Is Shaq Barrett Quicker Than Before His Injury?

August 21st, 2023

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

Quite an observation at One Buc Palace over the weekend.

Veteran Bucs edge rusher Cam Gill, known for his half-sack in the Super Bowl that drove Jason Pierre-Paul mad, was a guest on the Buccaneers Radio Network and suggested Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett looks quicker now than before he blew out his Achilles.

That had Joe doing a double-take. Yes, Joe rewinded the audio and that’s in fact what Gill said. And Gill has been around Shaq for our years and isn’t a hot-take blowhard.

Shaq sure looks great. He was giving the Jets a ton of trouble in Wednesday’s joint practice in New Jersey. Joe saw Shaq in the team hotel walking quite gingerly that night. But Shaq was back at practice Thursday and told reporters that his extended work in pads drained him but he bounced back well.

Joe’s not expecting Shaq to be quicker, but Gill’s comments lead Joe to believe Shaq will be the player he was right before the injury in Week 8 last season. That would be fantastic.

  1. Cleanhouse Says:

Should have kept JPP and Suh around much longer than we did.
These pompous mistakes by the front office were the beginning of our decline into this current clown show. Oh we’ll just replace them w JTS and Logan Hall
    What a sad joke.

  2. NJbucs23 Says:

Hey cleanhouse, as much as I like md both of them and believe me I loved Suh, but it was time to move on from them. They both were past their time.

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bionic $41,309,594.59 Man ($6,000,000 in 1973 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $41,309,594.59 today, an increase of $35,309,594.59 over 50 years), if you’re old enough to remember that show.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    Shaq is back?

  5. SB~LV Says:

    lol

  6. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

If you can puts bets on Comeback Player of the Year… that’s whom I would choose as a favorite atm.

  7. Steven007 Says:

Joe in MI, yes, the 41,309,000 man just doesn’t roll off the tongue quite the same, haha. Here’s hoping that Shaq has a nice little resurgence this year.

  8. Obvious Says:

Moving past their leadership was an equal to if not greater loss. Besides that, I heard that Suh went onto another Super Bowl and had another fantastic year…

Didn’t hear much about JPP but we were Surely left wanting without their leadership. I mean, imagine “what could have been” if either of them were still around for Tryon or Hall, or….. Now THAT’S where the real loss was if nothing else.

  9. Craig Says:

Shaq looked at least as well as he did in the before injury day, not sure if he is quicker.

The generally quicker D-line will give him more opportunities and he will take advantage of it. Not that he is quicker, but that there will be fewer roadblocks in his way because there will be more threats to contend with.

  10. Obvious Says:

And what an amazing attitude that Shaq has. You would think he might be curled up in a ball in the corner with the devastation that fell apon his family.

And maybe for a time he was. Instead, somehow he gathered All his courage and strength, picked his family back up and has not only shined but is excelling.

Real Courage, Real Man, Real Tough and a Hero to not only his family but to fans around the planet. Extremely Impressive with Enormous Energy this man has.

  11. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

If he had a barky leg before and now he is healthy then there is some logic to this assertion.

  12. Buc4evr Says:

Yeah JPP and Suh are past their prime. Only one problem, they are still better than Hall and JTS. Sad but true.

As far as Shaq, the jury is still out. I would expect him to play, but maybe he has a minor Achilles issue later in the season and needs some downtime.

  13. KingLDavid54 Says:

    Shaq = Simeon

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

Is he going to by pass jTS as the best outside pass rusher?

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

TBBF was quicker after an injury…..quicker to the refrigerator.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

    Hope.

  17. Boss Says:

shaq will never be Simeon Rice.

That dude was lightining quick. When we needed a sack he got it EVERY time. Dude would turn beast mode on 3rd down.

shaq might be better against the run though

  18. Jerseybuc Says:

Imagine being named clean house n complaining about washed up jpp n suh. Two players who love but they are done unfortunately unless they came in the cheap which they did not

  19. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Was the horrid waste of money on the oft injured Akiem Hicks wise compared to paying Suh?? Yeah Suh was so washed up he started for the Eagles in the Super Bowl………Some of you guys should engage your limited IQ before you touch the keyboard.

  20. sasquatch Says:

Sure would be nice if he’s fully back, as we’re on the hook for 20 million in cap this year regardless. I think he’s still got guaranteed money next year as well… so here’s to a few more productive years!

  21. Fred McNeil Says:

We won’t see Shaq till September. We might see a little JTS, though…maybe. I really want to see Watts, Gill, and Ramirez Saturday Night.
I imagine we will try to keep five OLBs. Ramirez might be the easiest to stash on the practice squad.

  22. Duane Says:

Cleanhouse – WTF are you blabbing on about “this current clown show”? We haven’t played a down yet in a game that matters. Just because the blabbers and haters claim the Bucs have already gone to hell in a handbasket doesn’t make it so.

Those two guys you’re whining about were old, injured and slow. Licht and Bowles set out to make our defense younger and faster … and have succeeded in both areas. Whether that translates into a better defensive performance this season compared to last season is TBD.

    Take your trolling elsewhere.

  23. Buccos Says:

Suh and JPP were way better run stuffers than what we have now. That much is obvious if you look at our ranking against the run. Stats don’t lie. And if you can’t play the run and you aren’t sacking the QB, then what are you actually doing?

  24. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Duane you know it’s possible for the Bucs to have gotten younger and faster on defense and this still be a clown show.

Signing Baker Mayfield and secretly promising him the job was a clown move.

If it doesn’t survive the smell test enough to make a public declaration about it – that’s a good indication that its a bad idea.

Having said that Shaq is moving around pretty good in tape we’ve all seen.

There is real cause for optimism on this defense – and I really don’t like the 3-4 in Tampa. Just feels wrong.

It’s just so cloak and dagger with all of this sitting starters business. Hard to get a good feel for what’s upcoming and that appears to be by design.

  25. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Maybe Shaq cut back on his wife’s cooking. Pushing away from the table, a little earlier.

Last time I saw Shaq, he didn’t look like he had missed any meals, lol

I’m a Shaq fan, by the way. And a big fan of good cooking.

  26. Wild Bill Says:

I pray that his Achilles holds up all season. I was a USTA ranked singles player in my younger days and just a partial tear took me out for most of a year. His could be a long term nagging injury that could limit his playing time. Or not. Mine was only a partial tear but the pain was bad for 6 months and was fully healed later the same year. Of course I ignored my docs advice and started stretching and jogging sooner than I should have, sure hope Shaq is healed completely!

  27. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    it’s entirely possible

  28. Brandon Says:

Why not? I’m quicker, faster, and recover sooner since I had my Achilles reconstruction.

  29. Brandon Says:

    Wild Bill…

Achilles reconstruction has come a long ways since you were younger. They had me stretching in four weeks and jogging in eight weeks. You probably were closer to what PT recommend now anyways.

  30. HC Grover Says:

Good for him. It ain’t ez coming back from injury. Hope he stays good he deserves it for all the hard work.

  31. Stanglassman Says:

The Jets on hard knock had their guy firing off the line hitting the sled in a competition. You could see it translate in the first few snaps of the game. I hope the Bucs DL practice this drill.

I thought Shaq may start on pup and Jensen would play game 1. Now it seems to be the opposite.
