Saved By Baker Mayfield

October 28th, 2023

This play resulted in a Baker Mayfield scramble for positive yards.

Joe sure hopes Todd Bowles and Dave Canales bought Baker Mayfield a 4-pack of Big Storm beer and a few orders of their amazing Buffalo shrimp tacos for his heroics late Thursday.

If not for Mayfield’s extraordinary unwillingness to be tackled, he would have been sacked easily and crumbled quickly to the turf under Bills defensive lineman Jordan Phillips with 3:11 remaining of a game that appeared out of reach.

It was 4th-and-8 at the Bills’ 39 yard line as the Bucs trailed 24-10. Phillips was all over Mayfield, as many Bills defensive players were earlier in the game. Joe believes if not for Mayfield’s internal fire and strong escapability, Phillips wouldn’t have gone so ferociously at Mayfield and ended up with a fist full of Mayfield’s face mask.

The result was first down Bucs after the penalty and Mike Evans scored a touchdown four plays later.

If Mayfield had been sacked by Phillips, it’s a safe bet the Bucs would have struggled to score another touchdown.

At best, the Tampa Bay defense would have held the Bills to a 3-and-out and the Bucs likely would have been attempting a full-field drive with no timeouts trailing by two scores with 2-plus minutes remaining.

Instead, Mayfield helped make the game close and artfully set up the controversial Hail Mary that put the Bucs one Chris Godwin turn from a win.

Joe’s point here is that Bowles and Canales would be getting torched by fans and media (much worse than they are today) if not for that wiped out sack. Fueled by Mayfield’s hunger for every blade of grass, the Bucs’ finish was insipired and the team is now viewed as one that battles and plays with fire — even if they didn’t show a lot of that early in the game.

Thanks, Baker.

This game should of been out of reach early due to offense and Baker specifically. But the defense doesn’t quit. I need big storm just to watch our QB. It’s a bucs life.

  3. Hodad Says:

Quality loss. Thanks Baker for making it look closer then it ever was. Keep stacking those quality, gutsy, moxie, losses.

  4. DBS Says:

On the other hand. Had a scared coach gone for a field goal earlier and made it? This TD drive means get in to field goal range for a tie as it turns out. Then OT.

During TC I was rooting big time for trask. After these guys I have become a fan of baker. He’s putting his life on the line for us. Also he isn’t playing bad. Besides his 1 terrible int against the falcons he’s not playing good. He hasn’t bin perfect he’s deff missed some throws but I like what I’ve seen and believe he gives us the best shot to win games.

Keep making fun of Baker, you I’ll-informed, pathetic excuses for Bucs fans. Baker was under constant attack by the Bills but he and his team still managed to fight through it and make it VERY close. HAIL MARY! The Bucs are far from out of it and Baker and company will make it happen. You heard it here first.

How many more losses and 180 yardish games do we have to suffer before there is a QB change. 3 game losing streak and these guys, and Joe, wants to stick with Mayfield. Todd has bet his job on Mayfield. Hows that working out? I like Bowles but if keeps Mayfield in too long, he deserves what he gets.

  11. HC Grover Says:

That was a great loss. Good grief. One of the best losses ever. Maybe they will have another great loss Mayfield can save next week.

  12. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Is this a joke? Thanking Baker for a garbage time TD that was gifted to them with a prevent defense and 2 4th down penalties?

    They lost.

    What delusion.

OH! So that’s why you root for Baker. You are satisfied with close games, not wins.

Well to be honest, Baker Mayfield is playing better than in the past. In the past, he won less than 40% of his games.

I agree. What a waste of a draft pick if this becomes a losing season and we still don’t know what we have in Trask. And if they bench Baker and we somehow start winning with Trask, with the playoffs out of reach, pink slips should fly then too

I’m confused. You think the Bucs actually had a chance of winning the game?

Personally, I predicted a loss and it happened. I’m not proud of it…but…the face that Trask isn’t the starter now? If the Glazers fired coaches during seasons…ever…now would be the time to start.

  29. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

We all hope for steady improvement and a winning season. If we aren’t seeing progression on both sides of the ball, then I’d at least want to look at the possible future with Trask. Doing this 18 points a game gritty crap will get us nowhere. And our D is worst in the league on 3rd down due to “miscommunication” or “missed assignments”. That is on you Bowels. Fix it or blow it up

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Bee

I agree 100 percent. But at least we could find out what Trask has to offer.

Problem is…I think Bowles will have to be forced to make a change by the owners.

  31. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Trask might get killed, or he might stand “tall” in the pocket and deliver strikes. I would like to actually like to see that play out if “gritty 18 points per game happy feet” doesn’t improve. Hoping he does, move on if not – and quickly.

