“We Have To Cut Out The Mistakes For Us To Win Ballgames”

November 26th, 2023

Not mistake-free either.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles talks about cutting down mistakes. It’s a common theme as the Bucs have lost six of their last seven games.

Speaking postgame on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Bowles discussed the never-ending errors.

“We have to cut out the mistakes,” Bowles said. “We have to cut out the mistakes for us to win ballgames.

“We know what to do. We know what to do. We work hard. We know how to do it. The team understands that.

“We see a lot of the same mistakes every week and they are not making the corrections. If they expect to win, they have to clean that up.”

No, Joe doesn’t believe the Bucs know they are making mistakes or know how to correct them because if they did, these mistakes would have been resolved weeks ago.

And let’s be real: Coaches are making the same blunders over and over again as well. How many weeks has Joe been screaming for the Bucs to get away from their run game because their best weapons are in the pass game? Screaming!

In the second half, apparently tired of farting around, Baker Mayfield (Dave Canales?) decided to start targeting two of the best receivers in the game, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

What happened? Touchdown!

HELLO!!!???

The running game was not the issue today. That’s as much the Colts’ soft run defense as it was the Bucs balling out.

Mayfield throwing into triple coverage forcing the ball to Evans? Why? Mayfield taking sacks? Why? Trey Palmer dropping a can of corn for a big gain? Why are you throwing to him with Evans and Godwin?

Fourth-and-one and you give up a 30-yard pass?

Simple yet dumb mistakes up and down the field on both sides.

And no, if you cannot figure out you need to stop making mistakes or cannot figure out a way after 11 games to stop making mistakes, it’s a very good bet these mistakes won’t go away until March when teams begin rebuilding their rosters.

Bowles chastising the players for mistakes? He’s not wrong. But he and his coaches’ mistakes are equally pathetic.

You guys are missing the big picture… The Bowles finished the game with 5 TIMEOUTS in his pocket! No one else does that, and you’re going to see how that eventually pays off!

  2. MegaFailure Says:

    PFFFTTTTTTT

  3. Adam's Angry Says:

Wow… what a revelation. Less mistakes. At this point I would not be surprised if he said, “We need to end the game with more points than the other team.”

(Chandler Bing voice) “Has there BEEN a less inspiring coach in Bucs history?”

  4. RagingBrisket Says:

Mistakes begin with the GM Licht

  5. SB~LV Says:

  6. Zzbucs Says:

Joe, I understand what you mean, but what about tackling?
You can have Barry Bonds and Tom Brady, but if your defense do not tackle you are not going to win games.
#45 should be ashamed!! Hard to watch, and what,s really funny is that he thinks he should be the highest payed player in his position!
Same as #24! He made an interception today, that the ball found him! Seems that he doesn,t care.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Here’s an interesting number for you… the Bucs opened -5.5 vs Carolina, which was bet down to -3.5 BEFORE this loss. That means the Bucs probably go into Carolina next week like -2, vs the worst team in football. Meanwhile, the Bucs were +13.5 vs the 49ers.

People need to look at those numbers when talking about this being a playoff team. They’re not even in the conversation and they’re barely a favorites at home vs the Panthers.

On a positive note, the Bucs are still in play for the #1 pick.

  8. ElioT Says:

    No Todd…

You don’t “know what to do”

You don’t “know how to do it”

    Dead Coach walking talk.

  9. DCBucsfan Says:

Same press conference every week. We are officially a bad team and per Oxford, insane because we expect a different result doing the same thing. I don’t expect to win every game but I do expect for this team to beat the bad teams and hang with good teams. We look just like the Jets did under Bowles. With the talent on this team, it is a shame that we have Bowles as the leadership instead of a coach with ideas more in alignment with today’s NFL. Until Bowles is replaced, fresh defensive ideas that fit our players are brought in and Canales given complete control of this offense, we will NOT succeed.

  10. Voice of Truth Says:

Our biggest mistake is employing Todd

  11. JA Says:

Bruce Arians-“No risk it, no biscuit.
Bowles—“No risk it sounds good to me.”
Bowles’s idea of clock management is remembering to charge his watch at night.
Bowles is The Mummy without the gauze. He moves as fast too.
Bowles always appears he’d prefer a nap over activity, and his teams reflect that image.
And he’s Baker Mayfield’s biggest fan.
And he’s our football coach. Makes sense in a world that is falling apart.

  12. StormyInFl Says:

The Bucs need to cut Bowles out of the organization for this team to start winning again.

  13. Pewter power Says:

“We have to cut out the mistakes for us to win ballgames.

Translation; we need to hire a head coach

  14. David Says:

Funny. Toilet B. is criticizing everyone but his trash qb for this loss. Fire this Trash Coach and start fresh with Trask.

  15. Jack Clark Says:

““We have to cut out the mistakes,” Bowles said.”

Didn’t he say that last week? And the week before that? And the week before that? 😂

  16. Mike D Says:

    Hey Todd-

Please do us all a favor and quit- your team is trash – inconsistent and not well coached – get out of Tampa and take your OC and coaching staff with you- you suck!

The Groundhog Day speech or “excuses” are over already.

