“Great Mix Of Youth And Talent And Experience”

September 10th, 2023

Buccaneers Super Bowl general manager Jason Licht.

What a freaking day it was for the Buccaneers’ youth movement, which is complemented by a bunch of veteran studs and a quarterback wild card of historic proportions.

Tampa Bay has a rare roster configuration born from strong drafting, a uniquely massive salary cap crunch after the Tom Brady years, a necessary and huge stable of rookies, and from having a former No. 1 overall pick quarterback earning peanuts ($4 million plus incentives).

Joe’s never seen a roster quite like this one. Former Falcons QB Matt Ryan was talking about it on the CBS broadcast when he referenced the Bucs’ “great mix of youth and talent and experience.”

Joe’s not sure how “great” it is. Not yet. But it’s certainly unique and well thought out.

Before kickoff, Super Bowl general manager Jason Licht said the Bucs are the eighth-youngest club in the NFL. Licht wasn’t sure, but he thought he might have the youngest roster of his 10-year tenure. It’s certainly got the most rookies (13), Licht said, and nearly all those rookies were on the field today in the big win against the Vikings.

The Bucs even got a lot younger at kicker, which paid off when newcomer Chase McLaughlin booted the winning 57-yard field goal.

Joe sure hopes the Bucs can thrive this season and win the NFC South.

If this unique mix of players battles its way to 8-9 and misses the playoffs, that would be awfully unsatisfying, and make the Bucs’ future quite complicated.

So far so good! The team, coaches included, came to play. TB and DC called a pretty good game. The players made plays when the game was on the line. The rookies and special teams did well. The players committed few penalties, gang tackled, and worked hard for the win. BM overcame dropped and missed passes early and made big plays, when the team needed them, in a loud road environment. Todd Bowles made some gutsy calls that went his way. What a difference a year make! A great TEAM win! So far so good!

Great Week 1 road game Win !! Contributions from a host of players.

Well Matt Ryan said that, then singled out Thompkins while talking about how well the Bucs had drafted. I found it funny, since he named a UDFA. But I got his point.

Overall I thought the commentary in the game was God awful, and we’re going to have to listen to a year of morons saying White needs to run hard into the back of his offensive lineman on every play like he’s Michael Pittman because Tiki said he’s indecisive (which he isn’t, he’s patience, not the same thing).

I don’t think we are near scratching the surface with our younger players……it seemed to me that we looked much improved on special teams. That’s because we have capable and willing participants.

    I like this team……

I’m glad TB12 came to town and helped us win another SB. But, to be honest, I’m glad the BA and TB era is over. It was a flash in the pan and never meant to be anything more. Brady brought the media spotlight to Tampa and that was good but how fast it all faded. It was a circus. We don’t need a circus. Maybe the Glazers’ have learned that stability ( with the excellent help of Jason Licht ) is what this franchise and town needs most. Stability is in everyone’s best interest including all the players that want to be paid. With stable Bucs, Bolts and Rays we can remain “Champa Bay”.

Licht looking good after this game. Ya Ya, Izean, Kicker Cancy Linemen.

Wow Rod you really work hard for your insults eh?

” I found it funny, since he named a UDFA”

Really? Virtually all commentators I’ve heard or read generally included the entire signing class whether drafted or not. Perhaps you wouldn’t haven’t gotten your panties in a wad if they had more “accurately” stated Licht’s rookie signees?

  8. DS Says:

Logan Hall made a play today

  9. Tucker Says:

White was indecisive too often would like to see tucker get the ball more often.

  10. Wild Bill Says:

The Bucs looked old and slow last year. Today the young bloods made plays. This team may get a lot better as the season progresses. Hope so!

  11. Ugotrobbed Says:

White really has a tough time breaking tackles. Was watching other games and drooling over some of the other RBs that make guys miss and then get 4 or 5 yards after contact.

  12. orlbucfan Says:

Been a Licht fan since his first season here. He deserves GM of the Year honors, but probably won’t get it cos he’s with the Bucs. It will be interesting to see what Bowles is made out of now that he’s out from under the shadow of Brady and Ariens.

  13. unbelievable Says:

I agree that White did not look special at all yesterday.

He needs to channel that Seattle fire and start breaking tackles instead of just falling over when he gets hit.

  14. TampabayDJ Says:

One of the biggest upset wins yesterday ! Noticed how the betting lines on the Bucs went from being underdogs all year , to being favored next week . They also took the rest of the lines off . Everyone goes off last year. This is not last year , this team and every other team is different than last year. Look at the Bengals getting pounded by the Browns. The Giants looked like a high-school team against the Cowgirls. I really believe our Bucs will win this division. The Panthers and Falcons are terrible. The AINTS played a bad football team and barely won. Go Bucs

Hey dummy, did you actually listen to the segment being referenced. The reason it stood out is because Ryan specifically said ‘drafted’ – he didn’t say undrafted or even rookies. Also all I said was I found it funny, as in amusing, I didn’t even bash him for it.
