“I’ve Just Got To Own Up To It”

November 9th, 2023

Admits improvement needed.

Bucs fans are still cursing into their bowls of breakfast cereal about how the defense let a rookie Texans quarterback march 75 yards in 40 seconds to beat the Bucs.

You know who else is upset? Carlton Davis, who was beat for the winning touchdown and other scores.

Davis, meeting with the local pen and mic club yesterday, fully owned up to the final touchdown and used the word “brutal” several times.

“The play – everything was wrong,” Davis said. “I don’t have an explanation, honestly. What you’ve seen is what happened. I’ve just got to own up to it. [It is] hurtful to watch, to replay it in your head – especially knowing the caliber of player that I am and the standards that I have. It’s one of the worst things that can happen.

“It’s the brutal truth of playing [cornerback] – whenever you’re not on point, it’s for the whole world to see. It can be for all the marbles. That’s just the position that I play. I take it with pride and I love what I do.

“I’m going to get better and I’ve moved on past it. I just want to get that nasty taste out of my mouth.”

To Davis’ credit, he refused to make excuses or dodge responsibility. In fact, when asked if playing so much zone defense was putting him in a bad position to make plays because he is more of a man-to-man corner, Davis said that’s no excuse. He’s paid to play defense, no matter what sort of coverage is used.

Joe has a hunch the Titans (Joe really wishes he could refer to them by just using the first syllable like we all refer to the Jaguars as the “Jags.”) and rookie quarterback Will Levis will be testing Davis on Sunday when the Bucs play zone.

CBs getting paid what he’s making should never have games like that. He sure is wrecking sh%t. Another whiff by GM Licht.

  3. LOL Says:

Jeff Dont curse the man like that BRO

    LOL

There you have it folks! Bowles could have easily made the same statement. This team has MAJOR MAJOR issues with the current roster AND the current coaching staff. This organization has embarrassed the fan base to a degree where the apathy is at critical mass. How many times has this defensive genius Bowles allowed a rookie QB to embarrass us? This bumbling fool is no genius on ANY level. Lastly when Bowles and his entire staff are fired at season’s end that will end his career as a HC. He’ll never be hired in that capacity ever again.

  5. Rick Says:

it’s a complicated defense with lots of disguises and takes a while to learn. It just feels like every time we play zone we just get shredded with easy completion after easy completion. Like there’s always one weak link and it’s usually right in the middle of the field in front of the QB.

  6. Bbro Says:

You can’t get those 49 seconds back and the only thing that will make up for that is being dominant for the remaining games. If that doesn’t happen get rid of the slackers and bring in young talent that can be taught.

  7. Bosch Says:

Hey Joe. Just call them the “Tites”. Or…. The Oilers.

  8. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Rick

Bowles has. Even here for five years with this defense, Davis too if I’m not mistaken.

    “It’s complicated “ is BS.

Largest staff in the NFL.. worst coaching.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Davis … ‘The play – everything was wrong. I don’t have an explanation, honestly.’

That’s BS. To fix anything, you’ve gotta have an idea of what went wrong. That’s what analysis is supposed to do for you. Other than that, you’re just stabbing at potential solutions (aka, peeing in the wind).

Our whole defense looked out of sorts for that entire game (better in the 1st half admittedly, but still lacking). Davis’ “We played like dog crap” sums it up very nicely. That’s all that needs to be said. Now FIX IT.

  11. John Sinclear Says:

Lest you all forget – this is a team sport. There were 11 guys on the field. More than one of them was responsible for the end result!

  12. Joe Says:

Hey Joe. Just call them the “Tites”. Or…. The Oilers.

Calling them the “Oilers” is like crapping all over the Houston metro area. Joe is fond of Houston (the city).

    Get to school boy

  14. Dacake Says:

Carlton Davis reminded me of Kevin Bacon in Animal House against the Texans. Thank you sir may I have another, thank you sir may I have another, etc.

  15. My Momma Says:

CD isn’t going to throw any teammate under the bus. On that last play, Delaney was out of position. That’s what blew that play.

