Kyle Trask: Refreshing To Have Open-Minded Coach

August 22nd, 2023

Kyle Trask

Competing QB Kyle Trask seems like a classy, respectful guy.

So Joe wasn’t surprised when Trask tried to be as gentle as possible while taking a backhanded shot at a coach.

Joe doesn’t know the coach(es) to which Trask was referring, but fans are free to guess.

Trask was interviewed on the latest Below The Surface feature at Buccaneers.com and dropped the quote below as he raved about new Bucs playcaller Dave Canales.

“There’s a lot of coaching styles that are, with all due respect, you know, pretty barbaric and they want to do it one way,” Trask said. ” But I think Dave has been around a lot of very effective schemes and he’s very open-minded. You know that’s a very refreshing thing to see, the positivity he brings and his ability to like really get people focused and having fun.”

It sounds like on a past team — last year’s Bucs, high school, college? — Trask felt like he had a coach that was as my-way-or-the-highway guy. Perhaps Canales’ style is a reason Trask has progressed so well this year.

  1. Buc4evr Says:

Perhaps he is referring to Bowles. Lol.

  2. Doughboy Says:

Kansas City Chiefs 3rd string qb Shane Buechele is way better than Trask at this point.

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

Welp…”they want to do it one way,”. I think we all know a recent OC that would run up the gut on first down nearly EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Looking at you Mr. Leftwich.

  4. Buddha Says:

This is about Lefty not Bowles. Canales strikes me as an innovator and extremely well educated on contempo rary offense.

  5. Toad Bowels Says:

I think he is referring to former Bucs QB coach Clyde Christensen who basically did ZERO to develop him for the past 2 years.

It’s a tribute to Dave Canales that Trask has made enough progress in 4 months to basically finish in a dead heat with 5 year starter and former #1 draft pick Baker Mayfield.

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

Of course he’s talking about the unemployed idiot formerly known as B Leftwich.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Buc4ver … ‘Perhaps he is referring to Bowles.’

Do you REALLY believe that? And IF you really do, what have you actually seen Bowles do that would lead you to that supposition? Looked to me last year like he let Leftwich run the offense (and yes, Lefty ran it right into the ground … without ever even establishing a running game).

Also looks to me like Bowles is letting Canales run this offense. As the MFWIC he’s probably given Canales some broad guidance, but Bowles has never struck me as a micro-manager (which BA & his Red Pen apparently became with Leftwich just to keep the offense afloat).

And BTW, Kyle Trask strikes me as a very thoughtful young man who’s not about to take back-handed swipes at his head coach ever, much less when he’s in the middle of a QB competition.

    The Bowles Curse

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

Brady had no problem with Leftwhich for 3 seasons…Ill take his opinion over Trask.

  10. SB~LV Says:

    Damning !
    Thanks BA
    Thanks JL
    Thanks G’Boy’s

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It seems to me that Trask was mismanaged by BA & Bowles……giving the backup role to Gabbert. Trask’s development would be much farther along this year. Perhaps he would have been our starter.

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Brady did not want an inexperienced backup QB

  13. Dwayne Cone Says:

A coach that implemented a 3 days on and a day off from practice schedule to reduce the risk for injury sounds far from Barbaric. doubt it’s Bowles.

Perhaps Brady was telling a story about how Belechik had the team run ‘the hill’ every day to give them stamina and an edge in the 4th quarter of games. No doubt in my mind that Trask hung on every word and took studious notes.

In New England there was only one way of doing things.

Taking a stab at who would start is one thing but to take a guess on this Joe might limit his access. Smart Guy.

In New England there was only one way of doing things.

  14. MadMax Says:

Welp, its official, Bucs have named Baker as their starting QB!

  15. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Bowles just named Baker Starting QB

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Bowles and Leftwich are the only two who could have a losing season with Tom Brady at QB. Pitiful.

  17. WyomingJoe Says:

I knew it. Trask is finally showing his true colors by sucking up to Canales. The problem with Trask is that he needs to be cuddled every other minute like he was in college. I’ve heard from several sources within the Bucs hierarchy that he often sulks and whimpers if he isn’t praised for making routine plays against high school defenses. Sadly, sometimes he cries at night while polishing his participation trophies. I hate to see a 25-year-old act like that. I admit that if Baker doesn’t start I’ll be PO’d. But if Trask doesn’t start the suicide hot line will be flooded with calls from Gator fans. Everybody, chill out…

  18. Infomeplease Says:

Trask people, haven’t you been paying attention to anything going on at one Buc place???? The competition, if there ever was one, is over, finito, done!!!! Get over it! LFG!!!!!!

  19. My Momma Says:

Nice pick up Joe! I was wondering when someone was going to address Trask’s comments, when he used the word ‘Barbaric’. I recall a training camp note that you made last year when it looked like Leftwich was berating Kyle. My Momma believes that Kyles comment was most certainly directed at Leftwich. It almost seemed like he was saying ‘Look where you are now.’.
My Momma especially believes that Kyle is very intelligent. When it was mentioned during this preseason how quickly he picked up the offense and how Kyle would finish speaking the name of the play before Canales could get it out of his mouth. Makes My Momma think the Kyle was the brighter of the two, between he and Leftwich.

  20. Leighroy Says:

My thoughts immediately went to Dan Mullen after reading that quote. Dude was a hot head who could coordinate the heck out of an offense but couldn’t manage an entire team effectively. I’m sure his “passion” wore on Trask despite their success his final year.

  21. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

yeah one way, last year… Run middle for no gain, run left for a loss, throw for three yards on 3rd down and punt. Repeat 10 times and then lose.

  22. Aceofaerospace Says:

I think it was a combination of The BlairWitch and Clyde. Both were terrible.

  23. LW420BUCS Says:

My guess, like many others, has to be Leftwich. Might even be Bucco Bruce but I doubt it. Now we need a clever nickname for Baker Mayfield…

    Go bucs!!

  24. ATLBuc Says:

Brady had no problem with Leftwhich for 3 seasons…Ill take his opinion over Trask.

That’s because Brady helped concoct that mess of an offense after he forced BA and his red pen out of the HC position

  25. Drew Says:

Leftwich was in over his head as an OC and Brady tuned out due to off field issues last year. Which lead to Trask not receiving proper coaching. Leftwich has always been my way or the highway. Dial back to his failure as a QB in Tampa and it becomes very apparent.

Canales is refreshing and I love his energy.

  26. JackStanton Says:

Well fans, the season is over. Time to start thinking about who our next head coach will be, because our next losing season is just about to get started. To call Baker Maysfield a has been QB is a misnomer, he is a never-was QB. Bowles and Leftwich have royaly screwed the pooch with this call. From the Super Bpwl to the toilet bowl in 2 seasons, guess I will start dreaming about next year’s chances of getting a winning coach for our team. I have been a fan ever since our first draft pick right up to now, and this is the first time I have ever felt this bad about our team.

  27. Duane Says:

Trask may well have not been referring to any Bucs coaches. When he played at Florida it was under Dan Mullen who was very much a “my way or the highway”
coach, and of course he ran the Gator program into the ground which has not recovered since.

  28. Baker bustemup Says:

well jackstanton says u r not a long time fan & if u really were I wud suggest take u r no sense to cleveland they enjoy jokers such as u.i wud never down grade any team I was truly a long time fan.i can name many years bucs had bad even worse teams than this year’s ensemble so keep u r garbage to u r self BAKER is here hopefully tro stay good luck bucs

  29. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    /sarcasm

  30. garro Says:

Publicly he says this. Five minutes later he is….
telling his agent “get me out of Tampa”.

    What a cluster#$%!

    Go Bucs!
