Bucs Training Camp 2023 Practice No. 13 Notes

August 13th, 2023

Bucs CB Zyon McCollum practices special teams tackling with a large beach-ball-like device Sunday at Bucs training camp.

If today is any indication, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans sure seem to be on the same page. The two hooked up for three of the highlight plays of today’s practice inside the Glazer Shed. Despite wearing pads, the Bucs played touch football today. Touch a ballcarrier and the whistle blew. That and more in today’s practice notes.

Joe noticed a couple of players’ dads stuck around for the weekend after Friday night’s game. Ko Kieft’s dad and Kade Warner’s dad (you may have heard of him — Kurt?) were in the Glazer Shed watching practice.

* You just cannot start a Bucs practice without a Rachaad White run up the middle. There has to be some ordinance where the Bucs are heavily fined for running one of the other 150 plays in their playbook than White running up the middle.

* The boredom and repetitive White run up the middle was not the case on the second play. Baker Mayfield dodges a blitz by Carlton Davis (Davis was slowed by White) and hits Mike Evans over the middle for about 15-20 yards. Evans turns on the jets and heads to the right as he outruns Jamel Dean for a monster gain.

* Kaylon Geiger on a run to the right for a few yards as he steps out of bounds.

* Mayfield fakes a handoff and throws to Russell Gage along the sideline and Dean says hello as Gages gets popped by Dean out of bounds.

* Kyle Trask rolls right and connects with Payne Durham near the right sideline.

* Sean Tucker up the middle, bounces left but still doesn’t find daylight.

* Probably a coverage sack. Trask bounces. Steps to the right. Bounces again. Steps to the right. Bounces some more and dumps the ball off to Patrick Laird over the middle.

* Laird takes a handoff up the middle and bounces right for nothing.

* White runs through a pile of red jerseys (defense) for a good gain.

* Vaughn takes a handoff, hesitates behind the line waiting for a crease to develop, then bursts through the line for a nice run to the left side.

* Cade Otton goes low over the middle to haul in a Mayfield pass.

* Trask didn’t just throw a pass away when receivers couldn’t get open, he hit the window of the Glazer Shed on the right (north) side of the field.

* Mayfield throws left for White on a short route. Shaq Barrett was in coverage.

* Vaughn fights through a crowd inside right tackle for a few yards.

* Trask rolls right and squeezes a pass between a pair of defenders for Trey Palmer along the right sideline for about a 20-yard gain.

* Ryan Miller catches a pass from Trask, who is under pressure. Miller got the ball along the left sideline.

* Mayfield to Ko Kieft to the right side.

* Russell Gage catches a Mayfield pass along the left sideline and Mayfield is clocked by Davis.

* Palmer catches a pass from Mayfield in the left flat. Palmer is getting a fair share of targets today.

* Thompkins catches a Trask pass short to the right sideline.

* Trask rolls right and throws to the left flat for Turner.

* Laird runs right.

* Mayfield throws to Evans over the middle for a decent gain. It gets better shortly.

* Mayfield is “sacked.”

* Mayfield launches a pass deep down the left side for Evans who got behind the Bucs defense for a 65-yard touchdown. Evans is Minnesota-Ready.

* Joe noticed that outside linebacker Sir’Vocea Dennis did not dress for practice. He was limping on the sidelines wearing a full-length black compression sock-looking thing covering his entire right leg.

* Mayfield rifles a pass down the right seam for Chris Godwin who gets some good YAC. Had this been a real game and the Bucs coaches not blown the whistle so soon, likely would have been a touchdown.

* Gages gets a Trask offering down the left side of the field.

7-on-7

* Kade Warner pulls in a Trask pass on the left side.

* Payne Durham catches a Mayfield pass over the middle.

* Palmer hauls in a short Trask pass on the right side.

* Chase Edmonds catches a pass from Trask over the middle and pulls away from Josh Hayes.

* Trask finds Chris Godwin open over the middle.

* Trask throws over the middle and camp meat outside linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle nearly has a one-handed pick as he skied for the ball.

* Kieft catches a pass from Trask on the left side.

* Palmer with a grab on the left side from Trask.

* Trask rolls left and a throw to Godwin on the left side is a bit too far.

* Kaylon Geiger pulls in a Trask pass as he runs a crossing pattern from the right.

