Todd Bowles On Calijah Kancey’s Bad Calf

[UPDATED: 12:49 P.M.] First round draft pick Calijah Kancey, who had the attention of several Bucs veterans for his speed and smarts, now has his rookie season at defensive tackle stunted.

Kancey suffered a calf injury early in practice today at a packed One Buc Palace and did not return.

“He’s got a calf strain. We’ll get an MRI and we’ll see where it’s at,” head coach Todd Bowles said after Day 4 of training camp.

Bowles added that Kancey was a quick study since the Bucs made him the No. 19 overall pick and he was coming along very well.

“He was adapting to the scheme mentally, and then he was adding his physical part to it,” Bowles explained. “So he was putting it together quicker than normal rookies do. So hopefully it’s not that bad and he can get back.”

NFL Network reporter Sara Walsh X’ed that Kancey grabbed his calf while he was on the ground. He was carted off the field but did walk to the cart, Walsh noted.

The injury occurred during individual position drills.

Joe spoke with someone with the Bucs about Kancey’s injury and was told, “We’ll see.” The source didn’t appear distressed at all. So it seems on face value the injury is not that serious.

[UPDATED: 12:49 P.M.] Here is video of the injury.
