Antoine Winfield Having An Elite Season

December 5th, 2023

Balling.

As JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman typed yesterday, no one is playing safety at a higher level at this moment than Bucs safety Antoine Winfield.

It is not an exaggeration to type that Winfield is all over the field. Stats prove it.

Winfield on Sunday led the Bucs with eight tackles. He did so much more. Two tackles were for a loss. He added three passes defensed, a sack, a quarterback hit and, of course, sealed the win with a pick.

Per the Bucs, Winfield is just the third player since 1999 to have a stat line that good or better.

Since Winfield came into the league in 2020, no defensive back has more quarterback hits, 18 (Seattle’s Jamal Adams also has 18). Winfield’s sack was the 12th of his career. No other defensive back has as many this decade.

    All Pro

    Sign him up long term.

    Go Bucs

    LOL

  2. BucsFan81 Says:

He needs to be kept at all cost. I hope this team does not cheap out on the players that have been productive. Winfield, Wirfs, Evans and David all need to be kept no matter what. As they have produced all year on a below average team.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    All I know

Is that if the Bucs don’t make him the highest paid Safety in the NFL….and if he hits FA?????

Then Antoine Winfield will get one of the largest contracts for an NFL Safety in league history……he’s that good.

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

He needs to catch the dang football and he’d be elite. He’ll get better coaching when Bowles is gone. The entire secondary will be better.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

13 & 31 are our best players this season. Most of the other guys are underperforming or they flat out stink.

  6. NE Fan Says:

I have no negative comments about Winfield except how good could this guy be.if he weren’t playing for Blows?

  7. Bucs Guy Says:

Must re-sign Winfield Jr, LVD, Evans, McLaughlin, Wirfs (this year to reduce cap hit)

  8. realistic-optimistic Says:

He’s so good. Way better than any other player on this defense. I wish we didn’t have to give him a mega contract when the rest of the team has so many holes. Hard to justify giving 20 mil to a S when the team also needs better CBs, QB, ILB, EDGE, IOL. But I still want him signed. Right now, he’s the only playmaker on defense.

  9. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

He no doubt should be the highest paid safety. Wirf is also deserving to be the best paid at his position. Both young men are All-Pros.

  10. A Bucs Fan Says:

Honestly I could see everyone but Wirfs leaving in FA. LVD retires, Winfield to the Vikings, Mike Evans to the Texans. Bucs are worse next year than this year and then the rebuild begins in 25.

  11. TomBucsFan Says:

Winfield will get the franchise tag if there is no deal this year

  12. J Ghotier Says:

Stated on this Here website pre-Draft that Winfield Jr was my FAVORITE player in that entire Draft outside of the perceived top 5-10 Draft picks.

I just knew this guy was gonna be a player. The funny thing is (including on this here website and other Draft expert opinions on various others), no one was really even talking about this dude pre-Draft. Hardly any mentions comparatively to other players in that Draft (including just talking about the Safety position).

I thought Joe would’ve talked more about him pre-Draft like Joe did Lavonte David pre-Draft the year he came out. Joe was all over David pre-Draft that year when others weren’t as much. And Joe had that one right all along!

  13. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Still room to grow. Should have knocked the pass down instead of intercepting last week, cost us 25 yards to boost his stats.

  14. Lakeland Steve Says:

A hell of a game against the Panthers that seems to have been missed by a lot of people except Bucs fans. It seems as well that Ryan Neale had more of an impact on the game because he swapped playing linebacker for much of the game. Hopefully Bowles can scheme up some stuff for both Neale and Winfield to be more involved on run and pass blitzes. Having both of these guys involved made us more impactful on defense.

  15. CAbucsfan Says:

Rhonde Barber record for sacks and picks will be Winfields LFG!!!!!!

  16. Mord Says:

He’s a genuine bright spot in this darkish season. He’s clearly an elite player who needs some peers and complementary teammates back in that defensive backfield.

    Sign him long term

  17. Fansince76 Says:

He is freakin awesome and the Buc’s must and will re-sign him.
i do not see him going anywhere.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So many players are free agents next year:

    Antoine Winfield Jr. – $16,000,000+
Devin White – $20,000,000+ (not going to happen)
Lavonte David – $4,500,000 (will probably retire)
Chase McLaughlin – $??? (No idea what he will get paid, but he deserves to be resigned.
Mike Evans – $23,500,000 (Worth it)
    Deven Thompkins – $1-2,000,000 (cheap)

There are plenty more that are up.

Out of the list above, I think Winfield, Mclaughlin, and Evans are the most important.

  19. Canabuc Says:

Looking at this Buccaneers defense, if properly coached, I think there is a very young strong core. Between Vida Villa, Kaija can see Yaya Diaby, Antoine Winfield and Servocia, Denis We have some significant young talent.
If our cornerbacks would play to their salaries, and if we can get some better inside linebacker talent, knowing that Lavonte David likely is playing his last season with us and Devon White should not be re-signed. I think we have a very good core.

  20. CAbucsfan Says:

#54 isn’t playing for any other team and resigns for another year, he’s playing at a high level to retire after this year.
#45 See ya around, probably signs with 9’ers lol

  21. Sly Pirate Says:

Winfield is arguably the best player on the team.
    Winfield or Wirfs. Tough call.

Winfield, Vea, Kancey, Yaya are our building blocks on defense.

  22. Daniel Says:

Winfield is not hitting free agency…He will be franchise tagged and signed.