  17. George R Says:

Rod you are correct. If Todd calls a time out with 3 minutes left. the game will go a deferent direction. They don’t get a penally for illegal procedure before the 2 minute warning

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Biggest mistake: Keeping Bowles as head coach.

Honestly…I wish the Glazers would fire him. Even if they mix the roster up, move things around…Bowles will cost us games.

If…IF…the Glazers fire Bowles…make Canales HC until the end of the season…I MIGHT go easier on Mayfield. Maybe. Big maybe.

  19. Bee Says:

Someone is gonna try to convince sane people that Baker played well today and should finish the season. 80 yds passing at halftime and didn’t attempt a pass past 10 yds til the 4th qtr. Baker hurts an already bad defense with so many 3 and outs, inaccuracies, sacks and turnovers.

Start Trask. The season is already done, let’s see what he can do.

  20. Bosch Says:

Bowels is beginning to distance from the players so he can cast the blame on them. Classic formula for losing the players. Get ready for 5 – 12.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We need to let the Panthers win. I said it before, and I’ll say it again.

  22. SlyPirate Says:

    Yes! BOWLES IS THE MISTAKE!!!

  23. David Says:

Baker is now 100% back to his trash mode holding the ball too long, fumbling and throwing picks at higher rates. He is now 35W-45L with 171 TD to 118 INT. at 61% comp.
BENCH BAKER and FIRE BOWLS NOW.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

    Bee Says:
Start Trask. The season is already done, let’s see what he can do.

    —-

You can’t do that — the Bucs are only one game out of first place! Mayfield gives us the best chance to go 6-11 and wrap up the NFC South and make a Super Bowl run!

  25. BucfaninMi Says:

Back up and rookies ALWAYS beat the Bucs. They’ll only win maybe a game the rest of the way. And not Carolina, rookie QB.

  26. gp Says:

Speaking of a mistake that needs to be cut out……. Like a Cancer!
He should not be allowed on the plane ride home.

  27. Another J Says:

    Todd Bowles is the mistake!

  28. David Says:

    TRASK, TRASK, TRASK Time.

  29. Bucsfan951 Says:

Todd’s biggest mistake today was not throwing the challenge flag for Mike Evans. That is the type of move that will turn the locker room against you, quick!

Also not using a timeout at the 3 min mark when you’re about to get the ball back, is dumb. Just bleed the time off of the clock smh. Get the ball back with time left for your offense to work. Don’t let precious time bleed away.

  30. David Says:

What is the difference if we lose with Baker or Trask. At least we can see what we have in Trask.

  31. Colonel Angus Says:

Fire this clown tonight. Same ol’ tired ass excuses.

  32. #99 the big fella Says:

Poor Dave Canales should of stayed in Seattle.. He is about to fired with Todd,

  33. David Says:

Let’s see, Toilet Bowl with Baker have lost to Back up, rookie qb’s and losing teams. If this is not the reason for change going forward then what it is ?

  34. ElioT Says:

    Bonzai

    We won’t have to.

Panthers will take it on their own.

  35. BucsBeast Says:

Coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance.

So he admits, he failed as a coach. They make the same mistakes week after week. That’s literally his job to fix.

  36. Bee Says:

    Rod

You’re right. I need to look at this from a different angle. Super Bowl run it is!

    #teampositive

  37. Jason m Says:

You suck Bowles and do does your team. Kick rocks and take your coaching staff with you.

  38. NE Fan Says:

Those that say you shouldn’t cut Bowles mid season, my question is why? How can you do any worse???

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Team is demoralized now. I said it was going to be a 6 game winning season for us. I am either on target or below it.

  42. Jack Clark Says:

“We know what to do. We work hard. We know how to do it. The team understands that. We see a lot of the same mistakes every week and they are not making the corrections. If they expect to win, they have to clean that up.”

Todd Bowles literally contradicted himself 😂 if our players “know what to do and how to do it” then we wouldn’t be “seeing a lot of the same mistakes every week and players not making the corrections”. This loss was more due to our coaches making mistakes in the choice of play calling, play designs, time management, not using timeouts effectively, not challenging plays we have a reasonable chance of winning, and not playing our edge pass rushers (YaYa Diaby and Watts instead of sorry as JTS) than our players making mistakes by not playing to their best ability.

  43. Popcorn Mike Says:

Tired of hearing the same BS. As a fan I can clearly see what’s happening. 2 or 3 times in the last 5 games Mayfield throws a interception in the red zone, a big play called back for a penalty, in the red zone over and over only to come away with a field goal and lately the defense is just giving up to much yardage The big thing to me is, the Bucs have played 11 games and it’s the same BS

  44. McBucky Says:

Clean up mistakes? No problem; cut Bowles loose.

  46. Arn Platz Says:

As much as I dislike saying this look at sean Payton and what he’s done in Denver. He took a train wreck and got everything up and running. That’s coaching. So yes it can be done but this coaching staff continues the same mistakes over and over again. You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result

  47. Havenbuc Says:

I’m sure Bowles isn’t coaching happy feet to dance behind a clean pocket & hold the ball. Those mistakes aren’t on you Bowles.

