Baker Mayfield: Noise Control Goes Both Ways

September 21st, 2023

Baker Mayfield

Interesting dynamic at One Buc Palace, per Baker Mayfield’s description this afternoon.

The darling of Bucs fans noted how before opening day, the Bucs collectively focused on blocking out the chorus of outside media noise that labeled them an inevitable sh*tshow destined for a healthy shot at a top-3 draft pick.

Players said they were tuning it out but some like Carlton Davis said the bashing was fueling them to tear up the NFL this season.

Today, Mayfield noted that the Bucs have sort of flipped the script. A month ago it was blocking out haters; now, Mayfield said, players have to stop listening to everyone praising them as a 2-0 surprise contender. Staying steady is critical, he said.

Joe found that intriguing. But Joe knows most players do pay attention to what’s being said. It’s difficult to disconnect and most don’t think they’re affected.

Joe just hopes the Bucs are prepared mentally to be written off as a joke nationally if they get thumped by the Eagles. No, Joe is not saying the Bucs are about to be hammered at home on Monday night, only pointing out that many critics won’t hesitate to hang the Bucs for losing unless it’s a tight game.

That’s the NFL fan and media roller coaster. It’s always best when teams stay off the ride, or at least make sure their seat belt is securely fastened.

    Just win, baby.

  2. Anderson5599 Says:

Bucs have enough veterans and experience guys. Mayfield we are not the browns. David, evans, and wirfs Will make sure we stay focus.

  3. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

As long as the Bucs bring it Monday night. Give it their best, represent well, then everything is gonna be alright!

  4. BucU Says:

I’m with lawn chair dude. My sentiments exactly for the game Monday night.

  5. stpetebucfan Says:

“That’s the NFL fan and media roller coaster.”

Amen Joe! I hope we can learn to manage our emotions and expectations through the very long season ahead.

Bring Back the lawn chairs is off to a great start! I agree. Just continue to play with the heart, passion, and obvious FUN of the first two games and I can live with whatever the scoreboard says.

For heaven’s sake we’re not even half way to the bye which is not even a 1/4 of the way through the season. It’s all good right now let’s enjoy it.

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

I think we will win Monday night. I just hope it doesn’t cause a lack of energy for the Saints game. There is a real shot based on what has been displayed thus far by the BUCS, Eagles and Saints for us to have a 4-0 start. Imagine that.

  7. Larry Says:

CONTENDER or PRENTERDER??? We will know after Monday night!

  8. Rod Munch Says:

They need to win on Monday night, otherwise the comparisons are going to be running wild to 2018, when a journeyman QB started out the year hot for the Bucs, then lost game 3 on Monday night to a team from Pennsylvania, before finishing the season with 5 wins.

The nutjobs in the comments at that time worried about how the Bucs would find money to sign Fitz to a huge deal… I still remember it clearly, and laugh.

But, while Mayfield has played great, it’s not obviously unstainable like it was with Fitz who was putting up numbers that break every NFL passing record if prorated over a full season. What Baker is doing isn’t anything like that – which is a good thing. However, the bad thing is Baker’s history, which tells us he’s going to turn into a pumpkin at any moment – most likely when he first faces a blitz heavy team that can get pressure on him. But, we shall see, maybe he has turned it around, it does happen once in a while.

Also the Bucs have the biggest benefit of all – and that is me picking them to win this game since the day the schedule came out. Some games the Bucs just win, like Chicago in Tampa, and some games, the Bucs always lose, like the Bears in Chicago, or the Lions in Tampa. Beating a good Eagles team at home is one of those sure things, go bet your house on it. Me? I’ve put $20 on the Bucs moneyline – but you, bet your house, I’m sure it will work out well!

  9. Beej Says:

I wish this could have been in Tampa at 1:00 p.m.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Here’s the 2018 vs 2023 comparison for those that care. Get a win on Monday night and you break the comparison curse.

    2018, Bucs start 2-0
    2023, Bucs start 2-0

2018, in week 2, Bucs offense has 436 yards of offense
2023, in week 2, Bucs offense has 437 yards of offense

2018, Bucs week 3 is on MNF
2023, Bucs week 3 is on MNF

2018, Bucs bye is week 5
2018, Bucs bye is week 5

    2018, Bucs finish season 5-11
    2023, Bucs finish …

Rod Munch says: Baker’s history, which tells us he’s going to turn into a pumpkin at any moment – most likely when he first faces a blitz heavy team that can get pressure on him.

