Baker Mayfield Channels Shaun King

September 19th, 2023

Baker Mayfield matches Shaun King feat.

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield did something the past two weeks that neither Tom Brady nor Jameis Winston nor Brad Johnson could pull off.

Mayfield snapped a streak of 23 years of a Bucs quarterback having close to a spotless mark in the first two games of the season. Kevin Patra of NFL.com has the details.

Baker Mayfield has done something Tom Brady never did in Tampa: start a season 2-0 and not throw an INT in either game. The last TB QB to do so was Shaun King in 2000.

That is impressive. Who would have guessed Mayfield would have pulled off something like this a few weeks ago?

So Joe was curious and decided to check. Well, well, well. When King pulled this off in 2000, the Bucs just happened to have made the playoffs. How about that?

Baker is playing like a Franchise QB right now and let’s hope it continues…

  2. Derek Says:

Bucs are one of nine undefeated teams left. Who had that on their bingo card..

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Reading this made me think, did Fitz turn over the ball during his amazing 2-game run in 2018? And yes, he did throw 1 INT.

    BUT… looking up that stat… I noticed this…

    2018, Bucs start 2-0
    2023, Bucs start 2-0

2018, in week 2, Bucs offense has 436 yards of offense
2023, in week 2, Bucs offense has 437 yards of offense

2018, Bucs week 3 is on MNF
2023, Bucs week 3 is on MNF

2018, Bucs bye is week 5
2018, Bucs bye is week 5

    2018, Bucs finish season 5-11
    2023, Bucs finish …

But, not to worry, my preseason picks has the Bucs winning vs the Eagles which would break this comparison.

Just don’t look at the rest of my picks in case I turn out to be right about the hot start.

So it turns out Watson is the Cleveland QB who stinks. He blows a crucial game in Pittsburgh that Baker likely would have won. Watson QB rating=69 Mayfield=104. Cleveland now stuck with Watson’s contract paying a mediocre QB a gazillion dollars. Turns out Watson is the Cleveland QB who forgot how to play quarterback. Meanwhile Baker leads all NFL QBs in third down percentage, the money down.

Some Bucs fans have said they would rather have Carr instead of Bake and we can’t beat the Saints with Bake. After two games:

    Carr (37.5 million)
    44/69, 533, 1 TD, 2 INT, 2W

    Bake (4 million)
    47/68, 490, 3 TD, 0 INT, 2W

  6. Dave Pear Says:

It’s an insult to Baker to compare him to the failed Lazy Burger King.

  7. Axe Says:

PRESEASON IS OVER PEOPLE!. The vikings and bears are the worst two teams in the league. Now the bucs play the eagles and saints. Let’s just wait until the bye week to give praise. The real season starts monday.

  8. HC Grover Says:

Odds v Beagles open at same as the Vikings. Bucs+6.5

  9. adam from ny Says:

wow the chubb injury was so dam bad if you saw it on any other outlet…

prayers go out to nick chubb

  10. August 1976 Buc Says:

No time like the present to measure what you have. Bring on the Iggles, we will see just where this Bucs team is.
Baker Mic’ed up in Minnesota was awesome, you can see a lot more why teammates like this guy. At least as long as you win. But have to say Bake is a breath of fresh air to say the least. The closest thing to what I have seen since 1976 was Winston, but Baker so far has substance to back up the bravado along with 2 wins and no knuckle head plays.
Now for the Tyrannical Trask Mob, sooner or later Baker’s body will betray him, and Trask will get at least start.
But with Baker Reading the Vikes defense and the overall way Baker has done. Trask is 1000 miles from starting right now.

  12. Baking with Canales Says:

Time for some Eagle Pot Pie and Whoda casserole!!!!

    LFG!!!

  13. garro Says:

Hoping he does a bit better than King.

    King massively over achieved.

    Go Bucs

  14. Since76 Says:

I remember being excited about king. Then I I thought I seen a lineman wearing his jersey at practice after the off season. Nope it was King and he never played the same again. Too bad.

  15. Pewter Power Says:

He’s missed a few deep shots and intermediate that would have given us even more points last week but he’ he’ll get better. He’s definitely better than Carr right now

  16. adam from ny Says:

it doesn’t matter if he’s better with carr…

all that matters is if the player is fitting into the system…

    and he is…nicely…so far…

hopefully he get’s his feet entrenched, and comfortable, and we are witnessing him resetting his career right here, right now, in tampa…

then the glazers can give him a bunker type one bedroom underneath the stadium with piping for a ceiling, and let him sleep on a top quality cot while helping the grounds crew out when no one is watching

  17. adam from ny Says:

    better than carr*

  18. Jay Molina Says:

Let’s hope not. The Shaun King-led offense that year was an awful plodding offense that couldn’t score. They only won because of a stifling defense

  19. orlbucfan Says:

I’m just glad we have 2 decent QBs to back each other up. I really like Mayfield’s feistiness and enthusiasm as does the whole team. It’s just how humans react. Sorry to hear the friggin’ Aints won again. However, Sean Payton (who I really detest) isn’t doing so well in Denver. Good riddance.

  20. PewterStiffArm Says:

The first time he throws a pick, or someone fumbles, will be the accurate test of stability and resiliency with this football team. How high we bounce back and how fast is the true measurement. Baker brings a large amount of confidence to this team. We just should be waiting for him or someone on the team to falter so we can have a true and clear picture of how fast we need to bounce back. The sports media will hang us to dry and will be dropping “I told you so’s” as soon as we get beaten. Philadelphia is a good test, personally I think we can beat them, we will have to see and cross some fingers.

  21. Big Fred Says:

    Well said PewterStiffArm.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

Shaun King is the laziest, worst starting QB to ever take a snap for the Bucs. I could have taken snaps and made the playoffs with those defenses.

  23. BAKERSBucs Says:

Axe says let me get this rite so the season doesn’t start til Monday nite so let’s pretend that we didn’t play 2 games already might as well say Trask is starting qb it’s all just a mirage & we might just as well call it a season & c u next season

  24. BAKERSBucs Says:

    & we went undefeated 2 & 0
