“Basic West Coast Bullsh*t” Versus No Faith

September 29th, 2023

Not a great challenge coming for the Bucs defense, says a noted Xs and Os guru.

So what’s the key to the Bucs-Saints game on Sunday, the one Ira Kaufman will enjoy with Bucs fans at the Big Storm Brewing Co. taproom in Centro Ybor?

Joe liked some of the take from NBC Sports Xs and Os guru Chris Simms, the former Bucs quarterback and Belicheats assistant coach.

Simms was on PFT Live with co-host Mike Florio assessing the matchup. He sees a battle of sad offenses.

“This Saints offense, it should be better than what it looks like so far,” Simms said. “It should be. There’s too much money and good players on the O-line; there’s too many weapons at receiver and all that. And now you got [Alvin] Kamara back. It should not be being outgained by 100 yards to Green Bay and all those issues.

“And it’s a little bit of what you hear me say about the Bengals; it’s just basic West Coast bullsh*t offense. (Simms then changed his voice and flailed his arms.) It’s like, ‘You run two slants and you run a slant in the flat, and they’ll be all tricked. They won’t know what to do. Double-slant and slant-flat. Oh sh*t.’

“I mean, it’s annoying. It’s too basic that way. But, I still think they’re better than the Bucs and I don’t have any faith in the Bucs offense. That’s really the problem there. I’m going to take the Saints to win a close won 20-17.”

Joe has some faith in the Bucs offense. Not a ton, but they should be able to score 21 points. The talent is there and the Saints defense, while incredibly consistent, is not terribly scary.

Joe found it funny how Simms was blasting the Saints offense. It was Chucky, Jon Gruden, who was their offensive consultant this summer and the offense is similar to the one Simms played in under Gruden years ago with the Bucs.

While Simms and Chucky clashed 17 and 18 years ago, Joe knows Chucky asked Simms for help cutting the playbook down when Chucky joined the Raiders — to make it simpler for the modern player.

I hope JW torches the Bucs. I know, I know, now you’ll line up to say I’m not a real fan. Whatever. Football is entertainment and I’ll enjoy it how I please. Been a Bucs fan since 86, I went to FSU where he won us a championship.
Can’t argue with getting Brady, but I liked and believed in Winston despite his interceptions. Also part my family lives in New Orleans and I lived there for a year and a half. I’ve been to NOLA countless times in my life and I consider the whole panhandle and gulf coast as part of my home.

I always prefer the Bucs to the Saints with one exception…

I don’t like Bowles and I think we will eventually suck anyway so it would amuse me to see JW drop 50 on us.

Cry about it and say I’m not a real fan, I couldn’t care less

If the Bucs win I’ll be happy, if JW makes you check yo sheet I’ll be thrilled.

  4. Marine Buc Says:

I agree with Sims – The Bucs offense is suspect and can’t run the ball… Our best WR drops at least 2-3 passes per game and half of our starters on defense are on the injury report including 3 CBs.

Kamara is returning for the Saints while Vea, Kancey and D. White are all injured…

I hope the Bucs can keep it close but my expectations are very low.

  5. gp Says:

I’m sorry, but I have no faith that our HC will study the film, find their weaknesses, and exploit them. Study the film to find their strengths and avoid them or overload them.
Nope, what I expect to see is the exact same game plan that we’ve been using since the beginning of the season. Establish the run by running behind our weakest link, right up the gut, between the tackles, over and over and over. Our stud wide receivers will combine for 30% of the targets while our iffy TE and running backs will get the other 70% of targets.

THEE MOST PREDICTABLE in the NFL

I really really want to be proven wrong, but that’s the way I’ve been seeing it since this time last year. And it’s ALL on coaching.

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

Cleanhouse: Have you thought about posting on a Saints site? No Bucs fan wants to hear that you want the Saints to score 50 on our Bucs. 💩

  7. Steven007 Says:

I doubt anyone will say you’re not a real fan, you basically said it yourself. You’ll be happy if we win but thrilled if the saints win? I think thrilled trump’s happy. Which means you’re basically a saints fan. Which is fine, just own it. We don’t need paragraphs of rhetoric to explain it. You’re being a fan of one man trumps your fandom of this team. Get it. Don’t understand it, but get it. I love Jordan Whitehead. If we play the Jets, I hope we will annihilate them. End of story as a Bucs fan. Kind of how I see things like this.

  8. Steven007 Says:

Joe in Michigan said it more succinctly than I did.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

    CH,

    It’s not that you’re not a real Bucs fan…….. it’s that you’re an idiot.