Rod, they’re a lot of butt hurt little boys that comment here, but you may be my favorite of them allowed . Don’t forget you said The Bucs would start 2-7, so I know you’re rooting for them to lose! 😂

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Rod – great idea. Bet the farm! I don’t have a farm but if I did I would bet the Bucs to cover. Post- Tony Dungy, the Bucs have owned the Eagles. If Baker can keep the guys from being over confident And if Todd can somehow call zone defense that his guys actually know their assignments.

  13. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

Rod, sorry for the typos: (there & all). But I was laughing so hard, I guess I just got fat fingers. Dude seriously, I love your commitment to your cause. In fact you may be more like Bake than you think. He’s the kind of guy who keeps fighting, just like you are. Of course he’s fighting to win because that’s his job and his livelihood. But you, you my friend do it solely for the love of the hate. And I can respect that.

  14. Fansince76 Says:

Bucs have a chance to win if Baker plays as well as he has been playing.
Though most times the Bucs seem to screw up primetime games!
Hope its close and they don’t shart themselves.

  15. PbnJ Says:

Should the offense continue to improve & Baker is a catalyst of that, at what point should GMJL move to extend his contract and at what price?

  16. Mike C Says:

Rod, the past is not the future….. stop reading too much Into it.

  17. A Bucs Fan Says:

Interesting parallel’s Rod. Baker has been money under pressure this season so far! He’s got the weapons on the outside to bail him out too and the Bucs defense much, much better than in 2018.

The key for Monday night is the trenches. Whoever wins there will win the game.

  18. August 1976 Buc Says:

Why is something called hate if it is not what someone likes to hear. This is a decent start for the Bucs, and Baker, but nothing has been proven yet, accept for the fact that the Bucs are not laying down and Tanking. Hope the Bucs do well, but just because Rod or any other fan is saying what others like or not, is not hate. It is just a opinion with actual stats from a fan
Have they started well, yes, but its week 3 and a decent measuring stick is showing up on Mon Night. I hope its competative, but we will see.

  19. Infomeplease Says:

Although most NFL fans nationwide will assume the Bucs will lose this game, I believe the team that plays the best will win. Just like the last 2 games, the team that played the best (the Bucs) did win!

I have no clue who will win this game, if the Bucs continue to improve, make plays when needed, and play complimentary football for 60 minutes, they will have a chance for win #3! Should be an entertaining game either way!

  20. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

August 1976 Buc Says: Why is something called hate if it is not what someone likes to hear.

If your question is genuine, then it’s fair. I could write a 500 word answer using nothing but Rod Munch quotes written on JBF and you would see. You could read through the open game thread on JBF (Minnesota is my fav) and your question should be answered. If it was rhetorical, then okay.

  21. Cardiac kidz Says:

We just need to run the ball of the LEFT Side of the line. We have a grader there that will help carve a good Philly path. We need to own the time of possession and force Jalen to throw the ball, he has one target and we can cover in the secondary (he won’t Hurts us). Run the ball.
Hey Devin White; you want to earn the big buck$?? It’s Money Night! Time to show it, bring it and make a statement. Stuff the Eagles run option and you will help your cause.

  22. Rayjay1122 Says:

Dan has spoken, I am a loser… I am something else too and that is being a better human being than Dan.

  23. SufferingSince76 Says:

I can live with a loss in a good game to Philly as long as the Bucs kick the ever loving crap out of the Taints.

  24. Danny Husak Says:

Baker will choke against them Birds…. Baker’s stats 12 of 32 98 yards 3 ints, the real Mayfield, the one who has been on 4 teams in a year and a half will emerge, lol.

NEVER thought I’d call a “Dan” dumb as mud. BAKER was INJURED— NOT HURT. The Bake show is back with a GREAT chance of Smoking the Birds. Danny Baker Buc Esq.

  25. Mike C Says:

Dan, who hurt you, and was it in tou butt?