* Durham was a target of Trask’s on the right side but he stood flat-footed waiting for the football and it looked like Trask expected Durham to move forward as the ball was a step ahead of him. Trask slapped his hands in frustration.

* Mayfield pumps and throws the ball away.

11-on-11

* Palmer got some good YAC after catching a Mayfield pass down the right seam.

* Mayfield throws down the right sideline maybe 20 yards and hits Evans right in the hands over the shoulder. Zyon McCollum was defending Evans, or at least trying to. Evans is having a superior camp. Not good. Superior. As in another level from everyone else.

* Geiger on a crossing pattern from the right grabs a Mayfield Trask.

* Trask throws deep to the short left corner of the end zone for Evans and the pass didn’t have enough mustard on it.

* Bouyer-Randle either likes practicing in the Glazer She or it turns him into a headhunting beast. The last time the Bucs practiced in the Glazer Shed, it was this Bouyer-Randle who drilled White in the grill with a forearm shiver that sparked a baseball brawl. Today, playing touch football, he blasted Ronnie Brown on a run along the left sideline. Easy, Butkus. Take it easy. Save it for the Jets’ scrubs.

* Mayfield connects with Gage to the right for about 10 yards.

* Kieft and Mayfield hook up on a pass down the left seam.

* Mayfield pumps twice then sails a pass about 10 rows up into the bleachers, throwing the ball away.

* Mayfield tries for Godwin down the left side and it’s a bit too long.

* Mayfield rolls left and gets the ball to Geiger down the left seam but Geiger made the mistake of walking on Antoine Winfield’s yard. Mr. Winfield pops Geiger and he is slow to get up.

* PICK! Mayfield tries to hit Palmer down the left seam and Ryan Neal intercepts the pass.

* Trask throw for David Wells on the left side but nothing doing.

* Nice play by Warner. Trask goes back to pass, Warner cuts out to bait his defender then cuts in for separation and Trask hits him perfectly in the numbers. Just like it was drawn up.

* Sean Tucker tries to run up the middle but it’s a lost cause.

* Geiger is back on the field and catches a Trask pass over the middle and ducks just in time a flying defender.

* Laird runs up the left sideline.

* It’s getting chippy. Cade Otton catches a pass along the left sideline and he is popped by Keenan Isaac. The two then begin trading shoves.

* Warner catches a pass from Trask on the left side.

* Trask is in trouble from a pass rush but somehow wiggles away and throws the ball away.

* Brown up the middle for a few yards. Boy, these Bucs love running up the middle for basically nothing. Byron Leftwich is so proud.

* Brown catches a dump-off pass on the left side from Trask.

* Brown up the middle for minimal yards.

* Trask fires to Warner along the right sideline for a score.

* Rachaad White goes down. He takes a handoff and immediately crumbles forward. He stayed on the turf for a moment and gingerly walked off the field escorted by a trainer. Joe spoke with him after practice and White told Joe he is fine.

* Mayfield and David Moore cannot make a connection.

Mayfield will be the starter and probably should be but get ready to the Mr Entertainment type drive killing turnovers.

  2. Mac Says:

Thanks Joe as always foe these write ups. It truly feels like we are at the practice watching it all go down reading your notes! Glad to see Palmer is continuing to play well. I’m beginning to be very concerned though with the running game. Seems non-existsnt. Was truly hopeful with new coordinator/scheme we would be looking better at this point but seems they are the same if not worse off from last season!

  3. ScottyMack Says:

Very interesting reading Joe’s notes versus the notes from another reporter at the practice. According to that reporter, Mayfield had an excellent day, albeit with one pick and a sack. Trask also had a pick but was said to have had a slightly below average day including multiple sacks where he held the ball for too long. Both Joe and the other site are raving about how great Evans has looked this year with this practice being the best of the best.

  4. Pewter Power Says:

Every run for the rest of training camp and preseason should be up the middle, practice makes perfect. Eventually a coordinator has to learn how to get a 3rd and one with this line. They have to see which guys up front can get some push

EVANS OUTRUNS 4.3 40 JAMEL DEAN?!???

Wow. Hat’s off Evans for vicissitudes on speed and quickness all these years and actually getting faster over the years instead of slower like most players. Kudos to you, Mike!

