Great Late-Afternoon Injury Update

September 11th, 2023

Rookie defensive tackle and first-round pick Calijah Kancey.

The Bucs had a thrilling opening-day win against the Vikings yesterday, and it seems they didn’t lose any players in the process.

Rookie first-round pick defensive tackle Calijah Kancey left the game with a calf issue after just 11 snaps. He had injured his calf five weeks ago but had a stunning week of practice upon his return last week, per Bucs general manager Jason Licht on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

After beating the Vikings on Sunday, head coach Todd Bowles had no update on Kancey’s injury, and he didn’t share one at his Monday news conference. But later Monday afternoon, Bowles shared good injury news overall about his team.

“I think we came out ok, a few nicks, nothing serious,” Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “And we’ll see how they feel later in the week, but I thought we came out pretty good.”

Joe loved hearing “nothing serious.” That includes Kancey, who looked electric in his limited debut.

The Bucs balled out yesterday. Especially the defense. I had them totally wrong. My bad. I didn’t see that total effort coming. Keep it going! Great job and a better win on the road as significant underdawgs.

  2. SlyPirate Says:

I heard CK’s calf got tight (cramp) so the training staff pulled the plug instead of risking injury. Kudos to the trainers. You know CK and the coaches would likely have made other plans.

    Play the long game

  3. firethecannons Says:

Yes I agree, Kancey look dynamic. look forward to seeing him later in the year when he is well. Remember Vita Vea and his injury early in his rook season.

  4. Obvious Says:

I wasn’t able to watch the game. I know it was limited but just how good did Kancey look in the limited snaps?

  5. NJbucs23 Says:

Obvious- he looked very fast. That one stunt play, he blew up cousins untouched.

  6. Crickett Baker Says:

The Bucs radio, 98rock broadcasts the game and I get it in AR, so maybe you can try that, Obvious. It is great to hear Gene’s play-by-play.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

The dude looked like greased lightning in his limited play.

    Bodes well for the future.

  8. Tucker Says:

It’s way early but kancey looks like he could be special crazy explosion.

  9. Vlad The Impaler Says:

After one game, it’s starting to look like Leftwich may have been even more at fault for the poor 2022 season than we were led to believe.

  10. adam from ny Says:

there was a dude out there moving at a bit of a different pace than the rest…

and his name is kancey……….jah kancey

  11. adam from ny Says:

    the d-line looked good yesterday…

i know there are many proper football terms to use when describing things…

but i would say the line was causing a ton of “congestion”…

there wasn’t much room to breath a lot of the time for cousins and the rb’s…

they didn’t rack up sacks, but caused mucho congestion…..and here’s another odd word…they were very “swarmy”…

now let’s use it in a sentence:

a swarmy and congestive group of hangry football players took u.s. bank stadium by storm on opening day of the nfl season

  12. go dawgs Says:

I owe the bucs defense a huge apology! they balled out against a great offense..

  13. MadMax Says:

We got this Bears game….let him heal. I hate seeing a rook with an injury rushed back….let him rest and be ready to upset the Iggles!

  14. Heath Hunt Says:

242 yards of total offense and 3.6 yards per play. That is worse than last year.

  15. Cardiac kidz Says:

Sounds a lot like the rookie season of Vea all over again. He’s going to have a great 2024 season!

  16. SB~LV Says:

If he is active on Sunday give him his reps in the second half

  17. ATLBuc Says:

Vea is a stud. He ran down a running back on the sideline!!

  18. RGA Says:

I’m not sure Kancey looked electric. He had one good play where he nearly reached the QB and that was on a stunt that fooled the offensive line. During straight up pass rush opportunities which were few, he was handled by the offensive line.

  19. Irishmist Says:

Meanwhile, Rogers goes out on his first series. The Jets tried to buy a goat, instead they got a lamb.

  20. Pewter Power Says:

That’s good news I hope he plays this week he needs some playing time for the games we have coming up the next few weeks

  21. Bobby Says:

What are you guys talking about the Bucs defense balled out and did so well on defense?! The Vikings passing game ate us up all game. Thankfully for turnovers, because that game would have been over early in the first half in favor of the Vikings. Thankfully it’s not serious with Kancey, but they should still keep him out until he absolutely ready. We need Calijah to abuse QBs all season.

  22. Eckwood Says:

I would say the defense had moments , the zone got abused at times and the d ends were not that productive . Licht had better find another T end and the worst RB performance in a decade took place on Sun ……. R White looked like he was in ultra slow motion with 0 acceleration. One more game for him and if that happens again , he goes to RB # 4 . Chase Edmonds looked to be quicker and sharper as did the Orange Man !! Someone please tell Baker that Kief isn’t going to catch gas missles and the idea is to complete the pass not throwing rockets . Overall decent game by Baker but trying to lazer everything and not getting lanes will cost him 5 completions a game ….. Exact same problems he had in Cleveland. O Line was decent for first game together ….. Punter is a Stud and Kicker looked great and special teams looked best in years

  23. Duane in Sanford Says:

Its ok to let him get healthy. 16 more games is still more than he normally plays, so sit him down and let him work on his film habits this week. Having him right for at least the Aints would be nice.