  26. Mike C Says:

    Your*

  27. DBS Says:

So now it’s our running back after all week trying to make everyone think you were from somewhere else I exposed you already Son of Trask. You insult the team, The site, and fine fans on this site. Now you do your usual. Go from Mayfield fat it’s Bowles. The only thing you have not done is insult Joe personally and we know why.. By the way the bet you wanted to make earlier cool 500? Same words when you wanted to bet takers Trask would be the Starter.

  28. August 1976 Buc Says:

    Dont tell me….
If anyone has been on this siite for many years, then they know Rod is a long time fan. Because the guy says what he thinks about the team, its is his opinion. He is a long time fan of the team that puts out facts sometimes, compliments sonetimes and crticism sometimes. Do I agree with everything? No, but so what. Is Rod a hater of the Bucs NO, he is not. Thank God everyone is not the same. What a boring wotld that would be. peace out.

  29. D-Rok Says:

I just want our team to be competitive, and so far they have been. Sometimes a 14-point loss is a competitive game. If we compete, eliminate stupid mistakes, and lose the Eagles, it’s not the end of the world.

I’d rather lose to Eagles barely and then stomp the Aints because division games are more important.

Unlike last year, this team has an identity, and it’s Team Play.

  30. Duane Says:

The sudden enthusiasm for the 2023 Bucs will instantly evaporate, as far as the media are concerned, if the Bucs lose the Monday nighter to the Eagles. Which of course we may. One game is not a season, any more than the first two games were a season.

But in the Not For Long league, a team or a player or a coach is only as good as what they did five minutes ago .. and then it’s forgotten.

  31. TBSwarm Says:

I hope they do well. Seems they always lay an egg in prime time.

    Go bucs!

  32. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

August 1976, we’ll it’s nice that you support Rod’s right to have an opinion that he can come here and call people stupid and morons and idiots and all the other pleasantries he shares but I don’t have the right to call him a hater. Haha okay dude.

  33. Kidfloflo Says:

Ok Dan I’ll take that bet that his stats are waaay better than that

  34. T. McGee Says:

The media narrative just doesn’t matter. All 32 teams are still in the mix, and all of them have flaws. Everyonr tries to write the season script but we have no idea if the Super Bowl will be 49ers vs. Dolphins or Bucs vs. Bengals or Giants vs Chargers.

It is Week 3… so much can happen before we know anything… especially injuries.

  35. August 1976 Buc Says:

I share the belief in and support for freedom of speech not any one person and their point of view. I said Rod is not a hater of the Bucs. Like it or not freedom of speech works both ways. I was making the point that just because someone says something that others do not like, does not mean its hating. You have the right to say whatever you like (Dont tell…), but remember I said he is not a hater of the Bucs. Who Rod hates, is his business, but as far as the context of what I said is, Rod is not a hater of the Bucs, and his comments about the Bucs are not rooted in a hatred of the Bucs.
Please read the context, before trying to say that I said you have no right to say what you said about Rod, you very much have the right wether everyone or anyone agrees.

  36. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Why Dan? Just to upset fans? Agree – who hurt you?

“the past is not the future….. stop reading too much Into it.”

Yeah and it takes a real nattering nabob of negativity to keep focusing on Baker’s struggles as though that is the sum of his career. They literally NEVER mention his success!!!

    How about some perspective.

Last year was not statistically relevant given Carolina’s woes and getting to LA late so let’s throw that out and look what he did for the team that drafted him the freaking SORRY Cleveland Brown’s franchise!!!

“However, the bad thing is Baker’s history, which tells us he’s going to turn into a pumpkin at any moment”

Did this poster simply SKIP his 3rd year in the league. He was not just good by Cleveland standards he was freaking great…reaching the playoffs for the first time in decades and winning a playoff game on the road for first time in many decades.

Baker’s record with the Browns was right at .500 29-30

The Browns record since Baker left 8-9 and 7-10…for those with comprehension problems that means the Browns got WORSE when they dumped Baker.

The Browns record BEFORE Baker…ZERO…WINLESS..AND 16 the season before they made Baker the #1 pick. The year before that 1-15..before that 3-13.

Again for the comprehension challeged! That means Baker went to a team that won THREE freaking games in the three years before him and had them in the playoffs just three years later. The Browns had TEN LOSING seasons in a row prior to Mayfield…they only had two winning seasons in the 20 years before him. Are we getting an idea of the kind of franchise and culture Mayfield got stuck. This is frequent with #1 draft picks.

