Former Bucs WR Mike Williams Dies

September 5th, 2023

Dead at 36.

[UPDATE: 12:10 a.m.] This is damn sad.

Remember Mike Williams? A former fourth-round pick wide receiver of the Bucs out of Syracuse in 2010? Well, Williams apparently died Tuesday working construction in Buffalo.

Jon Scott, a Bills reporter for Spectrum News in Buffalo, reported that Williams was apparently mortally wounded while working at a construction site today. He later succumbed to his injuries.

No further information is available.

Williams looked like a draft steal after he racked up 964 yards and 11 touchdowns his rookie season. The Bucs named him No. 1 receiver early that summer. Williams followed that up with an OK season in 2011 before racking up 996 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2012.

His career seemed to nosedive shortly after signing a six-year deal worth some $40 million in 2013.

Williams’ lifestyle was partly the subject of an expose. He allegedly had a mattress in his Tampa front yard and also allegedly possessed a stripper pole in his living room. The nerve!

Additionally, Williams was the victim of a hassle at his home where he was knifed by his brother in the leg. Allegedly.

Williams quickly began to lose focus on football and wanted to jump-start a rap career, which didn’t take off. The Bucs traded him to the Bills in 2014.

Williams was a backup in Buffalo and was waived by the Bills before the end of the 2014 season. He sat out 2015 with a suspension and had a brief cup of coffee with the Chiefs in the summer of 2016 before being released in late August.

That ended his NFL career.

Joe is sad to hear of Williams’ demise. He was always good to Joe.

[UPDATE: 12:10 a.m.] On a GoFundMe.com page, Wendell Muhammad, Williams’ father, wrote Williams was struck in the head with a fallen steel beam. The incident initially rendered Williams paralyzed in his right arm and below the waist with swelling on his brain.

Muhammad also mentioned on the GoFundMe.com page that Williams was hospitalized in Tampa.

That’s crazy I remember when this guy was on the team. He made all that money and had to work construction. Sounds like his life took a turn for the worse after football.

  4. Pewter Power Says:

This is truly sad because as a 4th round pick he has 40 million reasons to focus on football.

Damn he was one of my favorite players… shame he let the party lifestyle take him down. I’m sure more news will come out… I’m a construction worker, I definitely know that any day could be my last. Be safe out there guys!!

  13. SteelStudBuc Says:

Steel beam fell on his head… be careful out there guys!! Could happen to anyone

  14. Oneilbuc Says:

Why is it that every time when a football player die it’s CTE ?? God has a date for all of us regardless if you play football or not. Or less Jesus Christ comes back we are all going to die. The only thing that matters is are you at peace with God through Jesus Christ. That’s the only question that really matters!!

  15. Architek Says:

    Rip

  16. adam from ny Says:

if he was working construction in buffalo wouldn’t he be hospitalized somewhere in new york rather than oddly enough, tampa ???

    Uh, huh.

  19. Delusional Intelligence Says:

    Damn sad on many fronts.

According to Spotrac he earned 11.8 Million over his career. And was working construction. Suddenly, my life doesn’t seem so bad.

  20. Mike C Says:

Oneilbuc, This ain’t church. Save your Santa Claus BS

  21. Mickman Says:

Gerald, looks like the cause of his death has nothing to do with the sport he played as you seem to be implying. Someone dying on a constructions site is more common than you think for us common folk.

  22. Joe in Michigan Says:

    RIP, Mike Williams.

  23. nick houllis Says:

I remember Mike tipping that ball to himself in the end zone to score TD, and we saw that from Flowers this Preseason. RIP mike, Vjax, Teo, and Geno now

Why do you always have something snarky to say whenever someone mentions God?

  25. SufferingSince76 Says:

Mike C, Oneilbuc has the right to preach the gospel just as much as you have the right to not read it.

  26. Fred McNeil Says:

Honestly I hate to admit it, but I don’t remember him.

  27. BucU Says:

Rest in peace Mike. Really sad to hear that news.

  28. Fred McNeil Says:

Honestly I hate to admit it, but I don’t remember him for some reason. Might be because there’s lots of receivers with that name.

  29. rrsrq Says:

Wow, what a joy to watch and person to route for. RIP brother, condolences and prayers to the family and friends left behind. I get what you are saying GMC, post football, you are still a family (fraternity), when a brother dies, it makes you look introspectively

  30. Mike C Says:

“Jesus Christ comes back we are all going to die. The only thing that matters is are you at peace with God through Jesus Christ. That’s the only question that really matters!!” Alright flat earth Crack pipe, This ^, is not mentioning God, this is trying to get people to join your human sacrifice cult. And if he is catholic, I worry about the kids…

  31. Frank Pillow Says:

Like so many players of his era, Mike was very talented…but there was no veteran leadership on those teams to focus anyone on football. It’s very sad that Mike became a cautionary tale instead of a bonafide star. Even sadder how his life ended and at such an early age. RIP

  32. Durango 95 Says:

Y’all be thinking we’re superheroes and we be tryna tell y’all we are humans just like everybody else.
    ——————-

Can’t even give a salute to a former teammate without taking a swipe at the fans.