  24. Irishmist Says:

Whitehead with 2 picks already. Wish we could have kept him.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Whitehead is great, but both of those INT’s were basically punts, on 3rd down, would have punted in both cases if it was incomplete.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

They were at the 40, outdoors, not kicking a 57 yard FG in that situation.

Never know why people ever care about those INTs in that situation. Winston did the same stuff and people always pretended like it changed the game when on 3rd and 22 he threw an INT 53 yards down the field.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Wait, this is great news… Lets call the Bills after the game, and point out that Mayfield didn’t turn the ball over, is a former #1 overall pick, and we’ll trade them straight up Josh Allen who just turned the ball over twice.

Except Bowles would probably veto the deal since, as he said, the most important QB trait is not turning it over.

  28. Tbbucs3 Says:

Whitehead now 3 picks, nice going Licht!

  29. Rod Munch Says:

All the Whitehead INTs were good – but that one was a legit big deal. Could be like Ronde single handedly winning that game vs the Eagles in 2006 if the Jets can actually get a TD.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

I have no issues with keeping Davis, but at the time I said I’d rather keep Whitehead and Cappa, which would have been about the same money. I stand by that. Man, Whitehead and Winfield together for a decade would have been huge. Still, you need corners, and not having Davis would have been huge — except for Lovie playing so much zone, and when you do that, you don’t need great corners (at least not the loose sloppy zone Bowles runs).

  31. unbelievable Says:

Whitehead with his 3rd INT tonight!!!

It’s too bad we could t hang on to him. Licht has drafted a lot of talent over the years.

  32. Fred McNeil Says:

Off topic, but Jordan Whitehead has han three INTs for the Jets so far tonight

  33. DoooshLaRue Says:

Nothing against Whitehead, he was good with us, but even Adrian Claiborne had a 6 sack for the Falcons after we let him go.

  34. JDubb Says:

Whitehead had hands of stone when he played for us, had great physicality but couldn’t catch a cold and now all of a sudden Allen is going to send him to the pro bowl in one week.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

DoooshLaRue – Whitehead was fantastic when he was here, are you really calling him a one hit wonder? Must have been that I compared him to Ronde, and I know how much you hate Ronde for tanking Chris Meyer’s career, as you think he’s the best announcer in the game.

  36. BucsFan81 Says:

I didn’t want whitehead to go. I remember thinking we need to keep him. I remember him lighting up a packers player in the NFC championship game.

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

Breece Hall is what a good NFL running back is supposed to look like.

Rasheed White doesn’t run anything like that.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

God, I hope the Jets lose. I love watching home fans of other teams get their hopes built up, only to see them get crushed in the end.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Whitehead with a Ronde like performance, got the team the W.

    Fun game to watch.

  40. Obvious Says:

Thanks for the info guys. Sure wish I could have seen him in live action. I’ll watch the highlights and hope they show more than a couple of clips of him playing. I’ve got a Really Good feeling about him once he gets straightened out.

    GO BUCS!

  41. Woodenman Says:

Get over Whitehead he’s gone . Big hitter not a intercepter .

  42. BillyBucco Says:

So I’ll give JTS one more game to prove me wrong and then I’m calling for Anthony Nelson to start.
He was even injured and clearly our best pass rusher Sunday.

  43. SB Says:

I wonder if Joe will do a Whitehead article tomorrow

  44. Tony Says:

Kancey would’ve been one of the first players I definitely would’ve considered drafting this year so I was kind of glad they took him.

  45. ncbucsfan Says:

Canales and Bowles both eluded to Brian Flores defensive geared towards stopping the run, so all the negative rhetoric about the run game in Week 1 is both premature and without appropriate context. Y’all act like we’re supposed to just go running up and down the field in Minnesota, a playoff team, the first game of the year. Tell me, qho wouldn’t play run first against a team with a new and unproven coordinator, a QB thats been inconsistent and a re-shuffled Oline? Give it a few weeks, sheesh

  46. D-dub bucs fan srq Says:

Hey hunt, that was only one half of football they’ll get it right next time

  47. BAKERSBucs Says:

242 & 3.6 worse than last year what a dumb remark, wasn’t last year with the so called goat that guy was lucky in his career because he is a Convicted cheat that played with a convicted cheat for 20 years.now that’s impressive mayfield ain’t a cheat so we r better off than even the haters know.i read this am that baker was talkin trash to vikes defender with stiff arm read his trash talk funnnny
    Stuff