My Momma wonders if CD is still hobbled by his recent toe injury. Can he play man right now? She doubt’s it. He looks slow and doesn’t have the change of direction he normally has. He’s playing hurt.

  16. Jeff Says:

    Oilers 30 Yucs 17

  17. zzbucs Says:

I usually don´t get against players, with the exeption of CDIII and Dean…. I just don´t like them to be here next year…..Just don´t like them

  18. Coquiro Says:

You are a thief…you got your money and now u are laying low. Shameful…you and Dean both.

  19. larrd Says:

Most really good cornerbacks get burned at times and have bad games. I’ll bet Ronde did. Thing is, they make up for it with INTs and other big plays.

  20. ElioT Says:

Look for a massive game from DeAndre Hopkins.

  21. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So let me get this straight…he has been in the system for what, 4 years now and just got a big fat contract and NOW he wants to owns up to it? What an imbecile.

  22. Curse of Gruden Says:

Davis will give up 2 on Sunday.
    He blows.

  23. TonySoprano Says:

Yeah he cares so much and is so eager to better himself, he sat out practice today

  24. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Jose, I call them the Flaming Thumbtacks since that is what their logo suggests.

  25. D-Rok Says:

    When Joe says,
“Joe has a hunch the Titans (Joe really wishes he could refer to them by just using the first syllable like we all refer to the Jaguars as the “Jags.”)”

Just call ’em Teats, Joe. We will all know what you mean.

(Sorry but not much positive about the team to provide insightful analysis, so I’m relying on sarcasm and satire to get me through each losing, pathetic week).

*WAVES POM-POMS* Go Bucs ? LOL

  26. D-Rok Says:

    Ooops, my bad. The Teats.

  27. Mark Says:

Ya’ll don’t want to hear this, but Davis is being a stand up guy and covering for Delaney. That’s quarters coverage and the guy covering the far right deep zone isn’t supposed to chase the guy across the middle. Delaney was supposed to be there. Richard Sherman doesn’t lie.

  28. realistic-optimistic Says:

I liked his press conference. Really hope he can put something better on the field for the rest of this season.

  29. realistic-optimistic Says:

He came back strong after Tyreek roasted him. Hoping to see that again this week.

  30. Kidfloflo Says:

He needs 3 picks Sunday, 2 for TDS to get people off his jock! Anybody see that turn around coming?? Me neither

  31. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

How is it that our corners are paid millions and millions of dollars and yet they don’t even intercept the ball at all?? Izien, the undrafted rookie, had a few in the beginning of the season and that was it.

  32. 1#bucsfan Says:

He has 1 bad game and y’all are crying. I’ve watched DB55 have a bad game I’ve watched sapp have a bad game and I’ve watch Brady have multiple bad games. Quit belly aching geez. Bunch of babies

  33. Boltsfan17 Says:

He’s a terrible football player. Always has been and always will be.

  34. 5220Buc Says:

No one player caused all of what happened on Sunday. So don’t blame it all on this guy. As a defense, they QUIT on Sunday. Seen it in college, but not really in the pro game (until near the end of the season with teams that are completely out of the playoffs). We need a whole new group that wants to be here. They whine about money and contracts all the time, but forget to show up for games. Dump everyone and start over. Might as well bring up some of the practice squad guys at this point. Probably would not have much of a different result.

  35. bob in valrico Says:

I think Davis is a better player than what he showed last week. I like the fact that he is making no excuses. His not participation on the injury report for toe
instead of foot previously reported clears some things up. It seems he may be nursing a turf toe injury and that is not an injury that just goes away while playing with it. See Carl Nicks.

  36. garro Says:

Kudo’s to Davis for owning it and for admitting that Ronde is right.

We have some others who need to follow suit on this defense. I have seen too many guys dogging it and not giving effort. We started this season with guys flowing to the ball and, gang tackling. I have not seen that for weeks now. BTW Bowles won’t do it, but he needs to own his part in the fiaso Sunday!

    Go Bucs!

  37. DJB Says:

All these defenders with their drag-em-down style of tackling are awful. I can’t think of one light-em-up tackle this season.