Wy don’t get your pressure up. Reading between the lines I kinda like the Kyle bois so vocal. Its the digital expression of the steam coming out of their ears because Thursday was supposed to be such a blow out it was baker’s last start for sure. Some were even doing a victory lap before the game they were so sure.

I even almost heard the sound of a steam engine on game night from ROd’s ears. He actually wrote what others didn’t – that the finish meant He had to endure Baker for weeks more. What a bomb by Baker at the end? You couldn’t have a loss go worse for Traskites. .

I’m not sure about making the playoffs though. Mostly because the defense looks really sketchy until teams get to the red zone. Chances are excellent though the offense gets a lot better and am really impressed with Baker and ints. He’s coming close to a season of work ( from Rams to now) with a pretty low int rate and ranked top half of the league in general. IF Canales finally wakes up and rolls baker out by design some – sorry for the traskites – he may very well make league highlight plays like he nearly made Thursday night and used to make in Cleveland.

Also Team would easily be 5 and 2 with a run game – minimum 4-3 too.

SO though I myself like to engage them for fun – let the traskites fume. They have no impact on Bowles. RIght now they have nothing else.

  33. JK Says:

  35. Hodad Says:

We’re looking like a top ten pick in a QB rich draft. Baker is on a one year prove it deal, and Trask has one year left. Bucs will be using their first pick on a QB.

Are you really that impressed with what Mayfield has done? Are you positive Trask can’t do as well? Should we not find out what our 2nd round pick can do at some point? Try hard to follow along.

  38. HC Grover Says:

    ————–

74B thats always been a rational argument to want to see Trask this season but here is where it falls of the cliff of logic – twice

    1) You don’t need half or even three quarters of a season to evaluate trask – unless you think he sucks and needs the time to not suck which means – you know he sucks.

OF course if the team falls completely out of contention and can’t make the playoffs like traskites say is going to happen because of Baker you ARE going to see Trask.

SO either Trask fans are clueless and don’t understand how the NFL works or they are not as certain as they claim that the team won’t make the playoffs

    2) It continues to be asinine to think a Coach should risk his career so you can see what Trasks looks like. You are going to call for his head either way so he has every right to make the decision he sees fit without regard to evaluation for when he is not here. He is one game out of the playoff race with his present QB1 where pundits never expected him to be AND THINK

He has only lost ONE game he was expected to win and thats ATL.

  41. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Pretty sure they know what they got with Trask. He’s been at practice, right? OTA’s, etc. Why would they not dress him for 2 years on game day? Pretty. Obvious. Not everybody can make the jump to the pros? Why is he on the roster? He’s cheap

  42. Tony Says:

Of course Baker is gonna get blamed for a bunch of everything but the OL is no help. They’re not helping him much. They need to consider drafting probably two OL if they don’t go out & sign one in the offseason & not some scrub OL either.

  43. Pewter Pride Says:

Why do you continue to prop this guy up as if he has been anything more than below average at best. Oh, because you anointed him the starter before the rigged competition where Trask showed he was better.

  44. Old School Bucs Says:

This defense is shaky at best and defense wins games. The oline sucks and offense scores points. This season the Bucs can only show and try to play hard, but this team is soft and undisciplined.

So next year, if it is me, I am rebuilding from where rebuilding begins. The oline and the D lol be!!!!!!!

Mayfield can stay, I like his tenacity. Get him a Oline he will lead wins.
But hey, no one will listen. Bowles will continue to meander around with more BS. Talk of skill players, and the media along with Joe will talk about what an improvement this team us without Brady! 😂😭🤣😭😂😭🤣 . Clown show central!!!!!

  45. Mike S Says:

If I’m going to take this post seriously, then the single facemask penalty likely stopped the narrative from steamrolling into full on Trask getting the ball – so Bowles gets to fight on at least another week of status quo, despite the third loss in a row – however undeserved that evaluation may be.

Playing in Houston is going to be an easier road for the Bucs and Bowles to hold onto the dream before the hand is forced if they slip to 3-5 with 4 consecutive losses.

But again, this is the definition of Baker Mayfield just good enough to lose games. It could not be any more clearly defined.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

Hodad … ‘Bucs will be using their first pick on a QB.’

Completely agree Hodad, regardless of how well Mayfield, Trask or anyone else does this year. Draft the best QB who ‘fits’ when we pick and let him sit for a year. Mayfield isn’t our long-term answer. Trask probably feels like he’s been treated rather poorly by this organization, and my guess is that he’ll gladly move on after his 4th year here.

  47. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Agree Bowels will stick with Mayfield, but that might not be best for the franchise. Also agree we need to build the trenches first.

Maybe, just maybe, Trask is a gamer – shines under the lights. If the season goes south, I say we e find out. What do we (the Bucs – not Bowels) have to lose?