  48. David Says:

Has Toilet Bowl been fired yet ?????????????????????????

  49. ModHairKen Says:

Ok, Toddddd. Let’s cut out the mistakes, starting with your hiring.

  50. JD Still Says:

Trask really messed up today! He got in the game , almost completed a pass and was immediately taken out! The coaches were heard screaming at him,” What are you trying to do? Show up Mayfield ? You know we don’t allow that to happen around here!

  51. orlbucfan Says:

Just scanned the whole thread. Where are the Bucs fans? It’s the usual written crap.

  54. realistic-optimistic Says:

@adam, that gave me a good laugh

  55. adam from ny Says:

“todd can you really carry time outs in your back pocket for the next week?”

    answer:

    “not at this time”

  56. mark2001 Says:

Very simple, Todd. If you know what to do and repeatedly don’t do it, you either don’t give a spit, or the guy that thinks you know what to do, and that it will be effective, doesn’t know spit. As I think Joe might say, it might be the first one, or the second one, or both.

  57. Mr. Editor Says:

Team Glazer would not fire a coach in the middle of a season. A blowout loss to the Panthers might change their minds. The trend in the NFL is to fire a coordinator or assistant coach, however.

  58. Mike S Says:

It’s time to start Kyle Trask v Carolina

Yep. with credit to the Falcons this time Things never seem to line up right for Traskies to have a clear shot.

Its such a crying shame 🙂

HOWEVER I do thinks theres a chance. If I were Bowles now I might be looking for a scape goat to distract from his defense tuning into mud. His one claim to fame was defense – and it looks like the defense is getting worse week after week after week.

  61. August 1976 Buc Says:

They have now totally morphed into the 2023 version of a Lovie 2.0 Bucs team with Todd.

  63. DungyDance Says:

“‘We see a lot of the same mistakes every week and they are not making the corrections. If they expect to win, they have to clean that up.'”

Bowles is now referring to players as “they.” Is Bowles on a different team or part of a different club? This is a Freudian slip if I ever heard one.

  64. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles will have an answer for every question yet the same results every game. This is year 4-5 of this system, the vast majority of the defense has been in this system for years. The players drafted were picked to fit this system…..Bowles defense simply doesn’t work. The only time it’s looked capable was with a front seven that had JPP, Suh, Vea, White, LVD, Shaq…..anybody could coach that situation! We also had an offense putting up 30 per game, not hard to be good on defense when you have a superstar front seven AND top tier offense. Bowles is trash for a HC. He had Brady and couldn’t win in a weak division….he hand picked his QB and OC, and we’re worse. Let him keep making excuses all the way up to being canned. Top 7 pick will likely be top 5 by end of the season.

  65. Hopein1hand… Says:

I have always stuck by every coach the Bucs had because I believe that continuity breeds success but for the first time in 30some years I’m in for Harbuagh and Blake Corrum to come in and make Mayfield/the Bucs great. A RB with vision is what this great pass-blocking OL needs. The Bucs are fine at QB and the OL is workable. Corrum lacks straight line speed but he sees the way to 30-40 yard gains regularly for years and has scored 53 TD’s in the process. I know Goodell sided with the NCAA in the Michigan scandal and will suspend him but I’d love to see a barking Jim Harbaugh on the Bucs’ sideline even if we need to wait a year. Goodell deserves every boo he gets.

  66. Robert Says:

Coach Bowles, I like you. You seem like a very nice person, that being said you are 36-55 in your head coaching career. If I failed they many times at my job as you have at yours I would be fired. Sir with all due respect I think it is time for you to hang it up.

  67. stpetebucfan Says:

JIM HARBAUGH!!! He’s an actual winner wherever he’s gone at both college and NFL.

Break the Glazer bank to get him he does NOT effect the cap. Utilize his judgment and give him major roster control, sorry Jason but that’s reality. The only way anybody gets Harbaugh at this point is with $$$ yeah but he does NOT need more money…HE’s a winner…he will want a good team!!! Let him decide about QB…I trust him almost as much as Rod Munch! LOL OK snark font off.

Seriously this should be a no brainer for the franchise. Let the courtship begin behind the scenes…find out what Harbaugh will need. He is almost certainly over the college game bullspit and he’s done the impossible at Michigan beat Ohio State three years in a row!!!

  68. stpetebucfan Says:

BTW For those who insist on blowing a ton of draft capital on a College QB project if the Bucs get Harbaugh first he’ll provide far better advice than any of us on which direction to take. Hire him and give him Lovie Smith power over the roster. Jason will just have to step back for awhile and enjoy his job and WINNING!

  69. Davenport Says:

Its painful to hear this guy talk.
Skip the interviews. He’s a dead man walking

  70. Larrd Says:

    More good plays, too!

  71. Not Says:

    Please Bowles.
How pathetic , the guy telling us we’re only one game out of first.
The Bucs do not belong in the playoffs.
Let’s get a good draft pick and pick a new QB for a new HC!
Glazers should pass on the $$ from one lousy playoff games and shoot for more $$ down the road with a better coach and QB.
I sure ain’t paying for my season ticket playoff game. It’s resale value would be below face value.
