Monster Game Sunday For Mike Evans?

December 6th, 2023

Numbers say…

If you are a big stats guy, then maybe your fantasy team this weekend ought to have a certain Bucs receiver.

Look, the Bucs don’t want Chris Godwin to be a part of their offense. Joe’s done trying to find excuses. Again, today Bucs coach Todd Bowles said the offense must get Chris Godwin more involved.

Todd, how about you walk over to your offensive coordinator’s office and tell him face-to-face that either he finds a way to target Godwin or you will find someone who can.

Either Canales doesn’t know how to draw up plays to spring Godwin open or he doesn’t want to. That’s all. So either Bowles is flat out blowing smoke, otherwise he will do something about it. He is in charge of the entire football team, you know?

This nonsense has been happening for months. In Joe’s mind, these guys don’t want Godwin to have the ball, otherwise they would have made sure of it by now. That is, unless Godwin is so hurt he can run a 19-yard end around for a score.

Since the Bucs don’t want Godwin to catch passes, which is just beyond Joe’s comprehension, the good news is that the Dixie Chicks’ defense, per Sharp Football Analysis, is a sieve when it comes to giving up touchdown passes.

Over 80 percent of the touchdowns scored on Atlanta come through the air.

And Mike Evans is hot.

Using simple logic and common sense, Joe would expect the Bucs to target Evans a bunch in the red zone.

Then again, very little about this Bucs offense is sound logic and often makes no sense at all. So who knows?

I can only assume that because of Godwin’s neck injury they are protecting him by not passing to him very much. Hopefully that heals soon. I know he played last week but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t suffering from that injury. Players, real players, play when they are hurting!

  2. SBucs Says:

Expect the unexpected. The Todd will do everything but throw to either Mike Evans or Chris Godwin.

  3. Dwayne Cone Says:

3 of 12 games where Evans was over 100. Way over 100. All wins and Bucs scored 20, 21, and 27 (would have been 20 if not for Shaq’s pick 6).

Last two big games for Evan are closer than the first two so it could strike twice.

  4. Lt. Dan Says:

“Again today Bucs coach Todd Bowles said the Bucs offense must get Chris Godwin more involved.” No sh!t. That is as intellectual as saying, “We need to coach better” OR “Players need to play better” Please Glazers..do the right thing and hire a different HC! Todd Monken anyone?

So the Falcons defense gave up 17 TD’s through the air and is a sieve. Tampa’s 16 through the air is an Iron Curtain?
    Should really research your sources.

This Godwin thing is weird. 1st 6 Games 49 Targets, 33 Catches, 398 Yards.
He was on a pace to have over 1100 yards. Last 6 games 36 Targets, 20 Catches, 208 Yards.
    Now let’s look at Baker, 1st 6 games 133 Completions, 204 Throws. Last 6 games 127 Completions, 205 Throws.
Baker is still throwing at the same pace, he just isn’t throwing to Godwin much anymore. Everyone knows Palmer and Thompkins are not better options. 7.6 yards per catch. That is what the avg completion is to Palmer or Thompkins. So it is either injury (to Godwin) or incompetence (Coaches). I vote incompetence.

the good news is that the Dixie Chicks’ defense, much like Tampa’s per Sharp Football Analysis, is a sieve when it comes to giving up touchdown passes.

Dwayne Cone…I fixed it for you 🙂

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I think Mayfield and Godwin simply don’t have the connection. For whatever reason, Godwin’s patterns do not match up with what Mayfield is looking for in a playcall. Canales is part of that though and it’s not just scheming, it’s coaching. Coach Mayfield to see everybody and to find Godwin. We know he’s open enough.

  9. Boss Says:

ME had a monster game. about damn time he showed up.

could there be a situation where the QB and WR have a deal to get him x yards?

that would be the only reason I can think of. It’s not like all mikes drops make him a #1 target.

well that and baker is 4’7″ and can’t throw the inside slants and 10 yards over the middle throws.

well, he can, but he throws it to the other teams D line.

  10. SlyPirate Says:

I think it’s the later. I think Canales doesn’t know how to draw up plays that get guys open (a la 49ers and Dolphins).

  11. BUCS4LIFE Says:

Preach on brother! I think Joe knows where I stand

  12. Usfbuc Says:

I agree it seems like a play design issue. Watch other games and you can see how the other routes clear out a space for the primary target on the play. Our passing plays often look like backyard football.

  13. Kidfloflo Says:

If there is so much parity in the league and people go so far as to steal other people’s calls ( Belicheat etc.) How come Canales doesn’t watch film of say the Dolphins, 49ers , Chiefs and literally crib off some of their most successful plays and schemes and implement them into his own!?

  14. WyomingJoe Says:

BOSS: Your comment about Baker being too small to throw slants is idiotic. Man, you must really hate this guy! But, then again, who cares what you think! Just don’t be angry with him when he wins on Sunday.

Name this website BASH THE BUCS
    FIRE TODD BOWLES & CANALES
Every post is negative and literally dramatic
Hope they win out so you all eat your words

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Well to defend Mayfield, Canales and Bowles a little – if Mike is hot, feed him the ball.

Last week, watching some replays, it’s clear that Mayfield should have thrown the ball even more to Mike as he was constantly open and easily could have had a 250 yard day.

I like Godwin, and vs good teams you need to have at least two quality WRs, and generally 3, but right now Mike is on fire, and you should ride him until he cools off, if he cools off.

Any one on one situation should end with the ball throw in the vicinity of Mike.

  17. Duane in Sanford Says:

I dont think Baker can get the ball to receivers over the right side of the line. Passes get batted down, and I dont think he is accurate. I seemed like Godwin was on the right side a whole lot. Not sure why Baker doesnt roll that way more. I also dont think Godwin is right. He hasnt had many explosive plays this season, and he has not been the chain mover on third downs like he was in the past. Evans has turned in a stellar season so far, in the same offense. I find it hard to believe that there is a willing neglect to get the ball to their second best option on offense. For the money CG is paid, someone from up top mustve checked in to ask what the deal is. Its a down year for Godwin. They cant all be pro caliber seasons. Also another testament to the greatnes of ME13 and why they should back that money truck up now.

  18. BradyGronk Fan Says:

Godwin thrived with Brady as he could get open quickly and on time. Tons of his catches were in tight windows. Mayfield is just not as accurate to make those tight window throws consistently. Mayfield and Godwin are not a good fit for each other.

Evans in 2022 didn’t do as well with Brady, as he just didn’t have enough time to throw and at 45 didn’t want to get hit waiting for Evans to get open. Mayfield is willing to do what it takes to be able to take deep shots to Evans.

  19. Crickett Baker Says:

I agree with Bucs107. It needs to be said.

  20. TampabayDJ Says:

@Bucs107 – I totally agree with you 💯. Nothing but a bunch of bandwagon , fake fans who know nothing about football. They just started watching when the Bucs were winning the last 3 years. Same people who sell their tickets to the opponent’s fans . And I’m completely tired of this site. Everyone is a hater about something. Should be happy for the winning years we had , and still have a good chance to continue to compete. But no , they will find any and every little thing to complain about. True Bucs fan here , signing out of this crap site for good ✌️

Don’t let the door khit you on the way out, DJ. You Pollyanna so-called fans are the clueless ones. This team has a sorry coach and you know it. Just drink your soy milk and calm down. Guarantee you’ll be back.