  10. Steven007 Says:

    * seems like a confusing comment, but my previous comment is being moderated

  11. Jack Clark Says:

I have no faith in our run blocking. When we fix our run blocking our offense will be complete.

  12. Sly Pirate Says:

    HELLO, FAIR WEATHER FANS

Same group of commenters were over-the-moon about the Bucs after the first two games. One loss and now they’re the worst. Go take your bipolar meds and let me introduce you to a little thing called “reality”.

The Bucs beat Minnesota and Chicago because they are less than average. They lost to Philadelphia because they are one of the best teams in the league. The Saints are much closer to the Vikings and Chicago than Philly.

The Saints have only scored 20 points once this season … against the worst team in the league. They barely beat two really bad teams and got beat by a very average Packers team. Now they have Winston starting at QB.

The Bucs win this one and all you little wishy washy fair weather fans (that bitched non-stop about TB12 band wagoners but throw your team under the bus) will be in love with the Bucs again come Monday.

  13. Bucs 95 Says:

Why jamies looks sus in this pic 🤣

  14. Duane in Sanford Says:

This was the game I had circled early on the schedule. Just win the game. I dont care if its ugly or a blowout. Need to have success against the Saints.

  15. Don’t really care Says:

Need a write up on why our Pittsburgh drafts can’t get their butts on the field. Not a great start to their careers. Toughen up, figure it out. And there is not much info on their production throughout these injuries. Buccs hiding the true extent of the injury for Calijah, like they did with Jensens injury.

  16. Lokog Says:

Bucs have no heart, always hurt.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

This could be an ugly game between two decent D’s, and two questionable O’s.

May the less incompetent team win…

  18. Rod Munch Says:

From watching Jameis in New Orleans, he’s absolutely not the same player, in particular with all the injuries he’s had. I’ve heard people in fantasy football talking about Winston, like he’s still in a Air Cornell offense like he was with the Bucs, and that’s just not the case, it’s a basic west coast offense like Simms was saying. Also Winston is very tentative now, you can tell all the coaching since he left here has been about not screwing up, instead of making plays. Also, with all the injuries, I really do wonder if Jameis can even sling the ball the way he used to – since he’s been in New Orleans I really can’t think of any times that I’ve seen him playing free, instead he always seems to be a tick slow on everything, again thinking if he makes on mistake he’s gonna get benched.

All of that is good news for the Bucs, assuming the offense can do anything. I can’t really see this being a high scoring game, well, unless half the Bucs defense is out injured. In that case the Saints will just run the ball over and over again and the Bucs offense won’t even get on the field.

  19. D-Rome Says:

Can’t argue with getting Brady, but I liked and believed in Winston despite his interceptions.

He’s had every opportunity to prove to the football world he wasn’t a bust. He couldn’t do it. Let him go. You owe him nothing.

  20. CHRISTOS Says:

The problem is not the Saints Offense, its their Defense.

  21. Duaneu Says:

    Steven07 – liked your response.

I really liked watching Bret Favre play, he was just fun to watch, especially when Warren Sapp was hunting down in the backfield during the old NFC Central days. But I could then or now imagine rooting for the Packers over the Bucs because of Favre. OF COURSE real fans rooted for the Bucs.

Cleanhouse is not a Bucs fan. I have an extremely low opinion of those who are fans of one team trolling the fan websites of another team. Only d*cks do that.

It’s a divisional rivalry game. Both teams will be motivated to whupazz. Unpredictable.

  24. CleanHouse Says:

Doosh Larue- your name says it all

  25. Joe Says:

Need a write up on why our Pittsburgh drafts can’t get their butts on the field

What’s there to “write up?” One guy has a calf injury and can’t get on the field. The other hasn’t recovered (yet) from a hamstring he blew in August.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

Lets take it from the top instead of the revisionist history the Never-Winstoners push.

Winston set every passing and scoring record with the Bucs while he was here and the team had more top 5 offenses under Winston than the rest of the team history combined.

Meanwhile, Winston had the NFL’s worst defense from 2015-2019, and the NFL’s worst kicking game from 2015-2019, AND played the NFL’s hardest schedule during that period.

People who push the fake narrative that he was a bust with the Bucs are literally retarded.

The team signed Brady because he became available. I’m a huge supporter of Winston, but I said at the time, if you can get Brady, it changes the entire franchise, you don’t skip on that, no matter how much I liked Jamies.

However, that doesn’t make Winston a bust.

  27. Don’t really care Says:

And that’s why your articles suck like usual Joe!

