Can The Buccaneers Win The Super Bowl?

December 24th, 2023

Team Glazer is left to ponder the question facing most Bucs fans: “How good are we?”

When your team wins four in a row in December, you’ve earned the right to ask the question without someone throwing a rotten tomato in your direction.

Can the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl?

Joe will give a quick answer. No. Why? Because the running game is too weak (still the statistical worst in the NFL in yards per carry) and because the pass rush remains too reliant on blitzing, which is very dicey in the playoffs against top offenses.

But can the Bucs be a dangerous playoff team? Absolutely. Why? Because they have Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Lavonte David, Antoine Winfield and Devin White (gasp!), among other playmakers that have performed deep into January in past seasons.

The Bucs simply have too much talent for anyone to be surprised if they win a playoff game. Remember, Baker Mayfield has a postseason win under his belt, and he nearly beat the Chiefs during that January 2021 run.

Yeah, Joe realizes the more pressing question is whether the Bucs can beat the slimy Saints next Sunday. If they can’t do that, in Tampa, then hope of beating anyone in the postseason is probably just that: hope.

    Yep!

  2. MadMax Says:

Get that D straight, get the wideouts not dropping, get a full steam ahead run game, yep thats right we can win it all, and how sweet that would be…..

  3. Leighroy Says:

I think they can win a WC round game, sure. Divisional round win likely vs the 49ers, Lions or Eagles (whom they’ve already lost to all 3) would be improbable. Doing it again in the NFC championship even less likely. Winning a superbowl vs the Dolphins, Ravens or Bills you’re really asking for a miracle.

Anything is possible sure, but Joe has better odds w Rachel Watson.

  4. Preston Says:

Leighroy what about Ira’s chances with Bette Midler?

  5. Alanbucsfan Says:

Can the Bucs beat the Cowboys in Tampa? Yes
Can the Bucs beat a healthy 49ers team on the road? Not this year

  6. Tony marks Says:

On any given Sunday does NOT mean over several playoff games.

  7. Larrd Says:

I hear Joe already did Watson!

    A done deal!

  8. ‘79 Defense Says:

Whatever happens, at least there’s some fun this late in the season. Hopefully there’s a bit more on the way.

  9. Buc4evr Says:

One game at a time. Not even thinking past the Saints.

  10. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

If the Bucs stay hot, they absolutely can run the table. Probably need some cornerback help along the way, but stranger things have happened before.

  11. Saskbucs Says:

Possible yes, win in the WC round and there should be no pressure cause it’s house money at that point. A win in Div. Round might as well be a SB win to us fans because even the most optimistic among us never saw that coming this year. Would be incredible experience for all our young guys and would lead to an exciting offseason to keep building. I can’t believe we are talking like this with Bowles still steering the ship. As long as this season ends competitively in the playoffs, I am happy.

  12. Beeej Says:

WHOA!….”Let’s not start sucking each other’s dicks quite yet, gentlemen”

  13. Beeej Says:

There was sposed to be an ! in there

  14. BUCS4LIFE Says:

I think anything is possible and if they play together like they did today they can beat anyone out there. Give em all hell boys. Go BUCS!

  15. Oddball Says:

    Agree with Joe, no.

But, these last few games have been fun to watch. Tonight, especially.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

We will gonas far as Baker Mayfield takes us.

Somehow, he is winning big, with terrible Defense, Running Game, and Oline.
We shouldnt have won 5 games this year. We are a worse team than last year.

I dont know how hes doing it

  17. Trask Cult Leader Says:

Only Kyle could pull off a SB run

  18. Curse of Gruden Says:

What’s this rumor about Ira and Bette Midler?
I thought Ira was the wind beneath Joe’s wings.

  19. Lakeland Steve Says:

Everyone who thinks we could beat SanFran in their house raise their hands. We are a few guys short right now. We need an explosive running back who can get tough yards on the ground. We need at least one excellent pass rushing Defensive end/OLB. We need another safety and at least one good cornerback not named Carlton Davis. I’m sure there are a couple others we should add but that’s a good start. Oh, and a real run blocking/excellent pass catching tight end.

“Can the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl?
Joe will give a quick answer. No.”

Okay, let me do something outside of my norm for this year:

I am going to suggest that we CAN go to the Superbowl. Win it? Who really knows?

But the NFC has mostly been weak this year, and no team is unbeatable. Even the 49ers at home.

