Antoine Winfield Named NFC Defensive Player Of The Week; Contract Push Marches On

December 6th, 2023

The headline here says it all. In a contract year, safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is pouring it on.

Today, Winfield was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his work Sunday against Panthers and their JV quarterback, rookie Bryce Young.

Winfield’s sack and an interception was enough to score the honor, the first time a Bucs safety won the prize since Mike Edwards in Week 2 of the 2021 season.

Since entering the league in 2020, Winfield’s 12 sacks lead all defensive backs and he ranks tied for first among defensive backs in quarterback hits (18) and is tied for second in forced fumbles (eight).

That’s nice ammunition for his agent come the end of this season.

#1 free agent to keep even though NFL devalues the safety position. Pay the man, he’s the Mike Evans of the D

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Franchise tag incoming.

  6. RC Says:

Franchise tag on him likely wouldn’t be as bad as say QB, WR or LB/DE – still should avoid doing it. Let White go and keep ME13 and Winfield Jr. Sounds like a good plan to me. Bye, Devon.

Offer him a stake in ownership!!! Seriously this guy needs to be a Buccaneer for life! Player and beyond. Don’t let the next John Lynch walk away! This guy’s football IQ is infinite.

    2024 Notable Free Agents
    Evans
    WInfield
    LVD
    McLaughlin
    Baker

$58M in cap space. $6M for draft. $52M.

More than enough room to keep Evans, Winfield, McLaughlin and bring in FA, assuming the Bucs move onto a rookie QB or Trask.

Nice Kaufman take boys. Winfield Defensive player of the week yet you said his game has fallen off. Joes got the Weakest Take of the week.

Jason misses so many draft picks that when he hits one we really need to give him props