Why do you continue to prop this guy up as if he has been anything more than below average at best.

    ——-

Probably because we have better Math skills. He is in the top half of 32 teams starters and to be “at best below average ” he would have to be below 18 for sure

Plus since we know you wish to compare him to trask on the bench we have to include backups which makes baker 16 out 64

Trust me – 16 is not the average of 64

  50. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Tony is really impressed with our QB. Wish I was. Higher expectations. Trask may be worse. A high draft pick may be worse. However, mediocre sucks.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

Mayfield showed incredible moxy with that 27-play drive that ate up 29 minutes of the clock, which was kept alive by two dumb Buffalo penalties. That spunk is what you want at quarterback.

  52. ScottyMack Says:

The Bucs “fans” here are imposters, if not absolute morons. Kyle Trask would never be an option for this team unless your goal is to really tank the season where surely the Bucs would be winless with that statue as QB.

Those predicting doom and gloom either are clueless about the talent (or lack thereof) by most team in the NFL or have not looked at the remaining schedule for the Bucs.

Tampa Bay plays exactly one team that the surely have no chance to win against (the 49ers) and another one that a win is unlikely (Jaguars). The rest are, even for Bucs trashers and skeptics, toss-ups, at worst. 8 out of the final 10 games are against teams that are certainly no better than the Bucs and probably even worse.

  53. ScottyMack Says:

    Bills 42, Dolphins 20.

    Bills 24, Bucs 18.

I guess by the judgement of fake Bucs fans on this website, the Bucs are clearly better than the Dolphins based on one game.

If you’re a Bucs fan, and not just a bandwagon rider, you always expect the worse. Until 2021, the Bucs were the most losing franchise in all of professional sports, until the Minnesota Timberwolves finally overtook the Bucs for that title. However, the Bucs are still the most losing NFL franchise, and if the Glazers want to retake the ‘all of sports’ title, just leave Bowles and Mayfield in place for another couple of seasons.

  61. Rod Munch Says:

UKBuccaneer – People seem to misunderstand the Baker hate.

With Trask, it’s a wildcard. We don’t know for certain that he’ll stink, like we do know with Mayfield. If Trask is a disaster, then great, you get a top QB next year. If Trask turns out to actually be good, then great, you got your future QB.

Mayfield has no future for the Bucs, or any team, unless the goal is to go 6-12.

Personally I’d rather got 3-14 and get the #1 pick, than go 6-12 with the #8 pick and completely miss out on a franchise QB.

Todd and Baker VS Demico Ryans and CJ Stroud, this is probably not going to end well

3-5 limping home to give up 200 yards rushing to DHenry

And then San Fran, likely at 3-6

At 3-7 does Todd get run and Trask get the ball then??!!

I always liked Baker, and then again (in recent times) I liked Tebow, Mariota and Jameis – except the latter’s off field dumbasserry mishaps. None of them have been highly successful… guess what, most NFL quarterbacks are not.

I’d liked to see Baker have an amazing comeback, but not seeing it. Some is on him – some on the team/coaches. From the beginning the low scoring has been a warning.

Oh please. Y0u have LOWER expectations

Lower expectations for what you need to have for a running back

lower expectations for the amount of decent WR you need

    lower expectations for the oline

    and lower expectations for TE

what the complaining fanbase has is delusional expectations for ONE position – QB

    Its Brady Rental SYndrome

Brady made you a contender and so you think any QB that doesn’t do that instantly by Himself alone sucks. Only this time the fan base is so delusional they aren’t talking about some generationally great player thats played in the nfl – but they actually think theres a reasonable chance this magical one QB is on their bench and the evil Bowles is hiding this super world beater diamond in the rough that can overcome no RB, having only two good WR , a sucking TE and ZERO other weapons

Disney may be nearby but Aladdin’s Lamp s was still just a movie.

P.S. Alot of you think a deep QB draft means what it doesn’t. You guys are looking for a generational talent super star to overcome all the other missing pieces. Thats not what deep QB class means and you ARE NOT getting the top pick or even top two. Why? because you wish and all parties are committed to Evans hitting his numbers so need a good enough offense for that. Plus you all want to maintain a good defense.

Other teams will beat you to the tank for the top spots. Sorry you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

My only point is to give the kid a shot if the season is lost. Why not? Brady doesn’t see the field is Bledsoe doesn’t get hurt. They certainly didn’t know Brady was THAT good until the lights came on. To the point – very long shot that Trask is our answer, but let’s maybe find out – no? Hoping Mayfield is the guy, but let’s be realistic here too. You are comparing apples to oranges. The Patriots were already Super Bowl bound before Bledsoe got injured.

Tom Brady himself could not win with out run blocking *clears throat* I mean “Byron Leftwhich failed offensive coordinator” running offense so there is no need to prove that Trask could not either

  78. Mike S Says:

    —-

TB straight question – would appreciate a straight answer. There are around ten weeks left in the season.

Why do we need ten weeks to evaluate a QB that we have practiced and seen for three years? Theres ZERO question if the season is definitely lost you are going to see Trask. Thats a non issue. The issue is why should Bowles go to that at week 8? Really shouldn’t need more than 4 games max to see if preseason improvements translate to real opponents playing real Meaningful games. At that point its for additional evaluation not winning games.

  81. Mike S Says:

Tony If Baker goes on a win streak run he keeps his job. If he loses Trask comes in.

Or Baker could get hurt and we see Trask.

Its pretty simple. I think we all know Bowles loves Mayfield. He’s going to keep running him out there as long as the division is in play. Many of us disagree with that, but that’s pretty much a thing we can guess on.

If he thought Trask was a hair better than Baker, you don’t think Trask would have been the starter?

  88. Mike S Says:

Tony that’s not something I made up. Many people feel that way.

Its already been mentioned. The bigger the sample size the more its true.

Baker has a losing record – and we’re seeing in real time how that played out elsewhere because its playing out here. I spoke about it extensively when the Bucs signed him. He’s not a big high percentage guy and he’s not a big yards/attempt guy. When you ask him to carry the team he throws picks. He’s in conservative game manager mode right now.

He’s just good enough to hook you in and give you false hope with gritty play, but the body of work shows he loses more than he wins.

Look at the Steelers for example. Mike Tomlin rode Big Ben for 14 years to a winning record. Bill Belichick with Brady too. As good as those guys are as head coaches as soon as their franchise QBs retired the magic left too. Its pretty obvious.

Its all about the QB. You need a historic defense and/or a historic running game to win without a big time QB.

This kid Trask has the IT factor. He’s a quiet assassin who turns it on in the big moment. Absolutely killed teams. A juggernaut at Florida. Gator fans know this kid has heart. We know. We saw the stones he’s got. He could be something great for this team and we deserve to find out.

Better than Baker Mayfield’s dink and dunk offense with Canales scared to call a pass play fearing the pick 6 in the 3rd quarter of Thursday night’s game. Trask won’t let Buc’s big time receivers go without targets – and they will be 15-30 yards downfield. It has a chance to be explosive. What we’re seeing now ain’t explosive. Its garbage.

    Irrelevant

MUltiple sports list wins and losses for players. You aren’t talking about stats your are trying to assign blame or responsibility. SO its garbage

In your forever failed argument teams wouldn’t need other stars players to surround a QB. Owner’s could just pocket the savings and keep winning because

because errr losses are a QB stat.

IF that wasn’t enough your stat includes his rookie year and a year playing injured. So its vacant on multiple levels. Take your pick

  92. D1 Says:

    Tony,

Solid takes over and over! Well done!

  93. Mike S Says:

D1 Trask will push the ball down field and find the seam routes that don’t presently exist in the Mayfield offense. The passing game will open up. He’ll make explosive plays.

The pass then will set up the run – Bucs will add 30-40 more yards of offense per game.

  96. Mike S Says:

Tony don’t be pedantic. Yes you need a team. You cannot just run out Tom Brady and a JV squad and expect to win the SB. Belichick went with the formula of Tom Brady + Very Good Defense and that was EXTREMELY successful. When they added Moss and Gronk they were lights out good.

But you can’t run out an above average defense, non-existent running game team with a below average QB and expect to make any hay whatsoever. You become what we are now.

The Trent Dilfers of the world are a one year flash in the pan – right time right squad kind of deal. Not a sustainable formula for success – its catching lightning in a bottle.

Click on my name to see what having a real franchise QB does for wins.

This idea that the Bucs are going to build into something over multiple years with Bowles and Baker is pretty absurd. You think his formula works? I think its clear it does not. It didn’t work with Tom Brady. It sure as heck isn’t working with Baker Mayfield. Todd is a very good DC. Again his body of work as HC shows that he is not good. Right now Bucs are 7th from last in yardage against. No running game. Mediocre QB play. They’re surviving off a +8 turnover number and now they have a losing record in the worst division in football.

It boggles the mind you want to double down on this.

  97. Mike S Says:

Bakerbucs Tom Brady is the GOAT. Baker will be either a backup next year – or in broadcasting.

  98. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

  99. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Whoa…time out. The QB touches the ball more than any other player.

They affect games more than any other player on a week to week basis.

A QB’s overall record is probably linear to their over all stats. AT least over time.

Good QBs win and crappy QBs lose. There are exceptions to every rule but we are pretty close to saying…Baker is exactly what his record says he is…garbage.

  102. D1 coach Says:

    Mike S,

    Appreciate your reply!

I agree Trask throws a beautiful seam ! But this offense isn’t designed for a vertical passing attack. So do you think, based on what you’ve seen from canales, that he would change the orientation of the pass game to suit trask?

The other concern is the offensive line protection specifically in the middle. This would not be a position to put trask in. He stands tall in the pocket, no worries about batted balls, but he’s not athletic and that makes him more prone to sacks! Trade off batted balls to sacks I don’t know the stats but that could be 1-1!

Last, Trask was the guy drafted in the 2nd round to replace Brady. He fits the arians pocket passer vertical passing scheme perfectly. If Arians was here today, I think trask would be starting. Maybe, had to say without seeing practice but a hunch.
But Canales was hired and the offense has moved away from the vertical scheme and the ideal QB is different in this scheme. Canales is not looking for a prototypical 6-4 pocket passer . Heck, the league is not either. This doesn’t give trask a lot of potential suitors for his talents.

  103. Tony Marks Says:

“Bill Belichick with Brady too. As good as those guys are as head coaches as soon as their franchise QBs retired the magic left too. Its pretty obvious.””

Where in the world did I say teams can win without a good QB? Nowhere . You just confused yourself as to the argument. Thats like saying because the bulls stopped winning after Michael retired Michael was solely responsible for winning games – a fact proven wrong in that case by the fact that MJ didn’t start winning rings until he got help.

Brady already had Belichick from day one starting and Bill was already building the pieces getting out of salary cap issues and scouring for good players. Brady has had some great players to play with like the legendary Rob Gronkowski All of which Yet AGAIN debunks your essential claim wins and losses are all a matter of just the QB.

“When you ask him to carry the team he throws picks”

I guess you really proved you point since this team with essentially ZERO running game has asked him to carry the team and he’s thrown 4 for nearly half the season. Do you think before you make posts?

“This kid Trask has the IT factor. He’s a quiet assassin who turns it on in the big moment. Absolutely killed teams. A juggernaut at Florida.”

oh jesh Yet Another traskite trying to instantly translate COllege to pro. Obviously since Qbs are responsible for winning by themselves Trask the assassin that tears up teams has won every champion game he has played in (oops) and Bowles is just trying to hide this Team tearer from the world.

In fact the whole NFL is in on the conspiracy to hide Trask . How else can we explain such a generational talent falling to the 2nd round.

Too crazy . and not because I write off any Player so young. I’ve followed the NFL too long for that but because as a fan of his You aren’t helping him with such silly arguments.

We’ve been over why Bruce loved Gabbert and Brady not liking rookies many times on JBF. We also heard how much Bowles wanted Baker too.

    Circumstance plays into this situation.

Trask just needs an opportunity. That’s all that’s being asked here.

Why the big effort to keep him from stepping between the white lines? Baker is no world beater. He’s really mediocre. What’s the fear? He doesn’t play well? Bucs get better draft capital. It’s a win- win situation.

One additional point I realize I missed

I don’t know whether you thought you could fool others or you just fooled yourself but you didn’t make your Argument of baker’s winning percentage being the same to your number ( which includes his rookie year and injured year playing ) last week because you couldn’t

and you couldn’t for the entire season.

You waited till we had a three game stretch where we weren’t expected to win two of them anyway and now you want to present the comparison closed as evidence for your point.

Thats asinine . Thats like having elections and hurriedly trying to close the polls ahead of schedule when you get to the percentage you want. Sorry dude . You can’t fool all the people all of the time. You can’t even make the argument you are making till the end of the season ( and it would still falil for otehr reasons). You were just trying to cook and close the numbers when you thought they would fit your trask narrative best.

Player movement where Qbs hace done better and worse is another area that debunks you but I dont even need it. You’ve been entirely debunked already.

  110. D1 Says:

    Mostly peaceful,

Regarding different play calls! I’m genuinely curious as to how canales would adjust. I don’t see many rollouts, waggles, boots etc that play to baker’s strengths so I just don’t know if they would or not!

Regarding QBs , look at the last few years of draft picks. Trevor Lawrence and the kid from LA chargers, they are 6-5 or better but Trevor is unreal athletic and moves like a guy 6ft.

There’s just is not many college programs where they run as a pro style offense.
Major programs , 4 but the rest are moving to more mobile dual threat or more athletic QBs. It’s also at the high school level. So the recruiting pool is smaller and the draft pool is even smaller. Offensives in the NFL are changing their approach to mobile QBs.

Mahomes is the new prototype. The league scouts on the ability of a QB to create plays off script. They also use a frame to view plays made after a protection breakdown and the ability to make a play / avoid a negative loss. There’s why mobility is more valuable. Salary cap means you can afford a great team and a game manager or pay a qb and expect him to cover deficiencies.

