

  103. Oneilbuc Says:

If we make the playoffs Bowles and Baker Mayfield will be back and it will be another losing season. And we will be saying the same thing next year get rid of Todd Bowles and Baker. This is a waste of time because if we make the playoffs it will be one and done. It’s time to build for the future and Baker Mayfield ain’t our future quarterback. All we doing is setting the team back while the Falcons are 1 quarterback away and the Panthers are building their future. We will be left behind Baker Mayfield had another very average day against a bad team.

  104. Mediocre Mayfield Says:

[This dude right here is one of those guys Joe mentioned on Ira’s pod. All he ever comments on is Trask — and he comments many, many, many times a day. All one subject, one player. Trask. Doesn’t matter if Bucs win or lose. Trask… Trask… Trask. — Joe]

  105. Kidfloflo Says:

“Awful win today” this is the sentiments of fans on this site! Incredulous

  106. Mediocre Mayfield Says:

    Start Trask

  107. Let ‘em bake Says:

It is true. Baker is a high end. B. Level qb. His strengths have been his smarts, durability ( still hasn’t missed a game this year) toughness. He fLourishes when outside the pocket, rollouts, bootlegs. Not sure why, since the saints game, we haven’t seen more of that. Perhaps our running threat is still not great enough to allow it. Perhaps out tight ends are not up to the routes that go with these type of plays. I don’t know. Given this tool has been taken out of his hands, a fair minded person could see that he has performed well, given the offenses limitations. I can see the Bucs resigning him, draft a late first round qb, and serve next season, and the future.

  108. Fred Says:

    Get rid of Bowles!
We need a coach who can have a winning record.

  109. Daniel Dream Says:

First of all, anyone cheering for the Buccaneers to lose need to sir down and stfu. Those ppl don’t belong here. Those ppl hate the team…

So now we’re on to my second point:
can we all stop complaining so damn much about a first place team, at least while they’re in first place?!? Smfh

  110. vadertime Says:

Doomsday is merely delayed. Bucs survived by the skin of their teeth when time ran out as Atlanta reached the 5 yard line, otherwise we would have gone into overtime and lost. Tampa got very lucky with the rookie mistakes made by Atlanta’s QB, but he’ll get better and he is better than Baker. He was threading the needle with some of those laser focused passes. Baker was okay, but the defensive turnovers definitely helped. Also, don’t forget about Atlanta’s 2 missed field goals from their normally reliable kicker. Again, Tampa got lucky in a crappy, cellar-bottom-dwelling division. If they make the playoffs, which is highly unlikely they will probably get knocked out in the first round. Bowles cannot carry this team to a championship and neither can Baker. Glazers, clean house after this season and bring in a new HC and new coaches all the way around. I like Baker, but he is not the long-term answer, but he may buy us some time to find the long-term answer under center. Go Bucs.
