Chase McLaughlin Wins Bucs’ Kicker Job

August 21st, 2023

Chase McLaughlin is the Bucs’ new top-dog kicker.

Buccaneers kicker Chase McLaughlin quietly had a strong spring and summer, which means he’s been consistent and fans aren’t briging up the last name Aguayo, Brindza, Gay, Catanzaro, Folk, Santos, Murray and Nugent.

Those other names are failed Bucs kickers of years past, though some of have gone on to standout careers elsewhere. Heck, Matt Gay even has a Rams Super Bowl ring.

McLaughlin won the Bucs kicking job today as Tampa Bay cut competing kicker Rodrigo Blankenship.

Big-legged McLaughlin, 27, had standout stretches of perfection in training camp, and he’s been perfect in preseason in limited work. Last year, McLaughlin had a decent season for Indianapolis nailing 30 of 36 field goals, but he stood out for going 9-of-12 from 50 or more yards.

Joe hopes Jason Licht jumps in his famous pool if the Bucs beat the Vikings in 20 short days on a McClaughlin bomb from 53 yards.

Good deal. Goggle Eyes could not even see the ball.

  2. Derek Says:

Jonathan Taylor has received permission to seek a trade Joe.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Has a good leg…..punter & kicker are the least of our problems…..

Coverage & blocking on ST seems to still be an issue.

  4. Goodbuc'nlife Says:

Who’s winning the QB job? That’s the 1mil dollar question. Being down by 14 in the fourth quarter with 10 min remaining will require a competent QB, not a kicker. Todd Bowlwes, please don’t mess this up.

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

You Sunk My Blankenship sealed his fate when he doinked from a distance less than an extra point.

  6. D Cone Says:

Doink is not a good sound to a kicker.

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Re-sign Succop. We need a second kicker on the roster until Chase proves himself in regular season. Every other kicker has been a disaster for Jason.

  8. Infomeplease Says:

The good news is that when TB calls for a 53 yarder the fans will have some sort of hope for 3 points! Not like last year!

  9. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Jonathan Taylor??

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Chase signed a 1-year contract with us for $1.1 mil this year, but has a Market Value of $4.2 mil according to Spotrac. Can’t wait to see what 2024 brings if he does really well this year. Of course, could easily say the same thing about Baker Mayfield, Devin White, Antoine Winfield, Greg Gaines and a number of others. They’re all up for renewal next year.

And Derek, we’d all probably love to sign Jonathan Taylor, but the Bucs are currently MINUS $497,707 on the Top-51 salary CAP. It’ll surely be back in the positive range after the cutdown to 53 players (it has to be), but we’ll probably still only be around a couple mil to the good after the cutdown, and JL will want to hold that for injury replacements more than likely. It’d be nice to have money, but I’m surprised the media hasn’t already nicknamed us the Po’ Boys for the next couple years. Now’s a very good time to be developing some youngsters for the future.

    @ Derek

Now that would be an interesting development…

My only question is – what will Indy want as compensation?

I wouldn’t give up our 2024 first round pick or second round pick…

But I would trade our 3rd round pick in 2024 and our 4th round pick in 2025.

Taylor will want a new contract ASAP so Indy doesn’t have much leverage. They should take what they can.

We would also need to clear cap space somehow – probably by extending Mike Evans.

  12. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Derek

My only concern is the tread left on Taylor’s tires and there are rumors of a current back injury.

I don’t want the Bucs to waste any more resources on another Russell Gage type situation…

If we were one player away from being a championship caliber team than Licht would do whatever he needed to do to acquire Taylor.

But we’re a season or two away from being at that level.

  14. Mike S Says:

    Bucs got a good kicker.

  15. Divis Says:

Joe I hear Jonathan Taylor is up for grabs? Will the Bucs make a move?

Here is my team roster and practice squad so far assuming no more injuries. I left room for Spytek and Licht to sign a couple of guys to the practice squad after the cuts. Ryan Jensen to initial 53 roster then on to the injured list.

  17. Toad Bowels Says:

    Hard NO to Jonathan Tayor

  18. TF Says:

Let some other schlep pay Taylor. It doesn’t matter who we put back there at RB. Gonna be a hot mess. We gots plenty of young talent at the overrated RB position. If you are not named McCaffrey or Henry it kinda don’t really matter.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Proposed Trade:
    • Shaquil Barrett + Draft Compensation for Jonathan Taylor

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers Receive:
    • Player: Jonathan Taylor
    • Age: 24
    • Cap Number: $4,304,000

    Indianapolis Colts Receive:
    • Player: Shaquil Barrett
    • Age: 31
    • Salary: $14,602,941
    • Draft Compensation: [To be Specified]

    Analysis:

In this trade proposal, the Buccaneers are putting forward Shaquil Barrett, along with additional draft assets, in hopes of securing the services of the Colts’ young and dynamic running back, Jonathan Taylor. The financial dynamics of this trade are significant. Tampa Bay would be shedding Barrett’s heftier salary in favor of Taylor’s more manageable cap hit. This acquisition would bolster the Buccaneers’ offensive capabilities, while the Colts would benefit from a veteran pass rusher and the potential of future young talent from the draft.

    Additional Note:
The Buccaneers are rich in young talent, particularly in the outside linebacker position. This depth makes the prospect of trading Shaquil Barrett a feasible consideration.

  20. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Shaquil Barrett’s Salary: $14,602,941
    Jonathan Taylor’s Cap Number: $4,304,000

    Cap Relief = Barrett’s Salary – Taylor’s Cap Number
    Cap Relief = $14,602,941 – $4,304,000
    Cap Relief = $10,298,941

So, in this proposed trade, the Buccaneers would gain a cap relief of approximately $10.3 million.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    $6,650,000 in Dead Money

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Of course in any major trade, medical evaluations are crucial. Both teams need to ensure the players they’re acquiring are healthy. A failed medical can change or even cancel a trade, especially when significant money and draft picks are involved.

  23. Eating L's Says:

Licht should definitely pat himself on the back for having a kicker who can kick a 47 yard field goal for the new era of the kick it now bucs.

  24. Eating L's Says:

Why would the bucs bring in Taylor to get hit before he can even accelerate or make a cut?

  25. Joe Says:

Why would the bucs bring in Taylor to get hit before he can even accelerate or make a cut?

Because he has twice better yards after contact than Rachaad White.

Besides, Taylor got 800+ yards on the ground behind a sh!tty line. But you didn’t hear him whine about it. He just got the job done. Adapt, adjust, overcome.

  26. BucsFan81 Says:

Hell no to trading Shaq. He is our best pass rusher besides Vita and let’s be honest this offensive line is average at best probably more like poor so unless your getting Barry Sanders no one is running behind this line.

  27. Toad Bowels Says:

    Proposes Trade

    Jonathan Taylor goes to Bucs

Sheriff Andy Taylor, HOF RB Jim Taylor, Singer Taylor Swift and Rodrigo Blankenship and 53 pairs of glasses go to the Colts

Why it makes sense. Colts need to SEE what they’re doing by trading Taylor. Sheriff Andy Taylor could have rest someone for this robbery., Taylor Swift could help the Colts replace the lost fan base and everyone loves ex Colt “respect the specs” Rodrigo Blankenship.

Why it doesn’t make sense. I Toad, have been licking some hallucinogenic toads again