  28. #99 the big fella Says:

We have some of the worst fans in the NFL. Even when you lose guys, you are supposed to support your team you were a bunch of sissies.

  29. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rod Munch, a fan of stats! 🙄

  30. D-Rome Says:

    Rod,

If Jay-Miss was so good then why weren’t 29 other teams lining up to sign him when the Bucs didn’t give him a new contract? Why is it he was still sitting on the couch in 2020 when free agency opened up? No team signed him for months in that off season. Why hasn’t any team traded for Jay-Miss? The Jets would rather try and win with Zack Wilson than WinsTOn.

By the way, in case you forgot, Tom Brady demolished every single stat Jay-Miss had.

If a #1 overall draft pick doesn’t get a second contract with the team that drafted him then they are a BUST. Same goes for Baker Mayfield. He was a bust for the Browns and this is his last chance with the Bucs.

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

James absolutely wasn’t a bust for Tampa….like it or not (lots won’t) he lead an explosive offense in the 5 years he was down here

James was and probably still is a good QB with a turnover problem, that’s why the Bucs moved on but to call him a bust is utter nonsense……seems like lots of you don’t understand that there’s TONs of QBs who can simply not turnover the ball over but will only throw for 100 yards and 1 TD and suck.

  32. Lakeland Steve Says:

Does everyone remember the first year with Brady, you know the year we win the Super Bowl. Well that team was completely written off by mid year and look what happened. It took awhile for the offense to gel. So my point is, win, lose or draw don’t go jumping off a bridge if the offense isn’t that great yet. If they don’t start clicking by mid season then you have a reason to panic. Just give them a chance.

  33. geno711 Says:

    Rod,

    Tom Brady:

“Every possession that ends with a kick is a good one.”

    Jameis Winston:

“Every possession that ends with someone catching my pass whether offensive or defensive player is a good one. I will be the leader in Buccaneer stats.”

  34. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Some Buc fans are real special they love misery and they know more then most gms and probably kick there dogs in the morning

  35. Michael Says:

Everybody talking about Jameis Winston. He isn’t gonna start. I’ve got good inside info and Carr injury is not as bad as everyone thinks. Carr will play. You heard it here first .

    ^^^^^^

You sound more like a loyal FSU fan than a Bucs fan 😂

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

I just don’t like our record against backup QB’s?

  38. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Good point Mike. We have a fierce tendency to make back up quarter backs look like the second coming of Tom Brady. Always been that way. This one could get fugly. At the aints, and that lattimore evans thing too. If we get into that deep 2 , lawnchair zone, look out sally….

  39. WyomingJoe Says:

D-ROME: You greatly underestimate Baker Mayfield. Take a look at his stats when he wasn’t injured. Throw out the 2021 season because no other QB in the league would have the guts to play through the pain that he endured from the middle of the second game on. Then he goes to Carolina ( terrible team). Then onto the Rams where he played well. I’m getting tired of defending Baker against ignorant buc “fans.” He’ll prove himself this season. Stay tuned!

  40. Joe in Michigan Says:

Was Jameis the backup when he threw 3 interceptions vs. Tampa Bay last year, in a 20-10 Bucs win? Or was he benched for Andy Dalton after that? Either way, he played like a backup. Hope to see more of the same.

  41. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Funny that its called the West Coast offense when it was developed by Paul Brown and Sam Wyche when they were together at Cinci, did it to hide deficiencies of a smart QB with a weak arm. (Think it was Virgil Carter). Just a bit of trivia

  42. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Wyoming Joe you have the nerve to call fans who support Trask foul names like a school child but show yourself to be the cup piece of Bakers jock strap, always gently cupping and supporting him whispering sweet nothings in everybody’s ears about him. The only thing Baker has done better than Winston is he won in the playoffs, everything else his career is taking the same path. If it wasn’t for all his interceptions Winston would out right be a better qb than Mayfield. Mayfield suffers from a short man’s syndrome he exaggerates his bravado because of that. You’re not even a Bucs fan and got the nerve to bust on Bucs fans who support a player drafted by this team.

So basically what @Cleanuouse is saying is he cheers for whoever is winning that. Spoken like a real loser I mean FSU homer🤣🤣 Bud fan since 86? Yea ok nobody believes bud but nice try. Hey Joe why do we let these fake Fans n here?!?! We need a fake fan purging of this website

  46. Infomeplease Says:

Michael, I agree about Carr starting, he was practicing, though in a limited capacity, on the final injury report!!! The Saints will start Carr over an injuried interception prone JW!