  33. MikeDF Says:

    “Nobody seen 40”

And in the inner cities many don’t see 30 or even 20 and nobody cares.

    1. He said, UNLESS Christ comes back, we are all going to die, which is true. Are you not going to die?

    2. Jesus called for an end to all blood sacrifice.

    3. Any institution made by men can be corrupted by evil, which is why Jesus said that “God does not reside in the temple.” And, “Let no man come between you and the Father.” Blaming people for something that some of their leaders have done is akin to condemning children for the sins of their fathers.

So I ask again, why do you expend so much energy trying to mock and ridicule someone over a few words that brings him comfort?

  35. MikeDF Says:

Mike C Says: “And if he is catholic, I worry about the kids.”

You need to look at Professor Charol Shakeshaft’s studes showing public school teachers and Protestant clergy both having higher rates of child sex abuse than Catholic priests.

  36. Jimmy Says:

    Y’all be thinking we’re superheroes

This coming from a guy that thinks he’s Batman.

  37. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    RIP Mike Williams.

That being said…… McCrybaby literally calls himself Batman. A former teammate dies and he somehow makes it about himself and whines about being thought of as a Superhero. But man, his get off was so quick. Y’all media types can’t understand why most Bucs fans don’t like Gerald, this is a prime example. I don’t hear athletes that participate in individual sports talk about themselves as much as McCrybaby does.

  38. D-Rome Says:

if he was working construction in buffalo wouldn’t he be hospitalized somewhere in new york rather than oddly enough, tampa ???

The tweet and news report didn’t actually say he was injured in Buffalo. They only called him a Buffalo native.

  43. Mike C Says:

Worship your magic pie guy in the sky in your own home or with others who share your delusions, not on a Football Web site. If someone was on this site praising the Devil or Allah a doubt you would be so offended at someone calling them out.

  44. Old Sombrero Says:

You’re insulting Batman. McCoy was the Invisible Man.

  45. Tbbucs3 Says:

RIP Mike Williams, was an honor to watch you play.

All the losers saying “wasted talent”, the man played 5 years in the national football league and had solid years, something 99% of football players don’t get to say. Too many of you are brainwashed with first take style television where you either have to be Brady or your a bust.

I might make a comment, but I wouldn’t have the unhinged display of anger that you seem to have for God. It’s like someone sprinkled holy water on your head. LOL

  47. Mike C Says:

    Yep……magic water, good come back.

  48. Bucsministerfuller Says:

Williams was the victim of a hassle at his home where he was knifed by his brother in the leg. Allegedly.
Hassle at his home? Who writes like this?

  49. Mike C Says:

And yeah, it upsets me that children and adults fall victim to these cults.(40,000 different types of Christianity btw, so yeah each one is its own little cult). Not a fan of any other of the extremists religions either if that makes you feel better.

  50. EternalSon Says:

    Rip Mike.

Enjoyed seeing your greatness. Thank you for sharing your light.

Condolences to his family and friends.

  51. unbelievable Says:

Just sad. RIP Mike, gone too soon.

That tweet from McCoy is so sad as well, thinking about all those guys dead before the age of 40. Too young.

Meanwhile some of y’all fans are straight up pathetic and embarrassing.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

    That’s awful.

  53. D-Rome Says:

Speaking of McCoy’s tweet I didn’t know that Daniel Teo’Neshim and Geno Hayes passed away.

  54. Jerid421 Says:

Because “God” is a theory. And religion is a cult-based, mass delusion that needs to be cured. And just because you and the other brainwashed masses of credulous sheeple out there subscribe to this theory, doesn’t mean the rest of us want to hear about it. Especially on a sports-themed thread. If you want to spout poetic about your personal religious beliefs, go find a Reddit channel for like-minded individuals and chat away. This is why people get upset.

As for Mike Williams. This is tragic. But really makes you wonder how in the hell someone squanders 12 million dollars and has to work a blue collar job. Just sayin’.

And McCoy is accusing us fans of thinking they’re not humans and that they’re superheros. But I think it’s the other way around. These athletes need to come back down to earth and realize that some day, all the money and fame could disappear and they may have to work a regular job (like us fans) and get a taste of some real danger (like an I-beam up side the head). And god ain’t “tryna” get involved in that.

  55. Mike C Says:

    👏👏👏👏👏

  56. Jimmy Says:

    >>> And just because you and the other brainwashed masses of credulous sheeple out there subscribe to this theory, doesn’t mean the rest of us want to hear about it. <<<

What makes you think we want to hear your nonsense?

  57. Erick Says:

So apparently his mom just came out and said that report from Buffalo is false. He is on life support in Tampa. So still doesn’t look good

  58. Yucs2BucsBack2 Yucs Says:

Quit knocking the guy !!! He was a son, father and sadly passed away tragically and we all need to send prayers to his family. RIP Mike

  59. unbelievable Says:

So according to that gofundme and some people on twitter, he’s not dead, but remains on life support… Probably not looking good, but I guess there’s still a chance he survives.

  60. Family Says:

Some of you guys are so insensitive..