And wow, this isn’t a good sign for Dean’s current physical shape/ conditioning etc.

Although, ME13 is a speed demon these days, so I can kinda understand if he outruns anyone at any given moment tbh.

  6. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Hat’s off to Evans for *focusing on speed and quickness all these years.

  7. All_da_way Says:

Mayfield has trouble identifiying safeties near seems. But overall Mayfield seems like he understands the offense.

Trask has shown some good and some delay in processing but he isn’t making too many mistakes.

Palmer is really turning it up and that is good to see.

  8. Give it a Rest, Trask Bridge Says:

Imagine how much more chemistry the starter would have in September if they didn’t split snaps.

  9. WyomingJoe Says:

Somebody please ask Evans who he wants throwing TD BOMBS to him this season! I’ll take a guess and say it’s Baker. Go Bucs.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Is Mayfield throwing any long balls to Evans or Godwin? Go routes?

  11. R0n@Tampa Says:

Another solid practice from the Bucs. Not surprised at all. Can’t wait for the reg season. preseason does not matter. There is so much to be excited about in 2023! Still looking at 12 possibly a 13 win season for this team. I love that the Bucs have 3 great qbs on the roster. The qb depth on this team is second to none.

  12. ATLBuc Says:

Mayfield seems to make some nice plays in practice but in the first game didn’t push the ball upfield when there were receivers open

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Joe, if you ever get a chance to talk to Kurt Warner, please ask him if he’s given his son any advice for when he goes to work at Publix as a bag boy.

  14. R0n@Tampa Says:

Bring on Kansas City. We are going to give a Chiefs and the overrated Mahomes ( rewatch 2020 superbowl) a lot of pain in February. Again!

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Evans is having a superior camp. Not good. Superior. As in another level from everyone else.

    ———–

Evans, and even Godwin to a lesser extent, are super cheap in fantasy. I’m getting Evans everywhere. If he can get 1050 yards and 12 TDs with Mike Glennon and McCown at QB … with 17 games, even Mayfield should be able to do something close to that.

  16. Tye Says:

RANDOM: It is just preseason and the 1st game BUT that said:

    The Bucs were embarrassing…..
    The Panthers were worse….
    The Falcons looked promising…
    The Saints looked solid…

  17. Rod Munch Says:

On a different note, the Falcons cut Mykal Walker, one of their starting LBs from last year, and a 4th round pick in 2020 I believe. I looked at his numbers real quick, and he’s a guy who is 230 and runs a 4.65, which is good for an ILB.

I don’t know much about the guy, but I do know that Britt doesn’t run a 4.65 and is a huge liability because of it – he’s just too slow for the NFL. If I’m the Bucs, I’m bringing him into camp. PLUS Todd can get all of the secrets the Falcons have to offer out of him.

  18. Bojim Says:

Again. No run game. I’m concerned.

They have too much class to even consider answering a question like that but since you brought it up I’ll give you a little insight.

Trask fed Pitts and Toney at Florida. Pitts signed for 4 years and 34 million. Toney signed for 4 years and 13 million.

Bakers senior year only Receiver drafted was Mark Andrew and he signed for 4 years and 3.5 million.

Seems Trask helped his guys look good and Baker made Baker look good.

Ask Pitts and Toney how they felt about Trask’s throws.

Minnesota is going to be in cover 2 all day long because Tampa can’t run the dang ball. Going to be a slow start at that streak of 1000’s if B3 is behind center.

  20. R0n@Tampa Says:

Bucs have an explosive offense. very explosive. Evans and Godwin could both get 2000yds rec this year.

  21. TonySoprano Says:

Bowles unhappy with the tackling in first preseason game. Therefore, decides to play two hand touch next practice.

That is a tall order. Calvin Johnson had just under 2000 in 2012 and the next guy had 500 and something.

Odds of a Bucs receiver being the first player in history to get 2000 and another player on the team getting 2k in the same year? Sure makes the odds of the Bucs winning the Super Bowl this year pretty good.

  23. Joe Says:

Is Mayfield throwing any long balls to Evans or Godwin?

