Devin White Impactful But Not Back To Full-Time

December 27th, 2023

Still part-time player?

Will Bucs fans see as much Devin White on Sunday as they did against Jacksonville? It depends, Bucs coach Todd Bowles said today.

That doesn’t mean White will have a reduced role. Bowles plans on playing White. When White is right he makes the entire Bucs defense better, per the head coach.

“He can help us a great deal, you saw that on Sunday,” Bowles said. “A healthy Devin, a fast Devin, Devin flying around like he did Sunday makes us a faster defense.”

The Bucs planned on White sharing time with reserve linebacker K.J. Britt. That plan was put on ice because the Bucs were hammering the Jags, though Joe is highly suspicious considering Britt started the game, played one snap and got pulled.

Bowles emphasized Britt didn’t play much because the Bucs got ahead with a big lead so early. Defensive packages that Bowles wanted to run were scraped because Jacksonville was playing catch-up. Britt was to be a key cog in those packages, Bowles said.

Britt had just three snaps on defense Sunday, whereas previously he had 65 snaps at Atlanta and 55 at Green Bay while subbing for White.

Typically, White plays 100 percent of the snaps, as does Lavonte David.

This is a tacit admission that Britt is better against the run.

bowles to White: I wish I knew how to quit you 🥹

    Bucs fans: We do too!

Please somebody explain this obsession with White’s speed. It reminds me of when Al Davis would always just draft the fastest player he could get. But to what end? He’s fast BUT he sucks in coverage. He’s fast BUT he takes terrible angles and isn’t a very good tackler (Minshew says hi). He’s fast BUT he loafs half the game anyhow. So as far as I’m concerned his speed is worth about as much as a fart in the wind. Of course “Coach of the year” bowles will never see it. He’s soooo bad at evaluating talent.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

White was clearly the choice in nickel packages, and since the Jaguars ended up running nearly 87% of their plays with three receivers on the field that put him in position for a lot of action.

By the end of the game, he had logged 63 of a possible 66 defensive snaps, or 95% of the total, while Britt was in for the other three plays.

  4. orlbucfan Says:

This guy had Bowles, LVD, etc. to educate him when he was drafted. Wow, what a gig. So far, I hope he gets lost soon cos he’s made $$$$ off it. 2 more games and let LVD rest. Otherwise, gone.

  5. Buccos Says:

White played a whale of a game. If he could play that way every week he would be an All Pro. However we all know that ain’t gonna happen

  6. Rod Munch Says:

“A healthy Devin, a fast Devin, Devin flying around like he did Sunday makes us a faster defense.”

    You know who isn’t fast?

    Britt.

    Shots fired.

  7. Pryda…sec147 Says:

Such a non story inflamed by twitter trolls White is a Bucs and is getting resigned with us.

  8. Hodad Says:

The Bucs will resign White to a deal he’ll never live up to. Once you pay him, good luck motivating him. Week 16, and White has had two games worth mentioning, he’s been average otherwise. He’ll be Jason’s next bad contract.

  9. Rich Says:

Iremember21 is SPOT ON!!!! I can’t understand how some of you on jbf can be so blind to this guy….3 plays in a game and he’s had a great game? A whale of a game? Give me a freakin break!!!! Watch the replay people…yes , he finally made a couple plays and he is fast but he’s carelessly fast…no football instincts whatsoever. Then watch 54 and you’ll see a real nfl LB at work….

    ………………
Says it all. If there’s ANYthing a freaking middle linebacker should be good at, it’s stopping the RUN, and they don’t even trust DW for THAT

  11. Lt. Dan Says:

@ I remember 21…that was some funny stuff! Britt > White. Britt plays the run better, the pass better and appears to give a crap about his craft.

  12. ModHairKen Says:

Is White capable? Yes. Why has his play fallen off? Injuries? Immaturity? Both? Neither? What I do know is this was the contract year, and he has not been consistent or reliable.

Will he take a contract offer that is fair for what he delivered? Probably not. Probably end up in NO.

  13. B.D Says:

Reminds me of Kwon Alexander,he makes a great play, then…..oops went to the wrong place.missed a tackle etc.etc.

  14. CHRISTOS Says:

D.White, the one word that i can say as a Bucs fan is Frustrated.
He has shown the potential but his play is not always there.
He showed in the 2020 Playoffs that he could be the best LB in the league.
Flying around, being everywhere, making playes in coverage. He showed it all.
But aftet that he is so inconsistent that just frustrates you.
I dont know what to expect from him on the field in all honestly. You dont know what you going to get when he is playing and that is never a good sign for a player.
    Go Bucs

  15. Lord Cornelius Says:

He’s no Lavonte but hopefully he can help us make some noise this year before we move on

  16. Beeej Says:

A change of scenery would do wonders for him, I’m thinking Sean Payton needs to be his coach

  17. Dave Pear Says:

No sense in listening to Todd’s disinformation.

  18. MoeB Says:

You guys are terrible Devin is a Super Bowl champion.

  19. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

I believe Bowles is playing the long game. Benched his butt and gave him an out with “not ready to go”. Taught that young man that December is show time go time. I believe we are going to see just what a monster talent Devin White is these last two games and s playoff victory over Cowboys/Eagles/whoever comes into RayJ.

  20. Popcorn Mike Says:

White has been a hell of LB for the Bucs. Now all over sudden he can’t play the run or some other stuff that’s wrong with him. My thoughts are him and Bowles has bumped heads and Whites in the dog house. And we all saw White complaining about a big contract way way before time to talk contract. I think Whites a decent guy but like many young guys, I think he’s a hot head

  21. BakerBucs Says:

All post & opinions matter but devin white played lites out on Sunday against the jaguars so all the sucks this sucks that is meaningless with his results if he doesn’t produce coach will pull him if necessary he likes his job so does white let the season finish no time for ticky tacky cry baby bs we just need a strong finish nothing more nothing less.now wasnt that clever

  22. orlbucfan Says:

I’m going to watch the game—sound off—on the boob tube, and listen to it on BRadio. Hopefully, time delay won’t be bad. I’m focusing on LVD and DWhite on D. White either shows up or shuts up. LVD needs to be able to take breaks. Not worried about O and ST. I am fed up to ###### with DW. He gets a SB ring, and immediately his game dies the next season. Screw him and the horsey he rode in on. I like horses, BTW.

  23. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Bakerbucs – I’m going blind reading your posts. A comma maybe? A period here or there?

  24. adam from ny Says:

one of the joes said britt played 3 defensive snaps last sunday…

and i was asking myself the entire game, where is kj britt…

i do not call taking 3 snaps even remotely sharing time at any position

  25. Beeej Says:

Has DW had a hurt wheel for 2 years?

  26. garro Says:

I have been very critical of Bowles answers to the press lately.

However sometimes they ask questions that are…shall we say not good?

That question was one in which the answer might reveal the Bucs game plan on Sunday. In fact Bowles probably said too much on this one.

I hope that if Bowles is still here next year he studies his mistakes from this season as it deals with media. Q&As with a bit more Belicheat type of stuff with one word or non descript answers or even a few not gonna answer that right nows. He really has shot himself in the foot on multiple occasions.

    Go Bucs!

  27. Larrd Says:

Maybe Bowles should rotate players more in game so they don’t seem tired come playoffs.

Rather than run up the gut on first down so much.