I’m not saying Baker is the next coming of Brady, Mahomes, Burrows and several others. His history like Fameis Jameis includes too many ints and too much of a riverboat gambler mentality.

I AM saying there is a CHANCE…time will tell…that Baker could be the next Brad Johnson in terms of success although they obviously had different styles.

IE…Baker is NOT going to carry this team to the SB anymore than the over the hill GOAT was last year. Put him on a GOOD TEAM

  38. BAKERSBucs Says:

why get on this site to spew u r worthless opinions,Ramming Rod obviously was a mommy’s boy he listen to his mothers bs way to much that’s why he is so good at spewing mommy stupid stuff let us know what grade u get when u grow up jr. By then Baker will be in his 2nd year contract buckle up watch the show its been nervous & fun so far.My I say goodrideness BRADY the cheat!!!!!!!!

  40. WyomingJoe Says:

Who the hell thinks the Eagles are unbeatable? Baker sure doesn’t The Bucs sure don’t! Hell, the Vikings almost knocked them off. This game is going to be competitive, but we’re going to win. Screw just showing up and trying not to embarrass ourselves. LETS WIN THE DAMN GAME!

  41. Shane Callahan Says:

I’m just glad I don’t personally know “Dan.” #1- He knows nothing about Mayfield, and #2- I can tell he’d be someone I’d want to knockout in real life.

Rod – great idea. Bet the farm! I don’t have a farm but if I did I would bet the Bucs to cover.

    ———

Last week I told everyone to bet their house on the Bucs, the Bucs ALWAYS win that game vs the Bears at home, big – and if Bowles doesn’t get super conservative in the 4th quarter, they win by a much bigger margin. Still, they won by 10 and easily covered.

This week, the Bucs will win once again, doesn’t mean they’re the better team, it’s just one of those things. The Eagles collapse when they play in Tampa, and Bowles defense destroyed the Eagles, with Hurts at QB, at home not that long ago. Speaking of which, after that game I listened to Philly podcasts and radio, and all the trash up there was talking about how the Eagles had to get a real QB, how Hurts stunk, etc. It was universal in everyone dumping on him saying he was the issue and could never win. Just shows how dumb most fans are.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucfan – You were one of the dummies saying we needed to sign Fitz to a long term deal in 2018 after 2 games.

Anywho, I literally wasn’t bashing Mayfield – I’m saying this is a big game for him. If he can face pressure and not collapse, it could mean he’s turned things around. And no, being a QB on a team with the best offensive line and running game in the NFL, where you’re not asked to do anything but not to lose, one year out of five, doesn’t make you a great QB.

It’s ridiculous how sensitive people are – I’ve been praising him nonstop over the last two weeks, saying I think he’s played great, and people think if you bring up anything past the last two weeks, that Baker will hear about it on Twitter and curl up into a fetal position and not be able to come out for the game because he’ll be too emotionally distraught.

Calm down, not everyone is as weak minded as the people here. Also Baker literally doesn’t care what I say, or you say, good or bad. He’s a multi-millionaire with a hot wife, and is set for life.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

August 1976 Buc – I’m definitely not a hater, I’ve been a Bucs fan since I was a kid, and would wear my orange jacket to school every Monday, win or lose, and it was almost always a win.

In any case, I appreciate the support, but I also don’t care if people want to battle back to my insults. I enjoy the back and forth. Not sure why people on a men’s site think everyone needs to be nice to each other. Half the insults I say to people here are actually said in a complimentary way, while the other half are 100% meant literally, like when I wish people would drink antifreeze.

As for the Baker fanboi, he’s just a nutjob stalker. If you say something like, I wish Baker didn’t wear a headband as often, he’d go psycho and damn you for daring to question him.

As for Baker himself, I’ve been saying I’ve been really impressed by him – and the point of what I wrote was to say we were here in 2018, BUT, Bakers play is a lot more sustainable. Still, his last two years of tape is what it is, and his big issue was when he was facing pressure, and this will be the first game where that could be an issue. It’s going to be interesting to see if he can handle it or not.