Feel free to re-read the notes. 🙂

  24. WyomingJoe Says:

@ D Cone … Just talked with Pitts and Toney. They said they’d rather have Baker throw to them. But thanks for asking, lol…

  25. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

D cone, first your argument is completely asinine. Second, Mark Andrews is currently rated the second best TE in the league and one of the highest paid as well. But you keep on making up your nonsense excuses, if it makes you feel better.

    Mark Andrews currently

    Contract: 4 yrs/ $56,000,000
    Signing bonus: $10,163,055
    Average Salary: $14,000,000
    Total Guarantee: $37,583,055

    Kyle Pitts currently

    Contract: 4 yrs/ $32,910,495
    Signing bonus: $21,294,904
    Average Salary: $8,227,664
    Total Guarantee: $32,910,496

    Kadarius Toney currently

    Contract: 4 yrs/ $13,719,508
    Signing bonus: $7,337,824
    Average Salary: $3,429,877
    Total Guarantee: $13,719,508

Also in 2018 the NFL drafted (2) players from Florida and (4) from Oklahoma.
But you’re right Trask is great because he made Pitts and Toney great.

Baker threw to a few guys at OU, that are doing pretty well in the NFL. Maybe you’ve heard of them:

    -Mark Andrews
    -Cee Dee Lamb
    -Marquise Brown
    -Joe Mixon
    -Sterling Shepard

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

These notes don’t mean nothing anymore Baker Mayfield has been gifted the starting job. So I don’t have choice but to root for him but I got strange feeling that the bucs or losing on purpose like the losers they have been since 1976 . And that’s pathetic for a franchise and fan base to be ok with losing!!

  27. Proudbucsfan Says:

I’m worried about our Oline and our running backs, they suck, we don’t have a starting running back on our team. White is a good pass catching back but running backs have got to be able to run. The best runner is KV

  28. Sly Pirate Says:

    WHAT THE HELL?!!!!

We need a run game. We hire a running OC from Seattle (awesome run game). We reload the OL. We can’t come up with any creativity beyond up the middle?

I’ll give you the preseason game but not practice. Seattle had +100 yards rushing in their preseason game with +4 yards/carry.

Canales is starting to look suspect.

  29. D Cone Says:

Don’t tell me it’s raining Says

My bad. I guess I must have thought that the others you mentioned were showcased by Kyler Murray due to the fact he got locked in for 5 years and 240 million and Baker is making a little less one a one year deal.

I’ll try to give B3 all the credit going forward.

  30. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

That damn beach ball has to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen on a football field. And it’s not working.

  31. garro Says:

That beach ball is sure to improve our tackling to All Pro levels.
MVP candidate for the Bucs D is…the beach ball! Go Beach!

    Go Bucs!

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This is probably a pipe dream, but continuing the run up the gut on the first play might be a smoke screen for the Vikings?

Also…I noticed no picks mentions for Trask? Did he actually not have any, or was it just not mentioned?

    I noticed Mayfield had one.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So, I pretty much got what I wanted…Mayfield starting until the bye week.

I do not expect us to win much before then…and if they are smart, they will bench Mayfield and put in Trask…then stick with him the rest of the year.

Trask will probably play like a rookie…especially at first. But if he has the ability, he will gradually improve and start winning games. Remember, real games are faster paced. It will take him a little time to get used to it.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Oneilbuc, I 100% agree.

I’m not convinced they will lose on purpose…I think Bowles was always going to make Mayfield the starter, no matter what he or anyone else claims.

And I think he is doing it because of the veteran status.

That said…I’m wondering if the starters not playing this week will be on offense instead of defense, basically @#$ing Trask over.

  35. WyomingJoe Says:

Baker is just better than Trask. That was proved again at yesterday’s practice… and it was t even close.

  36. Dave Pear Says:

Zyon practicing with a ball, LOL. Because he can’t tackle a real player.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

Wyoming. Baker Mayfield is not a good quarterback regardless how you feel about Trask. Friday night Trask threw down the field way more than Baker Mayfield. He looked better when he had time but they called different plays for Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield passes where dink and dunk and that’s not going to work. It’s a reason why Baker Mayfield is on his 4th team!!!

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

These notes don’t mean nothing anymore the bucs are tanking !!!

  39. Fred McNeil Says:

Oneilbuc, the Bucs are not tanking. If these notes aren’t worth reading because the Bucs are gonna tank why are you bothering to read them?
