Sack Attack

September 17th, 2023

Breakout?

A pass rush is a beautiful thing, yes?

Damn Joe was friggin’ stoked watching the Bucs pass rush get after Bears runaround quarterback Justin Fields like he was giving away winning Powerball tickets.

The Bucs racked up six sacks today. Yes, that’s right. Six! And who led the way? Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. How big of day did JTS have? He had 20 percent of his career sacks today, two.

JTS last year was close to quite a few sacks but didn’t finish. He even had a sitdown with Bucs coach Todd Bowles who explained to him he wasn’t bad and could be good if he would just finish the pass rush and put quarterbacks on their arses.

Today, JTS did that albeit against the QB who took the most sacks last season.

“Just finishing when I’m in the vicinity,” JTS said of his two-sack game. “that’s a great feeling. We were hitting [Fields] all game, just being able to bring him down.

“It was a pretty fun job today.”

Fun as hell.

Joe had repeatedly typed during the offseason that the Bucs had a good defense and if the Bucs somehow found an edge rush the defense could be damn good. Well, is that what we are seeing now?

If this is what will come from Shaq Barrett, YaYa Diaby (he had a half-sack today) and JTS, teams better watch the hell out. This defense will light offenses up with a solid edge rush to go along with ball-hawking and gang-tackling.

This guy takes all day to process what the other team is doing.
I knew it was going to be a feast

I’m in the middle of watching the game because I recorded it while golfing (73 today 👍), I already know they won,
but Jake just booted a punt 72 yards and he’s getting the short end of the stick. Why do they measure from the line of scrimmage? !?!
That left his foot at the 18 yard line and flew 3-4 yards into the end zone.
That was at least 85 yards in the air!!!!!

  3. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Agree David – huge punt! Happy birthday young man!

  4. Boss Says:

New this kid was gonna blow up. He has the tools…just needed some time, training and competition in the form of shaq.

Man shaq is playing above anything I imagined.

I knew the D would be good….but dang. Now let’s see how they do in a shootout……because there have been guys wide open but they have not faced a good enough qb.

  5. Miller5252 Says:

There was one play from YaYa today where he absolutely blew a guy up! Smile on his face the whole time as he wrecked a Bears offensive players life. These young guys continue to grow, get better and stay healthy they could have the best rotation of front 7 out there. Move over Philly. YaYa, keep wrecking folks

  6. Usfbuc Says:

The defense has played well so far. I am hopeful that this is who they are. I am going to wait to get overly excited until after the game against the Eagles.

  7. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 looks stronger than last year.

  8. Ugotrobbed Says:

Great job today! With the Eagles coming in next game, we’ll see where we’re really at, because their o-line is one of the best.
PS: Hell will NOT be fun! (just sayin)

  9. David Says:

The big question for me on defense was the line. Lot of ?’s there- Hall, the rookie, JTS, Shaq after injury, Vea stamina ….
So far through two games, they look really good.
The biggest issue was edge rushers and so far SHAQ, coming off of injury, looks really good and JTS looks like he’s ready to be that first round pick!

    Yes!

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Guess what? Falcons won today, too, so we’re tied 2-0. I’ve been a JTS punter since the draft. He’s fast, and always in the opposing team’s backfield. So, he’s a disrupter, but he’s becoming a terror with VV. Our first round pick gets healthy with his speed……. Those 3 could end up being real scary to the opposing offense. Love it.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

5 different players involved with the 6 sacks…….and, we continue to get our money’s worth out of Cam Gill

  13. Cannon Says:

…and to think, Chancey didn’t even suit up

  14. Oxycondomns Says:

Kudos to licht and bowles for putting together a competitive team

  15. Bucsfan951 Says:

I have to say, this defense is fun to watch. I hope it doesn’t drop off as the season goes along.

    Yaya really has me intrigued.

  16. Larrd Says:

Five OLBs—Barrett, Shoyinka, Nelson, YaYa, and Gill—have reached the QB already. If Kancey can get healthy watch out!

  17. adam from ny Says:

all i can say at this point, 2 games in, is joe sho and logan hall are getting active out there…

and it’s damn good to see…

both lines are looking good after 2 weeks going into the big eagles game

  18. adam from ny Says:

also good to see shaq doing his thing…after all he’s gone though…

and after oj howard never quite came back the same after the torn achilles

  19. Show Me the TDs Says:

I have some thoughts…1. Yes, Rod Muncher is a buffoon. 2. No one should be banned. Just ignore them. They are only sad little people who post the way they do to gain attention. 3. China will never invade the US. They might send some missiles our way and kick off Armageddon, but don’t have the capacity to invade. 4. China will invade Taiwan NLT 2027. The Vietnam vet…I applaud your service. I was in 28 years. If you think Biden is a good president, you are a fool. Say hello to Hanoi Jane for me next time you see her.

  20. David Says:

It’s only 2 games but it’s so good to see JTS playing like he is. He is finishing. It’s also good to see a lot of fans here giving him props because he’s taking a lot of heat (and maybe rightfully so).

Joe mentions this every single year when the draft is rolling around –
but a big takeaway to me is you have got to give DE/edge rushers a couple years. It is so rare to have a rookie come in and get 10 sacks or more.

More often than not that position takes 2-3 years to really show up

    Keep it up JTS!!

  21. firethecannons Says:

Yup JTS had a great day and he was involve in many pressures too. Glad, give him some confidence and he will be able to build on this.

  22. Wild Bill Says:

Sheesh, JTS got a years worth of sacks in one game! Dam if he can get at least one Every Other Game he could be in double digits!!! SHOCKING!

  23. Bucschamp Says:

Fields running straight into Vita Vea was funny
