Todd Bowles Admits Missing A Scrimmage With Jets Hasn’t Helped

August 17th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles was quite clear.

Despite not having a second scrimmage with the Jets, a “sudden change,” as Bowles referred to it  the Bucs got work in while practicing at the Giants complex this morning.

“We got a lot done today,” Bowles said. “We felt good about it. We had some things to work on for the first game, that we wanted to work on.”

But that doesn’t mean the Bucs weren’t — “hurt” is too strong of a word — inconvenienced in a football preparation sense by not having a second scrimmage with the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets this morning.

“Anytime you practice against somebody [else] you get different looks and different situations,” Bowles explained. “So you always want to practice that. It’s good to go against somebody else that way.”

Still, Bowles said getting a curveball thrown at you with a late change is football. Football is a game of adjustments and teams must learn to adjust on the fly.

So in that respect, Bowles said, having a scrimmage with the Jets wiped out is a learning experience. Just not what he would have preferred.

    another day another bowls fail

  3. HC Grover Says:

This trip worked out as well as a Bowles game plan. This is just the start. Oh well. He seems confused about it all.

    Byron Leftwich didn’t.

  5. Red86 Says:

There needs to be a rule against what the Jets did. Unless, it was an act of God or some sort of emergency or danger to the players, fans, and staff, they should be held accountable to keep their agreement for joint practices.

Translation it was a waste of time

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Just found this on a Jets’ sports site, quoting what Saleh had to say about canceling the second practice with the Bucs …

“I like one, one from a safety measure standpoint. I never like two practices because the second practice is usually when the injuries happen,” head coach Robert Saleh said on Tuesday.

“Then the second practice is when the team that knows they kind of got beat, they go into their meeting rooms and the coaches are yelling at them and then they come out and they play with a little more edge and it pisses each other off and all the melees happen, so I just think the second day is very unproductive, except for trying to be reactionary to getting your butt kicked the day before,” Saleh continued.

“So it’s a lot more productive if you have one, it’s a lot safer from a player safety standpoint and you can get a lot more work done on your own and you’re only a couple of days away from a game too, so you don’t want that physical of a practice that close to a game.

“So there’s a lot of reasons for it, mainly safety for the players, and production of work, just avoiding all those useless melees.”

Seems to me that what Saleh didn’t add is that, since the joint practice was up in New York, Tampa got screwed over because they had to scramble to find a practice facility at the last minute, and ended up not being able to accomplish nearly what they’d expected to. Nice guy.

  9. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Seems very strange for the Jets to flake out like that, without even giving a reason.

Seems like a big expense and hassle for the Bucs, to fly their roster up there, house and feed them, just to fight for 1 day, lol

  10. The Beer Whisperer Says:

The Bucs do play up there, so never mind my comment.

But the Jets are still Flakes.

  11. My Momma Says:

They better not puy Karen Rogers out there during the game. He may pay the price.

The J E T S jets jets jets should forfeit their 1st rd pick to the Bucs!!

So the Jets pulled the same stunt with the Panthers last week regarding their 2nd day of joint practices… Saleh kinda seems like a POS.

  15. caradoc Says:

Bowles is getting publicly clowned. It’s clear he’s out of his depth.

  16. Thunder Says:

Its not Bowles fault. Just the Jets being the Jets. Irrelevant.

  17. WyomingJoe Says:

Has anyone seen any notes from today’s practice?

  18. WyomingJoe Says:

Just read how many in the NFL MEDIA ECHO CHAMBER are very concerned about Brock Purdy’s “many” interceptions in training camp. Kyle Shanahan said the he’d rather have Brock throw them in training camp rather than in games. And he’s not in the least concerned. He views the INTs as “learning experiences.”How refreshing! Shanahan likes the way Brock “turns it loose” during practice. Again, how refreshing. Kinda wish the Bucs coaches had that attitude.

PlAy your starters for a half bro
    There problem solved
PRE season is half speed anyway

  20. Rod Munch Says:

What a jackball third rate organization the Jets are for canceling a scrimmage, and to make it even more insulting, doing it on a Thursday, instead of Wednesday, since the Bucs could have just stayed in Tampa for an extra day instead of having to scramble to get a place to practice on Thursday.

Also, typical of the cowardly Bucs under Bowles, they just shut up and take it. Would Arians have done that?

This is part of the reason why this team is destined to be losers. Other teams are already spitting on the Bucs. This is like when Sean Peyton completely humiliated Dirk who refused to defend himself or the team. Embarrassing.

  21. Crickett Baker Says:

I thought, under the circumstances, it was very cool to acquire the Giant’s facility for our practice. Someone was really on the ball. The Jets seem to have little integrity.

  22. garro Says:

Bush league stuff from Woody and the Jets!

    Go Bucs!

  23. kyle Says:

why was the 2nd practice cancelled? Is anyone talking about how the Jets might be aholes for cancelling? im sure the schedule was planned many months in advance?? then we had to practice at the stinking giants facility and the boys couldnt use the showers and locker room?