This team has gone through a rapid evolution the past couple weeks, from the coaches down to the players.

They are healthy! They are playing well! Heck, Bowles has suddenly improved as well. Him time management is better, and did we even see a prevent defense today?

The Jags are a very good team. The Bucs beat them.

The defense didn’t get gassed either.

I have been negative most of the year…but I misjudged the staff and the QB.

    Let’s go to the Superbowl!

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The next two games are extremely winnable. This team will have momentum entering the playoffs.

  22. godlovesbucs Says:

Beating Dallas in Tampa is a possibility for sure.

In Detroit and in Philly is possible, both teams have shown weakness.

In San Fran is another story.

  23. Bucsgoham12 Says:

Going to need a corner to have an SMB like playoff run with big ints and deflections.
Go near perfect in the redzone.
    Long drives to limit possessions
Protect the ball and hope Edmonds or White play like Lenny did.
Devin White to take it personal wanting to be better than Parsons, Warner, and other top lbs they face.
dline to have consistent impact which is asking a lot since rookies our their best.

  24. Jim Says:

No one knows. It is about matchups. The Bucs have as much chance as any other team. Cross your fingers and cheer louder.

  25. Larrd Says:

I could see the Rams beating the 49ers and then the Rams traveling to Tampa for NFC Championship game. It is in my tea leaves.

  26. Ben Harvey Says:

If they make a run, they pass rush and pass d will need to step up. Weakest link.

  27. steele Says:

NFL is parity. Any team on any given day can go on mini-streaks, even a poorly coached team like this one. Especially when you’re blessed to be in the worst division. They are barely above .500, which is about what they are.The key to the postseason is always the same: staying healthy, peaking at just the right moment, luck, matchups, and face plants by opponents (who are not peaking at the last moment, injured, were overrated, or some other problems).

Nobody says this team can’t be a spoiler. They’re in a good underdog position, overlooked, for good reason. Ultimately, however, it is still Todd Bowles, a proven disappointment, Canales a newbie, and Mayfield, the prince of hit or miss. and that has not changed.

  28. steele Says:

Looking around the NFL, the answer this season is actually yes. It has been an unimpressive season all around, with no team consistent or surefire at all. Even the 49ers have clear vulnerabilities that were exposed previously, and could resurface. If the Bucs wind up vs. Dallas, for instance, Bucs could win it pretty easily. Cowboys couldn’t even hold off the Dolphins.

  29. garro Says:

We caught fire at the right time in 2021. Without a supreme running game. Remember playoff Lenny?

    Yes

    Go Bucs!

  30. adam from ny Says:

    philly is def down cycling…

dallas is good – but every performance is not good…

we’ve def go a shot at a wildcard upset…and anything goes after that

  31. EternalSon Says:

    YES they can.

    That’s why it’s called competition.

    Merry Christmas! Go Bucs!!!

  32. orlbucfan Says:

Merry Christmas, joes and all Bucs fandom!! Welp, we’ve got 2 games left, and we’re yakking about playoffs and the Stupid Bowl, not draft positions. What a world. BB, can I have some of that exotic eggnog you’re drinking? No, Bucs aren’t ready for the SB. They need a few more pieces. They’ll get them. I have faith in the coaches and Mr. Licht. Man, did the Glazer Boyz luck out when they hired him.

  33. WillB Says:

Among those impact players you listed don’t forget about Diaby!

  34. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Yes, but it depends on Devin White and Antoine Winfield taking away the middle of the field against 49ers. Shut that down, and the Niners are beatable. Watch what the Ravens do, i predict they move Hamilton closer and Queen back today

  35. Pickgrin Says:

Any team that qualifies for NFL postseason has at least a minor chance of getting “hot” and winning 4 in a row.

If the Bucs could “win out” (10 in a row to finish the season) and hoist the Lombardi trophy – that would be one of the most epic finishes ever to an NFL season – after a 4-7 start.

    4 down – 6 to go….

    Highly unlikely – yet possible…..

  36. Carver City Says:

This team, led by Baker Mayfield will hoist the Lombardi trophy in Las Vegas.

  37. Jordan Holman Says:

Go Bucs. I think the Buccaneers might make it to another super bowl. Only if they try hard and not lose any more gam. I think Trask should start the rest of the games.

  38. BAKERSBucs says Says:
