Work to do, says Bucs QB.
It shouldn’t have been that close.
That’s the vibe Joe got from the Bucs’ locker room after Tampa Bay slapped around Justin Fields and the bungling Bears today.
Despite moving the ball up and down the field, the Bucs found themselves only up 20-17 with just over six minutes left.
Could the Bucs find a way to blow this game against a sad team? Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett saw to that with a pick-six late to seal the win.
Why was the game this close? A couple of very untimely penalties on separate possessions killed two drives and too often the Bucs had to settle for field goals or no points after entering the red zone.
Three times the Bucs got the ball inside the Bears-20 and came away with just two field goals.
After the game, Baker Mayfield said that has to change.
“We have to end up with touchdowns,” Mayfield said. “We’re too damn good not to finish in the end zone. … we’ll get that ironed out”
Bucs stud receiver Mike Evans agreed, though he is confident that will happen.
“We left a lot out there,” Evans said. “We can be better. Hopefully when everybody gets a grasp of the offense and we are able to tweak some things” more points will come.
And that is the cool thing about the Bucs offense. It has room to grow.
Last week while traveling to Minneapolis for the Bucs’ Week 1 game, Joe spoke to the father of a Bucs defender. This man told Joe his son said Bucs coaches told the defense that they will have to carry the team for the first few weeks of the season while the offense rounds into form.
And from what Joe heard, the defenders have taken that challenge from Bucs coaches to heart.
Just watching the first two games, Joe sees how the defense has risen to the challenge.

I think it’s more about Bowles than anything. He’s the one telling the offense to shut it down and run out the clock when you’re up 20-10 with 14 mins left in the 4th quarter. That’s always going to hold back any chance this team has of doing anything, since good teams will come back and get a W there while he’s still sitting on the lead, trying not to lose, as opposed to someone like Arians who puts opponents away.
But they got the win, just not the 38-10 victory they should have had.
In any case the Bucs will win next week as well, will be 3-0, the talk of the NFL!

Let’s just hope BM doesn’t try to force it to ME anymore. I saw that int coming before he let the ball go. ME being out wide with no one on him and DBs on the inside…….it was forced.
Not hating…bake played great…but he got lucky there.

The Bucs defense was great but Justin Fields is a bust. Chicago has to, once again, address the QB position in a year. LOL!

Tampa is playing very hard. The coaches got this team fired up mañg. I cant wait till kancey gets in the mix. This could get real. A big test comes next week at home against Philly. Are we smoke and mirrors, or is this what we were hoping we could be?

I am pleasantly surprised so far. But it’s going to get rough for a while on the schedule so enjoy this one for now. Even going 2-0, we may go 5-10 the rest of the way without playing poorly.

We get it Rod, you don’t like Bowles. But don’t make crap up like ‘Todd Bowles told the offense to shut it down in the 4th qtr’. After the Bucs went up 20-10, they ran 14 plays plus 2 kneeldowns … 7 runs & 7 passes. That 50% run – 50% pass ratio is exactly the same proportion that we ran for the whole game … 34 runs & 34 passes. Bowles didn’t tell Canales to shut down anything.

Defense Rules – the calendar says it’s 2023, not 1973. You win by scoring points, not winning TOP and having exactly the same number of running plays as passing plays. Also a 1 yard dump off to a TE or RB is not the same as taking shots downfield.
The offense scored 20 for the 2nd week in a row, and left a ton of points on the field, and lost all the aggressiveness that was working once they got a lead.
Hey, it worked today, but if you don’t think Arians stays aggressive and puts away the Bears – while Bowles makes it a 3 point game by being conservative, you’re nuts.
Big balls isn’t about going for it on 4th and inches, it’s about playing to win, not to lose.

Defense Rules – again, check the calendar, and yet it’s still 2023. If you think invasions is like Red Dawn and people coming down in parachutes, again, that’s another thing you’re clueless about.

Same old story, the Bucs have to get better in the red zone. Need more misdirection plays and creativity in play calling in the red zone. As it is we get to third and five inside of 10 yards to the end zone and can’t get it in.

Horrible coach period, i am not a professional scout but i can read Todd B. like a book, as can most opposing teams and Bucs fans wirth brains, Reminds me of another coach here who won nothing but fan suuport with 4 Hall of Fame defenders. A certain Coach came in and won the Super Bowl 1st year. Not with previous coaches team, 22 new players ot of 53. All changes made on offense with 5 new starters out of eleven. Played to win with defense the same, different mindset. Bowles should have carried Leftwiches bags and got in the same vehicle out of town.
