Bucs Getting Good Odds To Land Trey Lance

August 25th, 2023

49ers QB Trey Lance.

No, Joe doesn’t believe this will happen. Not when we don’t know if the Bucs will be drafting a quarterback next spring in the first round.

However, analysts outside the Tampa Bay area continue to say the Bucs have no quarterback, no matter what the Bucs say about Baker Mayfield and competing Kyle Trask.

So these learned folks believe Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht would or should be interested in current 49res bust of a quarterback, Trey Lance.

Hey, the theory goes, if Licht is interested in Mayfield, why wouldn’t he be interested in Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 draft, who may have a greater upside?

Our friends in the desert have selected the Bucs as one of the top teams in the Lance sweepstakes, as 49ers general manager John Lynch tries to find a sucker team to take Lance and his contract, as Matt Severance of Sportsline.com documents.

Lance is 2-2 as an NFL starter and certainly showed some signs of his dual-threat ability, but also hasn’t been able to stay healthy. San Francisco can gain $3.76 million in salary cap savings this year by trading Lance but has to do nothing for the time being unless it wants to open a roster spot before Week 1. The team could hang on to Lance and wait for another team to lose a QB to injury, thereby creating a position of leverage for San Francisco. The Niners were in a similar situation in October 2017 when they traded for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Could Lance go somewhere and start today? Almost surely not, especially this close to the start of the year. But Tampa Bay most likely doesn’t have its QB of the future on the roster with Baker Mayfield (starter) and Kyle Trask.

The lin on the Bucs is +500 to land Lance.

Folks outside the state of Florida simply do not think Mayfield is the answer to anything but a trivia question. And they are not sold on Trask when, in their eyes, the Bucs may be in the Caleb Williams sweepstakes (#CollapseForCaleb).

LOL I have to bet $500 to win $600 back? That’s a slam dunk.

  2. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    No thanks

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Lance is a fraud and won’t make the USFL.

  4. Stanglassman Says:

A +500 bet means you can win $500 with a $100 wager; this is also known as 5-to-1 odds. Meanwhile, a -500 bet means you must wager $500 to win $100 (plus your original wager back).

Zero chance the Bucs sign him. 2024 draft is loaded with talent.

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Stan – I’m going to bet the whole farm if that’s real odds, not your explanation, I mean the real Vegas odds.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

Duh I meant the “not” bet.

So I’d have to take the bayonet but Bucs bet T do what I want.

    Why I don’t bet.

  7. MelvinJunior Says:

No. Just NO. We need as MANY ‘picks’ in next years NFL-Draft as humanly, possible. It’s going to be LOADED. That needs to be our goal everyday now, leading up to it… To try acquiring as many as we can get. So, NOOOOOOO!!!!

  8. Tye Says:

    Just NO!

  9. Tony Says:

I’d pass. Maybe they should just have a QB audition.

  10. sasquatch Says:

It’s not a good sign that he couldn’t beat out Sam Darnold. But, hey, if Geno Smith can be salvaged, who knows?

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

Honestly, do we have 4.someodd million for a bust who won’t help this year?

  12. Nate Says:

Send them a 5th rounder would be worth it

  13. Mike S Says:

    No thanks.

  14. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I’ll take my chances with mayfield and those 2 stud wr’s thank you very much.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

‘No, Joe doesn’t believe this will happen. Not when we don’t know if the Bucs will be picking a quarterback next spring in the first round or not.’

Wow Joe, so many ‘no’s and ‘not’s in there. So you don’t believe that it’s gonna happen (me either) because we might or might not be picking a QB next draft. Nostradamus might call that ‘covering ALL your bets’? Well, if he was a betting man that is.

Back at the ranch, I’m curious about San Fran’s QB situation. Excellent defense, but they’re entrusting their offense to either Sam Darnold of Carolina fame or 2nd-year 7th-Rnd pick Brock Purdy? Seems risky, since last year the 49ers lost Garoppolo, Lance AND Purdy to injury (and Garoppolo has moved on & now they want to trade Lance). But hey, I understand that Kyle Shanahan did decree that there’d be an ‘open competition’ for the starting QB position (after talking to Todd Bowles of course) so there’s that. Has Shanahan picked a starter yet?

  16. Fansince76 Says:

    F No!

So, what happens if one makes such a wager, and then SF never moves Lance?

  18. BucU Says:

    Non story here in Tampa.

  19. frozenbuc Says:

Bust Trey Lance would be a perfect fit for the Tampa Bay Busts.

  20. FlBoy84 Says:

Most obvious red flag is Purdy mastering the Niners system as basically an UDFA in his 1st season and Lance as a #1 still obviously struggling with it going into Yr 3. Hard pass.

  21. DailyRich Says:

At least this makes more sense than the people saying we’re a possible trade partner for Jonathan Taylor. Yes, we’re supposed to be in tank mode and have no cap room, but we’re going to trade a #1 pick for a guy who wants to be paid big money.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Mayfield or Trask don’t work out…..just cough up the draft picks and get a QG in next year’s draft…..forget Lance.

  23. Pewter Power Says:

lol brilliant!!! So the Bucs with a first time coordinator are gonna wait until the season starts to sign another quarterback who’s done absolutely nothing then try to get him up to speed in season? He wouldn’t even be active, we already did that with Trask

  24. kgh4life Says:

Lance needs a ton of work on his mechanics and needs game reps. Two things the Bucs can’t give him right now. If the Bucs were rebuilding I would want to see them take a chance.

  25. Winny Testaverde Says:

Our man Lynch…who owes Ira a kidney at minimum for pushing him through to the Hall of Fame…doesn’t get the scrutiny he deserves for trading 3 1st round picks to move up and select this likely bust. If the Bucs do acquire him…he could join Tryon & HallPass in a new boy band called Busts A Move ™️ perhaps.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

“Has Shanahan picked a starter yet?”

Yes – Purdy has been named the starter and Darnold is their QB2… Shanahan announced it a few days ago.

  27. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

Purdy is the QB1 and Darnold is the QB2 in San Fran.

Shanahan announced it a few days ago… I don’t know who I feel worse for – Trey Lance or John Lynch.

I consider John Lynch a good GM but this was a huge miscalculation by him and he gave up a ton of draft capital to draft this kid.

  28. Beej Says:

If you have a quarterback like him, you can’t have a backup like Kyle Trask. You have to have another running quarterback or your entire offense changes when the guy gets hurt, and he surely will

  29. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

So if the 49ers have two quarterbacks, I guess they don’t have any?

  30. Brandon Says:

He wouldn’t be a bad pickup if this had been done at the beginning of camp.. but also…. why aren’t the oddsmakers considering the fact that Lance would count $4 million against our salary cap and we barely even have $1 million worth of room.

Dude is talented… he hasn’t shown a ton, his numbers are decent but to bring him in this season might be a waste of roster spot. For this to make sense, he would need almost an entire offseason to learn the offense, build chemistry with players, etc. I don’t think the odds are good.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Lance is 2-2 as an NFL starter”

That makes him better than Mayfield…but no thanks. The Traskmaster will save this franchise (or another one).

  32. zzbucs Says:

    2+2 int 4 anymore?

Jesus that does makes any sense?

If Mayfield has a good year, he will stay, if he has a bad year, we will wait till the draft hooping for Caleb, and Mayfield will go smewhere else…..Pure and simple

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Beej Says
“If you have a quarterback like him, you can’t have a backup like Kyle Trask. You have to have another running quarterback or your entire offense changes when the guy gets hurt, and he surely will”

Mayfield and Trask are that same scenario…and they are keeping Trask (so far).

  34. T. McGee Says:

Dude should spend a season in the USFL or XFL and at least show what he can do. Same for Trask, really. Wasting prime years getting paid to not play.

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … Sounds like the Bucs & 49ers might be operating in parallel universes … strong defenses, lets-roll-the-dice offenses.

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    i’d take him for a 5th round pick….let dave work with him…

    GO BUCS

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I should say, I really don’t know what the future holds for Trask…I’m just guessing at this point. He may turn out to be a bust. He may turn out elite. He may fall somewhere in the middle.

But I’m all in on him until he proves himself either way, unless he goes to another team. At this point, the way he’s been passed over by an idiot head coach, I can’t help but feel for the guy. I want to see him succeed.

I have almost zero doubts that Baker Mayfield will fail. Those placing faith in him (including Bowles) are setting themselves up for disappointment.

It is going to be ugly this year, of that I have no doubt. I’ve been a fan of the Bucs since the start. That will never stop. But this season will probably make it a struggle to even watch the games. I’m wondering why I should put myself through such pain.

I have not missed a game in over 30 years. For the first time in my life, I am struggling. Oh, I’ll at least have the games on in the background, hoping for a reason to pay attention, but it will just be going through the motions.

I hope Baker Mayfield can prove me wrong…but I cannot escape this feeling that even if he does above average this year, he cannot sustain it…and that would do more hard to the team than good.

  38. Pewter Power Says:

Lynch paid a kings ransom to go up and get this guy didn’t? I’m sure he’s gonna want as much as he can get for this despite how bad he’s been. If he can’t work in Shanahan system he’d be a waste here too

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    do more harm, I mean

  40. Miller5252 Says:

Only reason I can see that would make the Bucs go full crazy and trade for someone like Lance would be to tank. If you already have 2 QB’s that suck and feel like another QB with hardly any playtime is your fix, you 1000% have to be tanking. Bowles needs a winning season here or his career as a coach has come off the rails and will never get back on the tracks of HC if he agrees to this.

  41. Craig Says:

We already have a reclamation project. Finish that and polish it up before moving on to a new one.

He is going to be too expensive to justify the possibility. There is a reason the 49ers want to market him.

    Thank you, but no.

  42. frozenbuc Says:

One more thing, no less than Joe Montana has said Trey Lance is not NFL ready.

  43. Architek Says:

    Makes 0 sense.

The upcoming draft if littered with QB prospects!

Why would you give away draft capital for a 3rd string QB that was drafted to play in a specific system and he’s failing in said system.

    Make it make sense guys.

  44. J Says:

He’s having a HORRIBLE camp so far that’s why he’s buried as their 3 QB. No thanks.

  45. Tony Says:

Please trade Trask for him. 49ers would know what to do with Trask. Lance would fit Canales system better 😂

  46. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Joe, What are the Vegas odds that Caleb Williams is an NFL bust? Where would that leave the Bucs if that happens? New HC new OC new DC. Could you tell us what Vegas odds will be that Caleb Williams will have that much “instant swag” when he walks into any NFL team facility and begins his NFL QB room day 1 lesson plan?

GO!!!!! Baker/Trask Buccaneer QBs of 2023, Not sure about Wolford this season. Sorry to see him get injured I thought he was doing well. Lance could come in and be our scout team QB to learn the Offense. Be another QB here for the 24-season.To maybe help Caleb Williams to learn to be a professional NFL QB. We know there will not be any stinking unneeded QB competition with the NFL superstar Caleb Williams drafted. Here ya go Caleb Williams lead us to the Super Bowl. With all the bedazzlement you have shown even before you were drafted in the NFL we could just tell you were the #1 QB on our team… Absolutely no need for any QB competition, We can see that from Aug 2023,, Well at least the Joes can….

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  47. Dwayne Cone Says:

A Back Up to a Back Up to Baker @ Carolina? Come on. Even an Idiot like me can see that’s a dumb move. Would the Bucs throw in the 1st round pick in 2024 too?
That would knock me down to #2 of the dumbest SOB’s Alive.

  48. SlyPirate Says:

I’d look at Trey Lance if Baker fails. A fifth or sixth pick at best.

  49. JimBobBuc Says:

The Bucs need to be looking at the waiver wire and pick up some OFFENSIVE players and not focus on DB’s like they’ve done recently. Bowles is confident in his defense and yet we keep picking up DB’s???

We need OL, RB, and TE help desperately. Our OL has never played a game together and haven’t changed much since a disastrous 2022. Our RB’s are often hit two yards behind the lines. Why haven’t we picked up any OL on waivers?

We seem to pick RB’s that can catch the ball, but can’t run, evade a tackle, or break a tackle. Why haven’t we picked up any RB’s on waivers?

Finally, our TE1 probably has the most dropped passes than anyone else in training camp — training camp where he’s not getting hit. How’s he going to play when the hitting starts in games? This is our TE1? Why aren’t we looking for TE’s??

  50. David Says:

    N O
    NO
    no

Keep rebuilding and stockpile picks. Trade up and get the QB next draft.

  51. Jason m Says:

    Only for a 7th rounder maybe 6th

  52. PassingThru Says:

I think he’s worth maybe a 5th rounder or 6th grounder; part of it depends upon how much SF is willing to pay for Lance’s salary.

I won’t lie, I thought highly of him in the draft… but I also knew that he had the lowest floor of any of the presumptive first rounders that year.

Draft Pros: Great arm strength, excellent athleticism, kept his eyes upfield under pressure, went through progressions.

Draft Cons: Underwhelming competition in college, not really a pocket passer, way underdeveloped as he didn’t play many snaps in college due to COVID, in all probability he was someone he needed to sit for at least one, perhaps two seasons as he wouldn’t be ready.

From what little I saw from him, he doesn’t look ready and in all probability he never will be. Lance strikes me as one of those many QB prospects who are either destroyed by bad luck, bad injury, or bad coaching. If the confidence deserts them, it’s game over.

  53. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He went to Dallas for only a 4th round draft pick!

  54. Ran-D Says:

    Don’t Even joke about it

  55. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, two days ago, Mina Kines was just throwing around a 2nd Round Pick out there (which literally NO ONE else on ATH agreed with), & I was like, “Shoot, They Will Take A 3rd (IF they can get it) RIGHT NOW, & should feel lucky!!!!” Well, they took a 4th the very next day. I would’ve kept him in their situation, but the damage was done and they obviously already KNEW-IT.
