The Case Of Mike Evans, An Excited Bucs Fan And Packers Security

December 19th, 2023

Hassle for his touchdown ball.

When Joe is covering the Bucs at an NFL stadium, often Joe is watching a totally different game. No, really.

Joe rarely has quick access to network feeds of the game. Oh, there are TVs available but often they are in crazy angles where Joe cannot get a decent look (except in Atlanta where there are small TVs on the desk at every seat for credentialed media).

Mostly, Joe relies on JumboTron replays of each play. Such was the case on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

When Mike Evans scored his touchdown, Joe saw him give the ball to a Bucs fan. That’s the only thing Joe knew. Then, Joe began getting texts from fans asking why the fan who got Evans’ ball got into a hassle with a Packers security guard.

Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier of The Messenger claimed the fan was dressed like a “pirate gargoyle.” NFL humorist Dave Dameshek referred to the security guard as a “lunch lady in a neon vest.”

Well after the game ended, Joe saw a video clip of the incident on Twitter, currently known as “X.”

Just from what Joe saw, and nothing else, Joe thought the Bucs fan may have been run from the game. He burst through a gate to get Evans’ ball, a gate to keep people from walking down a set of stairs to the field. That’s a major no-no, in any stadium.

In some cities, security guards might have started wailing on the dude.

The texts Joe got believed the security guard ripped the ball away. Apparently, not so.

The fan in question seems to go by the Twitter handle @JayBuc525. And he posted yesterday morning that everything was cool. JayBuc525 posed with the football he got from Evans with the same security guard and a cop in the background (photo below), standing in front of the gate he crashed. Everybody was all smiles.

Joe is guessing that football is probably going to be encased in glass and displayed at JayBuc525’s house somewhere prominent, if he doesn’t sell it for top dollar.

I saw him go through the gate but when I watched the replay in slow motion, you can see that he is running down the stairs towards the gate as Mike catches the ball. His momentum put him through the gate, but not sure why is wasn’t locked securely

This is awesome that this has turned into a story. Usually you see a fan flipping the bird, dressed crazy or doing something wild during an extra point or TD. After Mike scored and the Bucs were kicking the extra point it looked like the guy just ran past the TSA at airport and was about to get run. Glad to hear it all ended well.

I sat next to JayBuc in Munich at the Seahawks game last year. I ran into him again last season in Atlanta and earlier this year in Minneapolis. He goes to EVERY game. Awesome dude and a true super fan. When I saw that live on TV Sunday I knew right away that was him. Mask is a dead giveaway. Awesome that Mike hooked him up and credit to security for playing it right.

  4. Bbro Says:

It looked to me like he was reaching / leaning over the gate towards Evans and the gate opened and the wannabe cop took that as his chance to become johnnybubblegum and try to run our beloved fan out of the slimy bay stadium

  5. Carolina K Says:

I am friends with him on FB. He travels with the BUCS as much as he can. Saw him in Germany. Cool dude.

  6. Cardiac kidz Says:

Very happy to read this and how it ended. I understand the need for the security and the emotions of being a fan. Great picture to post!

  7. Baking with Canales Says:

    Cool
    Thanks Joe!

  8. Lt. Dan Says:

I noticed this as it happened. Thought for sure JayBuc was gonna get run. Kudos to the Packers security guard and the Green Bay cops. Very cool ending.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Good thing Evans didn’t look for a fan to give the ball to before he caught it.

Last time he dropped a TD.

Because it’s Green Bay, Wisconsin maybe?
Not really known for an abundance of security issues, just a bunch of diehard and mostly respectful fans.

  11. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

With everything I have heard about how classy the fans are up there this seems to track perfectly.

  12. Razor Ramone Says:

This story and one About about Baker were headlines on Outkick yesterday ,which is rare these days.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

When I saw it live, I thought the guard was trying to ta ke back the football.

    Glad it worked out.

  14. Upstate NY BUC Says:

I sat right behind him at the Buffalo game, good dude….

  15. garro Says:

So glad you posted this Joe!
I really thought from what I saw that the guard was hassling the Bucs fan and taking the ball away. You know, being an over officious jerk.

Glad that is not the case. I remember attending many games at the old Sombrero with the Packer fans. Of the NFC Central fans the Packer fans were by far the best. Even though they were seemingly the most numerous.

    Bears fans …not so much.

    Go Bucs!

  16. Marine Buc Says:

It looked to me that the Buc fan might have tripped and fell into the gate as he was running down the stairs to greet Mike Evans. The gate gets jarred open as it broke this dudes fall…

I’m glad he ended up getting the ball. Dude wasn’t trying to do anything bad.

  17. orlbucfan Says:

Man, this fanboy has a few $$$ if he’s attending all those Bucs games. No small wonder he can afford that goofy, eye-catching getup. Good thing he wasn’t in Philly. Those bozos would have cut off his head before he even got to the field, especially if the Bucs were winning. Green Bay and its fans are classy. I was at a few NFC Central matchups with the Pack and their fans. Usually the Bucs were losing.

Guy doing his job dealing with drunks and god knows what else
    Everything ok move on

  22. infomeplease Says:

The tv announcers made it sound like he was getting tossed from the stadium! I’m glad he wasn’t and got that ball!

  23. david Says:

Looked like the gate opened accidentally as he leaned to it and the security guard thought he came through on purpose.
    All good though !
    Go Bucs

  24. SlyPirate Says:

Funny Story: I’m in Europe for Xmas holiday. They televised the Bucs game. I couldn’t understand the commentators (German) but I did understand every time they said “Peckers”. Wife and I were dying it was so funny.

  25. Joe Says:
