Receivers Battles Appear To Be Over

August 26th, 2023

Veteran receiver David Moore.

There was no late Adam Humphries-like rise from the Bucs’ receivers corps this preseason.

The decisions look rather easy for Tampa Bay general manager Jason Licht and Todd Bowles.

Russell Gage’s blown knee opened a door, but no surprised emerged.

After Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, rookie playmaker Trey Palmer is certainly a lock for the roster. Deven Thompkins’ 22 yards this preseason didn’t match his production in practice, but he’s sure to make the team because of his returner skills and experience. Veteran David Moore led the Bucs in preseason with eight receptions and seven first-down catches, and he likely would have had another big one if Kyle Trask’s throw to him when he was wide open tonight was on target.

That’s five receivers Joe is certain are a lock for the roster.

Undrafted rookie Rakim Jarrett out of the University of Maryland has impressed all summer and led the team in receiving yardage in the preseason. He catches what comes his way and has some juice.

Will the Bucs dare to cut him and see if he clears waivers to land on their practice squad? Joe would bet a few bucks Jarrett is protected on the initial 53. Most teams start with at least six receivers, though five is not unheard of.

I think Rakim makes the team, and Kaylon Geiger heads back to the practice squad. Rakim just flashed more.

  2. RGA Says:

Nooo, they cannot try to move Jarrett through wavers. He’s to good and a steal as an undrafted free agent.

  3. RGA Says:

Jarrett would also get plucked from our practice squad.

  4. Pewter Power Says:

They better keep 6 because Evans is up there in age plus Tampa is the hamstring capital of the NFL

  5. Usfbuc Says:

This is looking like a great group, made even better by the fact that we have a late round pick and two undrafted players in this group.

  6. Herbiebuc Says:

When trey Palmer see the ball he get the ball his hands are for real! Imagine the double coverage mike is going to get the seam should be food for trey this season ! 10 win season 3x division champs #screenshotit

  7. RGA Says:

Palmer and Jarrett look like bonifide NFL receivers. No chance the Bucs try to place Jarrett on the practice squad. It will be Evans, Godwin, Palmer, Moore, Thompkins, and Jarrett. Geiger who’s looked good goes to the practice squad, Warner maybe as a sentimental guy.

  8. J Says:

I think Jarrett has forced the Bucs hand into keeping him.

  9. adam from ny Says:

evans – the man part 1
godwin – the man part 2
palmer – dude is crazy in the head lol
jarrett – young & polished, looks like pro receiver, will get better
moore – vet presence needed in the back ups
thompkins – returns and a bit of receiving
geiger – if 7 get kept

  10. Larrd Says:

Not sure how UFA Jarrett doesn’t rate an Adam Humphries comparison. I would keep him over Moore or Thompkins, for sure.

  11. rrsrq Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they returned Cephas Johnson to the PS, he has size and may be versatile with more upside than some of the other guys. Will Bowles throw son of Kurt Warner a bone…

  12. Mike Says:

    Jarrett better make the 53.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jarrett makes it with Geiger & Warner on the PS.

  14. Wild Bill Says:

    Size, speed and hands!!!!

  15. David Says:

    They definitely keep six.

Geiger’s back to the practice squad.

Running back is where they might lose someone. White, Edmonds, and Tucker, assuming he’s healthy, will probably be the only 3.
Brown & Laird can go practice squad. Vaughn, I’m not sure what happens.

  16. Infomeplease Says:

This group of WRs look very serviceable! So glad the team got more discipline as far as
penalties go. Should be an enjoyable season unlike the last! LFG!!

  17. Tony Says:

    WE’RE GONNA SIGN MICHAEL CLAYTON.

  18. ScottyMack Says:

It is highly doubtful that Geiger, Warner or Miller get plucked off waivers, making all three available for the practice squad. The top six are as Joe stated and it’s an easy decision.

RBs might be a bit more difficult, but I guarantee you that Tucker will not sniff the WW. Some team would definitely snatch him up.

  19. Fred McNeil Says:

If we keep seven receivers I’d be surprised. I doubt we’d go with three RBs or TEs. Would we give up an Olineman??? Risky. Geiger has a decent shot at clearing waivers. Better than Ronnie Brown. Heck, I think Durham would clear waivers too. Dafney looks pretty good in his stead.

  20. Fred McNeil Says:

Well…we might replace an offensive lineman with a castoff.

  21. StretchOMatic Says:

    Kade Warner has been cut

  22. Power Of Pewter Says:

Kaylen Geiger and David Moore were cuts, along with Kade Warner. 2 will be signed to practice squad I would think.