  111. DaBirdsFan Says:

I’m definitely not a fan of the Bucs, or the Bills, but Buffalo 100% exposed Tampa this week. Let me explain…

1.Baker IS scared. He’s scared to throw down field because he’s scared of throwing INT’s.
    2. The Bucs are VERY predictable. Everything is short. (White has 13 catches alone the past 2 weeks, 7 this week and the other 3 WR’s combined for what, 8?)
    3. The O-line is NOT at fault…when a team is THAT predictable, a defense can blitz the living *bleep* out the opposing team with zero worries of being beaten over the top.
    4. This is EXACTLY who Mayfield is, and always will be. He will never handle blitzes because of his size. Did anyone not notice how rattled he was in the pocket???

Good luck the rest of the year if Mayfield stays in there. Every team is going to model the Bills approach, and I don’t see a different outcome from Baker. He’s just mediocre.

I’ve also been called several names in the last 24 hours and initiated name calling with no one. Never assume your own emotions into other people’s texts.

To your question – trask will get his opportunity (under your assumption he hasn’t already and Bowles found him legitimately not ready). Who has said otherwise? No one. Baker is likely to be injured and if it goes to the point where we are actually fully out of the playoff picture OF COURSE trask is going to play. More power to him too. He’s been patient and calm it appears.

That and the fact he’s still under contract after this year denies no opportunity for Trask coming up. I’ve participated for about a week here and its ENTIRELY Trask fans I see getting all hyped up and angry with anyone that doesn’t agree with them, Not once have I seen Baker fans or any one else say Trask can’t get a chance

Nope its not – it can be but when you have

NO RUN Game……Lousy tight end play….your coach says point blank he cant name a designated WR3and your QB1 rarely has a clean pocket and has to bail out the Oline with at least three houdini escapes from sacks every game

Its just desperation for a one player fix to ignore all that and blame the QB. However its not even about fixes for a whole slew of traskites probably including you. Not a single one of you have EVER set a single standard for Trask to meet if he starts . You want him in there the rest of the season no matter what happens Which proves its nothing about winning or losing or fixing the offense this year.

  116. D1 Says:

    Dabirds fan,

    Exposed?
    How?

We haven’t been able to run the ball all year.

The offense is designed around short passes and taking a shot long occasionally and once the running game starts working enough to shift the defense.
Predictably, we’ve been the most predictable offense in the league since week 1 2nd half.

Offensive line is a problem if your center and right guard get blown up play after play. And you can’t run the ball. Problem

Bakers size ? Not at all sure how that works. He is eluding sacks left and right.
Maybe a smaller QB would be harder to find?
Don’t know where you are going.

Blitz is not beaten over the top unless it’s a free safety blitz. Don’t believe I saw Buffalo do that once !

Baker can’t carry the team, I don’t know why anyone would expect him too .
Tom Brady, the greatest of all time , couldn’t last year. Baker no freaking way. Trask, the same.

And it’s not their fault, it’s fans and their fantastical thinking .
Baker was on 4 teams yes? When exactly did he get saddled with mvp expectations? Trask a 2nd rounder is not going to turn around the offense. He’s a rookie!

Exposed is more fans realizing that they have expectations that exceed the players and staff abilities. Instead we see some pin their hopes on a one player change!

Sorry, but the exposed part you discovered, is well known by every poster here.

  118. D1 Says:

    Tony ,

If games in the nfl are won in the trenches!
Is it not true that they are lost there too!

  119. Bucfan94 Says:

    I’ll say this…

As long as our O-Lone is playing the way they are, no QB in the league will be putting up elite numbers. And before people mention Mahomes, he can’t do sh!t with a bad O-Line. Bucs proved that. Take away his legs and protection and he’s average tbh.

  120. Defense Rules Says:

D1 … ‘Games are won in the trenches’ is a long-time saying, but I suspect that we both know it only tells part of the story. Victory STARTS in the trenches IMO, but OLinemen rarely score TDs or kick FG or make safeties to put points on the board. It’s always a TEAM EFFORT that makes the difference between winning & losing. Yet fans love to find heroes when we win and scapegoats when we lose.

Tony … Kudos on some great analysis of what’s going on with our TEAM, and especially about Mayfield & Trask. The Bucs are a young, inexperienced team & they’re gonna make mistakes as they learn how to win as a team. Some QBs can compensate for others’ mistakes (Mahomes?); others not-so-much. Baker IMO is kind of a tweener … good escapability (at the start of the season especially), but doesn’t seem to have the skillset necessary to consistently move the team down the field to score points. Better than some for sure, but he doesn’t seem to be the long-term answer for the Bucs.

I don’t have Clue One if Trask is the answer, but I’ve personally seen enough of Mayfield. He was never coming back next year (if he has a Geno Smith year & does well, the Bucs couldn’t afford to pay him what he’d ask for, and if he does poorly they wouldn’t want him back). We’re drafting a QB in Rnd 1 regardless of what happens this year IMO (we have a LOT of other needs, but none higher than finding a quality starting QB). Trask MIGHT be that guy (depends on how Canales uses him I think) or he might not be. We’ve lost 4 out of our last 5; kinda looks like a replay of how Panthers started off last year (except they didn’t win the first 2).

  121. Former Browns Fan Says:

Love it that Squealer fans are here. Their team stinks and they wish they had Mayfield instead of Nosepickens. LOL

  122. D1 Says:

    Defense rules,

I used an old cliché to start the ball moving in a different direction. Absolutely, football is the ultimate team sport. 10 guys do their job and one doesn’t the play fails.

The idea that a QB is responsible for all the woes the offense is experiencing is ok , but not realistic! The offense has major issues that start with the scheme and OC. There’s no way that anyone could transform the Arians offense into the Bowles Seattle offense in a year without massive turnover in players. It’s not how the team was built.

Baker was not the plan. Baker was a cheap experienced player who was willing to play for nothing and compete with the heir apparent to the franchise. If trask had shown he was ready to take the mantle, baker won’t be here . Or he might have been there to be a back up.

Let’s face it, trask is a 2nd round pick and bake a 1yr free agent deal for 800.00 and a bag of peanuts. There’s no commitment to bake. There is for trask. Which is why he should be playing. And he should have started the season.

Is he a cure all, no.! Is he an improvement, no. But he’s an investment and either he busts or he doesn’t. But let’s get him out of the way by playing him, and admit this is a rebuilding year! Lots of things to address and lots of other positions to improve.

Other than kickers , that’s the only two positions I think are untouchable.

  123. Since76 Says:

The stupidity of football fans never ceases to amaze.

  128. RichieRich2 Says:

I agree with Joe 100% on this Mayfield has been pretty good. I give him a B Rating for quarterback. He is getting blitzed every play because we DON’T have real running backs. Hell. The couches even gave up the run game in the second half. They KNEW we were going to throw. Our o-line is not the greatest but Mayfield doesn’t quit. He avoids sacks he runs and made some great throws under constant pressure. It will say Josh Allen was great. He us an A+ rated quarterback and our defense at times were helpless to stop any of his passes. But overall we were in this game. If y6take away our stupid penalties that canceled great plays. The outcome could have been different

  129. tbc 1 Says:

I bet any of you trask lovers are season ticket holders that sell all there tickets to the opposing teams great job.

  130. D1 Says:

    Power sweep,

Playing with the starters ? Trask nor Mayfield did!
But there’s practice with the ones and yes trask got a lot of reps with the ones.
Just because you didn’t see it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

The flip side is that trask never played against the ones either!
There’s never an accounting for that fact .

At this point, if trask started next week, it’s not going to be a good position for him to come in and play his best football. He’s far less mobile in the pocket than mayfield . Fix protection and hopefully generate some semblance of a run game then put trask in.

I don’t know why the supposed trask fans are so eager to put him in a bad position to succeed. Either you don’t think about it or believe that mayfield is decidedly less capable and talented than trask. Give the kid a chance to succeed not just throw him into the meat grinder because you hate mayfield.

  131. Bojim Says:

Love Mayfield. One tough SOB. Never gives up. Makes things happen. By himself!!!!

  132. power sweep Says:

    @D1

Before coming to the Bucs, Mayfield had 5 NFL seasons and 72 NFL games playing with starters. To this day, Trask has 0 NFL games playing with starters (not even in preseason games). Do the math, son. I know you can do it!

  133. Mark hardt Says:

Brady last year did not do any better ending the season at 8-9. Baker has had above average decision making. The Goat of course was better. But compared to.Tom last year, Baker is an elite scrambler and has elite arm strength. Did you see that 60 yard spiral Hail Mary the Godwin should have caught? If the o-line stops holding and false starting Baker,s upside is higher than the should have retired to save his marriage Brady.

  134. Matt Says:

Baker fanboys are forgetting one key thing

He’s proven not to be anything but a poor QB1 on FOUR teams.

He’s been below average for us (slightly better than projected to be fair) but there is absolutely 0.00% chance Baker can lead a title to a title. On any decent team Baker will always be one of the worst starters on the team.

Those are facts and proven by years of play.

Trask is most likely worse. But it’s not proven. There is a chance he’s better than Baker.

But what’s the plan for Baker? Give us a mediocre year so we get a crappier draft pick? Yay. Then we get a weaker prospect or get Y2 with a mediocre Baker. All we are doing is making the rebuild take longer.

  135. UKBuccaneer Says:

There are ostensibly 3 reasons why you bench your starting QB:

    1 – injury
2 – the season is mathematically over and you want to see how your backup looks
3 – your backup QB gives you a better chance to win.

Now 1 and 2 aren’t valid at this moment in time, so that leaves us with ‘3’ – and the coaching staff who see Trask operate on a daily basis are far better placed than anyone on JBF to judge him.

If he was good enough, he’d be starting already.

  136. D1 coach Says:

    Power sweep,

Trask got reps with the first team all training camp!
Obviously, that’s not a game. But in practice with the ones, if he was better than baker. Then he’d be starting.

The coaches have seen it, and they must not think it will translate from practice to a game.

And yeah we’ve seen baker play a lot. He has sucked at times and been ok other times. If baker sucks trask must be trash to not beat out such a bad QB that’s on his 15 team in 6mons.

If trask can’t beat bake, yeah let’s roll him out and expect what?

  137. power sweep Says:

    @Tony Marks

What year did you get rejected by the University of Florida?
What year did you start at Tallahassee Community College?
What year did you transfer from TCC to FSU?
What year did you drop out of FSU?
How many FSU jerseys do you have and do you wear them to work?

    Asking for a friend.

  138. RGA Says:

    Heroic’s? Come on now.

  139. Kidfloflo Says:

Baker is the antithesis of J.T.S, kid plays with so much heart and determination, and u can’t put a price tag on his scrambling ability to keep plays alive! Trask would get killed behind this line!

  140. Oneilbuc Says:

D1 . It’s been reported that Kyle Trask was better than Baker remember the first 6 or 7 weeks with practicing with the starters Baker Mayfield 9 picks and Kyle Trask 1 remember? Baker Mayfield was gifted the starting job when they snig him . It’s a reason why he didn’t play much in preseason because Joe and the rest of Bucs media had to sale us Baker Mayfield to help the Glazers sale tickets. For any bucs meadi that’s not holding Baker Mayfield accountable for his bad play has no credibility to me and that’s also to the fans as well.

  141. JD Still Says:

Interesting , the opposing arguments seem to be ; We want to see Trask play so we can know what we have one way or the other and they think that Trask was done dirty by the signing of Mayfield and that it was part of Mayfield’s agreement that he would start and there never was a legitimate competition , the other argument seems to be by the Mayfield sycophants that We don’t want to see because we are afraid Trask might be better than Mayfield, it appears both arguments are fan based , Mayfield’s fan base seems to be from his days at Oklahoma and in Cleveland, Trask fans seem to be more SEC oriented , ( except for the Florida State Fans who are definitely anti-Trask , but then again there were Florida fans who were definitely anti-Winston, and those Winston fans who resent his being replaced by a Florida QB). This argument will never be resolved by posting on this site and it’s tearing the team and the fan base apart , if it was caused by the actions of coaches and management , that is who will have to solve it, hopefully , on the field of play, if it was part of Mayfield’s contract that he would start and Trask never really had a chance , that would be devastating and trust by half the fan base and players would be lost and probably could not be restored .

  142. UKBuccaneer Says:

Fans really don’t get caught up in long term beef over this stuff. We all know that neither trask nor mayfield is the long-term answer at QB and this argument will be forgotten.

It’s just strange that some fans are so adamant that Trask (who is less mobile than mayfield) can overcome the obvious failings of the o-line and running game.

This team’s issues go way beyond the QB position.

  143. Oneilbuc Says:

JD . I see what you saying but I don’t care about any of those colleges . But starting Baker Mayfield was a waste of time we already know what he is. He’s on his 4th team in 6 years that says all you need to know about Baker Mayfield. And I still believe Jamies with a running game would have gotten us far . Remember every year Jamies was here we had a top 5 offense with no running game. But I was called a FSU fan and now because I rather Kyle Trask than Baker Mayfield now I’m called a UF fan. What it sounds like I’m more of a bucs fan because it really doesn’t matter which college a quarterback comes from.

  144. Oneilbuc Says:

Look what Will Levi’s is doing to the falcons and look how Baker Mayfield looked? Lol 😂😂

  145. David Says:

Joe stop making excuses for Baker or sell him as the leader of this team.

  146. David Says:

Still waiting a negative article from Joe on Baker. He hasn’t criticized hime once.

  147. Johnny G Says:

How many dropped passes were there in Thursdays game that should have been caught. It seemed like that had a real negative impact on the Bucs momentum in the game?

  148. Student of the Game Says:

It’s a repeat, but I still say trade Trask for Derek Henry before trade deadline and Bucs get double bonus. Likely improvement in run game and Trask posters are off to give Titan fan sites hell. Win- Win for the Bucs and their fans.