  47. August 1976 Buc Says:

Rod…Agree wirh your current assessment of the team and the Good, Bad and Ugly of the fan base 😂🤣.
Lol people this is only a game, and opinions are allowed (contrary to the current evolving culture in the US) where people just shout others down instead of actually listening and talking. What a concept. I have never met a person yet, that I agree with everything they have said. People do not have to agree with me for me to have a good day, thats my choice. And whatever opinions someone else has is not going to determine my day either, thats my choice. ( What a prison so many live in, because of what others say or do, they allow to determine their day. Not me, no thankyou, that is a crappy way to live). What a boring world this would be if everyone agreed on everything, thankfully, thats not how life is.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  48. garro Says:

Some have said they are tuning out the negative crap form all the taling heads. Umm…Respectfully say that is BS. Unless our guys have totally disconncted from the Twitter Book world.

They see it and are playing insanely pissed off football on both sides of the ball.

Thank you “National Media” …Keep up the negative BS takes!

    Go Bucs!

  49. garro Says:

I believe that LVD, who has lived this before has indirectly warned his teammates to “not fall apart” if we do not win this one.

Mental toughness is a real thing. We may need an extra helping of it after this one. I hope our guys are tough enough to refuse to bow down to the doubt or finger pointing that sometimes appears after a loss.

It is up to the coaching staff, and veterans like LVD to be real leaders in that case.

    Go Bucs!

  50. Carl Leonard Says:

Hey Dan. I got news for you. The Eagles suck. What have they done lately? Oh , they LOST the Super Bowl !!! After they bounty gated Brock Purdy. Let’s be honest here. The Bucs have owned the Eagles and they are about to endure a Super Bowl Bust Jalen Hurts butt fumble Hangover , just like he did in the super bowl.whoops! Losers! Is it just me or does he look like he just got done riding a horse since he was 2? . We are talking the same team that gets beat by Washington all the time right? I’m so tired of hearing about the Eagles…Trash..I d k what anyone says about the Bucs this year, i know its esrly but this squad is firing on 6 out of 8 cylinders right now , and if they can get just a little more out of the O- Line and get the running game going…Look Out !! Because The Defense is playing lights out!! And the offense is doing enough to win.. on the other hand The Eagles have allowed 350 yds a g

  51. Carl Leonard Says:

Continued passing yards game and haven’t played any better teams than Tampa has played .. They’re not as good as everyone thinks. Teams are averaging 26 points a game while these teams have also turned the ball over numerous times. While Tampa hasn’t allowed more than 17 a game and hasn’t committed any turnovers. Baker Mayfield can go toe to toe with Jalen Hurts Or Any QB in the league with Mike Evans and healthy Chris Godwin and Tompkins ,Pamer ,etc..and he will OUTDUEL HIM MONDAY NIGHT AND THE EAGLES WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT have AN ANSWER FOR MIKE EVANS WHO IS PLAYING LIGHTS OUT R NOW.. because they cant stop nobodys passing game right now .Im not saying were gonna blow them out , but the BUCS WILL WIN This GAME by 10 points and those points will come off Philly turnovers and this will start a crumbling effect the Losers of the Super Bowl will start to endure.. Im gonna say same exact results as last week 2 turnover by Jalen Butt Hurts…. a few sacks by The Bucs Amazing D….Bucs 27 Philly 17 ….WE OWN THE EAGLES PEOPLE AND THEY RE THE MOST AVERAGE AT BEST THIS YEAR OVERATED FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!!.BUCS QUIET THE CRITICS THIS WEEK ..We dont need recognition, or over rating, we just want to keep winning…and we get the W again this week and Mayfield will outplay Hurts . Can’t wait …LFG BUCS ! make the Eagles look like the Parrots they ARRRRRR!!!

Two consecutive dysfunctional teams for one Baker Mayfield!!!
The Browns organization is a dysfunctional organization that will never sustain consistency and the Carolina Panthers are the same….Only the Rams knew that Baker had what it takes to win and grabbed him when Stafford was hurt. And a Super Bowl winning coach and coach of the year in 2017 (Sean McVay) praised Baker’s ability to learn the offense in a very short order and said he was a Baker’s fan…..I don’t understand why there are so many “Baker haters and doubters) when the young man has always given his best effort regardless of what team he was playing for???? Give the man a break and give him time with one offensive coordinator who can utilize his strengths for the benefit of the team.
