Maulin’ And Ballin’ Tristan Wirfs

Tristan Wirfs

Joe couldn’t wait to turn on the film and study each of left tackle Tristan Wirfs’ 25 snaps last night against the Ravens.

Joe highly recommends it to any Bucs fan. It was a beautiful, beautiful sight. So soothing.

While Wirfs likely would nitpick himself in his first NFL game at the position, Joe believes the eyeball test would have most fans thinking they were watching a perfect game. Wirfs was mauling people in the run game, and it looks like he’ll have plenty of physical company from 6-6, 335 pound veteran Matt Feiler next to him at left guard. He was sharp in his Bucs preseason debut.

Plus, Wirfs was money as a pass blocker, just too big and too strong with sweet feet. Nobody threatened a quarterback on Wirfs’ watch, and he did a nice job picking up a blitzer on Kyle Trask’s touchdown throw to David Wells.

Such encouraging stuff from the Bucs’ offensive line last night.

No team would go tru Wirfs and Feiler. They’d just go right and now center. Dark days ahead

  2. Divis Says:

Lol “through the center” then Baker just scrambles left and were right back to having to go through Wirfs and Feiler

  3. PbnJ Says:

Why don’t we see how Hainsey holds up with significantly improved play at Guard? Life as a Center is no fun when the guys on each flank are turnstiles. Even if Mauch is equally inept as our guys on the right last season, having Fieler on his left is still a big improvement.

  4. MadMax Says:

I knew Wirfs would be just fine at LT….so nice to see.

Save room in the cap for that big contract Mr. Licht, he deserves it.

Man I love when my picks work out!

  5. Hodad Says:

Cody Mauch will be the starting center next year, Licht pretty much said that last night. Having such an athletic center with that attitude for the next ten years. See Joe, nothing to worry about moving Wirfs to LT.

  6. dmatt Says:

I had no doubt bout Wirf’s ability to right the ship, or shall I say(left the ship)🤔
He knew he’d have no problem making the shift, he just didn’t want to come off as cocky n arrogant, that’s just not his personality. An all pro American driver on the streets of the USA would demonstrate the same skill sets if switched to the left side of the road. They’d just have to adjust to the small nuances of the switch. Left, right, or indifference, once a pro is always a pro. Wirf is gon be nasty!!

Hodad … ‘Cody Mauch will be the starting center next year, Licht pretty much said that last night.’

Interesting idea, but I can’t remember JL saying anything about a move like that last night Hodad. Was watching Hainsey some last night, and he did fine I thought. Apparently he got stronger too, because I saw him get rag-dolled too many times last year, but not last night.

Our starting OLine looked reasonably solid I thought, in both pass blocking & run blocking. Our backups looked adequate in pass blocking overall, but didn’t seem to shine in run blocking. Got a hunch we’ll be picking up a versatile veteran OLineman soon enough as insurance.

  8. Hodad Says:

Lisien again, he said we viewed Mauch coming out as a guard, center. Remember how they moved Marpet three times. One of those times Marpet played a whole season at center. I think Licht really wanted Cody next to Jensen to learn for a year, but he’ll still do that. To soon to give him the responsibility to be starting center, but he’ll be ready next year. As good as Hainsey is, he’s not the athlete Mauch is. Cody will be a monster in the middle.

  9. Fansince76 Says:

The O line played F-ing great last night!
i am freaking pumped for the season to start!
    Go Bucs!

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Hodad … Now that you mention it, I do remember JL saying that they viewed Cody coming out as a Guard, Center. Got a hunch though that if this OLine clicks this year, Bucs will be reluctant to mess with it. That’d mean re-signing both Wirfs _a no-brainer) & Feiler, and almost surely drafting 1-2 OLinemen for depth/future replacements. I just can’t see Leverett as the answer at Center if Hainsey ever went down.

  11. Lt. Dan Says:

Lt. Dan has repeatedly told at least one of the Joe’s to “RELAX” about Wirf’s move to the left side. Preseason games may actually be beneficial to gauge a players performance against live action. Who woulda thought?

  12. David Says:

The line looked very promising last night. Run and pass. The starters and some of the back ups.

  13. D Cone Says:

Heard someone mention Route 66 that used to run thru Washington. Joe Jacoby would clear a path for John Riggins to run. Route 78 is under construction in Tampa and once open, defensive traffic will start flowing that way and free up lanes on the other side of town. Buckle Up.

  14. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Everyone had better pump the brakes on Oline greatness-Remember they were going against Ravens #2’s on D.

  15. Infomeplease Says:

I like when a plan comes together! So far so good!!

  16. Cobraboy Says:

Even the Casual-Hating Goedeke looked as solid as possible all game.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

@TBBFS76: the OL pretty much stoned the #2’s, which you’d expect…IF they were a good OL.

Now, IF the #1 OL struggled against the #2DL…which they did not…THEN, it’s time to “pump the breaks.”

The proof comes against MN, but so far, the evidence is encouraging…

  18. Duane Says:

I was pleasantly surprised seeing Big 78 on his feet and directing traffic down the field. There appears to be a bit of a running game, as well as play action. Not sure if they were holding back or its just now coming together. I liked what I saw.

  19. Proudbucsfan Says:

I was worried about the Oline as a whole unit, this game was very encouraging.
The Raven’s typically have a solid Dline depth so this was a good test. 🤞for them to carry into Minnesota.

  20. garro Says:

Don’t know how Fieler did with his pass blocking but he took his man into a different area code on one of the run plays I saw. Offically not worried about Wirfs. Right side looks better than I thought they would. Hainsey still has some work to do but looks improved. Hope they all sttay healthy! Second team guys looked really rough in pass pro.

    Go Bucs!
