Bucs Running Backs Combined For 41 Yards On 22 Carries

August 11th, 2023

Bucs running backs Chase Edmonds (left) and rookie Sean Tucker.

Rough night for Buccaneers running backs.

The good news is two-fold, however.

First, No. 1 running back Rachaad White got the night off. He’s healthy and was just being rested. Second, newcomer RB Chase Edmonds flashed a little, but he stood out more because of the struggles of his temmates.

Here’s how Bucs running backs rushed against the Steelers tonight.

Chase Edmonds  6 carries for 18 yards
Ke’Shawn Vaughn — 7 carries for 4 yards
Sean Tucker — 6 carries for 10 yards
Patrick Laird — 2 carries for 8 yards
Ronnie Brown — 1 carry for 1 yard

Edmonds had a nice 8 yard run. Tucker, among other Bucs RBs, had a quality touchdown run with a broken tackle wiped out by a penalty.

Yes, plenty of shade can be thrown at the Tampa Bay offensive line. The holes didn’t seem to be there all night.

A little concerning for a Bucs team that wants to be known as a dangerous rushing offense. But it’s early and Joe is not panicking.

All the good runs got called back on penalties!

  2. Voice of Truth Says:

I was especially impressed with 3 runs up the gut and a punt to open The game

It was like they poured out a little of their 40oz for Byron

Much respect – but still no run game

  3. Austin Says:

    I like tucker alot

  4. rrsrq Says:

Definitely have to clean up Buc ball, eeerrr, the penalties. But I definitely had concerns about the right side of the line, at some point you have to go SEC and Big 10 lineman

  5. Rod Munch Says:

The offense was as creative in the run game as Leftwich.

Hopefully this is just the ‘preseason’ offense, and not the real thing, but the run up the gut on 1st down is played out.

  6. Oxycondomns Says:

Bowles will get the blame but Licht not impressing me

  7. Tbbucs3 Says:

Hopefully tonight isnt any indication of how Canales will run the offense….too much under center no run game creativity and guys lining up incorrectly. Ill give him a pass for pre season week 1.

  8. RagingBrisket Says:

“Licht’s oline” is a horror show. Wirfs is the only legitimate player and he is unable to play all 5 positions at once. Lots of talk all the time about “Licht’s guys” because he drew a winning hand with Marpet and to a lesser degree Kappa but seriously these younger players are getting mauled by future Uber Eats drivers.
    Tonight was obscene

  9. BFFL Says:

Blaming BL over goodwin and Bowles never made sense to me

  10. All_da_way Says:

    Bucs OL stunk it up.

    Penalties, whiffs, man handled.

  11. TonySoprano Says:

Great job Bowles on having your team coming out prepared and disciplined, per usual. Great job Licht on continuing to be the smartest guy in the room and drafting weak, chicken-legged small school linemen that get rag dolled play after play.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

We have the worst line in the NFL, I mean come on what do u expect??
Lets just not blame the coach or backs as they didnt draft the linemen

  13. Jack Clark Says:

    Did we win yet?

  14. JayBuc Says:

When are we gonna hold licht accountable? He’s hired Lovie, Dirk, Arians (our one and only decent HC in the Licht era) and Bowles. Not to mention his fairly mediocre drafting (or lack thereof) which in some instances is actually hurting this team IE (OL, CB, dare I say LB?)

  15. Dave Pear Says:

No need to panic, also no need to think that Goedeke is anything more than a very large Amazon truck driver. The ignoring of a RB upgrade and also not investing better in the OL through the draft is concerning.

Maybe Goedeke will be delivering pizzas in the near future.

  16. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, and the few that he actually ‘hit-on’ were all pretty darn obvious and nearly impossible to completely miss-on… When, you’re picking in the top 5-10. White, Vea, Evans, then the year they drafted like FIVE DB’s (surely you’re gonna ‘hit-on’ at least one or two, Davis), Winfield Jr. was an obvious one, & Wirfs at like, 13th. Godwin was a real good one in the 3rd, but literally, EVERYONE was ‘high’ on home & went NUTS at the Bucs Draft-Party at Sports Legends” in Clearwater, the year they drafted him!!!! Other than that… It’s not been so good. Kwon Alexander was a nice one too, but again, he was another one of those freak ‘LSU-guys’ who EVERYONE ELSE also LOVED and that nobody else ever ‘missed-on’ either, at that time… LSU was really pumpin’ em OUT, then. Dean developed nicely, but seriously tho, that’s pretty much about it. The others have been HORRID… Not even ‘traceable’ for any future draft capital, and that’s ‘another-thing’ that has absolutely, just KILLED-US!!!!

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

WoW! So much negativity! Is this a Buccaneer fan site or did I make a wrong click??

  18. RagingBrisket Says:

Cricket please don’t attempt to tell fans how to feel. Some aren’t here for the rah rah cheerleading oral when the boys aren’t up.
Don’t think the comments are here to soothe either.
    Your judgment is juvenile

    JayBuc Says:
When are we gonna hold licht accountable?

    Let’s do that …
    2x Defending NFCS Champs
    1x Super Bowl
Most R1 Pro Bowlers than NFCS Combined
Only GM ever to return all 22 starters after SB
FA – TB12, Suh, JPP, Shaq, Jensen
Draft – Evans, Godwin, Wirfs, Winfield, CDIII, Dean, Marpet

Who has done better in the NFCS?
You don’t like his small school OL? Marpet – pro bowl. Cappa – solid.

Not sure what you’re mad about? We’ve been on an amazing run.

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

Cant block, so we cant run.
    Same as last year.

  21. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

White should have played. He needs the work.

  22. Crunchbuc 76 Says:

Had all off-season to fix the OL. FA fix? We got Feiler. 🤡. Draft fix? We got Much and put him at a position he’s never played before. Same with Wirfs. Yep. Light is an idiot.

  23. Jp3 Says:

    You all cry too much

  24. Bucs Fan from Philly Says:

There are still quality veteran backs waiting to be signed. No reason to force carry’s to Vaughn if there is a proven veteran at home. We are going to depend on the run with our weak O line and QB play yet our backs are young and unproven. That’s the easiest position to pay on the cheap for.

  25. Marine Buc Says:

My prediction – Sean Tucker will be the Bucs RB2 by week #1 of the regular season…

  26. Will the Tampa Thrill Says:

Might need to move Cody to right tackle and see how he does in preseason.

All the running backs look pretty good if we can keep it penalty free. I do hope Sean Tucker gets more touches next time just think of his college tape he’s going to do good. How many RBs can a team normally keep?

  27. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

and is Canales going to be able to call plays effectively… he’s never done it, so the jury has to be out still

  28. Idroolpewter&red Says:

The stats for running backs would have looked better without all the penalties.

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

Okay let’s blame the coach because the gm drafted awful players

  30. confido75 Says:

We are in cap purgatory this season, we have a new offense, new QBs, lots of new young talent, etc. While I hope this squad can do some damage this year, but I am not optimistic of their chances of making the playoffs. I’m more interested in the the long term strategy going forward to build another super bowl caliber team. I love the Bucs, too, but lets be real here. This is going to be a down year and we are paying the credit card bills now for the Brady era.

  31. garro Says:

Tucker and Edmonds did well. The penalty stuff is the real story. False starts at home should never happen. Not lining up right are more a sign of bad coaching. We have refs in practice Joe? That holding call was total BS. On a good note I saw Otten blast somebody on a run play.

    Go Bucs!
